The Star Inn in Basingstoke and Deane

We had a wonderful lunch at Star Inn on the bank holiday Monday after Easter. Not only was the food lovely, but the staff were very friendly and helpful. Both our dishes were excellent and the garlic bread starter was super yummy as well. Thank you again Leanne and Ravi for a fabulous lunch and being so sweet to us. We were celebrating a lunch the two of us after having gotten married 🥰 The Star Inn is definitely somewhere that we will be going back to.

Possibly the worst steak I have ever paid for! £25 for an over-cooked ribeye. My Wife downloaded a £20 voucher that would have been the only saving grace but the pub refused to accept it. Not a good experience. ☹️

Helpful friendly and happy staff

Fantastic place to stop for lunch. Nice old pub with great staff and service, and a good range of food. Portions were a decent size and the food tasty, we thought it was good value for what you got. Couldn't ask for better.

Food and service were excellent

It was a last minute decision and had to take my wife out for our anniversary. We have tried other country Pups before, but nothing like The Star Inn. Was worth the drive from Oxford City. The food and the service was amazing. The restaurant manager Ravi was very kind, and accommodated our last minute request and Emily was very helpful. We will be back with the whole family next time.

What an awful experience. The main meals were cold and inedible. The pork belly was soggy with not a hint of crispness and the veg was watery and very cold. Such a shame and a disappointment as this was an anniversary meal. I can’t believe any chef would be prepared to send out these meals to paying customers. He should be ashamed just wanted to pay the bill and get out of there so we could try and salvage the evening by going elsewhere. Disgraceful.

Leanne served us and was really helpful and friendly. She offered us the table in the little snug in the lounge area which was perfect. Food was good, and hot too.

A lovely relaxed evening started with a warm welcome from Leanne. We were shown to our favourite table by the fire.

We haven't been here for many years and thought we would give this a try as it was pretty central to where the 4 of us live for an informal business meeting. We had a really great lunch here, the service was really good with delicious and reasonably priced food! we would definitely recommend this pub.

Following our excellent Christmas lunch at the Star back in December, we visited for a birthday with family and a dog & a baby. Leanne could not have been more helpful, from greeting and seating us to our final departure. Service excellent, food great, hot and in good time. The pub is a lovely example of what we assume is an old coaching inn, with exposed beams & character. Now members of the Vintage Inns ‘club’, we’ll be back regularly.

Went for spur of the moment lunch with a friend. Thoroughly enjoyed the food, service. Leanne was so helpful and attentive, so obviously decided that we will come again soon.

We stopped for lunch on a freezing day but were warmly welcomed and shown to a quiet table as requested. I had the most delicious lunch, a roasted vegetable wrap. The wrap was beetroot and chia seeds, light and tasty. Service was efficient and friendly. I look forward to visiting again!

Arrived early for your table, but the staff managed to get us seated early. Food arrived fairly promptly as we were a large group. Good size portions.

The Star Inn accommodated 21 of us after a long days walk - we arrived earlier than anticipated but were served courteously and promptly for our drinks before the meal. We were even allowed to move our 6pm reservation earlier to save waiting - the manager and staff were extremely helpful. The food was excellent, well cooked, tender and colourful fresh vegetables. All my friends said the same thing. We are so grateful to the staff of The Star Inn for enhancing a very enjoyable night to being truly superb on every front. Thank you.

Usually The Star is really good for food but last night we went to celebrate a birthday. The veg was undercooked floppy carrots, overcooked Hunters Chicken, cold Creme Brulee and cold custard. Returned my partners meal but again the veg was undercooked. Have sent a complaint only to be told why didn't I complain about the rest. They couldn't get 1 meal right let alone more! I won't be returning anytime soon. Not much customer service skills.

Our server Becca was lovely and it's a nice pub. Partners pie was good but the veg to both of us had spoiled. A little slimy and had a sharp taste to it. Becca happily got a replacement and these were perfect and visually fresh. I had the fishcakes and was a little disappointed. Two fishcakes, four baby potatoes, 3 broccoli stems and a small sauce. We had a chuckle when I said that looks a little sad. Fishcakes very dry and just crumbled. Becca did say I could get a replacement but the meal had already been partially had. We were offered coffee and dessert on the house and just had the hot drinks. Been here before and by and large they a nice pub so perhaps a bad day. Will visit again as Becca was great and willing to help which is all you can ask for.

We had a lovely meal here with family, and despite it being in the Christmas/NYE lull, with lots of large groups, the staff were very friendly and attentive. The inside of the pub is lovely with a rustic charm too.

