We did a hike in the area and called into the Fox for lunch and a pint. The pub exterior looked a bit tired so our expectations weren't high, However, as soon as we entered the pub and were met with a friendly welcome things started to look up. Like a previous reviewer we had the tuna sandwich and the steak burger with Stilton but our experience was far more positive. The food was simple but very tasty, especially the chunky chips. Likewise the beer was well kept and very refreshing after a long walk. There was a large group of ramblers in the pub who had clearly arranged to park in the pub car park before doing their walk. They all appeared to be enjoying their post walk food & drinks too.

Went for a Saturday lunch with my wife. I had tuna sandwich on granary, which to their credit was really nice, hence the two stars. My wife’s burger was horrible, really cheap, floured soggy bun and a slab of cold Stilton on it. She left most of it. Shame, this used to be a lovely spot.

As good as always. The mussels were lovely to start with but the sea bass was sublime. A generous portion and beautifully cooked with lovely fondant potatoes and extra fries ... yum ... sadly the cheeseboard wasn't available.

The food was not well presented, over cooked and expensive for what it was. Small portions. Won't be coming back or recommend, sad as many pubs are closing. Could be so much better.

Really sad to be writing this in light that many pubs are closing. Our meal was really poor. Very expensive starters which were over cooked. Plate of Nachos was a side plate of flat nachos with creme fraiche and salsa. Not typically heaped up to the plate where you can't eat it all. Mains - average - vegetables were soggy. Such a shame. Oh I forgot the presence of dogs. A couple sniffing around our table - kept barking. Not a relaxing experience.

Came here for a last minute Sunday roast. Staff weren’t exactly welcoming, service seemed slightly cold. Ordered 1 beef and 1 gammon, waited a while for food to arrive. But they did have a large table in, so were happy to wait. Good atmosphere from surrounding tables. When food did arrive plates and food were Luke warm. Portions extremely small, looked like a child’s meal. All I can say is “I think aunt Bessie cooked our lunch” Beef was so tough, was inedible. Broccoli over cooked, gravy the consistency of custard. Gammon was actually okay, but cold. Waitress asked if our food was okay, we explained about the beef. She asked if their was anything she could do to which we declined. She knew the beef was over cooked. All we could do was laugh. Absolutely terrible roast and will not be going back.

Scruffy country pub. No toilet paper in ladies loo 30 minutes after opening. Mens loo grim. White wine served in small bottles like you get on an aeroplane. Pub dogs barking incessantly through meal. Landlady or lady serving us playing with dogs and 10 seconds later serving our food - no way she washed her hands. Sticky tables - placemats and glasses sticking to surface. Grim food.

We had been disappointed at the Jolly Farmer and decided to go back to the Fox at Ellisfield which has never let us down. And it did not this time either. The lady taking our order was chatty and friendly, there was plenty on the menu for us both (we're vegetarian/vegan). We sat in the garden which is next to a quiet road and overlooks a large field. We enjoyed chatting with other customers and watching the pheasants opposite us in the field and the gliders above us circling around. Tranquil. The food was great. The chips and the onion rings could not have been better (decadently naughty - but we had just done a ten mile walk). The spicy veggie burger was good. The puddings can only be described as 'mmmm'. Lovely. We will be back.

Tricky pub to set up social distancing but they managed an excellent service with a good tasty pub menu. This is not a Gastro pub but you won't go hungry. We often visit this cosy village pub on a Sunday for lunch (as we did today) and have either had the roast or a sandwich or jacket potato. Always received a warm welcome there as they have very friendly staff and we have been happy with the service and more than happy with the food, which arrives piping hot; unless having a sandwich of course! Travelled from Basingstoke to visit - just 15mins to this country pub along narrow country roads. Food piping hot and served by very nice polite staff. Not a big pub but menu enough to satisfy most tastes. Liked the idea that they provide a small meal menu for those who could not manage the large portions provided. Car parking could be an issue if busy - not much option if parking is full, not sure how this could be improved due to location.

We were up at sparrow's fart last Sunday to walk the dog and get to Hillside car boot for 7. so by 10 a.m. we were hungry, thirsty and very glad to have made a booking at The Fox. After a lovely friendly welcome, we settled down and ordered the full English and coffees. Very nice sausages, smoked bacon, baked beans, saute potatoes and a plate of hot buttered toast made for a very substantial meal and we didn't eat again until a light supper that evening. The location (Green Lane, Ellisfield, Basingstoke) is lovely - I don't know the area well enough to know if it could be part of a long walk but it seems ideally suited for a stop on a cycle ride.Summary: lovely staff, delicious food, we'll be back!

