The Star Inn in Basingstoke and Deane

We travel this road nearly every month to see our son in the Surrey Hills. My wife and I always wanted to stop at the Star Inn but never had the chance. Since her passing away my family and I deliberately made time to stop as a homage to her. Wonderful meal, wonderful venue. My wife would have loved it. Definitely to be repeated. Leanne our server was the epitome of customer service, nothing was too much trouble for her. Outstanding all around!!

Very cozy pub with very nice coffee and halloumi chips. Friendly staff too! Do remember to make a reservation for busy dates though.

Popped in during the week as we always pass by but have never been in. Food was great and service by Leanne was top notch. Will be back

Had a tasty fish and chip meal. Portion size was good. Had the Sticky Toffee pudding with custard - lovely. Leanne served us, she was friendly and we had a laugh with her. Very good experience. Great time was had by all.

We reserved a table for 5 at 1pm on 3rd February 2025 to celebrate a birthday. Our waitress was Leanne and she was friendly, didn't rush us when we were eating and was helpful. The food was excellent - very tasty, hot and decent size portions. I had the Beef and Red Wine Lasagne and it was one of the best Lasagne's I have had. The triple cooked chips were really good - crispy on the outside and fluffy potato on the inside. I had the Allotment Fruit Crumble with custard for pudding - again decent size portion and very tasty. We will be coming back again soon and I would recommend The Star Inn to everyone.

Celebrated my birthday meal here and really enjoyed it. Leanne was our waitress and she was efficient, friendly and helpful. I had the Sea Bass main course which was excellent and the Sticky Toffee Pudding with custard was yummy. The portions were a good size and the food was very tasty. Will be back in the near future.

A super celebration for Mum's 90th birthday with our family of 18. Pre ordered food was well organised, from talking with Robin, and co ordinated on the day by Emily. Super food, great atmosphere.

Lovely place to stop for some food. Our server Leanne was lovely and she made us right at home. Poor service can make it break and experience but we were all laughing and joking together in no time! Lovely mocktails! Me and my partner are vegan and enjoyed our options and our meat eating friends loved their food too! Great place for all, will go again for sure!

We have been here before and had the Signature Burger which has a prime steak burger in it. You can tell the difference as they ask you how you want it, medium etc. This time the burger arrived at the table it was very disappointing, they didn't serve a prime steak burger in it, it was just a large crappy old burger van burger. I will be writing to vintage inns. How dare these people insult it's customers thinking they wouldn't tell the difference.

Great experience here and would definitely go again. We went here for a birthday and the staff were amazing, really helpful and is one of the reasons my dad keeps coming back! Despite having a reduced menu on the day we went there was enough choice and the quality was really good. The roast dinners were the best I've had in a pub - really well cooked and worth the money. The kids ordered sandwiches which were also good quality. And the deserts were different from the pub norm, were tasty and well presented. There's a lovely atmosphere in this pub, perfect for a winter day.

Nicely decorated place with lots of space so no cramped up tables like you see in other pubs, with little alcoves for privacy. Service was perfectly timed. They didn't have my first two choices from the menu, was slightly disappointed, but what I did end up ordering was delicious.

Disappointing Boxing Day Meal I booked a table here for a Boxing Day meal, but unfortunately, it didn’t live up to expectations. Having driven past a few times, the restaurant looked like a lovely spot for a special occasion. However, upon arrival, we found the place completely empty except for a waiter and a barman, not the lively atmosphere we had hoped for. We were informed it was a set menu, which hadn’t been mentioned at the time of booking. When the food arrived, it was disappointing. completely lacking in flavor, poorly presented, and simply piled onto the plate. The overall experience was very underwhelming, and I won’t be returning. It’s a real shame because the venue itself is beautiful and has so much potential.

This could be a great pub. Needs a lick of paint and a good clean. I would also suggest some air fresheners. Really good layout to the place with lots of space. The staff were friendly but slow. The manager was busying himself but not really sure what he was doing. There wasn’t a country pub warmth to the place. I’m not referring to the fireplace being lit. Needs some love and attention.

Lovely meal there just before Xmas. Sat by the fire and they put a new log on fo rus, which I love! Food was good (fish & chips, hunters chicken). Staff polite. All good really!

Lovely food and pub we sat in the bar area with our dog so felt a little neglected at times but the good was really good so we didn't really need anything. The have a little table as you come in with all the things you need for your 4 legged friend, blankets, treats, water bowls 😁 🐕

We turned up without booking, although they were busy with Xmas bookings they were very accommodating, the service was very friendly served by leanne, all three of us chose different dishes from the menu and were very satisfied with The food ,

Sunday lunch excellent with good choice on the Menu, but stayed with traditional roast beef. Nicely cooked and presented with good vegetables. Service good from Ravi and team, pretty prompt considering how busy it was. Will aim to go back soon.

