The inn is great, we stopped for lunch and both had the roast beef (which was delicious), we also each had a starter which were also excellent. The staff were friendly, accommodating and knowledgeable. It is dog friendly and he was made to feel welcome. The beer was also very good.

A very cozy pub. We stayed there for one night on our return journey from England to Germany. The room was comfortably furnished. The bed was very comfortable. We slept very well. The bathroom was super chic. The food in the pub was very tasty and filling. The staff was extremely nice and helpful. Because we had to check out very early, we asked for a doggy bag. This consisted of a croissant, jam, juice and a green banana. Compared to the breakfast offerings on the menu, it's rather disappointing.

We were disappointed with our meal tonight. A real shame, as we do like to support local restaurants. No-one came to ask us whether everything was ok. Maybe, our waitress needed more training? The fillet steak was over cooked, and my main wasn’t very hot. When commenting on our meal, we just got an apology, a shrug of the shoulders, and that was it. A good wine menu, though. Not sure we will be back.

We booked online on their website a table for Easter Monday for dinner. We got a reservation confirmation by e-mail by their booking engine. When we arrived, we were surprised that the parking lot was empty. Inside we learned: it was closed due to the public holiday and they did not honor our reservation since the kitchen was closed. We had the best memories in 2015. So we were looking forward to dining here again. At least they helped to find a restaurant which was open for guests. They promised to give us a free meal, but since we are in Dover maybe every 3-5 years only, I do not expect them that they will keep their promise if we show up in a couple of years. We also tried to book a room, but e-mails were not attended.

I wanted to leave a review because the team here were exceptionally helpful and considerate. I can't eat dairy, but I had booked the Christmas lunch with my friends and planned just to take some lactase tablets with my food, as I'd rather not be a pain. However, I got there early and ordered a coffee at the bar with soya milk. The waitress asked about my lunch choices, and I explained I'd planned on just having lactase. She offered me a non dairy main alternative, and the chef also made my pudding without dairy.

We had afternoon tea here earlier in the year and it was excellent, sadly our visit this time was very disappointing. Our tea selection was put on the table and we never saw a waitress again. We had one cup of tea each and were not offered another one, what ever happened to a lovely teapot accompanying the sandwiches and cakes which I have to say were not very exciting.

Visited with friends for Sunday lunch having booked for 12:30. Arrived a bit early and waited for friends in the lounge and were offered drinks but decided to wait until we were seated. When we went to our table rather surprised to see we were the only people in the restaurant although it did fill up later, The Sunday lunch menu offer three or four choices, including vegetarian, and is not just the traditional roast. I had soused and torched mackerel to start which was excellent. followed by a fillet of hake on a bed of crushed new potatoes and curried cauliflower which was really tasty and perfectly cooked. All the others did go for the roast beef and it was absolutely superb, with all the traditional trimmings. Two of us managed to cram a dessert in and coffee to follow. All in all with excellent quality and choice of food and a bill of £30 each tis represents very good value. Service was friendly and professional, so probably the best offer for Sunday lunch in the Folkestone/Dover area.

Sadly we won’t be trying the food here. We were bought a voucher as a present and thought it ran out the end of October only to realise expiry date was the 26th. We called to see if they would honour as wanted to celebrate our anniversary with lunch but we’re told “Definitely No!”. Apparently it is under new management and would not be honoured. So someone has had money for nothing!! We won’t be going here on principle now and we will let our family know too as someone else has a voucher to use . No more vouchers for here will be bought as presents in the future.

We stayed here for 1 night and had dinner in the restaurant. All the members of staff we encountered were polite, friendly and helpful. We booked a deluxe room - the decor was very outdated, carpets in need of a deep clean and a very strange bathroom layout with equally odd lighting arrangements, uncomfortable mattress and a blind which failed to keep out the light from the street lamp opposite.

