The Iron Duke in Basingstoke and Deane

Myself and two friends ended a summer evening bike ride here but unfortunately got caught in heavy rain. The welcome we received from everyone was lovely. The beer was good, the service was exceptional and welcoming and the food (beef and ale pie x 3) was exactly what we needed. I would recommend this place for all these reasons but especially for the friendly welcome. A really lovely pub.

We stayed for 2 nights here …So lucky as the weather was amazing, we was able to enjoy the tasty food in the garden while enjoying the sun. Room was comfy and has a lovely view across the fields. I enjoyed laying in the bath and watching the world go by as the view is lovely. All staff were polite and happy to help. The food is amazing. We will definitely come back again to just enjoy relaxing in the country side.

Our first visit. A very friendly service, good selection of drinks and excellent menu. Not a huge selection of dishes but quality food at its best. Offers great value for money and will definitely visit again. Easy parking.

Excellent family pub lunch. Friendly service. Pie of the day was ‘the best thing I’ve ever eaten’ by my son, 10 years old. My daughter, four, enjoyed feeding the goats. Thank you for such a lovely relaxed meal and afternoon.

The Iron Duke is a “go to ‘ pub. The food is homemade, fresh and home cooked,. The service amazing. It’s a small rural pub so no no road noise and it’s perfect for any age, any size group. We were in the outside garden, which is grassy with a nice marquee and some wooden tables with umbrellas.. no heaters .. service was fabulous .. others in the garden made it a friendly and interesting meal and chat, The food was so good we came back again day 2 .Amazing and we will be back . Thank you

booked table for 5..didnt seem to be many there..lady who served was lovely and must be rushed of her feet if it is busy and just her booking people in and serving.Food was very nice and tasty.I thought the menu was limited and expensive.Some reviews state good value, but i dont think £27 for an 8ounce steak,£15 for sausage and mash and £16 for burger and chips is good value

The Iron Duke is only just off the beaten track and well worth the slight diversion from the A35. With COVID restrictions we ate in the garden although we did eat inside on a previous visit. This place is a real gem with a superb menu and local ale. The prices are good value too as the portions are generous. Excellent, friendly service too. We are looking forward to our next visit.

We had eaten inside before pre-Covid and it was lovely. Went today late lunchtime (they serve food all day). Outside garden is totally gorgeous - should have taken some pictures! All safely distanced. Food stunningly lovely and quality drinks. All reasonably priced with great service. We will be back.

Booked a table of 4 - the others had been several times before. The atmosphere was great and the lady that served us was wearing a full face mask. Ordered the Camembert starter to share. Three of us had the fillet steak and one the hamburger - all the meals were excellent - as was the wine.Lovely meal and a pleasant end to my UK sojourn - but I will be back.Good luck with all the various lock-down rules and I hope you manage to stay open.

To me, the Iron Duke just gets better and better. Great service and the food is amazing. The Sunday roast is sublime.

An utter Gem of a place.... the beginning of a long lasting friendship! Found this incredible pub by accident and I’m so glad I did. James is a brilliant host and the pub has the best garden ever. It’s cosy (with a twinkle in its eye) and, on a sunny Tuesday afternoon, pours the perfect pint - and I’m sure all other days of the week. This is a must stop at pub.

Visit here often and we are never dissapointed. Felt safe and staff were clear with the rules that were in place. The food and drink were great and we will be back again for more.

We booked a table for 6 on the 25th August 2020;a table for 3 people,we were 1/4of an hour early but was greeted by a friendly waitress,and shown to our seats. Waited a while and over came the menus and asked what we would like to drink they arrived then we ordered our food,which when it arrived it was very well presented. The food was very good as were the puddings,we had the 50% off as per the eat out scheme,very nice meal will return very soon.