3 former Queensmen arrived at midday for lunch, on entry we were amazed, on a cold day to find a warm Inn, something of a rarity these days... A very warm welcome from Ravi (Management team) and our lovely waitress (Sadly I did'nt catch this young lady's name) The menu appeared to contain a substantial choice of the normal and 2x Fish & chips & aa Chicken curry were ordered; and what a mistake that was.....my curry was o.k but the F & C's looked fantastic..! My friends both stated this was one of the very best F & C pub lunches they'd eaten...in a warm bright & friendly environment attended by a very professional waitress.. Puddings are not usually chosen but I read the wording and thought I couldn't resist the Blackberry ice cream sorbet. Cheesecake was also ordered, and the size and look was amazing...never seen anything like it ! Both were absolutely delicious.. this is a large clean Inn, plenty of room for the other diners present, probably an excellent location for a 'Shoot' lunch. I think I'm going to come back over 2 county borders with my wife for another lunch before the Xmas rush.. WELL DONE Ravi & your team... AND well done to who ever maintains the log fires, no smoke or smell, just waves of heat on a cold winter day. T.M. Wiltshire

Overpriced Ship! The Main meals were basic and very expensive. The puddings were a disaster, the menu didn't even reflect what was served, some sort of chocolate ball rolled and sitting on a bed of dead flowers, dried breadcrumbs swept off the floor, with red things! Some of the staff really need to brush up on their service skills, they were emotionally blunted and showed no interest in wanting to be there. Tables sat dirty for hours as the staff walked past them empty handed. The toilets are a disgrace, urine stains and mould everywhere, I don't think they had been cleaned for months, if not years. Overall this place was a big let down, compared to ten years ago when it was pretty good. I don't think it's "vintage" anymore, more like "past it" Will have to avoid from now on.

Returned for an evening meal yesterday after a long period away thinking that standards and service would of been the same how wrong I was. Booked a table and non of the requirements were catered for even though it was fairly quiet, service was poor with staff not keen to engage or interact and left us sitting there for a long period after finishing meal and then just cleared plates with no offer of anything else it took another member of staff to be able to order another drink and see the deserts. Food, well, this was below expectation menu not clear with what items were, chicken schizel was average and said triple cooked chips but didn't express these would be with the skins on , chicken burger bun was over toasted and fish cakes were basic and overly presented and hadn't realised that the potato's were over cooked, pudding didn't improve with a choux bun as described turning up as not a bun but a ring and a dome turning up as a ball on a bed of crumble which looked like sand. Cleanliness this is an area which is of concerns, carpet but our table had a big stain which looked like things had been trampled in for years and toilets were very dirty with urine stains all around the urinal rotting skirting boards and rusty mirrors also one of the cubical was out of order and had broken elements in it. Overall a very disappointing visit and not what I was expecting based on previous I doubt I will return for another visit.

A spontaneous decision to eat out this evening. Our online booking was easy. On arrival there was a warm welcome. We chose a quiet table. The choices from the menu are broad and will suit many tastes & appetites. The wine list is varied too. Compared to other pubs/inns in the immediate area, the Star Inn is at the top of the league - a year ago it wasn't. We'll be back in December to sample the festive menu. Thank you to the Star Team!

Thought we might find a local hidden gem but that was not to be the case! Food was below average and expensive. We had this meal Saturday and I have since spoken with Ravi who assures me our experience was a one off and the other google reviews speak for themselves!

Popped in for a meal as we were passing. Served by the excellent Chris who made us very welcome and even got my wife a glass of honey and lemon for her cold which was a really nice touch. Food was nice and value for money, will definitely visit again.

We went for a meal at The Star for my son’s birthday yesterday. Ravi, Chris and their team were absolutely amazing! The food was spectacular, they did everything they could to ensure everything was perfect for us, especially for my son as he is Coeliac Disease. Ravi went through everything with him for the options he could eat, his service was 2nd to none. I was able to put some decorations up near our table, I was able to take a homemade gluten free cake with us and they accommodated us with my mum needed to be near the fire to keep warm and have her wheelchair and we were accommodated for my grandson’s pram. The whole visit was incredible. I would DEFINITELY RECOMMEND The Star, the food, the service! Thank you Ravi, Chris and the team for making my son’s birthday a memorable and very special day!

