Amazing location and the ambience of the pub has always been its key attraction. But the service is just so hit and miss. Staff more interested in chatting to their mates at bar then serving customers. Food was average but service made it really hard work.

What a great place! Aesthetically unrivalled - the atmospheric hygge feel in winter - candle lit corners, roaring fires, reflective beaten bronze bar, all just add to the character of this old inn. Staff that go above and beyond with extensive knowledge of their products, and live music that offers foot stomping musical diversity that can't be found in pubs nowadays. And the pizza, oh god its incredible! Summer in this pub garden, overlooked by the unique gypsy caravan and yurt, and looked upon by pine trees and beautifully cared for flowering banks, can be a serene pint in nature or a festival break with music and dancing! We are blessed to call this our local!

What a little gem the Lantern is. A friendly, cosy, welcoming hostelry, steeped in history and authentically refurbished. The staff and owners couldn't be more friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble, the food is delicious and the bar really well stocked with local beers and a great selection of spirits. There is accommodation on site to stay in, the apartment has to be seen to be believed, it's stunning. I am so glad I found this delightful place.

We went to this pub for a meal as it is close to home, but soon changed my mind , what a dark dingy place, they might as well paint the walls black. The food was definitely not a la carte, I know as my Brother is an Excellent chef. The salmon was overcooked and greasy and the fish fingers were mainly batter. No Italian Pinot grigio, so I tried a different white wine £11.50 a glass. What a ridiculous price to charge. We also ordered a brandy and ginger ale, but we got a can of ginger beer ??? Then when the bill came, we got charged £14 for service ???? Completely illegal. DONT go here it's definitely not worth it. Much nicer pubs out there.

The best roast potato’s we’ve ever had at a restaurant! I’ve eaten at many restaurants/pubs and although the roast dinners have been tasty, they never seem to be able to get the roasties right! Well here they have mastered them!! Beautifully crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, could not fault them. The dinner was delicious. The belly pork was a tad fatty which with this cut of meat that’s to be expected but would be so much better if the fat was crispy!! (Just a preference) I have an allergy to dried garlic salt/granules/powder, but not fresh garlic. The chef came out to check with me the extent of my allergy which I thought was really good. They don’t use either so all was good! The service was professional and friendly, although a tad slow at times, but it was extremely busy and we were in no rush! We will most definitely be back, as I’d like to try the desserts next time too as all sounded delicious!!

We live in Dover and have been returning to the lantern thoughout our lives. The current incarnation left us happy and full. The historic old English setting is a constant and at the moment is contrasted by the happy reggae playing but it works. Along with the service, the music gives an energy. Two of the four of us had short rib, one battered sea bass and the other a chicken burger. Aterations to sides were welcomed and the service was really friendly, attentive and earnest. We felt valued and looked after. The food was delicious and beer choice was great too. Lots of locals making the atmosphere rich and warm. We'll be back.

Our visit for a Sunday lunch could have been so much better. The first thing we noticed whilst waiting to be seated was the pall of smoke hanging across the restaurant area and highlighted by the bar down-lighters. Whilst the smell of wood smoke was initially nice I could still smell it the day after on my clothes. Next issue was how cold the place was despite sitting closish to the fire. Roast beef dinner turned up nice and quick, and was generally delicious however the beef was cold, the cauliflower cheese mushy and definitely microwaved and the pigs in blankets were one large wrapped sausage each, a bit unusual. Our sever was very friendly but never offered the desert menu. That said by then we were both so cold we were glad to leave back to a warm car. One last comment. This was very expensive, 2 dinners, 1 drink! 2 sides £95.

The best Sunday dinner in Kent by a country mile. Not cheap but worth every penny. Staff are polite and very friendly. Not sure what else to say perfection ! The chef couldnt cook frozen breaded squid , it was burnt and rubberised, I sent it back and was told that's how it is. We also had to wait for one starter as they forgot it . The roast arrived swimming in gravy with a limp Yorkshire. Then the desert we all order brownies but had never seen one like this it was covered in chocolate with what I would call uncooked dough inside that was so sweet more something you would have a piece of . I can't see how any chef can get so much wrong on a Sunday roast with only 2 option of starter and dessert. It was the worst I have ever tasted and at £29 for a beef roast that was like a school dinner .we certainly would not recommend while they have this chef . The staff were nice and reduced the bill drastically.

