We went to this restaurant for Sunday lunch .We both opted for roast beef and this came with the usual trimmings. We ordered an extra Yorkshire pudding but had we known how HUGE they were we wouldn't have ( They quite literally take up half of your plate )and also cauliflower cheese which was delicious but pricey at £7 . The lunch in general was OK but that's it..The meat was tough and very overdone (shame they don't offer a pink option ) The roast potatoes were awful quite obviously frozen and the veg was hard and very undercooked ..The Yorkshire pudding was lovely as was the cauliflower cheese but the rest was below average..we had to keep asking for more horseradish as it came in a teeny teeny tiny pot ..I had 2 to myself and could have done with 2 more and my husband wanted much more gravy .Our bill for a bottle of prosecco , 2 beers ,1 coffee and our meal came to £103. The service was good although we did wait a long while for a dessert menu .It was a pleasant busy atmosphere but pricey for what it was . We wouldn't go back .

The only pub we can actually walk to where we live, albeit 25 minutes, but lovely when weather is nice. You do have to order everything either at the bar for alcoholic drinks or in the BakeHouse for coffees cakes snacks lunch etc. There only ever seems to be one barman behind the bar serving restaurant as well, so the wait can sometimes be long! Having got our wine we ordered some chips in the BakeHouse. We knew it was busy so expected a wait, but nearly an hour and 15 mins later, wine finished, we still didn’t get our chips so cancelled the order. They gave us back cash despite paying by card! The whole time we were there the table behind us was getting piled higher and higher with people’s dirty plates etc attracting wasps and flies no attempt made to clear that and many other tables in a similar state. Shame because it is a pleasant place to sit outside and enjoy a glass or two and a snack but clearly very short staffed. Slow service, long waiting times and lack of cleanliness do sadly let it down.

We held our father’s wake here & they did an amazing job. The food was great, the staff were friendly & helpful & the atmosphere was perfect for the occasion. The setting was so comfortable with plenty of indoor seating - the outside seating was brilliant for the good weather we were blessed with!

Lovely roast dinner and there are now vegetarian options available on request (vegetarian sausages). Note that these were not listed on the menu and I had to ask if they had something suitable. Still a bit of a shame there isn't a nutroast just yet, but at least I got the rest of the trimmings!

We were first time visitors to this pub and found the pub looked very appealing from outside, with a large car park also helps. As you enter it felt lacking in atmosphere (note kids running around and shouting does not equal atmosphere) and looked a little tired. Drinks were slow to arrive, but the beer was very good when it did arrive. Menu was appealing to all of us and the food was excellent, even if a little pricey (extra £4 for a bowl of peas!), and the service was very good. The overall feeling was one of slight disappointment, some of the chairs were wobbly and had to be swapped around by guests, tables looked tired and would benefit from some attention, carpet had loose threads showing, distinct lack of soft furnishings left it feeling bland. So in summary food was great, just let down by detail.

The very worst Sunday lunch ever, the pork was 3 slices of pure fat, the crackling had been heated up in the microwave the Yorkshire pudding was a large crisp, roast spuds were awful the only thing that was great was the broccoli, we told the waiter that we couldn’t eat it and was leaving he said OK, no apology just OK like he was used to this happening, needless to say we won’t go back

Last time I’ve been was about 3,4 years ago. The service used to be ok , same as the food. Nothing special but good! This time the service was non existent - on more than 4 occasions we struggled to get someone to take food/ drinks orders - and the food was a massive disappointment ! My views obviously reflect others opinions too. Certainly not rushing back very soon !

This has been a long term favourite venue of ours over many years. We tend to visit a couple of times each year, but it has really gone downhill recently. Our visit this week, just after Christmas, was immediately spoiled by the welcome which was indifferent to say the least and I had already noticed lots of litter on the floor as I walked through the lobby. I quickly told my wife that I sensed that something was wrong. The place was far from busy - almost unheard of - and the place looked tired and neglected. We were directed to our table after being told that some menu choices were unavailable. This didn’t trouble us too much because it didn’t affect our plans. But once we came to place our order we a whole load of other menu items had disappeared, including all the steak choices. This profoundly affected our meal and frankly if we hadn’t been so lazy we should have walked out at this point. When the food arrived it was dry and tasteless. I chose the fish and chips, as I often do, but it was definitely the poorest I had endured in a long time. I was also shocked to find that mushy peas were £4 extra.

