I used to live in Portsmouth but moved away eight years ago, and I remember coming here a long time ago. We ordered king prawn fried rice, mushroom chow mien and prawn toast. I can say without doubt this was the worst takeaway I have ever had in my life. The king prawn fried rice did not have any egg in it, it was the consistency of rice pudding, no peas, onions or vegetables, just absolutely disgusting stodgy rice with prawns, it was inedible. The chow mein was bland, underseasoned and very unpleasant. The toast was mediocre but edible. I wouldn’t get food from here again if it was the last place on earth, such a huge disappointment.

We went in without great expectations but had an excellent meal. The portions were large and the staff very friendly. I would particularly recommend the hot and sour soup and the house special fried rice. An excellent experience for a very reasonable price.

I reviewed this last year, after they had a makeover, the menu was made smaller (less complicated) plus the food and cleanliness has improved significantly. There is still a microwave on show just outside the kitchen, I have only seen it used for warming plates, but nevertheless I think it should be moved out of sight. The staff turnover seems very quick, I don’t often see the same staff member twice, and ordering takeout /delivery can be very frustrating, because the staff often have vert limited English. However sit down the food is fabulous, my favourite is the salt and pepper chicken, the noodles are also delicious. Satay is nice and spicy, I can’t fault the food. They only have a very limited wine menu so I tend to have a Chinese beer if I want a drink here, this time I tried the set menu for two people, at £28 pounds a head I thought it was a little overpriced, but the amount of food we got could of served 3 people.

Why I Would give this a rating of 1. Only one person front of house! Could not cope with doing all the duties and there was only 3 tables seated! We asked the waiter what the table next to us which were all Chinese had ordered as the meals looked very good to be told it’s a Chinese menu for Chinese people only … imagine if we had said that ..!!!!! Very expensive…. Just under £30 for 1/2 aromatic duck .. Ordered a stir fry chicken with satay sauce - received satay skewers! When questioned was told that stir fry chicken was in fact Satay skewers .. wrong but would not accept as very poor English Do your self a favour & don’t bother from our experience this place changes owners on a weekly basis Ps :-two members of the party were very sick during the night following the meal …??? Can’t comment why .. draw your own conclusions Avoid

I visited on 19 January with a Visually Impaired group after we had had a private tour around an exhibition at 'The Portsmouth City Museum & Art Gallery' just 5 minutes walk away. We had booked in advance & our table was ready for us. The staff were welcoming, the aroma as we walked in was very nice. The seats were comfortable & the table spacious, with plenty of room for guide dogs to lay down & rest. Everything was clean & fresh, including the toilets. There was another big table of diners partway through their lunch & it sounded like they were happy. The prices were obviously higher than a takeaway but that was no surprise. The portion sizes were impressive & our waitress boxed up the leftovers for us to take home. Next time we will share dishes. I'd say four dishes plus a couple of rice's, would stretch to 3-4 people, depending upon your appetite. The food was lovely. The only downside was the long time it took to place & receive our drinks order. The waitress was young, possibly new to the role & I'm sure will pick up with experience. She had very good manners & found out the answers to all of our queries. We enjoyed our lunch & would go back again if we found ourselves in the area.

Had a family meal here recently and starters and mains were good for all 5 of us and staff very friendly and helpful. We asked for a specific dish which wasn't on the main english menu but a similar dish was on the chinese menu which they were happy to cook for us. A little pricey, especially the starters, however decent portion sizes and would go back if in the area again.

We ordered a take away which was delivered. I can quite honestly say it was by far the worst Chinese I have ever tasted!! The chicken balls were over cooked, the batter was too tough to cut, and the chicken was hard and dry. The beef in black bean was chewy and tough. The only thing that was okay was the satay chicken on sticks. Huge disappointment. I will be phoning tomorrow for a refund!

This restaurant has had a decent makeover and it looks much better than before, the location is fantastic on the Portsmouth high street. Food is delicious and portion size is great, my only negative is every now and then you hear the microwave... I investigated and they use it to warm your plates. A new silent microwave or move it to the back of the kitchen should be a plan of action as customers will not return if they think the food is not fresh and re heated, but that aside it’s a good restaurant and I would recommend it.

