Great find, good food, friendly and efficient staff, great ambience. Everyone smiling, customers and staff who seemed to enjoy their job. Dog friendly, even treats for dogs (if they are well behaved) Just what a country pub should be! Improtue Sunday lunch. Buzzing atmosphere and excellent selection of beers ...pity I was driving this time, but will be back!! Well done.

I like to use this pub after a nice canal walk but now have to have a full meal. A few years back, one could get lovely sandwich's with fries and other bar snacks. Come on Red House, not everyone wants a big main course at lunchtime

This is a beautiful pub in the countryside. We had a family special occasion dinner here for 17 people. The food was superb, drinks plentiful and all ran very smoothly with friendly and efficient service. Perfect - cannot really say much more.

A lovely spacious pub 🍻 in the middle of country lanes. Nice atmosphere and the staff were really friendly and helpful 😁 I had a nice half pint and tried the vegan fish and chips, which was surprisingly tasty, it certainly was filling and the sorbet was a nice desert. Access ♿ was good and the staff very accommodating. I'd certainly pop in again if I were stopping in the area. Thanks for hosting me 👍💪

Was pretty busy busy for a wet Wednesday lunchtime, but we were made very welcome, and ate very well.

My good friend and I went there for a fish and chip lunch today 21/2/24. The waitress was friendly and jovial , which I always like. The fish and chips came well presented, with mushy peas and tartar sauce. To be honest, after living in Brixham for 7 yrs , the home of fishing trawlers , I was just expecting the run of the mill fish covered in batter. Well, was I wrong, the batter was thin and nicely crispy, not oily at all, the fish was beautifully cooked, flakey and tasty. Just enough chunky chips to complement the meal. I fully recommend the red house for this , and several other great looking meals that went past us. Will return soon.

The food and service was excellent. The cheese Souffle was the best I have every tasted. We were so well looked after by Lilly and Ben. Wonderful place. Will definately returning.

Celebrated my birthday with a roast lunch at the Red House with all my family. Food was excellent, can highly recommend the beef! The staff were very friendly and attentive, restaurant was lovely with beautiful views across the marsh beds! Highly recommend 👍🙂

We chose to have our low-key wedding dinner here, and certainly believe we chose well. The food is good quality, and of a slightly higher yet reasonable price. A 3 course meal will cost you between 30 and 50 pounds. 10 meals of mostly 3 courses only set us back 320 ish pounds. Lovely staff and picturesque location, but could use some more vegetarian options.

This was our second visit to the Red House as a britstop (staying overnight in our motorhome and eating in the pub). Both occasions have been excellent. We bring our deerhound with us and she is really welcomed into the pub by both the staff and other guests. It is very dogfriendly. We were welcomed too! Had a great chat with the proprietor and the chef brought his doggie down to meet ours. We love the food here, my husband had 3 starters for his meal and raved about the cheese soufflé. I had the steak, which was a delicious and tender piece of meat, perfectly cooked medium rare. We will definitely be back!

A little disappointed. Booked a table and arrived on time. Quite a few people came in just after us. Had to wait a long time for service. 45 minutes before orders were taken. Food was good as usual but this slowness is becoming a habit. My wife and her friend had a similar experience a few weeks ago.

Lovely country pub serving local draught cider and fabulous food.

Celebrated our Civil Partnership at The Red House yesterday and the whole experience was nothing short of perfect! The venue itself is a perfect country pub - thatched with a very homely atmosphere in the beautiful Berkshire countryside. We used the private dining room just off the main restaurant, which was absolutely ideal for our party of 10. The food was just amazing! We wanted our guests to choose their preferred dishes, rather than have have a one course fits all, which worked perfectly. The kitchen presented all the courses on time and piping hot and the comments from the guests were very complimentary. The service was second to none and we MUST reserve special praise for Maureen, who made sure our day was very special - Thank you Maureen! Recommend without reservation.

Visited for the first time last weekend with a friend for lunch. The pub was full and had a lovely atmosphere. The service was great throughout, friendly and responsive. Can recommend the arancini and cod with chorizo and ratatouille which were delicious. Good value and well presented too. Looking forward to bringing the family.

Came to The Red House on what appeared to be a busy Sunday with my elderly parents and we could not have asked for a better experience. The team despite running around and having large groups were attentive and a delight. A special mention should go to Ben who was simply charming and it was nice to see my often austere mother smile so much. Roast was of a great portion and quality, will be coming back when in the area again.

