We've been to the Queens Head quite a few times since moving to Guildford 2 years ago. We were amazed by the quality of food, good service and lovely atmosphere the first couple of times but something went wrong after that! We've tried it occasionally since but with mixed feelings...... however.... We went again in March to see how things were and were pleasantly surprised. The food was back to a good standard and service was good! We went for lunch on the 20th April and were wowed! The food was really good and service from Tierney was brilliant!!

After reading all the previous reviews - and the grovelling excuses and apologies maybe it’s time to turn the QH into a strip joint where you can’t really go terribly wrong! How can you so consistently do things so badly ? First rule of customer facing business - don’t explain - sort it out - and do it quickly and cheerfully. We don’t need to know that you’ve got a new menu you haven’t practiced even though you’ve been plugging it for ages/that chef’s run off with the milk maid; front of house staff are practising dominoes on pogo sticks. We don’t want or need excuses. You’ve been offering excuses for years - (in the previous Red Mist incarnation) and now as a Grosvenor Inn/ Pub - owners name conveniently omitted from the menu. Every single table in QH on our visit was complaining - waiting for 15 minutes for a drink is pathetic - the food took an age and when it did arrive was either cold/had components missing /or wasn’t what was ordered . Dirty glasses, dirty tables, grubby cutlery Staff attitude was awful - I never realised there was a school for sullen catering staff - there must be because all staff were well practiced in the attitude that told us that we were all a nuisance. I could go on but obviously you really don’t care - just take a chance that people pay up and shut up. I feel so desperately sad for the poor souls who have unwittingly booked for Easter weekend and Bank Holidays You claim to be 'Award Winning' and yet no one seems to know what these alleged awards are. Do tell. BTW - if I’m in there again and your front of house staff spray noxious chemicals on tables while I and other people are still eating I will not be held responsible for my actions. Further- to clean a table it first needs to cleared completely. How about trying a clean damp cloth for a change? I am so disappointed with the continued ineptitude at the Queen’s Head. Do better 1/10

First visit here for Sunday lunch and it exceeded my expectations considering some recent reviews. We arrived 20 mins ahead of our booking but we were made very welcome and fortunately our table was ready. The service was attentive and Lily, our main server, looked after us very well. Our Sunday roast was generous and delicious plus it made a change to have roast lamb on a pub menu. I felt the team were keen to ensure that we enjoyed our lunch which was nice and we certainly did.

I came with family for a Sunday lunch having been many times to this pub with usually good food. We were given the menus, ordered and brought drinks and then waitress came to take our orders. My brother enquired about one of the items in the speciality section and was told we don’t do any of these on Sunday - yet they were on the menu we were given and we were not told about this at the time. We decided to go for the roasts. We wanted lamb and beef cooked pink and asked the waitress if this was possible. She checked with the kitchen and told us neither could be cooked pink as it all comes the same. We were very surprised as many people nowadays prefer their meat cooked pink. So we all settled for the pork belly. The meat was ok but half of the crackling was hard and inedible, the Yorkshire pudding was overcooked and the roast potatoes undercooked. Unfortunately we won’t be rushing back.

Roast was beyond awful. ‘We know the roasts are a bit tired, we should tell people not to order them by the afternoon’, said three members of very sheepish looking staff. Potatoes harder than Danny Dyer. Thankfully, the team did kindly remove food from the bill (but that in itself says something!)

Have been a few times before and it has been okay. It's still a smartly decorated pub and still has the laughably pretentious menu. We four did find it rather challenging to settle on something to have for lunch. Even so, three of the four meals turned out to be quite good and were nicely presented. Mine was the lousy one! I chose the club sandwich which was probably one of the worst ones I have ever had. Not only was it meagrely filled but did not have all the advertised ingredients so was quite tasteless. I really should have sent it back in disgust. However, the service had been (and continued to be) so so slow we could well have been waiting for a replacement meal into the early evening. Our section had only three other tables occupied (albeit one of them quite large) and yet it took well over two and a half hours to get three wines, one beer, two starters, four mains and two deserts and two coffees. There were ample servers (who were all very nice but with not much to do) so maybe there was a very under staffed kitchen? It wasn't particularly good value either and I don't think I'll be returning. There are better dining establishments out there.