We had a flyer come around last week and decided to give them a go. We rang up at 7:30 on a Saturday night and ordered Duck to start, then 6 main dishes. They said it would be 30 mins, and it was just ready when we collected at said time. We were given Prawn Crackers and some Spring rolls as an extra. All the food was fantastic and we had good size portions for four people sharing. Only point was that you need to order more pancakes for the duck, as there was lots of meat left and you only comes with six. Cost £55, which compared to the other Restaurants we use in Southsea for takeaway, seemed a bit cheaper. Will be our regular now.

Mine was a duck option that had a really peculiar taste. The whole business needs a shot in the arm ,starting with the broken sign outside. The decor was poor. Nothing suggests it was actually open until you try the door. The area could do with an asian food outlet and this is well placed but needs an overhaul , new chef and staff training. It always seems a shame to have the potential of becoming a successful business but no knowledge as how to succeed.

I was lucky enough to visit this restaurant just after Christmas 2014 with a very good Chinese friend of mine. She introduced us to some amazing dishes from her province and we enjoyed the meal so much we decided to go a few weeks later for my daughter's birthday. We asked for the Chinese menu with English translation and chose some mouth watering dishes. Among them I recommend the spicy fish, which comes in a large bowl with bean sprouts in like a chilli soup - it's absolutely delicious. Also the sizzling beef is good and the dry fried green beans were sooo good we ordered some more! The restaurant was busy and full of Chinese patrons which is a good sign for a Chinese restaurant! The service was also excellent - the 2 waitresses were always on hand without being intrusive and one in particular was very friendly and helpful. Unlike some of the other reviews - we didn't have to wait for drinks and we didn't have to wait long for the food - which really was outstanding. Yes - I agree perhaps the decor is a little tired - but who cares when the food is the best Chinese food we have ever tasted and the service was perfect! Price was very reasonable too. Looking around the place I could see that half the tables were occupied by Chinese patrons, and a lot of the menus were just in Chinese - a good sign. We were not disappointed - the food was really tasty and not boring, with lovely touches that raised it above generic British Chinese cuisine. I loved the Chinese fungus in the 3 in 1 Crystal dish. Restaurant never had our booking despite booking a week earlier. Nevermind, the restaurant was empty so they 'squeezed' us in.no background music, well, no ambiance at all really.its been a few years since being here and it used to be a thriving classy restaurant, now its nothing more special than a chinese tea bar.waiters walking round with t shirt and jeans, one lad even had a back to front baseball cap.fish tank in the entrance needs a clean.only 1 option of rose wine. Now the food, lets start with the menu itself, just a cheap laminated bit of paper, not presented like you would normally have.Ordered a so called platter for 2 and a quart duck to start. Platter was more like a platter for 1, how can you serve a platter for 2 with odd numbers of items? 3 bits of prawn toast... wheres the other bit as last time i checked toast was square and usually comes in 4 pieces. This tells me its not fresh and its just 3 pieces pulled out of a frozen bag. Tasted like it too.for the quarter of duck, looked ok when it came out until you realised its sat on a bed of lettuce and it was more like a quart of pidgeon. Portion sizes compared to price are definately an issue here.then had special fried rice with sweet and sour pork balls and shredded crispy beef which the waitress said can be a mild one if i wanted.it wasn't mild, clearly she forgot or the chef ignored.the rice tasted bland as the meat and veg had been cooked seperately in a sauce instead of mixed in with the rice.To summarise, a backstreet tea bar with over inflates restaurant prices, service less than poor, quality of an iceland buffet box, bland is the one word i would use to describe the entire visit.will i be going back, no, would i recommend, no, almost probably the worst chinese 'restaurant' in hampshire.so disappointing when i think how nice this restaurant used to be.

