We ‘hired’ the private rooms at The Red House for the celebration of my father’s life, followed by a hot buffet. Aimee, the Events Manager, was wonderful throughout, the rooms were lovely and provided an ideal setting for our family gathering of 20, with capacity for more. The Red House is a step above your average pub and has a nice country setting. Highly recommended.

Pre booked food for family party. Very disappointed with over cooked roast potatoes then over microwaved to warm up. 8 chips? Fish nice but too much batter. Meat on roasts good. Limited pudding choices. Table too small, cramped. Will not be returning.

Love this pub. First went for drinks in the garden last summer and had such a warm welcome that we had to come back, eventually, for dinner. I loved it! 5* service, 5* food and a delicious bottle of Malbec. I had a venison pave and genuinely thought that it was one of the best meals I have ever had in a pub. This pub is so sweet, old and traditionally British. Tucked away in the countryside. It's perfect to me.

I’ve been a regular at The Red House for nearly a decade but this was the first time we had taken the family for Christmas Lunch. It was exactly what we needed - a relaxed and festive atmosphere, fabulous food, and attentive but not intrusive service. It was our second visit in December and the first was just as good. It’s a shame there aren’t more pubs like The Red House - a straightforward good quality country pub with no pretensions and no bland corporate stuff. Looking forward to our next visit.

Very poor food on Christmas Day. Extremely overpriced (even allowing for the costs of getting staff for Christmas Day), I just can’t work out how 3 courses and 3 canapés can come to £110!! Slow service from staff. Staff did not know what they were serving. Two bottles of wine were added to our bill, we did not have. I would avoid this place.

Fish & chips x 3. Well cooked but, seriously, it’s a bit mean to only give your customers 8 chips each. I don’t care if they are carefully weighed portions. We are hungry and want to feel full up when we leave. We did let them know our disappointment and they bought us out 2 extra chips each. This used to be our favourite pub. Our Narrowboat is moored at a local marina and we were so looking forward to our first trip out (due to high tides over the very rainy winter) to what was our favourite pub but what a terrible shame … “Cheap as chips” is a well known expression, so why be so stingy?!

My good friend and I went there for a fish and chip lunch today 21/2/24. The waitress was friendly and jovial , which I always like. The fish and chips came well presented, with mushy peas and tartar sauce. To be honest, after living in Brixham for 7 yrs , the home of fishing trawlers , I was just expecting the run of the mill fish covered in batter. Well, was I wrong, the batter was thin and nicely crispy, not oily at all, the fish was beautifully cooked, flakey and tasty. Just enough chunky chips to complement the meal. I fully recommend the red house for this , and several other great looking meals that went past us. Will return soon.

We chose to have our low-key wedding dinner here, and certainly believe we chose well. The food is good quality, and of a slightly higher yet reasonable price. A 3 course meal will cost you between 30 and 50 pounds. 10 meals of mostly 3 courses only set us back 320 ish pounds. Lovely staff and picturesque location, but could use some more vegetarian options.

Celebrated our Civil Partnership at The Red House yesterday and the whole experience was nothing short of perfect! The venue itself is a perfect country pub - thatched with a very homely atmosphere in the beautiful Berkshire countryside. We used the private dining room just off the main restaurant, which was absolutely ideal for our party of 10. The food was just amazing! We wanted our guests to choose their preferred dishes, rather than have have a one course fits all, which worked perfectly. The kitchen presented all the courses on time and piping hot and the comments from the guests were very complimentary. The service was second to none and we MUST reserve special praise for Maureen, who made sure our day was very special - Thank you Maureen! Recommend without reservation.

We visited here recently having eaten here countless times over the past few years, this time we wanted to try a Sunday lunch. Upon arrival we were absolutely horrified to discover that basically ‘Children are not welcome’ here on a Sunday. There is no Children’s menu in operation and when we enquired if they were able to make something off the regular Children’s menu as an exception the rude waiter said no - all that was possible was a half portion of an adult roast (which neither of my toddlers would eat). I asked for him to check this was definitely all that was possible as it seemed very inflexible ( especially as the place wasn’t even half full!) ; he asked the manager in front of us who abruptly shrugged and said no. The only suggestion being a ‘bowl of chips’. Dreadful. As we were there with other family members who were hungry we had to stay and eat their mediocre roast whilst my Children ate their greasy bowl of chips and then i had the joy of driving straight home and cooking them some proper lunch. This place has an extremely arrogant and complacent attitude to their customers, needless to say - we would never go back.

We had a family occasion in the private dining room today and everything was lovely. The staff were very friendly and welcome, the choice of Sunday roast and drinks was great and as a venue it felt quite special. There were 16 of us so we had selected from the menu and ordered before the day - I chose a small rare roast beef and shared the cauliflower for 2 and pigs in blankets. The small roast was plenty - picture doesn’t show the additional side of seasonal vegetables. And we loved that we were given a whole gravy boat of extra gravy, not just what was on the plate. Now we have found The Red House we will definitely be back and highly recommend it to anyone.

I was told about The Spotted Dog while working in Witney. I mentioned I was from Thatcham and I the person excitedly mentioned how great the Sunday Roast was and how they travel from Witney to have it. So tonight we made a visit and this will be somewhere we choose to go with friends and family when they visit. Service, food and portion size exceeded all expectations. It is a nice atmosphere and the food came out quick. Kev went the extra mile to make my little girl (3 years old) feel special making the dessert even more fun. I’m nervous selling this pub to much as I want to be able to get a table… but they deserve recognition.

Unfortunately our meal was not what we hoped. We came after a good recommendation about Sunday roasts. We booked a Saturday evening to celebrate a 21st birthday. We were bit tucked away but not out of sight but definitely feel forgotten about. The taps menus sounded great and we ordered from these for starters, one item was forgotten, though after being reminded it was brought out to the table. To be fair this was pretty nice other than the calamari was a bit of cardboard and the bravas potatoes were underwhelming. The mains were unfortunately the biggest let down, vegetarian burger was overcooked and very dry, the seasonal veg with the pie was just cabbage, the haddock, though portion wise was fantastic, just didn’t taste like haddock at all. We had to ask for a drink 3 times before we got it being, had to ask for cutlery for starters and mains as not enough on the table, the table was only partially cleared before our mains arrived and we were never offered any deserts or coffees. It’s a lovely venue and I’m sure in the summers is lovely outside but unfortunately outside of coming in for a drink we wouldn’t eat here again. The main meals are priced fairly but feel the tapas is over priced.

The staff were all very welcoming on a very busy evening. Unfortunately they had run out of the vegetarian main course, making it difficult to find an alternative. Limited choice for vegetarian on the menu. Service was quick
