Came here Saturday night, bouncers were efficient, inside it was decent. Toilets are clean but a bit of a trek upstairs especially if you have had a few!Easy to order and service was decent, Came here Sunday, had very little food, was very quiet, managed to find one breakfast they still had, took a while to come despite being quiet, wasn’t the warmest, was burnt in places, not great,

We initially planned to have a drink and then a meal. Struggled to find a clean table, tables with dirty plates, glasses and food remains, carpet looked like it needed a good clean. Went to bar, got served quickly but had to wait ages for my change. The girl appeared to be having a chat with another staff member. She walked right past me twice and never gave any explanation. Eventually came back , no apology given , when I asked about the delay she abruptly replied there was a problem with the till. Had our drinks, decided not to eat there as tables still sticky and not cleared. As we left the girl who had served me and another one did start to clear up but were talking to each other and seemed disinterested in what they were supposed to be doing. Whole place was run down looking, not the usual Wetherspoons standard.

This is a place that we visit regularly as it is so convenient to meet friends here. Myself and my husband met four friends here this lunchtime. Food was good as usual accompanied by the quality of beer and wine that we expect from Whetherspoons. However, by 2.30pm on a Tuesday, steak Tuesday no less, they ran out of house wine!!! When questioned, the bar staff could offer no alternative and just shrugged. This resulted in our group just sitting for the next hour nursing the remains of our wine. Poor show Whetherspoons.

You pretty much know what you're getting with Wetherspoons food; it's never going to be fine dining but it does a great job filling a hole, and my experiences here have always been good. The Peg as it's affectionately known to locals excels thanks to the ridiculously fast service (I've often had food served up no more than 3 minutes after ordering) and absurdly cheap prices (beer + burger usually goes for £6-7).I also really like that it's one of the few bars in Chelmsford where you can actually hold a proper conversation; they keep their TVs muted which a) allows you to talk and b) mostly keeps out the football + sport crowd, so it never tends to get too rowdy. It can take a little while to get served at the bar on occasion and it probably would benefit from having more staff members on the bar sometimes, but I can't really knock the place. If they did table service and had a beer garden I'd probably never leave!

I went today for lunch with a friend. I asked for a cheese and tomato toasties and i asked if i can have half chips half salad with it. (i am pregnant and i really wanted both of them). The waiter told me they cannot do that cause maybe they already started making it but after he went to ask in the kitchen. He came back and his answer was: you can have only chips or salad if you want both you have to pay extra for one. I told him i was there yesterday also and they did it for me without paying something extra. I went back to my table disappointed. After long time waiting for our food the waitress came with ham and tomato toasties (even if it wasn't my order and i mentioned i don't eat pork). She apologised and again i asked her if i could have half chips half salad. She told me i have to choose one item and she left to change my food which was their mistake.I couldn't believe they cannot offer me what i wanted (it wasn't so big deal) after they made the mistake and i had to wait more time for my food. The service is really disappointing and the staffs sometimes are confused how to deal with customers. I like this place to have a chat with friends but is not really good if you want something with good quality or good service.

Typically 'Wetherspoons' in that it does what it says on the tin - cheap drinks and cheap food. Well, you do get what you pay for and it is never more true than at a Wetherspoons house. The drinks are very good value (if they can keep prices down why can't everybody else?) however, they are not seeking to win any Michelin stars with the food which can be a tad indifferent depending on who is in the kitchen. But it is good value compared to their competitors and I am all for that! My one criticism with the Peg is that the bar service is dreadfully slow, mainly because they never seem to have enough staff of during the busy times!

After receiving my meal voucher from the manager because of a couple of bad experiences we (myself and two friends) decided to use it a couple of weeks ago. We were served by the deputy manager who was very friendly and put our food choices through the till including drinks. We decided to try the curries again as this was what the main problem was with before and i can happily say all the food was 1. In stock and 2. Steaming hot! The bhajis and samosas were cooked through properly and the poppadoms were not oily at all, so great all round. The waitress was very friendly and asked after 5 minutes if everything was ok with the food, we were then asked near the end if our meal by another member of staff if we were happy with everything. I'm pleased to report that they listen to their customers and make changes that are needed. Maybe other places should take this approach of offering a meal voucher so that customers can give somewhere a second chance after they have made some changes. Will be visiting again soon!

