The Akash in Portsmouth

We went as a group of nine for a family birthday, pre booking a week in advance. I enjoyed the food, but the service was so unorganised it really impacted the night. Frequently chasing missing drinks, missing food and wrong orders. At the end of the night they even tried to charge us twice! I can’t knock the food itself or the prices, but it was just clumsy throughout the whole meal. The tandoori chicken biryani was really good, when it finally came, complimented by a vegetable curry and basmati rice. I didn’t rate the garlic naan, it was too bland and uninspiring, needed more seasoning.

Went for lamb chops which they dont have on the menu. Was suggested to try their mix grill which i opted for but without the tandori chicken. Was so disappointed!! Chicken tikka tasted like boiled unseasoned chicken, sheikh kebab tasteless and the lamb tikka again tasteless. The side - bombay potatoes unseasoned. Told the order taker whose response was 'its a mixed grill' who happens to be the head chef! Asked for some mint sauce. Added a little flavour. Left the food, table was cleared by waitress who said 'you've left quite a bit' told her food wasnt good. Received a bill of £40.05. Paid the bill went to another restaurant further down the road. Usual gent who works the restaurant wasnt in. This chap definitely belongs somewhere other than customer facing and if that is his recipe definitely needs reviewing. Dr Nick

was served a very flat cider that was not taken off the bill. and it was extremely warm in the restaurant but food was amazing, service was really quick, and very reasonably priced so I would recommend .

Ordered a chicken korma. Quite possible the worst korma I’ve ever had, the sauce itself was fine but the chicken was so chewy and dry, it tasted like I was eating a rubber tire. Not over exaggerating!! I called them up regarding the issue and nothing was sorted.

BIRTHDAY PARTY 🎈🍛welcoming friendly & helpful Nice atmosphere, hot and spicy just the way i like it but had great options for medium and mild curries great service group of 15 of us for a birthday and no problems or issues waiter rufik was really attentive and friendly and happy offered to take group photo when seeing us try to get one and suggesting meals on menu and offering drinks through out the meal but not too over often which you find in a lot of places when bringing out the cake we saw the FA Cup and the Olympic torch was a great touch, made a nice effort and amazing end to evening - will definitely visit again we came from hayling island as a friend recommended and was defo worth the lil car journey thank you so much defiantly be back!

Ordered Tandoori chicken biriani and a Chicken tikka biriani for home delivery. Arrived just warm. Both were grossly over seasoned with salt. Disappointed with these both run of the mill recipe versions.

Cons; Rushed service. The main course came to our table while we were still halfway through our starter. That’s a big No no no. I had king prawn biryani without the king prawns - well I found one! The place need a refurb, or at least a lick of paint. Pros: The food was tasty

A massive disappointment all around. We were a group of 5 and had heard great things. Restaurant was buzzing when we arrived so had to wait 20 minutes for our pre booked table; no worries as very busy manager did his best and gave us a free delivery drink. The huge let down was the quality of the food. Bland would be an understatement. Possibly there had been an issue in the kitchen as the food was simply dreadful. Everyone in our party was literally shocked how dull every dish was. It was as if the kitchen staff had gone home and everything came straight out of a cooking sauce jar; simply appalling. If the owners read this, they must have known that something was wrong on Friday 2 February. I can't believe this place is anywhere than the bottom 10 of however many restaurants that there are in Portsmouth. Just awful.

Visiting Portsmouth for a concert at the nearby Wedgewood Rooms and we were recommended this popuar Restaurant beforehand. Am very glad of the recommendation as the quality of the meal was superb. Friendly staff, and nice surroundings. It was relatively early but already the Restaurant was very busy but we were served quickly and drinks and papadoms arrived promptly. The meal itself was amazing quality. I chose the Chicken Madras and the meat was very tender and the sauce was excellently spiced with just the right amount of heat. Served with Pea Pilau, which wasnt on the menu but they made for me, along with a lovely Bombay Aloo. My wife went for a Lamb Shashlik with a Peschwari Nan and the lamb was very tender with a lovely spice. We do eat at a lot of Indian Restaurants but I can honestly say this was one of the best I have had in a long time. We cleared our plates and enjoyed another drink before leaving for our concert. I wish we lived closer to this Restaurant to enjoy it on a more regular basis. Would definitely recommend the Akash and will return if ever in the area again....

