The Rising Sun in Dover

Superb Sunday lunch and steak. Ample vegetables and crispy roast potatoes. Ribeye steak superbly cooked and accompaniment's were plentiful. Drinks were good and service top rate.

Restaurants usually focus on the meat, with vegetables as a soggy afterthought. Not at the Rising Sun! The vegetables are cooked to perfection and served beautifully. They focus on what they are trying to achieve rather than having a menu that goes on for pages. Sunday Lunch is Sunday Lunch. We are here so often over the summer and could not fault it. Then we got busy, but now is the time to return. And there are lovely walks around the area and very unusal buildings.

Called in today, the first time for us, but friends had been before , lovely place in a great setting, the lady who greeted us was friendly and welcoming, sat in comfy chairs until our order was ready. Wow what a meal, thank you so much, will come again.

We went on a hot sunny afternoon 3 adults and a dog we sat in the outside seating aria the staff were fantastic and engaging. The food was delicious . Great service a lovely country pub worth a visit ! We will be back.

Stumbled across the Rising Sun on way to the coast for dinner, stopped for a drink but were so welcomed and loved the surroundings so stayed for food which was delicious- steak and mushroom stroganoff- will definitely be back

Went to the rising sun for mother day,haven't been for a couple of years, family of 5 had a lovely meal, couldn't fault anything would definitely coming back.

Just had lunch at this country pub. Firstly the land-lord and lady are extremely welcoming, with friendly, helpful staff members. Lunch was prompt, very tasty and reasonably priced. I thoroughly recommend this establishment for either a drink by the cosy fireside or to eat in the restaurant. Will definitely be returning

What a lovely revisit. I booked for my friends birthday lunch and it was fabulous. The pub is cosy, rustic, and filled with pre christmas decor. The menu is extensive and well priced. I'd rate the food as 9/10 only falling short on the chips.

If you've ever wished to find the loveliest County pud that's serves amazing food, you need to visit the Rising Sun in Stourmouth. It is simply the finest place, the food offerings are sublime. I've now visited them 3 times in 4 weeks. I've tried the Vegetable soup, it's home made and you literally taste the love that's cooked into it. Next I was treated to the BEST Chateaubriand I have had in many years, the Créme Brulee is to die for, and belive me, having travelled twice monthly to France for over 10 years, I know good Créme Brulee! Second Visit I tried the Paté and Toast, very nice indeed. The pate has a wonderful rich and deep flavour. For my main, I chose the Steak pie. And wow! Not only Full of richly cooked and melt in the mouth steak, the pie crust was fab, its no chip shop pie, it was square and reminded me of a mini castle on a plate! The mashed potatoes, and veggie accompaniment were both well cooked and clearly very fresh. Pud was again, the Créme Brulee. Tonight I was back, (Friday 18th November) bringing my best friend, he Informed me the scampi and chips was as good as he's ever had. I chose the Filled Yorkshire pudding, which is filled and overflows with tender chicken breast, bacon and sweetcorn in a creamy white wine sauce, accompanied by deliciously fresh new potatoes, and a side of seasonal veggies. To sum up, the pubs homely atmosphere is enhanced by the friendly and welcoming attitude of the hosts, Chris and Carol. The food is excellent and well priced. And I honestly cannot wait until I have an excuse to pop back in and sample more food from the menu. I highly recommend the Rising Sun, it's a hidden Treasure on the East Kent Coast, inland a few miles from Minster in Thanet. If you do go and try them out, mention Mark sent you!

A beautiful Sunday lunch for 4, good beer, good wine and good food. A friendly pub and eatery in a country setting, with genuine hosts attentive to all our needs.

Really friendly staff and a lovely venue. On booking we were excited by the extensive menu however the actual food although well presented and absolutely fine to eat was a little disappointing. I would rather have less choice and more home made options. Some of the food appeared to be more freezer staples than chief prepared.

We had lunch here and it was delicious. Midweek so not too busy, great service and friendly staff. Proper short crust pastry pie was like my mum used to make 😍 Both of us had dessert which was also lovely. Will be coming back again soon, can definitely recommend the food.