Christmas day honest review Not the warmest of welcomes for the festive day. Starters small but OK. Mains Beef very tough chewy. not good roast Potatoes so rubbery couldnt cut them and not cooked. Vegetables luke warm some under cooked. Cheese board sent back as it hair in it. Wow such a shame, if your taking bookings and people's hard earned money you should provide a better standard of food than that. Won't be back .

Christmas Day - we are a large family of 19 and this is the first time we have ever been out for Christmas dinner! We are also a family of food snobs so we were a little dubious of what our dinner would be like - we were put in the bakery by ourself which was amazing as we can be a bit loud at times!! We had a lovely waitress called Jess who was so professional and friendly and was so attentive. The food was pre ordered which made the day smoother and ever single plate of food that came out was incredible, hot and tasty! Not at any time did we feel rushed or pressured to leave. Thank you so much to all the staff for helping us enjoy our Christmas Day , with special thanks to Jess - hope you enjoyed your much needed glass of Prosecco xx would defiantly recommend

Vegetables boiled within an inch of their life swimming in water , looked like prison food. Do not eat here! Took meat home for dog and dog wouldnt eat it!!!

I am really sorry to write this review but people need to be warned about the standard of Christmas dinner here recently. We had been going to this restaurant for Christmas dinner since 2017. The food used to be great and we loved eating here as a family at Christmas. It used to be a real treat. Sadly this year was just so awful. We had to have our meal partially refunded because the food was so poor and contained a shard of hard plastic! For £120pp the meal was an absolute rip off. The starters were very small and one had to be sent back because the scallops were overcooked. Staff were apologetic and quickly replaced the starter with something else. The mains were terrible. Dry meat, cold boiled vegetables and the food seemed to have been reheated rather than freshly prepared. Roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings were hard and cold like they’d been reheated from frozen. However the worst part was that there was a shard of hard plastic in my meal that cut into my gum and injured my tooth. Fortunately I didn’t swallow the plastic. It wasn’t soft like a bit of piping bag, it was literally a big shard of tough grey plastic, almost like it’d broken off and come out of the dishwasher or something, and no one had checked the plate. When we reported it to the waitress she was shocked and got the manager who came over and dealt with the issue. They decided to partially refund my meal after deducting our drinks from the total but didn’t offer anything for some of the other meals on our table, which hadn’t been finished. After getting a big shard of plastic in my meal it put other people in my family off of their meals, which were already pretty poor. Overall very disappointing and such a shame because the waiting staff were working very hard. The manager was apologetic and I do feel for the staff, but we honestly did not expect to have a meal like this after so many brilliant Christmas dinners here in the past. It’s almost like a totally different restaurant now, which is so sad. With it being Christmas and everything closed, we came home hungry and ended up having some party food which was meant for new year for our Christmas dinner. Very disappointing . I do hope they can turn things around, but at the moment it is not worth a visit let alone the £120 they are charging.

Came here because of recommendations and we were so disappointed. Came in on a Sunday so ordered off the Sunday menu. I had fish and chips. And the others had steak and a veggie wellington. My fish was really bland. Not even the batter had any good flavour and the triple cooked chips were so disappointing. Some were still hard. Which can't be hard to get right. Veggie wellington was okay according to the others and steak was good so it's not all bad. The parmesan and truffle fries were very average. I have had many over the years just because they are so delicious and I always order some for the table as it goes down a treat but the fries were very basic tasting and the truffle was just not very tasty. All in all a very very average experience and we will definitely not be coming back. Service was good though.

Busy pub with comfy and cosy dining rooms with a buzzing atmosphere and excellent menu. I reserved a table on the day and spoke with Stuart who took my booking and was the first person we met on arrival. His welcome was as good as the atmosphere. Draco was our professional fun waiter who turned our catch-up lunch into a special couple of hours. Haddock was outstanding, chips melt in the mouth and the Tartar Sauce is one of the best to be tasted. Wine was perfect and the outstanding bit for my husband was Adnams Ghost Ship on tap as a guest ale. We passed on Starters and Puds and the lunch for three of us including drinks was £78 and excluding our gratuity and in my opinion a lunch of this quality in great surroundings with a fun atmosphere and staff who obviously enjoy their work. Thanks to everyone at the Fox and Goose…

Went for a family meal as was a central location, very pretty pub from the outside but lacking atmosphere inside and was very clinical. Staff seemed disinterested even though initially we were the only table seated in the restaurant. Very disappointed to see a pub charging top dollar for food which was fairly non-descript, no garnish, no peas with the fish and chips and my beef rib was supposed to come with shallot mash but there was no shallots to be seen and for £19.99 was incredibly poor value especially as sides such as vegetables were an extra £5! Would definitely not return.

