Something has changed at The March Hare, we have been many times but were hugely disappointed in our visit last night. Having previously enjoyed food it’s clear it’s now all about profit as it’s very small food portions and huge prices. I had the steak pie for main, at nearly £20 it’s already expensive for a pie with mash and veg. What arrived was more like a starter size pie, no more than 9cm in diameter, with about 6 green beans as the veg. Another member of our family ordered ravioli and got 5 pieces for £17 and at £35 for a steak and sauce there was very little on the plate. This used to be our destination to bring friends and family to in Guildford but I would no longer recommend it and from looking at other reviews it seems my experience is not unusual. A real shame

This was my first visit to The March Hare and my friend and I really enjoyed the experience. A very buzzy place with a great atmosphere which hit us as soon as we walked in. It was full to bursting so I'm so glad we booked a table ahead of time for our lunch. In spite of being super busy, we had great service and didn't have to wait long for our food to be served which was piping hot. Will definitely go there again when we next visit Guildford but be warned, always book ahead, particularly if you want a table in the evening so I'm told.

I had only visited on one previous occasion, 2 years ago, just for a beer in the small section at the door. I had liked the ambiance, so suggested a visit to try the restaurant. I was expecting a decent experience, but was pleasantly surprised by how much better The March Hare delivered against my expectations. We had a 7.30 booking and the large lower restaurant level was buzzing. We were offered a choice of tables - always nice - and then our personable waiter came to the table to assist with answers to our menu-based enquiries. I had the Morteau Sausage Salad to start, and the Pan-fried Chicken Supreme for main course. I felt that the portions were generous, and was particularly impressed with the flavours delivered on the main course plate. The chicken was cooked to perfection, and somehow the chef had infused it with subtle flavours that are so tricky with chicken. All of the accompaniments were perfectly matched, with special credit going to the chicken crackling. The first time I’ve had it, and it was well worth the wait. My partner had the duck, and it was plenteous and perfectly cooked too; too good to share, she said. Splitting hairs, the only negative was that we had to chase the drinks order when our first course was brought to the table. Otherwise, the perfect dining experience, and really not expensive for the quality of service and food. I rarely award 5 stars, but would happily award 4.5 if TripAdvisor would allow.

Cold room 16:00 Friday afternoon and we were the only people in the uncomfortably cold restaurant. After 5 mins we decided to leave and the manager? said they would turn the heater above us on, which did start to warm us so we stayed. Tepid wine The white wine was not very cold. This is not unusual in here which is why I ordered a cheap(er) bottle that I didn't mind putting ice in. The 2nd manager? wanted to replace it but I explained I had expected this and they sent some ice over. Very cold burger Following very nice starters my burger arrived from the water bath (yes very strange but I knew and chose it regardless). It had a spherical lump of unmelted gorgonzola on top which I spread over it. I cut it in half and it was completely (and I mean completely) cold. I tried to eat it but no way. That was the final straw so I asked for the bill, refusing the (correct) offer of a redone burger. The 1st manager then suggested that we were somehow incorrect in deciding we had had enough and they had "accommodated" us. If they are going to respond to this review I'd love to know how. Heating up your cold room for your paying customers? Providing ice for warm wine? Or offering to remake inedible food that should never had left the kitchen? For transparency they removed the food from the bill. We left half a bottle of tepid wine. Never going back.

We visited as part of a wedding reception where all our food was pre-ordered. We arrived early and I must say despite the pub already being busy, they handled the influx of guests well. Managed to break away from the main group and find a table in the corner of the pub until the upstairs room was free for the wedding party to take their seats. The food was really good. I had the goat cheese and leek tart to start, followed by the halloumi burger (EXCELLENT chips) and the sticky toffee pudding for dessert but I must say the absolute star of the evening was Gabriella. What a woman! Extremely friendly, attentive service making sure everyone's glasses were topped up and remembering what your order was if it was outside of the wine offering. Couldn't ask for more. Overall a very enjoyable experience and I would be keen to visit again if I were in the area.

An impromptu meal between two meetings ! What an absolute find. The service was seriously fabulous. We were accommodated without a reservation even though it appeared to have no room in the Inn, but the manager jiggled things around knowing we had only an hour and found a table for two in a little corner assuring us our food would be with us very quickly. ( it was very quick) Our waitress was superb without being on top of us all the time. Well the restaurant was so busy it would have been impossible to be too attentive although she kept a keen eye on all her service area. I felt like it was a modern carvery as you could have a top up of any veg gravy etc Generous servings , and tasty ! But with super service and food not being grappled by the other customers. You get what you pay for, it was great food, superb service and a buzzing atmosphere! Will definitely be going back and it’s not even near home Thank you for accommodating two hungry visitors x