Elegimos el Iron Duke porque está cerca de donde vivimos y hemos estado allí antes y nos gustó.Estamos muy contentos de haberla elegido, la cerveza (Timothy Taylors) fue excelente (¡especialmente después de 4 meses!!). Ambos pedimos la pizza que estaba recién hecha y deliciosamente crujiente y muy abundante, no íbamos a molestarnos con el postre, pero un vistazo al menú y elegimos la olla de chocolate y el posset de limón, ambos divinos.Mathew y James nos hicieron sentir muy bienvenidos y su naturaleza amistosa se contagia a los otros clientes que dijeron hola, esta es siempre una de las cosas más agradables de la identificación junto con su naturaleza peculiar. Excellent service and excellent food again from here. They will always go the extra mile to cater for food allergies or intolerances by adapting their meals where they can. We wanted a table for two but apparently requesting a table with two metres between my and my partner is still not available... so we did take out instead..I ordered the burger with extra cheese and bacon and she ordered scampi n chips, we ordered on-line but found it easier and always a pleasure phoning through our order.. support local businesses instead of the chains and we want the Iron Duke to stick around so we can enjoy this place in person when this virus thing is over. 6 years ago give or take, we had our first date at this pub so we although not local locals, we still try and visit as much as possible.Now, although this is take out food, there is no compromise in quality and or flavour, the little details like mushy peas and tartare sauce make it so much better than normal take-out options and we will definitely be back, before lock down ends and after lock down.. It doesn’t feel like we are doing anything special but I love that we get thanked for our support, it doesn’t seem like we are supporting them too much, just by eating good quality food, well cooked and well presented, but none the less, it’s me that thanks you and will support you as much as we can in anyway possible.Thank you for a great meal, highly recommended and I urge anyone reading this.. order take out, you won’t be disappointed. We knew Covid 19 was coming and wanted to get a family meal in for my wife's birthday while we still could, and we couldn't have chosen better. Wonderful staff looking after our party of eight plus dog. Good parking, great food, nice ale and a nice table in a nook. The children were invited to feed the goat & chickens, which they thoroughly enjoyed. Lovely pub group style food, not part of a chain so fresh and a good menu. We were in no hurry and weren't rushed, an excellent afternoon (we were booked in late, after 2:00, to suit our guests).Now, writing this five days later, restrictions have kicked in and I feel so sorry (& worried) for these family businesses. I am just happy that we gave them a reasonable return for their service while we were able. We will return when restrictions allow.

My family came here for a 30th birthday meal, the staff couldn't have done more. They decorated the table for our arrival (I previously gave them the decor) They gave the birthday girl a glass of prosecco on the house which was so lovely! Everyone was super friendly and helpful. The food was delicious, everyone had different and everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals. It was our first time here and we will definitely be back! We had the best time. Thank you Iron Duke

Fabulous evening, excellent meal and service. Thank you all for wonderful welcome, the food was delicious. My husband is allergic to mushrooms and they offered to change the pate over the beef if he chose it for his meal, lovely just lovely. Would recommend

We used to come here, and in the beginning it was very good. It then dipped in quality.

Only been here once but my goodness what a visit. Had the largest pheasant I’ve ever had and it was superb, very filling, very challenging. I’ll be going there again for sure. A very charming gentleman looked after us. Location has it all.

Fabulous hearty food in a friendly pub. Worth seeking out and it’s only a few miles from A33/ Basingstoke/Reading .

We went in January and it was quiet. Service and food was outstanding. I had fishcakes (homemade) and my wife, a vegetarian, had halloumi burger. We had the fabulous sticky toffee pudding to follow. The staff were attentive and engaging, and we were made to feel very welcome. A great evening venue. Well worth booking for Sunday lunch we are told. Good portion sizes too, you will not come away hungry.

Our visit was a bit of a "Curates Egg". Some parts good and some not so good. Some of the party thought it was excellent but that was not my opinion. I ordered the beef roast. It was swimming in gravy and the horseradish sauce was on the side of the plate without me requesting - there was no mustard option. The roast potatoes were tiny pieces of potato.

Stayed here with my partner for a country get away and its been way above expectations! The staff are welcoming friendly and helpful. The pub is stunning and has a very country vibe. The food is excellent. We stayed in room 2 which was phenomenal. Clean, well kept, and again the design is way above any expectation. Cannot recommend the Duke enough!

We went back to this restaurant today for lunch after having a couple of greats evening meals here. The food was freshly cooked and delicious as always. Well worth a visit

Normalmente no escribo reseñas, pero tuve una mala experiencia aquí. Había 11 de nosotros que vinimos para el almuerzo del domingo. Comenzó bien, hasta que tuve un error en mi pajita que chupé y luego escupí y se arrastró por nuestra mesa. Tengo que decir que me hizo sentir extremadamente enfermo que tenía un insecto vivo en la boca. Sé que suceden cosas, pero cuando fui al bar para contarles y pedir una bebida fresca, apenas se disculparon, pero me trajeron una bebida nueva. También me cobraron por esta bebida, solo creo que si sucede algo así, tomar un jugo de naranja y limonada de la cuenta como un gesto de buena voluntad no habría sido mucho pedir.