The Queens Head restaurant quite understandably receives mixed reviews. My wife and I called last Saturday (28th December) to book a table for the following day but after 5+ minutes of ringing out, we were invited to leave a message, which we did, including a request for a particular Table Number. A few hours later we got a call-back when the lady asked what time we would like and confirming it would be on our preferred table. Bearing in mind it was for a Sunday and in an attempt to be helpful, I said 'we can be flexible'. The lady proposed 2pm and again offered and confirmed that our requested table would be allocated to us. We arrived on time but were told that our requested table was not available because others were using it. No apology, even when I mentioned the member of staff who had called us to confirm our request. Our choice of Sunday Roast arrived within seconds of us ordering but without the roast potatoes. Wrongly, we assumed these would be brought to out table with a few moments but that was not the case and after 5-minutes we needed to attract the attention of a waitress who then brought them to us. The Roast Pork was adequate but our plates were dominated by the biggest Yorkshire Pudding you can imagine which, of course, made it look like we were getting a much bigger meal than we actually were. We had specifically requested 'Tap Water' which one expects to be free but it was only after we arrived home and looked closely at our bill, that we realised the Queen's Head had charged us £5.30 plus an 'automatic' (rather than optional) 10% Service Charge for the whole bill when, to be perfectly honest, we didn't think was deserved given the poor service we had received. I'm sure others diners will have also mentioned this but the pricing of wines at the Queen's Head are, to put it mildly, quite exorbitant. It's a PUB not an up-market restaurant. We hadn't been to the Queen's Head for some time and definitely won't be going again, preferring instead to frequent some of our other local, value-for-money, excellent restaurants.

Very poor experience. Order forgotten and took an hour from ordering for our starter to arrive. French Onion Soup small, lacking onions(!), and miniscule piece of burnt bread on top. Burger lacked flavour and was pretty dry. Ordered with cheese (not melted) and bacon (largely fat). Real shame as have had good meals there in the past but will now be avoiding.

We chose the Queen's Head for our Christmas Day lunch on 25th December with close family (first time we have ever eaten out on Christmas Day!). As such we were hoping for a meal to remember and we were not disappointed! Every one of the six courses was perfectly executed, elevated classic Christmas fare of generous proportions, and the service was paced perfectly for a leisurely family celebration. Tea, Tyler and team were cheery, warm, attentive and professional, and handled the day admirably. We are very grateful to those who forego their own time with family at Christmas time to provide their customers with a special and memorable experience.

Shockingly bad food. When paying £24 for a rump you'd expect something half decent. What I got was one of the worst steaks I've ever had. Overcooked and sliced into three random pieces, the texture resembled an old leather boot. Even the decorative rocket looked wilted and sad. Pre-ordered the Bernaise yet ended up with peppercorn. Another person was simply given a pot of oil. The only silver lining were the fries. As for the turkey, it wouldn't be drier if they left it cooking in the oven until next Christmas. AVOID.

We have visited the queens head many times before a few years ago and their roasts were amazing. We have a young family and rarely get to eat out so as a special family treat we decided to visit today. The restaurant still looks great. It is not especially child friendly - no colouring or children’s cutlery. The food - we ordered 3 adult roast lunches all with different meats which were all far below expectations. The gravy and vegetables were very average. The meats varied from ok to inedible. The roast potatoes were honestly the worst I have ever eaten - I don’t even know how they were so bad. Felt like reheated from the day before and left to go hard. Completely inedible. How they felt it was ok to serve them is beyond me. The Yorkshire pudding was lovely and the kids food was average. The waitress asked how the food was and I told her the roast potatoes were terrible and she didn’t offer any apology or really care. We received the bill without any reduction and a non optional service. We decided not to pay service as the food was well below par for a £110 dinner for 3 adults and 2 little children. We were then followed to our car asking for the service payment which I explained I wouldn’t be paying as the food was not good. I’m actually shocked at this behaviour and they have now lost our custom. Such a shame as was a real favourite years ago.

