Second oldest pub in Portsmouth and it is the highlight of the place. Breakfast was good and plentiful. The room is small with wonky electricity and plumbing, but I guess one must expect that in a 300 year old building. The wifi works well. Staff are businesslike. I wouldnt stay here again, but I'm glad I had the experience.

I was enjoying the very pleasant bar, so I decided to stay. Excellent decision, and luckily they had a room. Lovely historic building, more character than a font store, and the room I had was delightful... roomy and bright, good bed, and a very generous hot drinks selection. Instant hot water, not the ysual old-property half-hour wait. The bar is vibrant and free of electronics. The bar staff and the locals were welcoming and engaging. The menu was excellent pub-grub, tasty and generous. Breakfast was a paradigm, and it came with cheer and smiles. Prices for the room, foid and bar all seemed very fair Really couldn't fault the place. Oh, and it is 3 minutes walk from the Historic Dockyard gate One if the easiest 5-stars I've ever given.

We popped in for an evening meal on our last night in Portsmouth. Although it looks like a totally normal, old-style pub, the food really was excellent, the landlady and her staff really welcoming and the customers genuinely friendly and good company. An unexpected gem.

We chose the George Hotel due to its proximity to the Naval Dockyards. Little did we know how quaint and historical it was on its own. They hae 10 rooms and we were lucky enough to have a top floor room that had such character. However, the staircases are very narrow so getting a suitcase up them can be a challenge. We stayed for two nights and at breakfast and dinner there both nights. We enjoyed the fresh but traditional British fare. The chef is ex-Army and he knew how to cook and bake. The pub which is attached was also great and the staff was very attentive and kind. No request was too much or bothersome. Super fun find!

We arrived for a family lunch to celebrate a birthday but left feeling we had visited Fawlty Towers. Ushered in to a bar with very few seats and a number of beers being unavailable we had a drink before heading in to the conservatory where our table was waiting. The waiter who greeted us was hardly able to raise a murmur of welcome and quickly handed out paper menus. No mention of menu options. I ordered wine and without checking it was poured out, it really could have been any bottle! Only when we had had our starters did we realise other diners had chosen different meals! Service was a shambles with plates left on the table as deserts were being served. It's a lovely hotel with great setting but the service is really really poor. Food, from the menu option we were offered, was adequate but nothing more. I complained at the time and although the hotel had our details from our booking and had called to confirm the booking no one was bothered to follow up. Shoody service needs to be addressed.

I booked online, had a couple of questions and got answers to my email very quickly. The hotel is ideally located for the Historic Dockyard and all its attractions, a mere 150 metres from the gate. To be honest, the room we had was ok, could be improved, but that's being really critical. The bar has a good selection of real beers, but the resteraunt is really the best asset. The food is great, and plenty of it too! Could not fault it for quality or quantity! To top it off , all the staff are brilliant , nothing too much trouble, ready to help at any time. I was slightly ill during our stay, and the staff could not have been more helpful or attentive. I really enjoyed our stay and will stay again if or when we return. Great place.

We'd walked by this place a couple of times earlier in the day, and I'm so glad we remembered to go back and try it for supper. It has a small, old-fashioned (in a good way) restaurant. The staff was very helpful and friendly. Judging from conversations around us, they have many repeat guests. The menu offered a wide range of interesting homemade food. My husband had chicken with mushrooms and Pernod, which he found very different and good. I went with a curry and enjoyed it very much. We would definitely return here if we were ever in the area.

We had a dinner here as well as two breakfasts that were included in the cost of our room. The food was good, basic food in ample quantities but people looking for the gourmet experience should go elsewhere. Four of us stumbled in on a wet, cold Wednesday night without a reservation. No problem, we were immediately seated, our drinks orders taken, drinks provided, food orders taken, food served, dessert added ... great! It wasn't a memorable foodie feast, but everyone ate and drank happily -- literally, the only complaint was my tasty lamb dish was so hot that I couldn't start eating 'til everyone else was finished. (However, that let me talk a lot for a while, so no problem!) I'd go back again without a second thought.

Stayed one night. The weather had been warm but most areas in the hotel were well ventilated. Our room however was so hot and stuffy despite 2 fans going all night and the window wide open all. I think the room may have been above the kitchen hence why the heat was so extreme. We have stayed in various different bed and breakfasts and hotels in the U.K.and abroad and we have never been in a room so uncomfortably hot. Needless to say we didn't get any sleep at all. Other than that everything else was fine. The staff were all very friendly and the breakfast was lovely. Would stay again but would ask not to be put in room 4.

This modest restaurant is nestled next to a classic pub frequented largely by locals, so you may be tempted to give it a pass. Once Sarah gives you a smile and a menu, you'll be glad you stayed. The fare features common items uncommonly well prepared: their soup was rich and satisfying, and the curry well sauced and flavored. Is it really possible to have great fish 'n' chips anywhere in 2016? Yup. Marvelous light batter on the fish, and fries you will tell your friends back home about. Full bar with mezza-mezza wines.

Walked past while in Portsmouth Harbour on business and gave it a go. The dining room and pub were adjacent to one another in this classic old building that has been well maintained. Clean and tidy inside with low ceilings, pleasant lighting, and an inviting staff. The menu offered a number of comfort food options. I gravitated to the fish-n-chips and was not disappointed. The cod was flaky and moist with a batter that was well-prepared and not overwhelming to the fish. The chips were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. May go back tonight to try something different.

First impressions are, from the outside, possibly a bit shabby - not in the nicest area of the city but don't let looks deceive you. We wandered inside to a quaint little pub with a restaurant to the side of it. Food was great. Portion sizes were excellent and the waitress was lovely - friendly and we had a laugh. We had three courses, but really shouldn't have had the pudding as we were all full. A real cosy pub with a pleasant Victorian feel to it. The staff are really friendly and nothing is too much trouble. The food was cooked to perfection and it was all homemade good home cooking, cooked fresh to order. There was no steak sauces on the menu but when asked if it was possible for a sauce to be made the waitress made it happened and Reg chef knocked up a wonderful Stimson sauce. All the food was reasonably priced and the plates came full. I would highly recommend this place to anyone. The food is excellent and the service is second to none. Excellent evening.

The owner is delightful and showed me a box full of historical information about the pub. It is the oldest one still operating. There is a list of over 60 pubs in the area when it was a port full of sailing ships. When they renovated they pulled up the floor and found a fully functional well which is now a feature.

I must remember never to go back to this place again. We’ve been before and had an enjoyable experience, but the last few times have been dreadful. We’ve walked in and sat at a vacant table, only to be shepherded back to the door rudely. Then the host then led us back to the same table. Very unnecessary. On our latest visit I ordered a Pina Colada. When it arrived I had a couple of sips and really didn’t like it. It was not creamy at all and just taste of really sweet syrup. I took it back, she offered to remake, but I didn’t another one. When my husband paid the bill they refused to remove my drink. I have never know such bad customer service over a £10 cocktail. They have lost a customer.

Never been met by people in a small business so annoyed to receive custom, tutted and huffed as I entered the shop, yes it was 14:45 and the shop closed at 15:00 but that’s no excuse. I ordered 2 rolls, once the filling was in the roll I stated which salad I would like in each and was told there was no salad left?? No discount offered and to make matters worse when opening the rolls outside the shop the fillings were incorrect. Another customer entered the shop behind me the staff members both rolled their eyes and gave him a dirty look, if you don’t want to be selling products until you close maybe worth advising a cut off time for rolls and food to be made. The filling in the rolls was a good portion and tasted good but wasn’t what I ordered. I won’t be returning