I used to go here often but have been going to the other Wetherspoons in Chelmsford as the standards there are more consistent. But a friend and I decided to try it again a few days ago as it is near work and handy for lunch. Despite not being overly busy we couldn't find a clean table. Service was slow at the bar which was a nuisance when we had to get back to work although the staff were friendly and did acknowledge us while we were waiting, something which doesn't always happen in pubs. Surprisingly there was no vodka of any kind and stocks were low generally on drinks. I would say this is unusual though. Our food would have been nice and good value but arrived stone cold. We had to get back to work so didn't wait to return it. In fairness the staff would probably have replaced it if we had asked. But as another reviewer said the place does seem to have gone downhill.

We've lived near Chelmsford for many years but never tried the Ivory Peg. Last Saturday evening we did so and it was not so good that we shall be there every week or so bad we shall never return.Marie had a beefburger and I had lamb rogan josh. She had a G&T, I had a pint of Ruddles. It came to £11 which was very good value but...The burger was not the best beef as it was quite fatty. My Indian was fine except the papadoms were a bit greasy. Drinks were as they should be.The restaurant is open, airy and well lit. It was not crowded at 7.00 pm. We had an aircon vent over our table which was blowing the menus off the table. The server, a pleasant and friendly guy, got it turned down. Some young men at the next table were noisy. They weren't behaving badly but two of them had voices like foghorns so we had to depart before looking at the dessert offerings.

I've been here many times now and eaten here quite a few times too. First, the positives, the staff are really friendly and helpful and service is usually pretty quick. They seem to recognize more regular users and often know what we're going to order before we've asked, which is nice. Price wise, it also seems a bit cheaper than most Wetherspoons which was a surprise to me - I'd assumed they were all the same, more or less.I'm not a fanatical drinker but appreciate the usual features of the chain such as guest beers and a wide range. They do tend to run out of some drinks on certain days and it's a fairly safe bet that on a Sunday night, one of the beers we like will be off.Food is variable. I've used the Steak Night, Curry Night and off the menu. Steak was really good the first time, average the second and pretty poor the third. Not a huge fan of the Wetherspoons curries and each time I try one I wonder why. They seem to vary only in heat with little to differentiate flavour wise, at least the ones I try. They are very good if you have any issues though, we've complained a few times and each time it was handled extremely well, unlike a few other places I've visited. Food is always piping hot and they often bring out extra plates/cutlery without being asked if we have a few people in the group eying up the sharing platter for 2.As others have noted, cleanliness is a bit of an issue, tables take a while to get cleaned and you often see plates full of dried up leftovers hanging around for ages. One bizarre quirk is that the loos look like they've escaped from a 1930's cinema. Downstairs, the pub is 'normal' then you go through the aluminium clad doors and enter another universe. Quite bizarre. They're always nice & clean and smell fine which is unusual these days. For all it's faults, I like the place. The staff, ease of service and relative lack of noise and drunks makes for a relaxing evening. It could just do with being a bit quicker off the mark clearing tables and more predictable food. I understand they have a new cook in who is much better so I may have to try something again.

This was a horrid experience and never to be repeated. We arrived on Sunday at 1pm and could not find a clean table. The free ones were covered in dirty glasses, plates and bits of food. We sat down as we thought a member of staff would surely be along to clear up. How wrong we were as in an hour and a half we did not see a table cleared or cleaned and the dirty glasses etc just increased. We watched several people come in, look around and walk out again. We had ordered food so had to stay and after 45 minutes waiting for 2 roasts they arrived and one was wrong. My husband had ordered roast chicken and was given beef. We queried it and we were told we would have to wait another half an hour if we wanted it changed. The pub's mistake and we had to wait. How long does it take to replace beef with chicken? Admittedly he was offered a free drink and he chose to eat the beef rather than wait. I was amazed they still had any clean glasses by then!A bit later in the day we went to a similar of style of pub near the station which had lovely clean tables and a much more pleasant atmosphere, plus football on the TV? How we wished we had gone there originally. I think this one was called the Original Plough or something similar.I know you cannot expect too much from a Wetherspoons as it is cheap and cheerful but cleanliness and good customer service, yes I do. We will not be frequenting the Wetherspoons again.