The food is great, my boyfriend had a fish and it was DELICIOUS. and the portion was really big. I had butter chicken which was also great, but I fell in love with the masala chai. The service is beyond amazing, the staff are so so nice and friendly, and it’s the people that make you want to come back

Best curry house in Portsmouth! My Dad and I came for dinner. The food was beautiful, I had a Vindaloo and it was perfection. The Keema Nan was also the best I've ever tasted. Great service and the food came out quickly. Would be even better if they could offer a Tindaloo or Phall on their menu!

Food was pretty average in terms of flavours and portion size. Good value as Balti dishes came with a nan. Service was great.

While fine if you go to the restaurant itself, do noted order a delivery. Order placed 80 minutes ago and still waiting! When we called we got the usual "it's on its way" rubbish twice so far.

Very good food (coming from a Punjabi man) - the tandoori chicken starter was arguably the best tandoori chicken I've ever had with both flavour and tenderness. Staff were brilliant and so friendly - was served by Rafti. I asked for a Mango Lassi which was off the menu and they made it specially for me which i thought was brilliant.

Never been charged for pickles for the poppadoms before. I am veggie ordered a veg jalfrazi. Got a chicken one Had to wait 25 mins for correct order

Loved the food from Akash, though I'm dissapointed in my last visit as the Papadom's were old and stale and the drinks were old as well, no fizz and that was annoying since they charge so much for a small drink. The food is 10/10, especially for take-away/delivery, but the dinening experience could be improved.

hi I like indian food, tasted it all over the world, new delhi, katmandu, nepalgung, dhaka, london, deventer, paris, boston, so I do have a bit of an idea whats ok. This place is nice! Great service, friendly owners but most of all they want to make you feel comfortable. So please visit them and thank them from me to show my girls to bake naan bread.

Same old akash that I came to 40 plus years ago helpful friendly But closes at 1130 I've been there at 4 or 5 in the morning what's going on

Great food, decent service but our waiter was useless. Took him several times to get the order correct (only 4 people) and we still ended up with a rice we didn't order. Also, we tried to give a tip, but the last person to pay was charged £16, rather than the £32 we said we'd all pay.

Really bad service, couldn’t get the orders right, then when they brought the curry my dad actually asked for in the first place, it was rubbish

Got a chance to try this Indian restaurant. The staff and the manager were very friendly and humble. We ordered chicken tikka and stuffed paratha. Food was great. Service was quick.

The atmosphere is good. But I didn't like the food. I felt it was slightly spoiled and smelled. The manager said he would change it but I couldn't stay any longer. The roti was good. The rice item was a problem for me. Since we didn't eat the manager said we can go and we didn't have to pay any. That was a nice gesture from the manager. But since the food can be a lot better and they have to take care of the food, I am giving it a 3 star.

Fabulous Indian restaurant on Albert Road. The staff are really friendly and helpful, and the food tasted amazing. One of the oldest Indian Restaurants in the country and they sure know what they're doing. It is a bit o the price-y side, however, but it's well worth it. The Tindaloo I had tasted amazing, but it's not for those that don't like spice!

Food took ages to arrive and when it did, the garlic chips were stale, so were the poppadoms. Bhuna was tasteless. Overall, very disappointing. Won't be using again.

I love the Akash for eating in and have had many lovely meals there but really disappointed with our takeaway service this evening. Ordered on just eat, not sure if it had something to do with the issues but waited 1 hour 40 mins, phoned the restaurant, they said they had no ticket for order and would be approx 20 mins. Waited another hour, food arrived lukewarm, soggy poppadoms and really below standard. For a Tuesday night expect more. Will not be ordering again.

I had the Prawn Biyrani it was so delicious and flavorful,came with a curry side dish which was also delicious. The Naan was so soft and tasty,it complented the curry so well. The samosas are 🔥🔥🔥 best I had in Portsmouth. Service delivery was okay as well,the music was also good too. Highly recommend.