Very disappointing. Firstly, 3 of us got our drinks rather quickly and the other 3 waited for ever. Secondly, ordered various Sunday roasts, 4 beef, 1 pork…..you could barely find the pork on the plate. 1 Lamb…..ran out of mint sauce. Perhaps be honest and let your guest know before ordering what sauces you have available. Manager blaming the previous Manger in the day for running out of everything.

Hmm, where do I start? The good bits: friendly service, nice décor. Mediocre bits: food VERY mixed. Could do better: atmosphere. Read on…… We were a mixed group of seven, including some Italian friends who wished to experience an English pub dinner. To be fair I’ve not been to the Queen‘s Head for a couple of years but despite the lovely website, the pub appears rundown with chipped paint and peeling wallpaper. Three of the main courses were not available and it seemed to me the menu was mixed grill/steak/burger heavy. One of our party ordered haddock ‘Arnold Bennett’ – it was too cheese heavy and one of our party burnt their hand on the serving dish since nobody explained it was as hot as a freshly forged horseshoe! The venison was pleasant open (but cold) - it had been cooked almost ‘blue’ and was practically walking off the plate - the accompanying mash was cold and the ‘greens’ was a laughable roll of one - change that – half a Savoy cabbage leaf. One of our Italian friends ordered risotto – probably a mistake as it was a) a starter size portion served as main course and B) not quite as you might find it in Italy!! Because the items we wanted to order it weren’t available some of our party ended up ordering chicken burgers – not quite what they had in mind when they first looked at the menu! Puddings again were hit and miss. A portion of ice cream turned out to be one scoop (!), they only had two trifles left and apple crumble was served with the most pitiful amount of custard. Sticky toffee pudding had evidently been microwaved – mine in particular was on the chewy side and the sauce on the side was thick and over-cooked. On the plus side, the recommended wine was very nice and as I have said earlier, service was friendly albeit a bit slow. We had been seated in one of the side rooms which we had requested since we wanted a quiet table – the room is nice and decorated with hunting print wallpaper and matching curtains - what let it down was a woodburning stove that hadn’t been lit with a pile of rubbish next to it – hardly the welcoming and homely atmosphere we were hoping for. For people sitting on one side of the table our view was the pile of rubbish and the unlit wood burner and beside it an alcove stacked high with highchairs. Just a small tweak –light the wood burner and cover up the highchairs with a curtain – this would have made such a difference to the atmosphere and ambience. I understand the things on the menu being in short supply – we didn’t eat until 8 pm and as I said to the party, it shows that everything is freshly cooked and not from Brake Brothers! However, management need to sort out a few tweaks and hopefully it will be back on his feet again.

The Queen's Head – A Hidden Gem I recently had the pleasure of attending a food tasting night at The Queen's Head, and it was an unforgettable experience. From the moment I stepped inside, I was greeted with a warm and welcoming atmosphere that immediately set the tone for the evening. The pub itself has a cozy, charming vibe that makes you feel at home right away—whether you're popping in for a casual drink or, like me, treating yourself to some fantastic food. Speaking of the food—wow! Every dish served during the tasting was an absolute delight. The flavors were fresh and beautifully balanced, with each course showing off the kitchen's creativity and skill. The attention to detail in both the presentation and taste was truly impressive. Whether you're a fan of hearty pub classics or looking to try something a little more gourmet, The Queen's Head does not disappoint. You can tell the team here takes real pride in their menu. The staff were equally outstanding, providing attentive and friendly service throughout the night. They were knowledgeable about the food and clearly passionate about ensuring each guest had a great experience. It's rare to find a place where both the food and the service are top-notch, but The Queen’s Head nails it. The entire evening had a lively, vibrant feel to it, with a buzz of happy diners and a genuinely fun atmosphere. It's the kind of place where you can relax and enjoy a great meal, knowing you're in capable hands. Whether it's for a special event like the tasting night or just a casual visit, The Queen's Head is one pub that definitely deserves to be on your must-visit list. Highly recommended!