We turned up to a lovely pub, the setting was beautiful. My partner and I visited this pub 2 Years ago and it was unreal! So we decided to mention to my parents about coming here. So we did and what a mistake that was. To start the starters, only of two. One being the squid which was horrific! Like chewing a burnt chicken nugget, two the creamy mushrooms which was like a tin on toast! The toast came which was “OK” cauliflower cheese was like water. When mentioned this got told they had run out of normal milk so used almond milk??? Glad I’m not intolerant to nuts but if someone had of been, that would have not been pleasant. Then come to the dessert, we all had brownie, raved up by one of the waitresses. This wasn’t as brownie this was more like a fudge! Really gutted and won’t be going back in a rush! Only good thing. Was unfortunately didn’t get his name, was really accommodating and took off certain things From the bill

Food. Five people attending. We ate at 7.30 pm on a Saturday evening. There were 6 items on the main menu. They had run out of cod, i.e., fish and chips, but offered sea bass as a replacement ?2 rib-eyed steaks ordered as medium well done. One came as medium rare. Burgers were good. No squid, which was also on the menu for starters, but white bait offered as a replacement . Only ice cream variations for dessert. We asked for the possibility of a cheese selection. They returned from the kitchen and offered chedder, goats cheese, and brie, but no crackers - however offered bread. Service charge was an automatic 12.5%. Atmosphere. Ok.

It's a very old pub with low ceilings very oldie worldly. Welcomed by staff when entered. My wife ordered the lamb roast I had the steak. Presentation was good. The lamb leg was very fatty which my wife couldn't eat my steak was done ok, the vegetables were not so good I'm afraid the potatoes were over cooked instead of cutting into them you had to saw them the green beans were rubbery the cabbage was white cabbage a bit hard the roast parsnips and carrots were good and tasty also the Yorkshire puddings were good, but the dishes were too salty. We then had Eaton mess again the dish tasted very tart and tasted very shop bought ingredients. I'm sorry to say the whole experience was not good and the ingredients tasted very much like shop bought ingredients. The cook apparently wanted to go home early. The risotto under the salmon was not warm. Slightly pricey, eg 2 glasses of 'house' wine the waiter brought was £22.00, but that is not what I am concerned about. When presented with the bill an additional £14.50 'service charge' had been added unbeknown to me as it was not show on the menu prices. When I queried it I was told the system automatically added it and it was not required as it was optional, so could be removed (if you noticed it). I did remove it as the service was not exactly exeptional. I wonder how many miss that addition. Whilst it was resolved, it should not have been added in the first instance without making me aware there was an optional charge.

What an absolute gem of a place. My partner and I were driving back from Deal, after having help her move out and as usual my partner decided to take a little drive around. He was hoping to find that place he used to go camping with his friends when he was a teenager. We find it, find what used to be the pub he remembered, but it had been changed into a home. Then, we saw that really small sign for The Lantern Inn, and there it was, this 17th century pub, looking just like it would have done when first built, once inside, it was just like walking back in time. The decor was so English pub feels, the personnel are so friendly, and the food is just 5* - finally a place that serve my prosecco to the top of the glass. Candle lit dinner we ended up having. The menu is just enough to satisfy your craving... There was a choice of steaks, vegan burgers and meat burgers, and others. We left very satisfied customers... But after driving all the way back home to Ashford, I realised I had left my handbag. As soon as I called and mentioned it was the couple who just add dinner, straight away, they recognised who it was and had already find it and put it aside for collection. In the end, we decided to return the next day to have roast dinner with some friends. And oh my goodness, what a roast it was... Our pork was cooked to perfection, moist, tasty, and the crackling was so tasty and crunchy. All was so delicious that I could eat there daily....