My partner, 11 week old daughter & I walked in to The Fox and Goose this week for a spot of lunch and it was lovely - even though we hadn't pre-booked, we were greeted with big smiles and the service was prompt and warm. The ambience of the place was great and the waitress was so considerate and offered us a table with space for the pram and out of the way enough so I was comfortable enough to breastfeed. There was a good selection of food and I had the chicken thai curry with the rice and mango chutney and it was really tasty and had a good amount of vegetables as well as chicken. My partner had the beef burger with pulled pork and he said it was delicious; we also finished off the lunch with cakes from the Bakehouse, which were yummy and we were given really generous slices - I couldn't finish mine! I really recommend the cherry & almond cake.

I went for a pre-Christmas mid-day lunch with a friend today and was horrified by what I had walked in to. The restaurant had all the windows and doors closed. The distancing of the seats (table to table) was well under 2 metres and two of the younger male staff were serving without any form of face covering. Walking around the tables and serving food without a mask is, frankly, disrespectful to your customers. The food was good but it got worse when, by 13:00, the resteraunt was packed. The air conditioning kicked in as the restaurant got hot and humid thus, blowing any virus particles around the dining area. I left as soon as I could. It would appear that the owners were totally focused on maximising covers and hence, exposing customers to a much higher risk of COVID infection.

Very happy with the food and service. This was quickly becoming our “go to” place. However after having lunch there today with my 81 year old mother, I am not sure we will be going back. We left the restaurant and I dropped my mother back at the station. She phoned me after a few minutes quite distraught. She had lost her card wallet with her train ticket and credit cards in it. I immediately phoned the restaurant and a gentleman looked around the area where we had been sitting. He couldn’t fine anything and passed me over to our waitress. I explained the situation and she said nothing was there. “It’s really strange, I explained. We were only there a few minutes ago, and now we are at the station and the wallet is nowhere to be seen”. “Well, if you are accusing me of lying, she said, I am not”. I was quite taken back by her term of phrase. It was not professional, it was not courteous and it was most definitely not called for. I would suggest some more training in customer relations are required here. I wish the owners well. The food and ambience were great. However with this particular waitress I would say I was very disappointed.

Sunday lunch for 2, both had the super roast for £19.95, absolutely amazing, veggies were lovely, glad we ordered the creamy leeks on the side, worth the extra but no other extras needed! All 4 meats were delicious and got horseradish, apple sauce, mint sauce and cranberry to fit with them all! Really didn’t need pud but both of us piggies couldn’t resist! He had sticky toffee pudding and I had treacle tart, both lovely. We then went home and put elasticated waste bands (pj’s) on and lay belly up for the rest of the day! Didn’t need anything else! Was fab and we will be back. We read a review that the staff weren’t great but I beg to differ, there were plenty of them and all attentive, didn’t have to wait for anything. I gave this place an excellent review on 14/2/2020 after going there regularly over many years. Today it was not as full as usual so no excuses. But it has gone downhill. No marvellous Maitre D' , the loss of all their very good wait staff, food far worse. To give an example I think the potatoes had been cooked long before and warmed up -almost inedible. Service was abominable; example I asked for the dessert menu and ten minutes later I caught the waitress's eye and she remembered. Another 5 minutes before I could catch someone's eye to order and then 15 minutes for some pre-prepared food to be delivered. As for getting the bill waitresses were there clearing tables but definitely not looking round to see if anyone wanted anything.. A verbal message sent to the maitre d' got no response. I spent 17 years in the kitchen of a house with guests who appreciated good food and good service - more appreciative than some A list personalities and we would have been thrown out if we had worked like that. Sorry - no return there until they improve.

So why did we want some more?Eventually an additional two ha;f slices turned up, well after our two other companions had finished their meal. There were apologies but these were obviously a bit late.

Visited this pub again after 18 months. The standard of the food has gone downhill. I had a meat platter for Sunday lunch. The chicken was over cooked and the beef was chewy and fatty. It used to be a first class meal, but not anymore. There was 6 of us and we all thought the same. We had 1 medium bowl of veg between us, it was hardly enough for 3 people, never mind six. We asked for extra veg and actually got charged for it. It reminded me of reading Dickens stories. How tight can you get. I and my guests will not patronise this pub restaurant again.