Been here before and enjoyed the pub/restaurant setting as well as the good quality food, unfortunately we do not live that close to the pub, so on the way back from Basingstoke shopping centre decided to come back. Was not disappointed again the pub/restaurant was so welcoming with a log fire lit and fairy lights on. Staff were very friendly and the food was so good quality, big portion and hot. Unfortunately these days it’s hard to find a pub/restaurant that serves good , hot food, but here they won’t disappoint. Well done, Thankyou

Review for The Star Inn, Newbury We had a lovely time at The Star Inn! There were plenty of delicious options on the menu, and everything we chose was fantastic. The staff were friendly and very helpful, adding to the overall enjoyable experience. The only minor criticism was the booking process. I had made two requests online, including asking if it was possible to arrange a birthday cake. Unfortunately, no one got back to me about it, and I’m not sure the other request was noted either. Aside from that, everything was great. The location offers plenty of parking space, which was convenient. Overall, a wonderful experience, and I’d definitely recommend it!

We had the most beautiful mouth watering, melt in your mouth, ribeye steak, cooked by the most loveliest and attentive chef, Chris. Served with upmost care and attention. We really had such a wonderful evening in this cozy and welcoming atmosphere! The chef made sure everything was cooked to a t, and the beef dripping sauce was just absolutely out of this world too! Will absolutely be heading back soon for another! I definitely recommend, 10 out of 10! Thankyou again so much!

This is a lovely spacious pub to meet up with friends and family. The lunchtime food we all enjoyed and very much appreciated excellent service from a pleasant guy called Chris.

Just can’t figure out all the whining everyone is saying about this place. I ate here the other day and had the fish and chips. It was excellent so was the service.

We visited to celebrate and were not disappointed. The food was delicious, my husband had the ribeye steak and I had the lambshank, the steak was cooked exactly how my husband likes it. The food was served quickly and the staff were attentive. The pub has a lovely feel to it and had a very cosy feel.

It was so enjoyable! We were celebrating an important birthday and the manager and staff were wonderful in accommodating our party. Lovely food and atmosphere. Nothing to improve.

Went here for a large family lunch for my sisters birthday. Pre-ordered as we were a large group and all the food was fantastic, roast was really nicely cooked and kids meals were great. Jayden was exceptional, she was so kind and helpful at making sure everyone had correct meals and anything they needed. And when it came to sorting the cake she went the extra mile to make it everything so special. Really lovely and couldn’t recommend going here enough!

I don't normally leave a review, but on this occasion I could not have a meal and leave a review Myself & my Dad visited the Star Inn last night for a meal and we certainly weren't disappointed. I had the Hunter's Chicken Schnitzel & my Dad had the Beef & Red Wine "Pie of the Day" which we both thoroughly enjoyed & we can both highly recommend. We can also recommend having the hot drink & mini pudding, if ever you don't feel like you can have a whole pudding these are a lovely way to finish any meal The interior of the pub is beautiful, cosy, welcoming & has a lovely dinning area. There was a lovely atmosphere last night for a relaxing meal and we had a very enjoyable evening Leanne was our server for the evening. She was very helpful & welcoming which made it a very enjoyable meal to both of us. She is very much a credit to the business as there was a power cut after receiving our mains, but there was no panic from Leanne as she made sure to light the tea lights on every table, so no-one was left in the dark. I am glad to report that after a little while the power did come back on and overall we had a lovely meal I would highly recommend visiting the Star Inn as you won't be disappointed & you will have a very enjoyable meal. We will be definitely be coming back!

We recently visited The Star Inn with my family, and from start to finish, it was a great experience. Booking was a breeze using the app, and I received a confirmation email right away. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted and promptly shown to our table. The staff were incredibly friendly and went out of their way to make us feel comfortable. The interior of The Star Inn is beautiful, with a cozy and well-maintained dining area that instantly made us feel welcome. The atmosphere was perfect for a relaxing family meal, and we thoroughly enjoyed every moment of our visit. Highly recommended!

The service was very bad from start to finish, the food was awful, and the bill was even worse.

The food was nice - the atmosphere good and our young server who could speak Polish was excellent. I cannot fault the service and efficiency of our Server. A nice experience.

English Pub grub on a cold Autumn day

Lovely looking restaurant, nice decor and lights inside. Service was nearly non existent despite only having 4 tables and 3 servers. Roast dinner wasn't very nice, especially the potatoes.

First time at Star Inn and definitely the last! Dinner was fine. Pudding was a joke. The portion size of the ice cream was the tiniest you can imagine. Service was very slow, although staff was polite. Once we finished dinner, we had to wait ages for someone to take plates away. Had to look for someone to order more drinks, puddings etc, and it wasn't busy at the time. It looked like our table was forgotten about the whole time. Also, music was very loud at times to the point we were unable to have a conversation. Unfortunately, not the experience we expected.

Made use of Vintage Inns 33% off voucher. So Very good value Friendly manager - Ravi. Will be back

Incredibly delicious food and ale! I liked the decor and the ambience of the place. The cask ale was some of the best I had! Definitely coming back here again ✌️