A large group of us needed a dog friendly location for lunch, after a pup meet up near Newbury. I found The Red House on line and they were very helpful and organised. Really good communication which was essential for 10 people with around 6 dogs! The food was as described and very good! The staff were helpful and service quick. A lovely pub which is very welcoming and dog inclusive. Thank you!

A long overdue girls lunch. The last time we were here was pre-Covid and we decided to make a return visit for a ladies pre Xmas lunch. The food was excellent as was the service. Despite the restaurant being extremely busy, the staff didn’t rush us and Ben-our waiter needs a particular mention as one of our group had some allergies. He checked with the Chef to reassure us that certain ingredients would be left out. We are going to return in January for a second outing. We are so lucky to have this place on our doorstop. Well done The Red House!!

Friendly and helpful staff and we had a pleasant time. Most enjoyed their meals but the thai vegetable curry was stodgy and uninspired. It also needed a better selection of vegetables and no potatoes.

Not sure how the last few reviews were so bad. We had a lovely lunch served by charming youngsters and a very nice man who we think was the owner. We sat in the restaurant which was a bit bleak and chilly, the bit by the door was being used for storage which didn't add to the ambience!, We would go back for sure but would reserve in the bar area. A rare find.

We had a family Sunday lunch together. The roast beef was excellent, tender and slightly pink. Roast potatoes and veg was so good. Service is very good; courteous & attentive, but not in ya face. Well done staff you could teach other restaurants how n Newbury a thing or two.

Lovely Sunday roast and appreciate the opportunity to have a smaller helping! I am gluten intolerant and there was plenty of choice for me including the melt in the mouth sticky toffee pudding. Very smiley and helpful staff - would definitely return.

We visited here recently having eaten here countless times over the past few years, this time we wanted to try a Sunday lunch. Upon arrival we were absolutely horrified to discover that basically ‘Children are not welcome’ here on a Sunday. There is no Children’s menu in operation and when we enquired if they were able to make something off the regular Children’s menu as an exception the rude waiter said no - all that was possible was a half portion of an adult roast (which neither of my toddlers would eat). I asked for him to check this was definitely all that was possible as it seemed very inflexible ( especially as the place wasn’t even half full!) ; he asked the manager in front of us who abruptly shrugged and said no. The only suggestion being a ‘bowl of chips’. Dreadful. As we were there with other family members who were hungry we had to stay and eat their mediocre roast whilst my Children ate their greasy bowl of chips and then i had the joy of driving straight home and cooking them some proper lunch. This place has an extremely arrogant and complacent attitude to their customers, needless to say - we would never go back.

Beware if you are ordering wine. No wine list. Little interest in sharing any information about the wine and a mediocre glass of white costs £12… apparently the clientele find it offensive to be told the price on enquiry! A wine list please would suit all your clientele!

Having visited this place many times before, we were disappointed that it had lost its buzz. Not once did we feel welcomed. The service was almost non existent. The food was ok, but not outstanding. We won’t be eating here again.

First visit for Sunday lunch. We both had roast beef which was great with extra side dish of red cabbage. A nice welcome and table in restaurant rather than bar area.

We dropped in for dinner on Monday night and received a warm welcome. In particular, the food exceeded our expectations. The sauce with the duck dish was particularly delicious, the potatoes cooked perfectly. Dessert and the stilton cheese plate were also excellent.

We were on a Narrowboat moored on the canal and were hungry and tired and then we found this lovely pub. We enjoyed our evening meal so much, we went back the following day for a Sunday roast. Friendly staff, efficient service, quaint thatched building, peaceful garden and a bloody good chef! We will be back.

Found this little gem hidden in the Berkshire countryside. Stopped off for lunch and received a warm friendly welcome from the staff. Wife is Gluten intolerant and we were pleased to see the menu catered well for this with several options. We both had the beer battered cod and chips. The food came out quick, hot and the batter was really crispy. Their only slight slip up is watch out for sarsons vinegar when you put it on a table as it contains Barley. All in all great food, lovely location, great staff. We'd go back when next out that way

Nice country pub restaurant. Lovely quaint building in a country lane. Good sized car park that's easy to access and park. Good range of beers and larger, including zero alcohol versions. We stopped for lunch on a Sunday, so the menu was just roasts or fish and chips. But we needed have worried. The roast beef and the roast pork were really nice. And Eaton Mess after completed the treat. All good, we'll be back again 😎👍👍👍

We had lunch there today. Hamburgers were great and staff were very pleasant.