Had a lovely Sunday lunch here with family. We were seated quickly in a lovely spacious, cool dining hall. The tables are nicely spaced so you don't get chairs from other tables in your back or people squeezing past. Our order was taken quickly and as it was an incredibly hot day we had the ploughman's, except my other half who had the rib eye steak. We had plenty of time for a catch up before our food arrived. Everything was nicely laid out and looked delicious. Desert was ordered and eaten. The Rising Sun mess was gorgeous and the staff did one for a family member with ice cream rather than cream. Nothing was a problem for the staff, who were very polite and courteous. The whole time we were there, about 2½ hours, we were not rushed and had a very enjoyable experience.

We took my partner's parents for a Father's Day lunch. From first contact, when I rang to book, the staff were friendly, helpful and efficient. Nothing was too much trouble, I can't fault them. Very pleasant place to eat and drink.

After a long walk you do not need any hassle, just friendly good service and freshly cooked food. This is what we got!. My colleague who professes to be an expert on liver and bacon said it was the best he had ever tasted!

How to start, what a fantastic country pub. From the moment you walk in you are greated with a lovely warm welcome. The Staff and landlord had time to chat and nothing was a problem they simply could not do enough for you. The Food....

This was the first time we had visited the Rising Sun We had a great meal. Staff very friendly & welcoming.

Absolutely amazing meal, a party of 6 and all very happy. The service was excellent and my steak was a fantastic cut and cooked to perfection. The pepper sauce was very strong which is how I like it, but I can see it being a bit much for some people. The bar area is excellent too, well worth a visit and only 20 mins from Margate or Broadstairs.

The food, comfort, prices and service were all acceptable, but one woman, assumed to be the manager, was so sour-faced, even when thanked for the evening, that it spoilt the overall experience. You take our money, the least you could do is smile graciously.

We came with our friends on Saturday night and had a wonderful evening! We were warmly greeted on arrival, joined our friends in the “lounge” area where we waited until our table was ready which we didn’t wait long for.

Well where do we start? Booked for hubby's birthday meal and decided I would book a room so that he could enjoy a drink and not worry about driving home, once again we were greeted like old friends by our wonderful hosts and the lovely staff. The meal was perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious(we ate far too much) the food here is way better than I've eaten in top restaurant's and consistently so. The room was cosy with everything we needed and more and most importantly it was spotlessly clean and so peaceful. We would recommend the rising sun to everyone. Superb

My husband had the beef pie. 10 out of 10. The waitress was welcoming on arrive and polite and courteous throughout. Came here recently can't fault anything. Perfect as always. Highly recommended steak is lovely and hi highly recommend the paella is great value for money and taste unbelievable. Would come back here again. Been to over places around and this us the benchmark

Went for Sunday lunch - Booked at last moment and lucky to get in as very busy. Very spacious layout with good distance between tables. We both had Sunday Roast - served with fresh vegetables with generous portion sizes. Will definitely visit again.

We had a meal here on a Friday evening, and although the place seemed very quiet, we still found it to be cosy (with couches in corners) and enjoyed a lovely dinner (in the nice dining area). The food was really good and the staff were very friendly.

I would like to point out to the review from Skala69 that I have visited this establishment for several years and not at any time have I or any of my family and friends been disappointed with the food.

Having attended a wedding reception here a couple of years ago I decided to arrange a family meal in celebration of my parents golden wedding anniversary. A party of 17. We were able to decorate the function room which was lovely. The waitress was lovely but the food was very disappointing. The burgers were so dry and inedible however the dog seemed to like it. The chips were not nice either. Soup was £4.75 and wasn’t that nice, it said it came with a crusty roll but it was a burger bun! I think most of the party left a fair amount of their meals which was a shame. We brought my parents a cake and we served it after the desserts, we hoped that teas or coffees would be served but they weren’t. Between us we spent quite abit if money on food and drinks. There were 4 people in the bar during our meal so they weren’t rushed off there feet. We left a tip for the lovely waitress but felt the manager Carol not that friendly at all. Food was very basic and overpriced, really expected better food than we got. Won’t return

Went here for the first this evening for dinner. Hadn’t booked but were made very welcome on arrival by a friendly couple behind the bar who really could not have been more friendly. Ordered some drinks at the bar and decided to sit outside due the lovely warm evening, but were advised that should we want to sit inside if it got too hot we would be more than welcome to move.