When we ordered another Tiger beer, they did not have any chilled left...After almost an hour, some food arrived, but this was remixed quickly: wring table .... We had a set menu and some extra dishes. After one of the group asked whether we could have some food, the additional plates we ordered arrived, but no rice. Eventually we had our 8-9 plates and one bowl of rice... not a lot for six and linked to set menu. We asked for some more rice. When the dishes were eaten, the extra rice arrived... The restaurant was not full, but apparently the take away section was busy. You are probably best off ordering take away, as the food is delicious. As soon as we entered, we are faced with the inevitable, the place is very deserted. The kind waitress took our takeaway order and we were told it may take around 10 minutes, most people would have been disappointed but i disagree, it shows that at least they are cooking.. something fresh! we were presented with some free prawn crackers for our wait, which was a nice move since i personally know that other restaurants don't do this. The food was delicious and definitely motivated me to go there again in later future. What i'm trying to get at, is that it is sadly seems very empty and it shouldn't be (whether i caught it on an empty night i don't know but) my only downside is that I walk past this area everyday, it seems to have a fair bit of gunky looking water outside it alot which seems to come from their kitchen or something... not the best of ideas to put it outside the front their restaurant if it is theirs!

I went to this restaurant as part of a large group. I was not disappointed with the food.We had a range of dishes and they were all very good. there was quite a lot of choice and it is nice to try dishes that are away from the normal 4 permutations of chinese curry, sweet and sour, black bean sauce and oyster sauce. We had hot water beef, aubergine, chinese tew and lots more. I thoroughly enjoyed it and found it refreshing. And this was after being spoiled with some excellent french food in St Malo. I recommend you try it.

I saw the reviews on Trip Advisor and decided to pay a visit. On arrival we went to sit down but had to move a couple of dirty chairs that had very bad stains on them. Upon inspection we found a lot of chairs were like this and would benefit from a thorough clean. We were given some prawn crackers but they were soft and not fresh so couldn't eat them. The young waitress was extremely charming. We ordered two starters of a spring roll. Two plates of two spring rolls turned up of enormous proportion. Unfortunately we almost broke our teeth on them as they were rock hard and you needed a knife to try and break through, which was not supplied. The cutlery left a lot to be desired as it was very shabby and tarnished. The main course was good but not great. The one thing that really put us off was that, it was either family or friends hanging around in coats near the Serving area. We had another sitting directly behind us slurping on great chunks of watermelon and playing on an iPod or something that had a game on it. What ever it was, the noise was clear as day and the slurping and sucking was not good to hear as you wanted to eat and try and enjoy the company of your partner. In the end a couple of them were walking around slurping and sucking on these chunks of watermelon!! The people who worked there thought it was ok to walk around in shorts and flip flops whilst the poor waitress who was very charming and well dressed was trying to serve different people and answering the phone whilst they just looked on. A glass of wine, a bottle of water, spring roll starter, chicken dish, beef dish and rice, £40.00. I looked at the whole effect and the general experience and thought, no. I personally would not recommend it. The whole experience was an embarrassment to myself as I had taken my lady for a meal expecting great things because of the rating this restaurant had. They need to look at the atmosphere side of things and not use it as a place where friends and family meet. Someone standing watching you eat whilst chewing gum and wearing an overcoat isn't great for a romantic meal. It was uncomfortable and not a place to relax in at all. If you do go there then make sure you sit at the bottom end away from the main door which is permanently open and it's where friends or family sit playing on there phones and take care of there own personal calls. The view unfortunately from inside out faces onto some pretty awful looking derelict houses with trash outside. Overall, it's definitely not scenic, no romantic atmosphere of any kind. Sadly I wouldn't recommend it.

The food was very good indeed. We took advantage of the set menu as there were seven of us and the food was plentiful enough for us to take several punnets home with us. Service was ok, nothing special but perfectly competent.Decor and general atmosphere seemed a bit tired but overall we had a very enjoyable evening.

As a pub / restaurant owner I believe that Trip Advisor should be used to review a place for good or bad, not just bad. So after visiting Good Fortune tonight I just had to write a review! As soon as we walked through the door a lady rushed over to greet us and sat us at our table with menus. We ordered wine and it was brought to us and poured for us in true restaurant style, the young lady even came over and topped up our glasses as she passed the table, but at no time did we feel 'pestered' or 'pushed' to drink quicker or buy more wine. The house dry white was very nice and very reasonably priced, but there was a good choice of other wines including a nice New Zealand Sauvignon that I've had before! The menu was extensive and a little overwhelming to start, but we were given all the time we needed and the food was excellent when it arrived. They have tapas to share and my friend and I had one each as a starter. Beware! They are easily big enough to share lol! Very lovely food! The restaurant itself is a little basic for Old Portsmouth, but the quality of food and service distracts you from initial thought on interior decor, and the place was clean. I have to disagree with a previous comment about lack of atmosphere. It made for a very relaxed atmosphere, and I truly believe when you are out with your friends / family you create your own atmosphere at your table.I don't get back to Portsmouth often enough, so when I do my friend and I take a long time deciding where to eat. We definitely made a good choice here and as it's my birthday this week, I feel like I've had a real birthday treat (I'm still full 5 hours later and we both have a doggy bag! There's also some good pubs very close so a good area to choose!Tonight reminded me why I love Portsmouth so much, would highly recommend!