Terrible meal and experience Queens Head in Clandon. I provided feedback on the Red Mist website but never heard back from them re our poor experience on Friday 6 September (booking reference: DMN-16873366822). Learnt that the original Directors had sold the business (no repsonse from the new owners either) Slow service. It was steak night - never seen a steak so small for £25.00! The green pepper sauce was inedible (thick and gloopy). No option of the rib eye available as I fancied the chimichuri (it was steak night). My wife's starter of jumbo prawn cocktail had one large prawn and the rest very small and tasteless. Very poor presentation. The trout main was so small and the whole plate was covered in the yogurt dressing (no room for anything else and poorly presented). My wife dropped an earring - I have never seen such dirty floors when we searched for it. The radiator had food stuff plastered on it. Normally have dessert and coffee but left due to this experience. Absolutely not worth the £110.00 we paid. Looking at the recent reviews you have a serious issues here. The food was average and did not live up to expectations. The service was very slow and overall lacked attention to detail. Two menu items chosen by our group of six were not available but we weren't told before ordering. With one of the starters, we were told it was unavailable only after they'd brought our other starters to the table. We waited nearly 45 minutes after our starters being cleared before they brought our mains, which is too long to wait. My tea was served with a dirty cup. All of the water glasses need replacing as they're all cloudy from the dishwasher. The staff waiting the table asked how everything was and as I started to explain some of the problems with the food they walked off, showing no concern for the customer's opinion. This pub will not improve if they don't stop to listen to feedback. Overall, a very disappointing visit and one to avoid in future.

Both of the small plates that we ordered were very tasty. Service is prompt and polite though garden orders must be placed at the bar. Great wines by the glass.

Absolutely outstanding high end pub in the Surrey Hills. The food was absolutely outstanding, the outdoor seating area really open and lovely and the staff super attentive. Our first visit but we are already planning our next.

We came for an impromptu lunch on 7th May. The waiter was very nice, but the food was mediocre and of very small portions for the price.

We booked a table for 7 on the Sunday of May BH weekend. When we arrived were told the table wasn't quite ready and would we like to order a drink at the bar, we were expecting a 5 to 10 minute wait. We were actually left waiting 45 minutes for our table, no one offered any explanation and when we asked were just told the previous booking were still there. We asked for menus so we could order and eventually had to ask the staff to ask the previous booking to leave - although even then the staff just gave them the bill . They did apologise for the wait and the food and service were fine but not worth waiting 45 minutes for considering we had booked the table a week ago. Would not return again or recommend.

We arrived here by accident on a Friday evening having failed to get a table at the Gomshall Mill (full) and White Horse Shere (closed for food by 8pm). What a stroke of luck! The food was nothing short of spectacular, with many interesting dishes that make a nice change from the usual pub choice and more in line with Guildford's top end restaurants. The spicy Thai pork was delicious, and my wife loved her steak with pepper sauce (which included a glass of red). Service was spot on, well done to all the team at the Queens Head. I have never felt the need to review anything before on line but this was such a surprise we had to say something!

Very disappointing as it was a birthday celebration. No acknowledgement. Poor service, no consideration for allergies. Got the order wrong with the wine and argued it was correct!!. Food cold, tasteless and pricey. Replaced asparagus at the height if season with broccoli. Without price reduction. Waited ages for water!. And service charge was added without a choice. WILL NOT EAT THERE AGAIN. Will be calling the restaurant. When it opens.