Turned up a little early for our table, but was seated fine, which was a good start. Waiter forgot my drink. After 15 minutes of everyone else having recibed theirs, I was told the drink I ordered wasn't available, so I ordered another. 15 minutes later, I asked another waiter for my drink, and it arrived after 5 minutes, so 35 minutes from seating to getting a drink. So that was an issue. The food was great, but it did take quite a while to get to us. And then one was missing. Not mine this time, and thus was resolved fairly quickly.

My friend and I visited the Akash restaurant on sat 11th March We wanted a meal before visiting the kings theatre . We had a good table the customer service was very good . And the food arrived promptly it tasted good and was hot We thought the price for a bt of wine was very reasonably . Would defo visit again I would recommend it to friends n family .

I took a chicken beryani for dinner. The chicken was well cooked, but the beryani rice was not that tasty.

The best Indian food I've ever eaten. It was spiced and seasoned to perfection. Just the right balance, which is very hard to find - many Indian restaurants just don't get it right. Large portions and the staff were amazing, gave us a discount when we hadn't asked which they didn't have to do at all. I cannot wait to go back.

Really disappointed We normally ordering from Baffins curry place Unfortunately they was closed First time ordered they charged me more then they said on the phone Curry was a water so I had to cook it No papadoms and the tiniest nan I ever seen yet £10 more then in our local For sure never again

I usually never give negative reviews, however this place changed my mind. First of all, the way they treat the customers is very bad - I was not even offered to sit since I ordered 'take away'. Couple of people who work there are rude and does not know how to talk to different age groups. To top it off, the food on the other hand was so bland and not flavourful. Will stay away from this place!

Visited with family on a Friday evening to celebrate a birthday. One of our favourite places to eat for many years - excellent standard always.

Booked table for 16 and were not able to seat us at time selected. Very popular maybe but not hot on table reservations 1 hour later and so far... some poppadoms... but still waiting for ordered starters..... deliveroo and just eats getting theirs though!!!! 1 hour 40min and still no food!!! 2 hours since original booking, starters arrived (yay?). 2200 and still waiting for mains.... 2215 and mains arrived hardly worth the wait! Chicken overcooked, massala was just BRIGHT red! Pillar rice, bright Orange? Heard lots about how good this place was, not tonight. Waitress spilt curry down two customers jackets and looked crowd when pointed out!! AVOID is my recommendation, There are lots of curry houses that MUST be better than this. Complacency is the key word to describe this establishment. Sorry, but I won't be back or give a recommendation to visit

Ours food was delivered. Read reviews before and was sounds good. But then I opened I was disappointed. We ordered chicken jalfarezi and roghan prawns The sauces were nearly identical with the special being slightly sweeter and only few prawns. No hot at all. Saag aloo wow no spinach but coriander instead. So disappointed

Attended the 44th Anniversary Celebration event here a week ago! Amazing food, fun atmosphere and attentive service!

Placed order to be delivered the delivery man called me 4times but my phone was in a different room when he called again to redeliver he couldn't even find my address yet he'd allegedly already been here. His English on the phone was disgraceful considering he's dealing with the public. The alleged manager didn't resolve to my certification order was eventually after 1-hour and 30-minutes cancelled. I don't know if the foods any good as it never arrived (what a joke). Manager asked me that when I call again to ask for him I said don't worry I won't be calling again trust me. No stars if I could.

Had heard about this place through news reports of awards etc, so came with high expectations. Poppadoms were overcooked, almost burnt so the taste was bitter. Curry was ok, lamb a bit over cooked but tasty.. an average curry house, certainly not the best in Portsmouth, but not the worst either.

Best curry house on the South Coast. Used for many years. For the best experience Eat in - however take away is still always spot on. Staff are always friendly, welcoming and attentive.

Been coming here for years and it hasn't changed a bit, in a good way. Superb curry and welcoming of all crowds. It's popular for an after beer curry so if you're a family get there a bit earlier.