We came here to a Christening here a few week back, being out in the sticks didn't realise what a lovely place it was.

Food was lovely, bar was full but yet staff were quick and friendly. When I next come down to Stourmouth, Canterbury, I will pop in for a drink.

A wonderful pub . Good size restaurant with an additional sofa waiting/ relaxing with a drink area. Surroundings modern with plenty of space around the tables. Additional area for parties/wedding receptions etc. that does not impact on the restaurant. Fair size garden with seating for the lovely sunny days.

We had our wedding reception here. We had an absolutely wonderful experience. The staff at The Rising Sun worked very hard and could not have done a better job. The staff decorated the room for us with some decorations which we had brought to match our colour scheme of light blue and also some decorations which The Rising Sun had as well. The room looked absolutely beautiful. We paid for The Rising Sun to provide chair covers and table cloths and it was definitely worth it. With the fairy lights which are already there wound round the wooden beams, the room looked like the perfect rustic venue we had dreamed of.

Visited for the first time with friends and really impressed, from the outside doesn’t have the ‘wow factor’ but inside very modern and well presented. Greeted with a smile and friendly welcome and asked if we wanted to chill out in the comfy chairs whilst making our menu choices for dinner which was a nice touch.

I absolutely love this place, it’s perfect! The owners and staff are so lovely and welcoming. The food is always top quality, they have a very good menu. I also love the location, it’s very pretty and peaceful, especially when it’s sunny so we can sit outside. They also have comfy sofas in front of an open log fire inside for when it’s cold weather, to keep their guests warm and cosy.

We stopped here on our way back home, i haven't been here in years and it certainly has changed, it is still inviting and has a cosy feel but with a modern twist, we sat in the lounge area on comfortable settees, it wasn't very busy at this time as it was late afternoon early evening so i think we got there before the rush as we have been told it can get rather busy.

We visited as a family group and were really impressed by the quality of the food and by the very helpful and attentive waitress. The steaks were exceptional as were the home cooked vegetables. The portions were so generous we were all too full for dessert.The real ales were a bonus. We would certainly go back again

I've been here twice whilst staying locally and both times there has been a wedding. The place has great potential and food was lovely but was made to feel a bit unwelcome, think it's because they were focusing on the function. I'd like to go back but I'd check in advance there wasn't an event going on.

Very slow service "we've been busy" ( the place was 1/2 empty)When the much anticipated food arrived 3 of the mains were inedible. In fairness they offered to replace them but what followed wasn't much better.Very disappointed- it's in a lovely location and could be a gold mine.

My wife and myself went to The Rising Sun for Sunday lunch as we have eaten there several times in the past and have found the food to be excellent. Today was no exception the food was great and the service really good, staff very friendly and surroundings were beautiful. For a good meal at reasonable prices I would recommend giving this restaurant a try.

Wow these guys made my 50th birthday meal a real treat. We had started our evening at the duck inn where the food was so bad we left early so decided to try the rising sun as we had often driven past. So very glad we did, the food was wonderful,the atmosphere was relaxed and happy and the staff charming and welcoming even though they had a huge party in. We can heartily recommended the rising sun to everyone and we will be returning as soon as we are back in the country. We will also be bringing friends.