Really liked the quirk of ordering at the caravan!Only reason for 4 stars rather than 5 stars is the fire pit (at far end of external seating area) was probably using damp wood. However, we visited last Saturday and were extremely disappointed by the standard of the food. The most upsetting thing was that the cost was the same when quite clearly the food was not!! Such a shame. I hope this is just a blip due to lockdown and I hope it regains the quality and standard as previously but, in the meantime I really feel the cost should be adjusted accordingly to the lower standard of food

I am assuming lock down has created the issues we experienced today. We have been a few times before and really enjoyed our meal. Today we shared a mixed olive with garlic chiabatta and alioli. A very meagre starters with what amounted to a desert spoon of alioli which no doubt came from a jar. Nearly £5 for a handful of olives. Our mains consisted of a piece of flan with salad and skinny fries. Tasteless flan. The other main was fish cakes and skinny fries with a distinct lack of fish and mainly mash potato. Both fries were barely warm. For such a basic meal for the price charged, very disappointing. No specials in existence.

Booked for my partners (very belated) birthday meal. He needs Gluten Free options so after seeing the really good reviews and choice of separate GF menu, we thought it would be our new favourite place. SO DISAPPOINTED with the Roast Dinners. One of the young waiters brought our meals over, and he didn’t know which was the gluten free, and which wasn’t. After confirming with one of the more senior staff members, we addressed the fact that one of the roast dinners was missing both the gravy and Yorkshire pudding. Once all was rectified, we realised it was all cold even in the centres, and the ‘seasonal veg’ was more of a boil in the bag job as well as being bland. The roast potatoes were nearly solid, and had no crisp to them. Definitely needed cooking longer and fluffing more! We noticed some other customers poking them around a bit too. Overall, We won’t be returning and were very disappointed with the quality of the meal.

The heater next to our seating was broken which is a little disappointing we mentioned this to the staff and they did try and fix this, however it was not possible. After we left I had to contact the restaurant again as I thought I had left my hat, they responded quickly and were very helpful.

Booked a table of 4 for lunch today, we waited on arrival in a designated area marked and after 10 mins no one came, another diner said she had done the same, terrible.Eventually after checking in and waiting another 20 mins a member of staff appeared on asking if we could order she said we had to go to the counter in The Bake House, might have been helpful to have been advised that on arrival. When the food did arrive some had to be returned as the rice was a solid lump and 3 of the plates had luke warm food. Sadly there are too many restaurants out there struggling to survive at the minute to spend my money here again. Very disappointed

Me and my other half popped in here on a Saturday morning for a coffee and a sandwich during lockdown. Lots of choice on the menus for both drinks and snacks- we both agreed that our sandwiches were divine, and the general ambience of the place and the surroundings were lovely. Would definitely like to come back when we're back to "normal" and dine properly.

We have been to the Bakehouse loads of times before lockdown but we were so impressed with how clean and professional they handled such a difficult situation. We sat in the garden which is really well spaced out as well as being really relaxing. The food was excellent. Everything was done to a really high standard with such amazing flavours. It made us forget that all the restrictions in normal life had gone. A little oasis. We will be visiting again and again.

Lunch today celebrating our daughters forthcoming birthday. There was an extensive menu, our food was hot, well cooked and nicely presented. Large portions, none of us could manage dessert. Service was a little slow but the restaurant was full, so to be expected. Safe, clean restaurant and toilets. Plenty of parking. Recommended

A reasonably standard menu but also specials on the notice board in the dining room.Fast friendly service and if it is just two people you would normally sit down immediately - no reservations on weekends. The menu covers the norms - good honest meats, vegetables etc and are generous, well cooked but not 3 star fussy.. You could vary the order - change chips to something else if available. For us the attraction with most roasts is the half portion; a normal roast is totally huge like 5 inches high on the plate but you can ask for a half portion at half price and they will almost literally cut a standard portion in half; that is perfect for our more normal appetites.Extensive wine list but cannot comment as I have my favouritesStaff extremely friendly and attentative. We have been going there perhaps twice a month for a couple of years for Sunday lunch. In the same building is a snack bar which we very occasionally been to; it had a limited menu but the food was goodParking; when you approach it looks full but if the car park is actually full there will be places on the road which has no restrictions.

A party of seven of us met up last night for a meal and a get-together. None of us had been to the Fox and Goose recently and we picked the restaurant more for the central location than anything else. However, we were all delighted with our meals, main course and desserts, and the staff and service could not have been better. Can thoroughly recommend, although a tad more expensive than the average, but well worth it.