We hadn't visited this pub for a while as it has had a succession of new owners over the past few years so thought we would give it a go again. It was friendly enough and had a nice ambiance about it. The beer was well kept and the place itself nice inside which made it even more disappointing when we were served an adequate but unimaginative couple of meals which did not compare well for quality or value to other pubs in the area.

Our monthly walk organised by one of the group meant starting at the Fox and returning for lunch at the halfway point. The car park wasn't large so to help we did a bit of double parking when we arrived at 9.30. The landlady made the toilets available to the group before we all set off on our trek. Lunch had been pre-booked and when we got back to the pub a table had been laid out for our group of 13. Food didn't take long to arrive. Quality was very good, I had the fishermans pie which was filling. For those of us who had chosen from a specials menu also had the luxury of a free dessert, this caused a bit of unrest in the camp!! Beer was good, Doom Bar and Wadsworth 6X, I think someone had the lager. Service was really good and the staff were really friendly. If you are in the area its worth a visit. We then went off on the second part of our wals to return 3 hours later and drive home shattered.

We were after somewhere new to enjoy our Sunday breakfast and The Fox did not disappoint. The food was clearly cooked fresh and was delicious. Reasonably priced too with a full English costing £6.50 although extras such as mushrooms or black pudding were 50p each. The pub had more of a cafe atmosphere about it with cosy seating areas and was warm and inviting. My only criticism would be that the 'American style pancakes' were just regular scotch pancakes. I'd be every surprised if they were made fresh rather than out of a packet. Nevertheless, everything else was delicious and we look forward to returning!

Good quality pub grub. Came here based on the reviews and it did not disappoint. We shared three starters, all well cooked and then the main courses were excellent, though large. My sons shepherds pie was very well flavoured, as was the hunter's chicken and lasagna. My steak was closer to rare rather than the medium rare I asked for but still taste good and the chips were impressive - crisp out and fluffy inner. Desserts were lovely - the bread & butter pudding stood out for me & the custard was silky and luscious.

Returning to Ellisfield to visit my mother for a couple of weeks, I decided to take her out to dinner and invite my aunt and uncle along as well. I was very surprised to hear that they wanted to go to the village pub, where despite both being born in the village in excess of 75 years ago, they haven't set foot for decades. Word of mouth amongst friends regarding the quality of food now tempted my mother.Visiting the pub with a local friend one evening, I booked a table with the barman (who was new) for the following Monday lunchtime. A few moments later "Lucy", the licensee, emerged from the kitchen only to inform us that she was normally shut on a Monday lunchtime (a fact the new barman had missed). However, it was no problem as she would open just for us to avoid disappointment. When we arrived on the Monday lunchtime the pub was open as promised. We were made to feel very welcome and enjoyed a fantastic lunch. All four of us commented on the presentation and quality of food. The fact that smaller meal sizes were available was an added bonus with my elderly family members, who now find it hard to finish large meals. We really enjoyed our food and I cannot fault the value for money. The total price was extremely competitive in my opinion. Lucy's attitude and enthusiasm to make a success of the place is obvious. Consequently, I would highly recommend you give it a try with an open mind. We'll be back Lucy!!

Enjoyed our Roasts. Excellent meats, pig in blankets and nice gravy.4 stars only as the veggies were help your self style rather than put on the plate for you...The bill also just had the final amount on it, and was not itemised in anyway even though the group all had different mains and drinks. They could have plucked that figure out of the air for all we knew...Overall very nice and cosy although the fire wasn't lit :(

Visited here Sunday with my family and was not disappointed. We all opted for the traditional roast which was delicious. Choice of three meats and all the trimmings. Friendly staff and great banter between the locals. We look forward to our next visit, when hopefully the open log fires will be roaring.

Were treated very rudely and the food was very poor . Convenience store ingredients with a packet of dorritos on the side . Felt like we were a hindrance rather than customers . We live locally and we will definitely not be going back . Shabby way to run a country pub .

A lovely building - and a pleasure to be inside. So much effort has gone into making it feel like an individual pub. Excellent home cooking. The steak pie was just that, and not a little casserole with a puff pastry lid; proper shortcrust pastry crammed full with meat. Good vegetables too. Choice of 3 good real ales. Warm welcome. What more could I want?!