UPDATED FOR 2023! 6 YEARS LATER! : Still don't go here. My daughter was served inedible 'chicken goujons'. I thought she was being fussy until I bit into one, unable to eat it, they were all the same. The tables were dirty, how after 6 years are they still getting it wrong? Original review Don't go here. That is, unless you like waiting ages for average food, not eating all at the same time and being ignored by the staff. This is my nearest pub but I won't set foot in it out of principle. How can you get it THAT wrong?

What a horrendous experience. I really don’t know where to start, we work hard all year and finished work on Friday 22nd so booked to go to the star on Saturday to start our family Christmas celebrations. Were had a dreadful year and were looking forward to a nice meal out. Firstly when we arrived the waitress came within minutes to take our order. I asked if we could order drinks and just give us a few minutes to look at the food menu. My son ordered a regular Coke, I ordered the Christmas cosmo cocktail and my husband the zero alcohol peroni. My god this was hard work , firstly I was told they might not be able to do the cocktail, my son was brought a pint of Coke and my husband a pint of peroni? He queried if it was correct as shed checked at least 3 times before what he wanted and was assured it was. However a few minutes later the waitress rushed over to advise it was in fact alcohol!! She then didn’t come back to take our food order for over 30 mins (I’d point out at this point the restaurant was more than half empty) When taking the food order we ordered the cheesy garlic bread , chorizo bites and olives to share as a starter. We were advised they didn’t have any cheese , so the bread would just be garlic bread. We agreed that would be fine. My husband ordered the duo of lamb, sorry no lamb was the response ! Eventually after another long wait our starters came out and omg ! The garlic bread was burnt to a crisp ! Black ! My husband took this back to the waitress and told her to take it back and take off our bill. How on earth any self respecting chef let that leave the kitchen , or a waitress bring that to a customer’s table is insulting. When the mains came we were at the point of giving up. Both my husbands main and my main were cold !! Stone cold. We decided to just eat what we could and get out of there. So we asked for the bill. We waited and waited and waited. All the time all three members of staff were huddled around the til. Obviously having an issue. But instead of coming over and apologising for the wait we were left sitting there. Eventually after calling IT they resolved the issue. On the way out my husband did express how bad the experience was. The manager offered to deduct something off the bill. But that would make no difference to our ruined lunch out. The food is below par, the prices were an absolute rip off!! Nearly £30 for a burger with a pig in blanket screwed to the top. I will not be returning here. It was a shame because 13 months ago we’d had a lovely meal , but this experience was horrendous. Never again

Christmas dinner and dessert wasn’t nice at all starters was nice.. when told the manger he didn’t like the complaint and was rude and didn’t seem to care about our opinions! The roast potatoes wasn’t roast potatoes.. 2 other family’s that was there also complained...

The larger root vegetables were under cooked. My son thought the soup was not improved by the cabbage. Other than that everything was very nice. We thought the meal was lovely.

Booked here for Xmas day lunch as we live in Kingsclere, as nice and local. We had previously eaten here and the food and staff were generally very good, however on this occasion, although the staff were courteous and friendly, the food was very disappointing...

We ordered a steak.. it was cooked to perfection, add loads of side orders and We had a nice bottle of red to go with our meal .. I can't remember the server name but they where very helpful and made us feel really welcome

Used to be really good but our most recent visit left us disappointed. The food was average and overdone. For the price we paid, it wasn't good value for money and so we won't be rushing back unfortunately.

This is a great Pub very old traditional country pub the food is excellent with a great selection of beers the staff are extremely friendly and helpful the service is very quick had dinner on a Saturday afternoon with family absolutely loved it I will definitely be visiting there again cheers Vince

After visiting an attraction in Newbury we decided to stop here for some lunch, as we did some 5 years ago we walked in and went straight to the bar, I asked if they where serving food, the lady replied have you got a booking no walk ins, and that was my experience we had. The food and service was very good, attentive without being overbearing. Meals were tasty although not all options on the menu were available and a couple of other choices had to be made. One meal (Penang curry) was a little in the cool side as if it had been sitting before delivery to the table.

We enjoyed our meal which was served by Leanne who was lovely. The food arrived in good time and was nicely cooked and presented. Will come back again.

Lovely place to go for any occasion! We sat bar side and it was very quiet and lovely. Food was amazing! Service was quick and with a smile! Have been here multiple times and definitely can reccomend the roast dinners. The crumble and also sticky toffee pudding are very yummy too! Very happy with our visit and will be going again!