Really lovely food, much nicer than your usual pub menu but also more expensive. The salmon noodles were excellent. Would probably return only for a special occasion as it was quite pricey. Service was very good but felt it was lacking in atmosphere on a Saturday night, though it was January.

Order the roast pork, you won’t be sorry. Great crackling and huge, tasty yorkies. The sausage meat is delicious and the roast potatoes are the perfect level of crispy. The whole family loves coming here.

Would have booked a table for Sunday lunch, but the Fox and Goose don't take bookings. So on arrival we requested a table for two and were advised that there were no tables available for 15-20mins, so were told to order a drink at the bar. This would have been ok, however, if there weren't at least three four-person empty tables, of which one was then filled by a party that arrived after us! Therefore, we rightly came to the conclusion that they were waiting for four-person parties to fill these up (to get their money's worth). When we asked if we could sit on a four-person table we were told we couldn't! We decided to leave and ended up at the Leather Bottle in Blackmore who, guess what, fitted us in on a four-person table! Don't waste your time with the Fox and Goose - they don't have any perspective on customer service - we could have actually spent more than four-people who may have only ordered a main course each. We could have ordered champagne, three courses, dessert wines etc. for all they knew. They have lost two customers plus our friends and family who now won't be eating there. All so that they could fit two extra people on a table!

a really straightforward, excellent Gastro pub. The food is always good here, the service is attentive and the value is excellent. I would highly recommend it. I have read other comments with interest, specifically those that are on Christmas lunch, it is so difficult for a restaurant to get it right at Christmas, it is always a mad rush, so don't just judge them on that time of the year.

Appalling...!!! I arrived at the pub at 2.25 today I was approached by a nice waitress who I told I was just waiting for my partner who had gone back to the car as I forgot my phone. Once my partner arrived back I asked a young gentleman waiter if I could possibly have a table for 2, he turned to me very aggressively and stated ‘we stop serving at 2.30’ I went on to tell him I was arrived at 2.25, he sharply told me ‘ you didn’t ask for table, then he starting waving his hand at me saying bye, merry Xmas, I was gobsmacked, I cannot believe that management would allow a rude waiter to deal with paying customers so terribly. I visit this pub frequently as I live close by. I have never been spoken to so rudely, I will never return and will be telling lots of friends and family not to return either. Absolutely unbelievable.

The food was good and service at table was fine. But the place was freezing and we kept our coats on for the first hour. Our large table was 3 smaller and different tables pushed together leaving the two people in the middle isolated from the rest. Difficult to explain but very unsociable.

The local chapel choir, 25 strong and very good singers (concert standard) came in and asked if they could sing one or two carols for the customers. It has been a local tradition for 40 years, forming the culmination of their carol-singing in the village for Macmillan Cancer, apparently agreed with the pub in advance and advertised in the neighbourhood. The management refused to let them sing a note. Full marks for Christmas charity, guys!

The pub area is stunning, so cosy with a log burning fire and beautiful wooden beams! The restaurant part definitely feels more cold and not as much character in comparison which is a shame, when the pub area is so lovely, but still a very nice place. Food was good, all home cooked and fresh! Quite an extensive choice of wines too (Although I ordered a Moscato D’Asti and it was strangely not sparkling?!) We would definitely return here as prices were quite reasonable for home cooked local food!

We have always had a lovely meal at this restaurant - tasty food and big portions, plus service has always been very good from the staff - but sundays aren't great for a vegetarian. The roasts look epic, but there is no veggie option. Such a shame, and we would totally be a more regular customer if the menu could be a little more inclusive. It's time for The Fox and Goose to get with the Sunday programme...

From approaching the Bakehouse to entering this venue looked the part:very promising and already humming. We were able to pull two tables together and staff happy for this. Ordered drinks and appetisers whilst perusing the vast menus. Our friends were astounded at the choice and at the food being carried past us. We chose eventually and placed our orders.. not too long to wait and ....oh boy...were we ever happy with our choices all four of us?! Food awesome, staff lovely and not invasive. Defo coming back, probs for a meet-up Christmas meal (booking that shortly to be sure we get in) as the place is nicely situated for each couple. Highly recommended for a great time, and coincidently is opposite a really excellent garden centre. Do give The Bakehouse a try, and the restaurant too.

Good food for the price. Around 10 pound for a meal including a drink is good value for your money. Food is very good, but it is a pub so also a lot of drink options. If you look for a more fancy meal this is not the place for you.