I used to visit here with friends every Thursday 6 years ago for the curry night, and everytime it was packed full of people and the food was fantastic. These days it a different story...we came here 8 months ago for a cheap work meal out, based on how nice I remembered it to be. People who ordered food after us were served first, they had run out of onion bhajis and our samosas were missing and when we asked for them the people opposite us also had the same problem. When they came out they were stone cold, and the curries were luke warm, (especially worrying when you ordered a chicken dish). We put it down to a bad night for the staff, so decided to give it one last try a few weeks ago. surprise surprise nothing had changed apart from the fact that our table of 6 accounted for a quarter of the people in there. Some of us ordered kormas as didn't like it too hot, however after returning to the table we were told that they had run out of kormas so offered to change for a tikka masala and have a free dessert. When the meals came out half of them were missing the onion bhajis and when we asked where they were, sorry we've run out (either they hadn't ordered more than 10 or the staff had been eating them, al like I said the food eating part of the pub was almost empty). Offered samosas, they were hot this time round! Poppadoms however, absolutely saturated in oil and I mean they came out with a lake of oil in the middle if each one, some if which ran on to my colleagues shirt which he can't get the stain out of after washing it! I don't know what has gone so wrong here, Thursday nights used to be bustling here, the curries were £5.99 and you could go large for £1.59 more and you'd get a bhaji, samosa and really nice Bombay potatoes. And surely if you know that on your menu you do a curry night every Thursday, you make sure you order enough curry food. Come on guys!!

We were visiting Chelmsford for the day, so had the opportunity of calling in to Wetherspoons twice, as we knew from experience that normally the overall standard meets our expectations. As usual, it was large, busy and noisy, but with a good choice of food and drinks. We visited mid-morning, just for coffee, and again about 1.30 p.m. for lunch. No complaints about food, price, speed of service, BUT why can't waiting staff deliver plates of food to tables on TRAYS (safer and more hygienic than dipping thumbs into food) and then use the empty trays to clear tables on their return to the serving area. For the duration of our second visit (nearly an hour) our adjacent table was not cleared at all, and became a general dumping ground for used crockery and cutlery, etc, as clients tried to clear tables for their own use. Many other tables were not cleared, either.Staff awareness and proper training would ensure more tables were immediately available for diners, many of whom played a table-swapping game as more favourable tables became available.More staff, especially on a Saturday, would certainly help.

This pub is no better or worse than others I have visited. We popped in for a late breakfast and found exactly what we expected - good quality food at a low price but an understaffed bar. The staff clearly had no idea who was next to be served - this is common in this chain of pubs and really needs to be sorted out. Food arrived in the promised time scale and was hot and well cooked so no complaints.

Another great Wetherspoon's pub (personally prefer this to the Thomas Mildmay - that is more a younger venue). Often eat lunch here on a Saturday. Always has around 6 to 8 real beers available.

Good value. Cod n chips was nice but cod had funny taste. Getting a table on your own with the system is a joke. Will go again.

I visited here last week on a tuesday. Staff were like robots. No one was friendly at all. Food was horrible and just about warm. I left most of it. Lots of swearing. People serving at the bar served three people in front of me. No thank you, not anything. Basically ignored. Other spoons so much better. Will never visit here again.

A standard Wetherspoons pub in the centre of Chelmsford. Prices of drinks are extremely reasonable but, unfortunately, that does attract some 'unsavioury' characters. In the case of the Ivory Peg, it does service the usual shopping clientele of families and, like me, oldies. On one of our shopping expeditions, I HATE SHOPPING, we decided to have an all-day breakfast. I must admit I was pleasantly surprised at the quality and quantity of this 'feast' for the price. Sausages, Bacon, Hash browns, baked beans, eggs and a mushroom with, which normally places charge extra, slices of toast and butter. Served very quickly with sauces and relishes to hand on the table. We will be back.

We dropped in for lunch and chose from an offer which gave a reduction if two meals were ordered. I had the jacket potato with 5 bean chilli and my friend had the chilli. We both enjoyed our meals which we felt was good value for money. The coffee was cheap, tasty, not bitter and refills were free. The atmosphere was not as much of a pub at the time we went but more like a fast food place. It was mainly frequented by older couples and females! Men appeared to be in the minority, perhaps something to do with it being a Monday lunchtime.