Wow! What a fab place. Food was awesome. So much so that we ate there again the next night. It tasted delicious and was so well presented. Quick and friendly service. GF widely available. Fantastic surroundings! Stayed on a Britstop. The canal was just round the corner so we made good use of our bikes! Would definitely recommend!

We had a family occasion in the private dining room today and everything was lovely. The staff were very friendly and welcome, the choice of Sunday roast and drinks was great and as a venue it felt quite special. There were 16 of us so we had selected from the menu and ordered before the day - I chose a small rare roast beef and shared the cauliflower for 2 and pigs in blankets. The small roast was plenty - picture doesn’t show the additional side of seasonal vegetables. And we loved that we were given a whole gravy boat of extra gravy, not just what was on the plate. Now we have found The Red House we will definitely be back and highly recommend it to anyone.

Had a fantastic meal here and a lovely location not far off the K&A canal. Gluten-free fish and chips, for me being coeliac, it's a real treat. As for the Eton mess, well, what else is on a beautiful summers day.

This is a lovely pub with excellent food and service. The staff were even kind enough to help us find the home of a lost dog we had somehow picked up on our way home. Bonus points for that! Thank you, Frazer. We will come here again.

Great pub! They helped us out last minute for a group booking when we were let down at the last minute by the neighbouring pub (The Half Way Inn) who were absolutely terrible. If you’re in this area choose The Red House - far superior!

Excellent! a warm, very civilised welcome, and a superb lumch. The cheese souflee followed by the steak and kidney pie - with proper pieces of kidney in it!!!! We had an excellent lunch meal here - very highly recommended. Perfect, unrushed service

Only stopped in for half a cider, was pleasantly surprised to be offered a sample as the draft cider wasn't a common one. It was great. Pretty garden to sit in, got chillly so headed inside for a latte which was great too. May well pop back for food during the summer.

Have visited this pub/restaurant on many occasions and been more than satisfied with the food and service. Our latest visit was to celebrate a 92nd birthday although this was not made known. The quality of both food and service has declined. The service in particular was quite poor as regards both drinks and meals. Drinks were slow in arriving or didn’t arrive at all. It is customary and good manners that you all start eating at the same time. This is difficult if the last meal brought to the table is almost ten minutes late with no apologies given. The quality of food in terms of presentation and content has declined noticeably. We won’t be returning.

Consistently great quality food, the best steak and kidney pudding ive ever had. Fair prices and a warm atmosphere. The General Manager Jon is one of the stars of the show, extremely friendly, great memory for remembering if you’re a returning customer and what your preferences are etc.

Visited just before Mother’s Day. Unfortunately no food, but beer and company was good in nice surroundings with a friendly manager.

Lovely little country boozer with great beers close to the canal for visiting cruisers

We visited yesterday without advance booking and was gratefully accommodated in a perfect spot in the bar area with our pooch. Rare roast beef for all 3 of us, veg plentiful enjoyed by us all. The best roast I've had out in a while. Thank you. We haven't been to you for a while and we'll be back again soon.

Delicious food and warm welcome by the owner. Serving staff could have been a bit more proactive. Took a longer time than expected to place orders and the period between courses. Staff seemed young and not yet confident, so might be new and in training, so maybe needed supervision or maybe just not on point today. Still loved the ambience and food, though

We visited on a cold and frosty January Tuesday lunchtime to find the Bar and Restaurant really busy and full of traditional Pub atmosphere. A really warm welcome from the Landlord and superb food and service. Highly recommended.

12 of us booked in for our annual Xmas Dinner as we live in a variety of places around the country. We were greeted warmly by Holly who was to be our main host. She was lively and smiley which was what we wanted to...

We had a small wedding lunch there and found Jon very helpful and keen to make sure we had everything we wanted on the day. We had use of their separate dining room, our guests went home full, happy and impressed with the food so not much more we could ask for!

5 of us met for lunch on Monday 28th November and all enjoyed our choices from the Menu. All our lunches were delicious and the Bread & Butter pudding (for me) was to die for. Highly recommend.

Afraid I have to disagree with other reviewers, yes it is an attractive building, but the service and food we experienced on visiting 3 weeks ago were not as good as other similar establishments within 7 miles.

We’ve just visited the Red House and had their Fish & Chip Friday offer. It was delicious. Light batter and succulent fish. Definitely would recommend especially as it was £15 including a glass of wine!