My family and I attended a wedding reception here on the 10th June. Obviously a lot of people were arriving at the same time, this caused some problems in the car park as it was quite small, however when parked and went in we found that there was another car park on the other side of the pub bear this in mind. We went round to the gardens at the back of the pub, there was a lawned area and a large patio area, this was all clean and tidy. The inside of the pub was also clean and tidy apart from the gents toilet being blocked. This was rectified quite quickly, we found it strange that we were not allowed to go into the room that was set out for the reception but later found that the landlords wanted the Bride and Groom to see it first. The reception meal was a BBQ and was cooked freshly in front of us all, it did get somewhat smokey in the gardens but what BBQ doesn't. The food was good and other family members said that they had eaten there before and the food was lovely. All in all a very pleasant experience, parents need to be aware that if they have children in the garden area there is nothing to stop them going into the car parks and ultimately the road.

We used to love to visit this country pub/restaurant every now and then and found the owners and the food pleasant but today the food was absolutely awful the Sunday roast was inedible tough meat with No roast potatoes Yorkshire hard and inedible most of the staff seemed pleasant enough, bar one girl with a ponytail who threw our plates on the table when we asked for bread obviously not having a good day, a bit like us what a shame we shan't go again.

We were recommended this pub/restaurant whilst staying on holiday in the area. We phoned to book a table and were very pleasantly surprised when they confirmed they accept dogs. I am fussy with my food, but all dishes were beautifully cooked, well presented and delicious. We actually booked for the following night as we enjoyed it so much. The staff and helpful and friendly and there is just a lovely atmosphere throughout. We just couldn’t fault it.

We have been dining here for nearly 12 years now, when the present owners were relatively new and they have added a fantastic extension with beams and a wood burning stove, all wood.In the years we have been coming, we have never had a bad meal and the atmosphere is buzzing. The menu has a good assortment, which will suit all types including children.Big enough for a large party, they are very pleasant the owners usually take time out for a chat. We have introduced many friends here and all have enjoyed the food and surroundings.

We ate here as part of a large birthday group. Very nicely surprised by the spacious Conservatory style dining area The food had been pre-orderd. All three courses were delicious. We were a party of 14 and we were all served in good time and not one person had a single grumble or complaint about anything their plates. The chicken kiev was a huge, proper chicken breast ( not some pumped up supermarket type), the steaks were perfectly cooked and looked succulent and tasty. very generous portions. The roast beef was a little light on meat for some of the men but all agreed it was tasty. The roast potatoes were perfection.. hand cut chips were good too. (I ate too much of both). I didnt like my dessert, of banoffee pie as it was too sweet for me but I think that was more because of my taste than there being anything wrong with it. Everything was clearly homemade.The surroundings in the rest of the pub were lovely. Even the Ladies was clean and fragrant . Will definitely be going back there.

Warm welcome when we arrived where we went into a room to make our order for food. Went into another room to sit down where the startes came out pretty quick. All seemed good...I went for the carrot and coriander soup. Watery with no flavour. Then for main I had a sausage ploughman's which was with apple which was on the turn. Few chrisps and 2 stick slices. I didn't want to Wright this review but it was the rude male owner at the end once he took my money which pissed me off... "everything OK with your meal?" To which I said "yea lovely but just a bit of feedback about the soup, it was just to Watery" I didn't like the no response and evil look I received from the showmanistic owner when he went and spoke to another customer. Constructive criticism mate, maby use cream to thicken up your soup not water???

Have visited many times over the years. If you like good beer and an open fire with comfortable seating, this is the place for you. Good for bar lunches and a superb restaurant with plenty of seating. Reasonable selection of wines, ales, ciders, etc. All food cooked from fresh so worth the wait, which isn't long. Plenty of parking spaces. Situated out of the way in a lovely rural area, not far from the Kentish Stour. Rooms available, but we haven't used them. Staff very friendly and helpful.

Booked a meal to meet friends before Christmas and the first thing that struck us was that the place was deserted. In fact we were the only people eating on a Saturday night! Would have been nice to been offered the chance to eat in the bar area instead of the large bare room with music on repeat. Putting aside the lack of atmosphere, the food was also very average and not worth the money. So unfortunately a disappointing visit.