I've been eyeing The March Hare every time I visited Guildford Castle. I live near the town centre, so I do that a lot. I finally gave it a try when my Australian friend came to visit me. She wanted the experience of a proper British pub lunch, and honestly, this place delivered. The moment we walked in, the warm, cosy vibe was the first thing that hit us. It’s the kind of spot that makes you feel right at home and ready to settle in for a nice, leisurely meal. But the real standout? The staff. They were just so friendly and welcoming—it made the experience even better. At first, I ordered the French onion soup, not realising it had a bit of alcohol in it. I took my first spoonful and felt something was off, so I asked the staff about it when they came by to check on us. They immediately double-checked with the chef and confirmed it for me. What impressed me was how quickly they offered to replace the dish with something else, which they did—it felt like they genuinely cared. The food overall was delicious and hit the mark for that British pub experience my Aussie friend was looking for. She ordered the duck, which she absolutely loved. The menu had a good mix of classic pub dishes and some fancier choices, so there’s something for everyone. One thing to keep in mind: if you’re someone who doesn’t drink, it’s worth asking about alcohol in the dishes, as it’s not always clear from the menu. All in all, The March Hare offers two floors for a memorable dining experience is a fantastic spot for a relaxed lunch or dinner. With its cosy atmosphere—especially during warm weather if you’re sitting in the conservatory with its open doors looking out onto the castle—the lovely staff, and great food, it’s definitely worth a visit.

We went as party of six for Christmas lunch. The pub was very noisy and crowded. They had obviously decided to cram as many tables in as possible. The problem was that the rest of the operation couldn't cope with that many customers. The service was brusque to the point of being rude - constantly interrupting. The food was expensive and arrived very late - 4 meals eventually arrived and after waiting 10 minutes we had to ask where were the others. We've eaten at Cote, or the Ivy, or the Thai restaurant up the hill. All nearby, much more civilised, and better value.

I try to avoid Sunday roasts at pubs, as they tend to be quite a let down. I was invited to the March Hare for a roast by people who I know feel the same way as me, as they had told me that the March Hare was a cut above the rest, and they were not wrong :) Aside from my preference for a little more moisture in the potatoes, the chicken roast was spot-on! Delicious meat, veg that was cooked properly, and a really good yorkshire pudding. On top of that, you can get more potatoes and veg free of charge! I had a crumble with custard for dessert, and this was very tasty too. The service was extremely professional but friendly. The bar drinks cost seemed to be very high. The place claims to be dog friendly but the way they pack people in you could not have a dog with you. A two course meal with half a bottle of wine was £74 for the two of us and we had the vegetarian meal which tends to be cheaper. We asked the waiter to break up the bill ( it was a group of 14) so that we could pay for what we had ordered but he either didn't want to or couldn't so payment was a mess with some people paying too much and others much too little which was very frustrating. Had a great meal here last night….the pork was excellent! Super friendly and efficient staff on both the bar and in the restaurant and a great atmosphere.

The food was absolutely sublime and the service incredible. We were served by the French waiter (can't recall his name, sincere apologies, the wine was flowing!), he was wonderful. The food...my goodness... Just incredible!

Booked table for birthday Roast. Lovely friendly welcome. Shown to our table and superbly attended to by the amazing Gabrielle, who made our visit a wonderful treat. Food was excellent, served really quickly. Great desserts, including the cheesecake which we sampled. All in all a truly wonderful experience. Will be coming back soon, to try the weekday lunches or dinners.

We were served by a waitress who felt she was doing us a favour by giving us more bread, than they normally give, so we could mop up the soup. Little did we know that we would need this to fill us up! We ordered the fish bouillabaisse which is nothing like the picture on the website! It consisted of one prawn, plus the head of another one and four mouthful sized pieces of fish, three of which were okay and one piece full of bones that I had to spit out. My husbands meal wasn’t any better he had a two inch wide piece of lamb which he was very disappointed in. Very expensive and very disappointed!!! We will definitely not be returning.

Visited last weekend with family and friends. Notes from our visit1. Please clean your toilets. Sinks flity...2. Chefs should be wearing hats and kitchen uniforms. They shouldn't be working with their Jean's...NOT HYGIENIC3. Menu is very good, but the execution of the dishes are horrible. Eg: brushetta should be on a toasted bread, tomatoes should be room temperature not ice cold from fridge...4. You shouldn't be serving food on a chipped plates.Such a shame as they have a lovely concept and menu but lack of care and management. We wont be returning.

Overall an odd experience, it was as though the person working behind the bar didn’t want us there from the moment we arrived and asked for menus. Just very blunt with our whole group and they weren’t busy as it was mid-week at lunch so not sure why we were given a dismissive energy. Nice pub, food and garden though so it was a shame. Doubt we’ll visit again as would prefer to try other local businesses