We went for a meal with friends on a Saturday night. Great food and very reasonably priced, we had the Thai. Loads of choice you can have Thai, Malaysian and or Chinese. The downside was that place had no atmosphere, & we were the last ones in there by 9pm!Lower lighting & more authentic music would improve it as the food is highly recommended.

All the kinds of foods in this restaurant are very delicious. The food are mainly focus on the Hunan cuisine, but it also has the other kinds of cuisine, like Thai, Singapore, HONG KONG and so on. the more important is that the chief will try their best to cook the taste dishes you want. Their service is very intimate, NO.1。

Was in the mood for a Chinese meal tonight so tried here and was not disappointed. We got a very pleasant welcome as soon as we walked in and we looked after very well. The food was really very good with the ribs being excellent. The atmosphere was good even though the place was quiet with only two other tables in use ,but both by Chinese customers which I would take to be a good sign. All in all a good evening.

Good and traditional Chinese food. Particularly, if you like spicy food that is the best choice. You can enjoy delicious Chinese Hunan style and hk style food there.

Took a punt on this place based on other reviews after our regular restaurant slipped. So 5 men say just give us a good selection of starter dishes to get us started, impress us. And all the waitress wanted to do was get us to pick the £20 set menu. Considering we would be happy to spend £50 or more each I thought they would be happier to let us select from the menu. And on the menu, it is too busy. Too much going and and not helpful for the undecided and indecisive. Tiger beer was OK but it needs to be colder but the wine was good even if we had to ask for a cooler for the white. Final gripe was they said they cannot do Irish coffee, what's that all about. Like I said at the beginning great food but sloppy service lets the chef down. And it baffles me why this placed was half empty on a Saturday before Xmas. Won't rush back but would he OK if I ended up here again.

We were greeted by friendly staff and a nice atmosphere. The restaurant offers an entire range of Oriental dishes. So we decided to order both Chinese and Thai. The "crispy duck and pancakes" were delicious. The "pad thai" we're used to is usually served with a peanut-type sauce. This one was served with a sweet-and-sour sauce that tasted like it could've been bought at a local Tesco. It was an overall GOOD experience.

I have heard a lot about this restaurant for many years all positive so when a friend offered to take me to lunch I thought a would take advantage of his offer. The service was not as slick as the hype. The experience did not live up to the 5 star price tag and the food was as good as some Albert Road noodle bars that charge half the price. To say the whole experience was a let down is putting it mildly. I would suggest its a case of the emperors trousers the people who rave about it have obviously not eaten out side of Portsmouth.

My wife and I ate here for her birthday. Being Chinese she has to have noodles on her birthday, it's a traditional Chinese thing. She can also be very critical of the food we British like to think is Chinese. My wife was pleasantly surprised by the food, having only small criticisms about one or two of the ingredients in some of the dishes. The food may not be as good as you get in Beijing, but for the UK, where some ingredients can be impossible to get fresh I'd say they do a fantastic job.The new owners took over about a year ago and have introduced a more traditional Chinese menu as well as keeping the old 'western style' Chinese menu.If pigs intestines, tripe and ears puts you off then you may want to stick with the more 'western' style Chinese menu. But if like me you enjoy real Chinese food, ensure you order at least one dish off the Chinese menu. The staff are extremely friendly and will advise you on what the dishes are like.

Where to start? Starter cold and had to return. Everything just tasted of nothing. Ordered duck which was so pale in colour it was nearly white. If I had closed my eyes before putting the food into my mouth, I would have struggled to identify it. Very attentive staff but to the point of different waitresses asking the same question. Oh and they stood right by us and watched us eat. Paper table cloth (I hate those) also it ripped when I moved my plate. Plates not preheated. Coke did not arrive with ice or lemon or was it offered. Interior looked tired. Boxes in doorway. Magazines on top of boxes that had been there for months. When I complained that the starter was cold as soon as they were brought back to the kitchen a huge scream was heard. Poor chef. ..... Poor restaurant.