Small pub/restaurant. Ate Sunday lunch here with family. The owners and staff are fantastic and the decor is a lot of fun as well. They have a small kitchen so the food takes a little time to appear. Sunday portions are right-sized so although I wanted more meat and food I got the right portion. Not as keen on the larger beet offering among the roast veggies hence the 4-star rating. Would recommend.

Visited for food and a couple of nights in the self-catering accommodation above the pub. The apartment is furnished in a very "interesting" way with period pieces, artwork, and antiques. You will either love it or be alarmed by it. Perhaps have a look at some pictures before you book? Heating fine (although we did have to set the clock on the central heating so that it came on at the programmed times), beds comfortable (but a rather heavy duvet), lighting a bit dim for reading (but plenty of books available), nice kitchen (but rather short on crockery etc., and surprisingly no place that four people could sit to eat any food prepared). Nice pub (and cat) with cocktails and well-cared-for beer. Food hearty (at a full price).

Best pub I have been. Amazing place, cozy, great music and the food was fantastic. Joe looked after us incredibly well, how he managed to serve everyone by himself was beyond us. Please make a trip to this pub, you will not be disappointed.

We have a few birthdays in our family around Christmas so we thought we’d treat the family to a meal out to celebrate . There were 13 of us and we went for a Sunday Roast . We all enjoyed the lovely food / drinks and had a great evening . The staff were helpful and friendly and there was great Motown/ soul music playing in the background what more could you ask for .

We were a party of 20, the team were so accommodating, and worked out the best way for us to all be seated. We went on a Sunday so had the roast which was delicious. Friendly staff, lovely atmosphere, and great food!!!!!! Would really recommend

Expected more for the price. Friendly and very dog friendly staff. Slow service as seemed only 2 of the staff were doing all the work. Lamb roast was more fat than meat Chicken roast was better but fiddly getting the meat off the bones. They both had good veg however with the limited meat they were not worth the price. Coffee unfortunately wasn’t any good either. Service charge added which we felt wasn’t justified Small and limited car park.

We live locally and we're looking for a new pub to meet in, for our Sunday afternoon drinks. So, we decided to try the Lantern. What a mistake. No welcome when we entered (4 of us) when trying to order, most of our initial requests were met with, "We don't have it or just run out". Atmosphere 0, the Guy behind the bar was more interested in their cat which was sitting on the bar !! There were 2girls who tried to help but were asked to carry on with thier duties by the manager/ owner, and once we received our drinks they were very expensive compared to ALL the other local hostelries. A couple of ladies walked in asked for a menu and after some time left as they had been totally ignored !!!

What an odd experience! Originally treated like I wasn't expected to be there to essentially forgotten about..in the end we just walked out, due to a lack of communication....

If I could give 6 stars or more I would. We found the Marquis of Granby whilst looking for somewhere pet friendly to stay before travelling back to Europe via the channel tunnel. We arrived late on Thursday evening only to discover I'd booked the wrong date - the staff were incredibly accommodating in finding us a room and changing the booking. When we left I forgot my charger and Silva went out of his way to contact me & let me know, and offer to post the charger to me. Incredible service, and on top of that the food was outstanding, they have a wonderful selection of local wines and the place is truly dog friendly - they were even able to join us for breakfast.

Wonderful food and faultless service. Being a pub can be noisy, but that is to be expected as people just enjoying themselves

17 year old ‘Bouncer’ was loudly making rude comments about my wife to the bartender. Seating and furniture tired and uncomfortable.

Hotel rooms were adequate, nice roll top bath, but no hot water!! Breakfast staff were surly and rude. Basically poor, I would not recommend this hotel to a friend.

Never go in cafe again . Why fo these places discriminate against dogs . I felt hurt and upset . My dog loves visiting cafes and was so excited only to be told I could go in even though we were going to sit outside . Rude and obnoxious lady . Don't deserve one star at all