Not a good choice on the menu, son and daughter in law had the lamb, they both struggled to cut it, you can do good “posh food” better than that, they are trying to be something they are not, think the new Marco Pierre white restaurant in town will out price them with better food. our bill for 4 was over £200.00 , dinner for 4 with 2 drinks each. Cmon this is Dover not London ! Don’t have a problem paying for overpriced food if it’s worth it. Wouldn’t recommend this place bad food and the service, TERRIBLE!

The food was absolutely, the most delicious food i’ve eaten in several years and my partner agreed. Honestly I would reccommend to everyone and anyone, really really delicious. As for portion sizes, as I read other reviews I completely disagree, my partner and I aren’t the skinniest of people nor the largest so when the food came out, in my head I thought (oh I could eat more than that) as you do, but the sizes were perfect, I couldn’t eat more! The appearance was as good as the taste and it did indeed fill me up. Not enough to try the cheesecake of course ;) even that was out of this world. Service was perfect, price was acceptable, food was out of this world. All staff deserve a pat on the back!

Five stars or one star? I hate negative reviews and never give them but this one has me in a quandary. I have dined at this restaurant on numerous occasions and friends have stayed here a couple of times. Without exception we have always been happy. On this occasion the meal and service were excellent as always. My problem, if it is one in other people's eyes, came when I was presented with the bill. Without exception when paying by credit card I always enquire if I put the gratuity on the cc do the actual staff receive the money. invariably the answer is yes they do but not on this occasion. I was told that the staff would receive nothing if I paid this way. I then proceeded to provide the gratuity in cash but I was very annoyed by this. I thought this practice had been outlawed in the UK over the last couple of years and restaurants could not now do this. For a restaurant of this standing to indulge in this practice is not acceptable and I have little doubt some customers have been misled into thinking the staff have received a 10% gratuity when in fact it has gone to the management. Totally unacceptable in my eyes. I have not yet made up my mind whether I will return but if I do I will certainly be checking on their gratuity policy and I suggest others do the same.

A Sunday lunch to celebrate a family birthday just lacked the atmosphere and attention to detail that we would expect from The Marquis and also which did not match the highly professional manner in which our booking was taken. The food was good and nicely presented but the service was ..well adequate at best . The two waitresses were friendly enough and did their best but there did not seem to be anyone managing the restaurant and it all felt very ‘unloved’. We had to ask for accompanying sauces rather than being offered them as food delivered and then having to go out into reception to ask to have your table cleared after a very very long wait just is not the done thing. The bar/lounge was cold and soulless, no fire lit on a bitterly cold winters day, and just none of the higher end service and finishing touches we have experienced here before and we were so under whelmed to the extent that we would now not be in any hurry to go back. We are lucky enough to have so many really good places to eat in the vicinity that there is no need to re visit places that you could not honestly say met expectations. A real shame . After our visit we raised some specific issues with the management, it will be very interesting to see if we get any kind of response.

Service was excellent, timely but unobtrusive, and impeccably smart and mannered. In 2015 we went here and we paid an awful lot of money for nothing but the pretence of a good restaurant in the 70s. We got that wonderful experience of feeling like we were treated like guests in an exclusive place. We sat down, had good cocktails.... well, not that special any more. We had to wait and I couldn't help feeling that this establishment thought it could get away with murder. The food was ok... ish. I've had better steak at branded restaurants in London. The young man who served us was excellent, and he is now elsewhere. This place is making food expensive with little justification now.

Having had two excellent meals here in the past, admittedly some years ago, we decided it was time for a return visit. We were greeted and seated as soon as we arrived and immediately informed that there were no triple cooked chips. Not a big deal except they only offer four side dishes and so were down to three already as no substitution was offered.I was pleased to find that a gluten free bread roll was available but sadly that was the high point of the evening as far as my meal was concerned. The butter was so soft that it was almost pourable. My main course, the rib eye was inedible: it was simultaneously blue on the inside and yet so burnt on the outside that the only flavour was charcoal. It was frankly one of the worst pieces of meat I have ever been served. Later on during the evening we overheard another diner making the same complaint, and once home on checking previous reviews it seems that someone else had that same issue a few short weeks ago. This is obviously a problem which needs addressing. The other mains were okay but not outstanding and neither were the desserts. The staff seemed inexperienced and had to be reminded to provide the correct cutlery - it was difficult enough to cut the beef with a steak knife but almost impossible with a dinner knife. If The Marquis wants to be known as a fine dining experience it has an awful lot to learn.