We were staying in the Duke of Buckingham pub across the road but their restaurant was closed on the Friday so decided to visit this chinese restaurant. Absolutely fantastic food decided on the £17 a head feast for 6 of us starters included, seaweed, sesame prawn toast, small pancake rolls, curry triangle puffs, followed by shredded lamb and shredded duck with pancakes, followed by ginger chicken, chicken satay sticks and sticky ribs, we thought this was it until they brought out the main meal dishes, sweet and sour chicken, chow mein, fried rice, shredded beef, beef in a black bean sauce, chicken with cashew nuts, king prawns in vegetables, we have never had such sheer volume of food but the amazing thing was every dish tasted divine, the staff were polite and the surroundings of the restaurant clean and pleasant, really worth a visit

Went to this restaurant last night with high hopes after the previous reviews, but left feeling disappointed .House wine horrible ,Chinese tea ok.We ordered scallops from the special menu salted squid & chicken satay for starters. All three were wonderful & very well cooked tasty & different this is where it ends. For main coarse we ordered chicken in plum sauce and Kung po chilli prawns with boiled, both were below average dried chilli flakes used instead of fresh, lots of veg & not much prawns &chicken I would rather have quality not quantity. Also ladies toilet a lot to be desired which makes make think what is the kitchen like. The most annoying thing was one of the waitresses kept trying to plug the Real Chinese menu & would not leave us alone. Will not be going back again.

We ordered a large banquet meal delivery for our New Year's Eve supper and were really impressed with both the food and the service. The banquet selection was varied - 9 dishes plus plenty of crackers - with something to suit everyone (duck, chicken, pork, beef, prawn.....). The menu stated for 6-8 people but fed 9 very comfortably. Delivery was prompt and the food still hot. A great banquet and perfect way to celebrate the New Year.

Visited this restaurant after reading the reviews on here, we were not to be disappointed, this restaurant has anumber of menus on the go, but predominantly it has "the usual western type chinese menu" and a Chinese menu...please take the advice of the wonderful waiting staff, the translation on the Chinese menu does not do the food justice, ask them if anything takes your fancy - you will not be disappointed..We had a number of starters, seaweed, salt and pepper ribs, chicken satay and deep fried chicken wings, portions were HUGE...the quality was though equally huge!...everything was perfect..for the mains I had a chicken curry complete with mushrooms peas and onion very nice, my wife being more adventurous went native and hit the Chinese menu she had something that translated as "Frog in a pot" - this was in fact a steel heated bowl with a large number of fried marinated frogs legs with onions chilli and a hot sauce..she loved it...we had noodles to accompany it all...again portions were massive - we could have had half what we had and it would have still been too much - bear this in mind when ordering...The staff are very friendly always checking everything is alright - prices very reasonable for the quality and quantity. We will definitely be back on our next visit to Pompey

After reading the reviews I was really excited about eating here however I would say it is probably with worst restaurant in Portsmouth. I went with my mum on a Friday night, restaurant was reasonably quiet with only a few families and a table of 8. My mum and I had to wait 1.5 hours for our food , expecting something magnificent to come out and instead it was cold, watering and to add more insult hair in our food. We complained and they knocked 10% of our bill – only the food of course. Would not go again even if it was free , I think I would prefer a MacDonald’s!

This Restaurant is definitely on our list to visit and we will use the take away delivery service again. If you live in Portsmouth and want good Chinese Thai or Malay food, this place should be on your list.

Ordered through uber eats. Food was awful. Inedible, so sweet. My chilli chicken just tasted of sugar. The sweet and sour chicken balls were also so sweet. Every other dish just tasted like the chef got sugar and salt confused. The duck hardly had any meat on it. Most expensive Chinese I have had around Portsmouth and 90% of it when in the bin. Then it came to a couple hours later and my wife has stomach ache and spends the rest of the night on the toilet. Uber eats customer service was awful fixing the issue aswell. Saying that the food is made to speck so no refund allowed. Didn’t realise their speck is food poisoning and sugar overdose. Stay well away from this place