Qué tarde tan fantástica tuvimos en el Iron Duke. Arreglé un almuerzo sorpresa de cumpleaños familiar para mi esposo y 20 miembros de la familia y me reuní con James por adelantado para organizar todo.

Had a wonderful lunch here yesterday, scotch egg was amazing and lamb succulent and delicious. I’m not easily pleased but I had no need to worry as the staff were welcoming and the right amount of attentive. They allowed us to take time to choose our food and to have space between each course. My friends had the whitebait and steak pie, soup and fish cakes all as delicious as mine. Great parking and calm atmosphere. Don’t miss the chance to visit them.

We tried this as we had heard it was quite good. However expensive and distinctly average all round. Trying to upsell from the off is never a good start. Pushing olives bottles of water etc from the start isn't what we expected. We ordered 2 rounds of drinks during the night both times one item was missing. Starters delivered except for one that we had to wait 5 mins for. Starters a mixed bag Camembert and Scotch egg good. White bait over cooked, prawns ok ish. Main course all came out ok. Lamb ,

I asked for pint of alcohol free lager and a packet of crisp and got half a pint and a packet of crisp I was charged £ 5.40 .I queried the price but was told that is the price, at this rate it would be about £8.80 a pint . No wonder pubs are closing.

I bloody love this place. The roast beef was blinding, crispy spuds, chocolate hot pot and vanilla ice cream to die for . Service great, happy all round.

Local pub, thought we would try it. Ordered large Rose and a pint of Timothy Taylor's - £12, bit pricey we thought.........order the same again (no deviation from first order) -£14.50. So questioned this......they tried lots of different order scenarios on fancy till, couldn't come up with either £12 for original order or £14.50 for the second. Came to the conclusion they charge what they feel at the time

Decided at the last moment to go for a meal on a Saturday night. Never let down by the food or service here, staff always friendly and food always spot on. Will be back again very soon.

Quaint surroundings and good quality food if a little bit pricey, only negative was the place had a lot of flies inside with no sign of any electric or other no spraying device to kill them with. That is quite offputting for myself.

We found this brilliant gastropub on the way home after visiting The Vyne national trust property (nr Sherborne) with my parents on Sat 15 June. We were delighted that it turned out to be so wonderful and will definitely be visiting again to sample more of the menu. We had a light lunch so we all chose a starter and then a dessert. The food was divine & the service was perfect (friendly & attentive but not pushy). We rarely tell a waiter to pass on our thanks to the chef but on this occasion it was well deserved - my passion fruit posset in particular may have been the most divine dessert I've ever tasted! I can't believe I didn't know this place existed before now and can't wait to go again and have a full 3 courses next time!

We stopped by at The Iron Duke for lunch recently on our way to family in Surrey. We had a wonderful meal in lovely surroundings and we were so well looked after by James and Matthew. Thank you so much, we will definitely be visiting again. If you haven't tried this pub, you really must, you won't be disappointed!

We were two couples looing for somewhere for lunch after visiting The Vyne which was not too far away. From the outside it is quite bland and is also tucked away so I guess passing trade could be difficult.

I visited The Iron Duke with my elderly mother for lunch and I have to say that the setting, the service and the food were absolutely first class. Travelling out to the somewhat remote spot is just part of the experience. Such a friendly welcome and nothing was too much trouble. We'll be back!

Despite living in the area for 30 years, this was my first visit to the Iron Duke. What a wonderful place! Great menu, superb hosts and lovely quirky decor and signage. Will definitely be returning!

A hidden gem in Berkshire. Aside from the incredible roast beef we enjoyed (gravy from the gods), this pub has one one the most intimate and enchanting beer gardens I can remember. Staff were also equally memorable ,(James especially from memory). I wish more pubs/hotels had this feel about them

Great staff in nice gastro pub with good garden and good food Just one grumble...the cheddar on the cheese board was bland to the point of anonymity. Come on guys, get some decent cheddar instead of something that might have come from Dairylea

Esta fue una visita no planificada y un excelente hallazgo. Era un día de semana tranquilo, pero el hecho de que sirven comida todo el día fue muy agradable ya que llegamos a media tarde. Hay un menú decente con buenos precios. La comida era excelente, recién cocinado y excelente relación calidad-precio. La cerveza (propietario) estaba en excelentes condiciones. Si bien el pub puede estar ligeramente fuera de los caminos trillados, está bien firmado por signos marrones (cómo lo encontramos) y vale la pena un pequeño desvío de la A 33. Ahora sabemos que es allí donde regresaremos cuando estemos en el área.