Staff seem to be more interested chatting by the bar rather than clearing tables or attending to customers waiting for food etc. We had to ask for someone to come and take our order having sat outside waiting for what seemed like ages. The food is nice when it arrives, the deserts are very tasty especially the Cherry Ripple Sundae

Went for Easter Sunday lunch with family. Table not ready when we arrived but no problem, we were seated 15 mins later with apologies. My four year old had chips and fish goujons (overpriced in my opinion) and we all had roasts. Beef sirloin was really nice but a compliments were not great and overall we came away a little underwhelmed. Would be come back, yes if the food was better. Lovely pub.

The roast lamb was “ the toughest I’ve ever eaten”’ said one of my party. I also had the lamb as the sirloin of beef was off, and can’t disagree. On paying the waiter acknowledged that other people had said the same. Not to mention that the waitress smashed a glass of wine all over the table and my jeans, after clearing the mess they just replaced the one glass.

Booked up for an early sitting 6.00pm . Took my 80 year old mum for Sunday roast treat , 10 mins after we sat down the waiter comes over and said all the roasts have gone now including all roast potatoes. My mum was so looking forward to a nice Sunday roast and this pub failed. We left the place and found a lovely place just down the road .avoid this place if you don't want to be disappointed

Had the unfortunate experience today. we were a party of 3, 2 of us had the fish and chips. Which re regretted the nicest part was the chips, the fish was almost cremated and not edible.

Nice food . Dirty table we were told wasn't ready then it was . Only fault was they don't tell you food doesn't come with any veg . If we hadn't thought to ask we would have been very disappointed when food arrived. Apart from that ok .

The best roast dinner this year, Every bit tasty, plates could be hotter in my opinion, We sat at the bar and ordered our food at said bar. I thought adding a service charge was a bit steep, We had to get our own cutlery and we got our drinks from the bar. We had no service at this point. We let it slide, the food was amazing, roast belly of pork and the vege wellington, -the confit new potatoes, maybe they ran out. The bar area seemed to be the meeting/gossip point for the staff, we were in ear shot of some fruity conversations. I'm just picking holes here, New favourite place to eat, will definitely return and boom a table this time.

The pub has changed hands and the new owners haven't got a grip it needs to be put into special measures. The food is bang average smacked to me of cheap ingredients the pub on a January evening relied on an open log fire and central heating off and so it was very cold also the restraunts was grubby and tired not helped by the dust trails clearly visible in the curtains. We will wait for the reviews to improve greatly before we spend another £100 on a 2 two course meals for two which inc a £28 bottle wine. Sorry I hate leaving poor reviews but my experience compiled me,

We went to meet friends for lunch. It was necessary to wait to be seated even though our friends already had a table. This isn’t really what I expect for a country pub. There was no significant bar area where you were able to just have a drink and all the tables were laid out with place settings for eating. The staff were friendly enough although the service was very slow. The food was acceptable but not great. The place was busy and the background noise was overpowering which whilst I appreciate couldn’t be helped but we did have to leave earlier than we wanted as it was impossible to have a conversation.

Disappointed with this pub as it used to be very good. Brunch menu was very limited and expensive. Two items were off the menu. Mum's was cold which she got the money back for. How can a pub have no ham left on a busy Saturday. Useless menu as we would have liked pie and not breakfast food!!! A tip for the manager. Buy a ham hock. Cook it then you will have enough for the week. We will not be returning!!!

I came in on two occasions once with my friend for a coffee, channel was lovely and polite. The other staff didn’t seem bothered to greet us. On the second occasion I came in for a night cap with my partner after going to the long bar where myles and Daizy greeted us with a warm and friendly smile even the door security what fun. Beth in Harbar was absolutely fantastic, warm, welcoming and very friendly with a great sense of humour. The bartenders weren’t overly dynamic unlike the rest of the team we dealt with. Great place to go, shame some staff let it down. The people mentioned surely made up for this. So will definitely come back.

The cafe is inside the Baker and Stonehouse store in Guildford. The staff are friendly, food is delicious and there's a really nice atmosphere. Just be careful not to sit at the store furniture displays by accident...!