Went for an evening Sunday meal. Nice welcome. Some of the things on the menu were a little over priced. But not to bad. We had two chicken roasts and our son had fish fingers and chips and peas. All very nice. Only negatives was the chicken was not half a chicken but a chicken breast, although it wasn't dry and was nice. The Yorkshires where small and the ready made frozen kind. Home made would be nice. But can't really complain as the meals were lovely. The pub is a very charming olde style pub. A nice garden with a bouncy castle for the kids. They also had a bbq on the evening we were there. A band was playing also. A good country community pub. A very enjoyable evening.

After many years of saying that we must visit the fox, my husband and I finally did so last Saturday lunchtime for drinks. We had already booked an evening meal at a nearby pub for our anniversary meal but when I saw a 'proper vegetarian' pie on the menu I wished that we hadn't booked elsewhere. I did not eat but my husband enjoyed a brie and bacon sandwich with a salad and tortilla chip accompaniment .Very friendly with a very helpful landlady who obviously takes pride in this lovely pub. Will revisit asap for that vegetarian pie. What a pity other pubs and even restaurants cannot realise that vegetarians deserve 'proper' food and not pasta bakes and that many do not like goat's cheese.

The Fox inn at Ellisfield HampshireThe Fox at Ellisfield is a quiet quaint English country pub situated on a quiet country road Off of the Basingstoke to Alton road (A339)A very friendly pub mostly used by locals, but visitors are always made welcome by locals and the staff. Please ignore previous bad reviews before 2015 as the pub has changed hands and the current people running the pub are nothing like the previous tenants. At present the pub is only open Tuesday to Sunday 12 midday until 10pm closed Mondays. although service outside these hours could be available for groups and functions. The menu is varied and is cooked by Lucy the landlady most of the time and she does a small plate menu for light eaters at lunchtime. (£6)Drinks on offer are extensive and served with a smile from the bar staff. A good selection of wines are stocked here and the beers are Doombar and 6X plus Strongbow cider Guinness and a few lagers. There is a lovely garden here with seats and a decked area, and as the road is little used it is very peaceful. Food can be served alfresco. So all in all a lovely little country pub in the heart of the countryside, with good food and good ale and even nicer staff, well worth a visit if you are in the area, summer or winter. Log fires are nice and cosy in the colder months. If you find this review even a little helpful either before or after your visit please tick the helpful box.

I booked this pub as it is on the Basingstoke Half Marathon route. I always feel a bit jealous of the customers enjoying themselves as I slog up the endless hill. When we arrived we were the only people in the pub. The landlord was quick to appear and busied himself getting our drinks. He opened a tab for us (without requiring me to leave my credit card behind the bar) and directed us to our table in a well lit but still cosy alcove. The menu does not give detailed descriptions but the waitress (landlady?) was happy to describe the items for us.We all ordered the mushroom soup. One word. Amazing. Actual pieces of mushroom and a 'warm crusty roll' that really was warm and crusty. My mother and I ordered the vegetable lasagne, good chunky bits of veg, hot all the way through and marvellous chunky chips. My parents were both keen to have puddings but were worried they would be too big. The waitress, after describing the puddings offered to make two smaller sundaes and only charge us for one.The atmosphere was relaxed with people coming in to order food and then going off to sit in the garden. Several dogs and walkers and cyclists came and went.I watched the landlord deal with an issue over some food very fairly and politely.Overall a great lunch. We will be back.

I visited this pub half way round on a country walk. It's perfect if you've got muddy boots and is a proper English country pub. I had the Plougmans which was nice, my friend had the giant burger which looked fantastic. My only gripe would be the pickled onions tasted funny, as if they were years old. However apart from that everything was lovely. We had a good shandy too

Excellent food; good choices; all freshly cooked and really quick service; portions were huge and are really good value so come hungry! What is there not to like? Leave space for the excellent puddings - again big portions - toffee and apple crumble with custard to die for! Lovely setting and although we weren't walkers we can see why The Fox would be an excellent place to stop for lunch. I'm sure we'll be back.

We stayed at the Woolpack while in the area for a friends wedding. Lizzie was a fabulous waitress - checking in and making sure we were well looked after. New menu items such as the linguine were delicious and the burger was especially standout. Thank you team for a great stay