Had a really nice roast pork dinner. It was very nicely presented and looked very appetising. Everything was cooked well. It was more expensive than other local places but definitely worth it. The staff were very pleasant and approachable.

Muy buen pub gastronómico con mucho encanto. En general, la comida era excelente, aunque me gustaría señalar que pedimos 2 empanadas de pescado, y una tenía mucho más pescado que la otra. No fue el fin del mundo, como compartimos en consecuencia. El budín de pan y mantequilla era increíble! Definitivamente vamos a ir de nuevo.

Lovely setting, great service which was well paced (food quick to come out but no rush for us to leave after we‘d finished). I had the hand made beef burger which was very generous sized and delicious. Staff were lovely. Recommend this place.

Family over we came to this charming pub full of character and history.

We stayed at the Pub a couple of weeks ago, The rooms were fine for our overnight stop. Stairs may be a little difficult for those with mobility issues. The hosts and all staff were very helpful.

We absolutely love the Iron Duke it's our number one choice for Basingstoke and the surrounding area. The standard of food and service is always maintained to a very high standard. We had a table of 12 to celebrate our sons and nephews 18th and 20th birthday respectively. The owners were actually away, however to the credit of the staff they looked after us extremely well in their absence. We look forward to returning again soon.

Excellent Sunday lunch for a family group of 10 to celebrate a significant birthday. Very welcoming and friendly service, good food. Look forward to a return visit sometime.

We had an excellent meal in front of a roaring stove. The staff are attentive and friendly and whole atmosphere is very relaxing.

On my previous visit I thoroughly enjoyed the place and it has met my high expectations again. I visited with a few of my family before Christmas and we all loved the food, drink and service. One of my favourite restaurants in the area and will be back again in the future!

I've just had the most amazing, family friendly meal at the Iron Duke. It was sold as the home away from home experience and it didn't disappoint. My son played with his toys, requested food not on the menu and laid on the floor playing his tablet it the cubby. The food was awesome and the service outstanding. 12 of us went for Christmas lunch with a budget of £35pp. With careful accounting I was able to get 3 courses plus a pint. So it's a tad pricey but the quality and quantity were worth it. It's a great country pub several miles off the nearest main road. Well worth a diversion.

If you are looking for fab food and absolutely perfect service check this country pub. It really is very good.

We really had a lovely time at the Iron Duke, the food was amazing, not only tasted lovely but was presented beautifullly, my friend and I both decided on the bread and butter pudding with ice cream for afters, such a great choice, we followed up with a lovely pot of tea. The lady who was working that evening, was really helpful and friendly, would highly recommend going to the Iron Duke for a fab evening.

We visited the Iron Duke for a quiet lunch. The food was beautifully prepared. I had an excellent beef burger, and my wife had sausages and mash. Mains were good, but the puddings were superb. Reportedly, the bread pudding was the best ever eaten!

Fantastic to see that a year after my initial visit, The Iron Duke still has high standards. The staff were just as welcoming as before, and the food was fantastic! (Your chips were incredible.) The service was great, with very little waiting, and a friendly team always willing to assist.

We held a family lunch at the Iron Duke on Sunday to celebrate my daughter's birthday and her recent engagement. The staff could not have been more welcoming and helpful, the food was excellent, both in quality of the ingredients and in the cooking and the menu choices were spot on too. With family coming from all over (locally plus Devon and Kent), it is a good place for us all to meet up and we will be back! Thank you to everyone who made a special day just that bit more special.

He estado yendo al duque de hierro por más de 7 años. Es el único pub por aquí que hace un domingo Lucnch apropiado. Raciones increíbles, carne de res asada rara y perfecta y todos los adornos, con ataduras de salsa adecuada. Nunca hemos tenido una mala comida allí y el servicio de Matthew, James y su equipo es tan amable que lo convierte en una gran experiencia. Went to the Iron Duke with a group of friends for my birthday. Couldn't fault it. Food was great as always, service was efficient and understated. All round spot on. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

We went as participants in a family birthday/wedding anniversary celebration meal. It was a large group of about 20 with varying special requirements: young children, vegans, gluten-free etc etc.

Stopped here for a light lunch. From the time we entered to our food the welcome was really good and served up with great enthusiasm. The sandwiches were an excellent quality and extremely tasty. We will certainly revisit and have a full meal from the menu that looked very appetising.