After a very pleasant weekend at the beach house we decided to book a Sunday lunch before the drive back to London. We had booked a table of 6 (included 2 children) and were seated after ordering a round of drinks from the at the bar. The main dining room is really nice and bright with plenty of space. The service and the food was impeccable. Our children were well and truly fussed over adding to a very relaxed Sunday lunch. The dessert board was the icing on the cake for me personally. Not one dessert that I would not have eaten. Everyone in our group agreed that we will be returning the next time we are in town. A true find for us.

Arriving at The Rising Sun to find somewhere that was serving food was like arriving at an oasis when you are thirsty. Our party was met with a warm, welcoming greeting as we walked through the door. The environment was great - it was clean and well-decorated. After ordering drinks we were invited to sit in comfortable arm chairs around a lovely open fire while we made our food choices. After an appropriate amount of time, our orders were taken and we were left to enjoy the environment. A little while later we were invited through to the restaurant where were served with well-presented, beautifully cooked and extremely delicious home-made, home-cooked food. The service was friendly and efficient. What more can I say - you've got to try this place out for yourselves. I will definitely be going back.

A wonderful evening with great entertainment, Mel Harris was brilliant.The 3 course meal was so sixties it was perfect. Chris & Carol are lovely hosts & there staff are so professional. We were so well look after and looking forward to a return visit.

Last visited about 8 months ago .Had exactly the same ....i.e.:2 roast beef Sunday lunches and one dessert .All was average and not as good as last few visits ( chef change ?)Beef ok but roast potatoes rock hard and the Yorkshire puddings were flat and not totally cooked I think .bit more like a cafe than a pub standard And the apple and raspberry crumble was just a pile of stodge ...No proper crumble , no crumb .Not a difficult pudding to get right really .We eat everything as we were hungry but compared to previous visits very dissapointing I'm sorry to report . Staff are nice but we won't be returning until we read better reports .Possibly a bit complacent in the kitchen.I wouldn't put anyone off as it's a nice location etc...but needs to get back to how it was ✍️

We've just had a spur of the moment, birthday lunch at the Rising Sun and could not have wished for better locally. Greeted by a very nice lady as we walked in and made us feel very welcome. We ordered drinks and meals and were offered a sofa in the bar until our meals were served in the restaurant. Sausage mash and peas in a lovely gravy for me....and ham egg and chips for my wife! Classic pub grub, our choice, but a very good menu to choose from. The meals were served perfectly and the service was excellent. Puddings to die for too! The restaurant and bar were exceptionally clean and we will definitely be back to eat and drink here again. Well done Rising Sun, you're doing an excellent job!

What a lovely place in the heart of the country side Nr Preston Kent .We were invited to a family members Ruby Wedding last Saturday evening , there must have been 80/100 guests .The Tables were laid out beautifully & the room looked very cosy.They had laid on a BBQ & a buffet , food was superb with the BBQ there was lamb chops, steak , pork , sausages & burgers . The buffet had fresh salmon, prawns , cold meats & all the usual salads .

We were really impressed with everything this pub/restaurant has to offer, great food and selection of wines, really friendly owners, lovely comfy sofas in the bar areas, beautiful dining areas and plenty of outside seating. We loved our first visit and have already booked to return.

We went on a Monday evening with our 2 dogs. We were warmly greeted and actually chatted to the chef before ordering. We were sat at a table large enoughfor the dogs to lay under so they were no bother. The mushroom starter is to die for and highly recommended. Both our mains were fantastic 1 chicken pie, 1 fish.Hubby struggled to eat all his bread and butter pudding as it was our anniversary we normally push the boat out and share a cheese board unfortunately we couldn't manage it. So not to be defeated we are going back on Friday to try again! Can't think of a better way to end our holiday thanks to everyone at the Rising Sun.

Called in at this beautifully located (and decorated) pub: restaurant, really enjoyed sitting outside supping a beer and chose to have food. Menu, in my opinion is a little 'dated' however, the starter of natchos (needing more cheese in my opinion) were nice but the main surpassed expectation- I had the pie! It was lovely! Well cooked and presented and at a reasonable cost! Friendly and accommodating to myself, the Missis and the pooch. Thank you
