Marvelous pub full of interest inside. Really warm and welcoming feel, took me back a bit. Lovely little garden and a great outside room too. Beer superb, particularly the HSB. Can't wait to return.

Night out with the lads. Good stop for a friendly atmosphere and good beer. Staff were efficient and welcoming. I'll stop here again.

Terribly cliquey run by an old gal who just let's her acid queen bar boys swear at the punters. Shame because it could be a good pub but is run by a gaggle of friends of the management who don't like anyone outside their group.

Hot pork scratching and Tim Taylor on tap. So easy, but so rare.

This is a great pub. Loads of interesting photos and artefacts to look at on the walls, especially posters from the theatre nearby. Friendly bar staff and locals. Lovely garden when the weather is good. Our favourite pub in Southsea.

Excellent pub with cask ales. Squeeze your way past the friendly locals at the bar and enjoy a drink in the fabulously quirky beer garden. Not on the main drag but worth going out of your way to get to it.

Great staff and friendly atmosphere with the punters

Quirky is a word often used to describe this pub and it sums it up well. There are several "nooks and crannies" plus an almost tropical garden. The walls are adorned with actors who have visited after performing at nearby Kings Theatre. Our visits may be years apart but its always busy and welcoming.

This pub situated just off Albert Road in Southsea is a little gem. It doesn't do food but I did have a bowl of hot pork scratchings . The outside area is something else. Just an oasis of plants , lanterns and quirky artefacts. The little covered area is divine. Pub mirrors and Chesterfields and old books. So friendly and welcoming.

One of the last true eccentric pubs around, absolutely unique in Southsea and always a friendly welcome.

My favourite place for a drink in Portsmouth. Down to earth feel about it, unique experience each time I go. I feel this is one of the last remaining pubs with a great atmosphere that doesn’t require slot machines or excessive amounts of sport screens. You feel greeted by the owners/staff and they treat you well, even if you’re not a weekly local. Loved coming here with family or good friends, especially liked what they did to light up the garden with a luminous glow of fairy lights and nature, to accompany the ubiquitous British pub.

Popped into this lovely little pub after a venue at the theatre it was cosy friendly nice to see people playing board games, Jenga , lovely relaxed atmosphere

If you think you'll find a bird flying from the flames you will be disappointed. But if a great local vibe burning with hospitality is your thing then yes!

This place has got the perfect atmosphere. Even though I'm not much of a drinker, I swing by now and then since I live just around the corner. Let me tell you, it's always a good time. The folks there make me feel super welcome, and I've had a blast meeting new people and getting in on conversations and games. Seriously, this spot never disappoints, and I've made some sweet memories there.

Well priced, friendly bar staff and a very nice garden to sit in that even has games. The only thing I dislike about this pub is the window that's looking straight from the garden in to the men's toilets.

What a great British pub !! Lovers of fine ales, fabulous atmosphere, antique and vintage decor will love this place hidden away just behind the King’s Theatre ….and it is hosted by the most wonderful landlady Kathy who does enormous amounts locally for the community and charities….. look out for the cow ( and soon to be sheep) on the roof !! 10/10

A proper traditional pub that on most weekends will be a struggle for space. Could do with a better and more varied selection of ales.

Great selection of beers and lagers. Pompey Pluckers sing and play their ukuleles on a Monday night, you can listen to them in the garden.

Superb pub with great staff, a good range of drinks, and plenty of space inside and out for everybody. Local to the Kings Theatre, so a good place to call in either on the way there, on the way back..... or even both!!

A fantastic local pub behind the king's theatre. Friendly staff, lots of regulars. Had a great evening with visiting family who loved it for a pre Christmas get together.

Omg who would believe it this pike was caught at southparade pier in 1937 by the lord mayor Daly which is now in this fantastic location of where the stars of the world's best theatre of dreams the king's come to wind down and relax only way to find out if this is true visit the phoenix and be served by fantastic staff which is the same as the royal Albert (halls) and the fifth hants volunteer arms and also the LJR team work makes the dream work merry Christmas to all the staff all the community god bless I think that you may see the batman soon xx

Wow what an interesting place very friendly staff, lovely and clean and all the photos and memorabilia around, I loved the ladies toilets ,my granddaughters loved the Emu and flamingo heads ,every where you looked there were things to see fantastic

Very quirky pub, popular with actors that are appearing at the Kings Theatre. Walls are covered with signed photos and theatre fliers, going back decades. Small garden area with function area as well.

Small friendly environment and the landlady organises events to raise funds for local charities and is a great supporter of War veterans. The Jubilee party was a huge success, despite the bad weather and everyone enjoyed themselves.

Great pub with a good atmosphere. Prices are relatively standard for Southsea now, maybe slightly on the pricier end. Pretty cramped inside but the decor is nice and the service is still pretty quick - although the bar is very short.

Such a welcoming & friendly, traditional english pub. It is cosy with a lovely outside area which the team spend a lot of time ensuring its quirky & comfy. Definitely one to recommend - in fact I have already!

Stumbled across this amazing pub inside and out. Great little snooks and garden - the bar full of memories and local nostalgia - quirky and original at the same time. Like an exaggeration of an old time boozer - locals chattering utter nonsense in the garden where the cackle of laughter and chink of glasses gives it a homely and fun vibe

Great little pub just off the main strip, very kind and friendly staff and owner, lovely to chat with them and offer good recommendations for drinks. The perfect place to meet before or a place to go after a trip to the king's theatre. You may be lucky and bump into the actors/actresses after they have performed! It has a large array of drinks on tap and in spirits at one of the cheapest prices in Portsmouth, especially an amazing selection of Rums, they say about 40 and I'll give it my best to try each one lol There's also a large beer garden which is great in summer and also some heaters in the winter for the smokers. It's great having a cider during the summer. There's dart boards and some game machines, there's also some interesting local historical artifacts that you can spot too

Smaller pubs tend to be much more friendly and The Phoenix is no exception, much more in keeping with pubs of the past, Kath the Landlord knows how to get the ingredients right for a decent pub. Recent refurb and plenty of work to allow seating in the garden and lounge bar has proven a good move. Ale on offer for me was HSB, well kept and pleasant. Double gin and pint of beer £9. Juke box well fed by local Gary who played a good mixture of 50s 70s and 80s. For a Sunday, it was busy. Check this one out.

The Phoenix is something of a Pompey institution. A quality, old-school boozer with excellent atmosphere, a stone's throw from Albert Road and the Kings Theatre (see misc notes & headshots on the walls), regularly full of locals but welcoming visitors. They've got a decent selection of beers, ciders, wines & spirits but a less impressive selection of food, that appeared to consist of jars of cockles &/or whelks or McCoy's crisps on my last visit! Fortunately, we'd eaten before we got there, and the jukebox was free, so we had a great time 😀