I can't believe I've lived in Berkshire for 18 years and have never been to this amazing pub for a meal before. Unbelievable ambience. The place is seeped in history, it feels like your in someone's front room with the host James delightful in every way. Yet there is clearly someone in the kitchen who is very clever with the cooker. I believe this is James partner and co owner. The menu is varied but it seems whatever you fancy within reason is also on the menu if it's in stock. I asked for no mash on my fish pie ( today's special) I was asked what would I put on if I were cooking it and I said any mashed vegetable. Well it was delicious. The garden is also beautifully natural with fruit trees and bushes and three little goats fenced in a field at the bottom of a very peaceful area. Try it yourself. We'll definitely be back. Thank you for our superb welcome and lunch.

Me and a few friends came across this pub/restaurant when looking for somewhere new to eat. Decided to give it a try as the reviews were consistently positive. We were not dissapointed at all! It lived up to its great reviews and you could tell the food was home made and fresh... even down to the berries for dessert being picked in their own garden!

My partner and I stayed at the Iron Duke. The room exceeded our expectations and the view was great to wake up to in the morning. The garden was so nice to sit in with a beer, it was the perfect break from London.

Friendly locals and staff. Extremely helpful as we were lost, once we had been to Stratfield Saye house we returned for a late lunch. Amazing huge fish pie and a beef roast dinner, really delicious food. Atmosphere is like being in ypur own home very comfy and welcoming. We will be back!

Not only did we dine at the Iron Duke, we stayed in the Inn as well. And top to bottom, excellent experience. Customer service as top notch. Food was fantastic and the room was even better than we were expecting. Loved it all!

Living local. Visited twice recently. Just for a drink. But for a meal about year ago. Food average overpriced and salty. OK recent visits. Garden areas very poorly maintained. Furniture requires total replacement. Beer draught lager tastes like the pipes need cleaning. Living local does not make you want to frequent to often. Expensive

Excellent food, the beef wellington was outstandingly moorish, the special of the day chicken pie was fabulous and of a very generous portion. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and the decor was very nice.

Having previously eaten out at the Iron Duke and thoroughly enjoyed it, choosing this location for a party for around 100 family and friends was an easy decision.

First time there in years. Used to be called something else. Anyway, had a family lunch. Very good. Great service. Very welcoming. Very good food at affordable prices. Well cooked and presented. We ate outside in the pub garden so didn't see too much of the inside. Good range of beers. Thought the toilets could do with an upgrade. However, a good pub and would certainly go again.

Happened upon this pub, following the signs from the A33 as it's the midpoint between where my fellow diner & I live. Lovely location, pretty garden, plenty of parking, very warm welcome from the hosts, good food, and directions to a nearby walk along the River Lodden. Would highly recommend.

We live in Bramley and it was our first time to the iron duke !! Didn’t book visited midweek with my husband - he had lamb shank and I had veggie wellington - portions were huge and could tell it was all home cooked food - it was delicious ! Service was excellent and a very friendly hospitable manager ! Not cheap but that is expected ! We will be back :-)

I decided to eat here because I have a Dine card and they offered a 241 main. It's a country pub in a quiet location but the food was excellent. My friend and I both had the fish pie which was delicious. It was packed full of large chunks of juicy fish with a light sauce and topped with perfect mash. We also had the cherry bakewell cheesecake for dessert - another great choice. We were the only people eating but it was a Tuesday evening. I highly recommend the food and the service and I will definitely be back.

Visited here on the recommendation of a friend and it certainly didn't disappoint, lovely place, almost feels like their home, which I love, staff and owners very friendly, food was gorgeous, I had the risotto, many People don't actually know how to make risotto but this place certainly does, OH had the homemade pie which was also delicious, if you are looking for someone to eat as a couple or family this place is a must, I will certainly be visiting again.

I can not express how much I enjoyed the food here and the friendly staff what a great place to be the garden was great with the ice cream van slash bar was fab and the goats was so enjoyable the food was freshly made with all flavours really enjoyed my meal and to be told there was rooms made my day might pop back to with the children this time. And who can forget the beautiful robin that pops in and the chicken roaming in the garden it’s great.

Popped in after seeing signs from the main road. Very friendly staff and locals! Will definitely be popping back in. We need to buy "Purley" a pint after his hip op!

What a pleasant evening. A rural place where four of us had very good meals, all different where we would all have been happy with each others meal. The breads as a starter was lovely. No time pressures, and a convivial host made the whole experience well worth repeating on another day. Not a large venue so suggest booking in advance.