Beautiful rooms but don't scratch beneath the surface...Housekeepers very rarely hoover the rooms, the tea tray is washed in the sink in the room (with shampoo, body wash, a cleaning product or anything else they find) and dried on a towel used by the previous guest! The glasses are either sprayed with glass cleaner or just dried using the same method as the tea tray. Showers and baths are just given a courtesy 'wipe' to dry them off and the toilet seat is wiped with a dirty towel, or the same cloth that is used to wash the tea tray. All this from the lady who was or used to be the head housekeeper. I lasted a few weeks before leaving, I can't work in a place that doesn't have standards (Oh and I did hoover and clean properly, despite being told not too!)On the plus side, the food is nice, everything is homemade and the kitchen is clean. Perhaps the kitchen staff should give the housekeeping staff a lesson in cleanliness?!

We last visited the Marquis some months ago for lunch. There were six of us then. The meal at the time was very disappointing so my review caused the restaurant to get in touch and send a voucher for a replacement meal for two. We visited today for lunch. The menu was an 'Acquired ' taste. Mackerel with gooseberries and water melon, Ox tongue with a few picked vegetables or Curried carrot soup. The Mackerel with gooseberries was served slightly warm with a soft skin, it was very acidic verging on sour. The Ox tongue tasted and looked like sliced cooked beef with hardly any flavour. The main course we opted for the Belly Pork which was served with chopped potatoes and cabbage. The pork skin was soft and under it was a lot of soft fat. The vegetables were cooked well but were overwhelmed by the chilly/curry heat which would have been nice to have known about prior to ordering. Dessert was Mango cheesecake and a chocolate Marquis? The cheesecake was very sweet and very firm it was served with two fruit pastilles. The roll was date and walnut which was very doughy. Service was okay but I hate being referred to as ' You Guys' . I would have liked to have seen some fresh seasonal produce like strawberries or summer pudding. Fresh peas and green beans are also in the shops now. We have been to the Marquis now several times now, however I do feel that something needs to change. The restaurant today was almost empty despite the car park being quite full when we arrived. I requested a window seat on the booking, when we were seated we were asked to sit in the middle of the restaurant even though it was half empty. What is the point of the comments box if they are not read!

After arriving late I wanted to have a light meal. The fish on vegetables and potatoes was very nice. Just enough to leave some space for a really delicious chocolate desert.

We visited for Sunday lunch today. VERY disappointing lunch.Starter of goats cheese panacotta runny needed a spoon to eat it. Bread rolls doughy.Main roast beef chewy and roast potatoes rubbery, cauliflower cheese sitting what resembled milk, broccoli mushy. Wine warm. Only one waiting staff working and the poor girl was run off her feet but very pleasant. £70 per couple not worth the money we won't be returning for Sunday lunch or parting with our hard earned cash to pay for it as it was a special treat to go there. Not overly busy. As we were not asked if everything was ok with our meal we paid the bill and left, truthfully we should have asked for our money back.

Really cute pub, with lovely fairy lights inside and a nice big garden at the back. The service is fab, friendly and helpful. Good price for the drinks and food. The food isn’t fancy, but we had a tasty big plate of scampi and chips.

Such a lovely dog friendly pub. We arrived in Sandwich for a weekend away and couldn’t have found a nicer, friendlier pub. Food was exceptional and the waiting staff were very attentive.

We stayed in one of the balcony rooms, the room was huge with lovely decor. There was a big bath in the room. We had a balcony right by the beach which was also lovely. I would recommend this hotel and would stay again.