Visited here yesterday with some work colleagues as had been many times last year for their curry club. On arrival we went to the bar to get drinks and noticed the menu on the bar so had a look whilst waiting for our friend to arrive. We we're suddenly told by a member of staff 'if you want food go and find a table', which I though was quite abrupt, would have rather had 'hello, welcome to wetherspoons, have you been here before?' We went to sit down and we were looking at the menu which had gone down in price so we thought fantastic! Even better value. On my friends arrival she and my colleague went to order our food and came back saying that they were out of onion bhajis so we'd have 2 samosas each instead. That was fine. 5 mins later the couple behind us had a curry delivered to them, however the kitchen staff had forgotten to make the other curry so she had a 10 minute wait watching her partner eat. My friend ordered her curry after us and hers arrived 5 mins after ordering, we thought this was a little strange but waited for 15 mins until I asked my colleague if they'd given her a receipt for our good to which she said they hadn't so went up to complain, they gave her a duplicate and said oh yours is just coming out now, funny that! So food was delivered and I noticed that the couple behind had bitten into a samosa and it was stone cold. We thought we should check ours and they were cold too! Sent them back, waiter very apologetic, said they had a new 'breed of kitchen staff'?! Also mango chutney was missing so asked for that but never got it. The main curry was nice but the poppadoms were sooo oily and greasy. Overall not a good experience, I know people say you get what you pay for but it's never normally like that. Maybe they have new management but my advise would be to give staff training on customer service and to employ actual 'chefs'!

Worse experience ever here, Tables always dirty, plates never cleared much prefer the other spoons The Thomas Mildmay, staff a lot nicer, food and drinks cheaper. Much more atmosphere, ordered a beef burger with a drink, chips not very warm and burger was in fact cremated, did not even get a check back for food so i just left most of it. Its a shame as i really like Wetherspoons pub but this one was unfortunately a big let down!

At this Wetherspoons by the main bus stops out of Chelmsford. Not an aesthetic joy (converted shop) and rather gloomy but excellent £5.35 steak and a pint deal. It was busy, but the food came up in 10 mins flat. Friendly staff. By the river.Good value and the Brentwood ale in excellent condition.

Both me and the wife had to visit this year, on 2 different days, for an appointment in Chelmsford. Seeing how not many buses lead to my home town, I had to spend some time somewhere, and I chose Wetherspoon as I now what to expect from their restaurants. Good food, decent atmosphere, and was pleasantly surprised to see a book collection available for reading inside this one, while seating at a window table, with a view of the park and part of the city center buildings. The hot chocolate was a bit too sweet, but other then that I was quite happy, and appreciated being left alone, which let me read in peace while waiting for time to pass to be able to get home.

Wetherspoons are on the whole good value and fair. Todays visit was not so. A week ago we had a great meal at the Wetherspoons in the Corn Exchange in Bury, Great venue, bright and cheerful, busy, noisy and bright. The Ivory Peg, by contrast, is dark, noisy, and a bit grimy - tables are not cleared promptly and the glasses/crockery is piled up at the woefully small kitchen window and on adjacent tables - at this time of year its not suprising that the place is buzzing - with insects as well as people. No comment on the toilets - didnt visit them. My gripe is about the way we were overcharged. Lots of menu items come with a drink included in the price, or just a pound extra, BUT if you do not order the appropriate drink with the meal, it costs more than having it with one, this seems unfair. When my husband pointed out that he had been charged more for two meals and two drinks than he should have the staff members tried to imply that he was mistaken - and they were not polite. The duty manager eventually put the same items through the till and added on the "free" drink and grudgingly produced a small refund - this is at best misleading - but I think its probably meant to be that way - the original server could not grasp our complaint, and said that he was struggling to put into words the reason why we were mistaken "without being rude" - I told him that it would therefore be best if he didnt bother. Overall the attitude of the Server and the Duty Manager was unhelpful and condescending - surely it should not cost more to go without the offered free drink and have something else? We were happy to pay extra for a drink that was not included in the meal deal , but not to also pay extra for the meal as well - if this is simply an issue of the order in which items are put into the till it should not be difficult to understand, or to put right - should it?

A large establishment, not very publike but good choice of traditional pub food - eg Sausage & Mash, fish & chips, hamburgers - large helpings at very reasonable prices (food orders often include free drink if you scan the menu carefully). Not much atmosphere but good sized TV showing Wimbeldon tennis on our visit. Not much service, order at the bar.

This is not the typical Wetherspoon offering. Yes the menu and consistent quality of food and value for money are the same, but this is not a pub and doesn’t have a pub atmosphere. In spite of this or perhaps because of this the Ivory Peg always appears busy through the day attracting a broad clientele. The dining areas are on two levels and if you want to sit by the window you can either sit at eye level with those outside some of whom are queuing at the bus stop or be at a lower level with those walking past. The generally open rectangular shape with the bar along the back gives the place a bustling feel, which fits perfectly with a days shopping or an after work bite to eat, drink or just use as a meeting place before going on to an entertainment venue.
