The Duke of Wellington in Guildford

Disappointed with our visit to this pub/restaurant, only popped in for a quick bite, ordered a sandwich and a fish brioche with a portion of chips, the sandwich was tasteless the bread not the freshest, the brioche was underwhelming the chips didn't come with the meal and we had finished our sandwiches by the time the chips arrived, and for £23.50 it really wasn't value for money, perhaps we caught them on a bad day..

Lovely pub, food good but not great (Sunday roast beef excellent, veg well cooked, Yorkshire pud tough, sordough with starter so dry it crumbled on touch). The service was very disorganised. Waited ages for starters then forever for mains. Even had mains placed on table then promptly whisked away for the adjacent table, seated after us. We were not the only diners frustrated with timings. Felt sorry for the server who took our payment whilst offering an unprompted apology for the wait, she seemed quite stressed. Clearly a popular place but a disappointing experience.

Fantastic roast beef Sunday dinner in a lovely old pub. The young staff were amazing and made me very comfortable and welcome . I will be coming back soon for a Christmas lunch .

A historic pub a nice interior. The food was nice but not exceptional and certainly overpriced. The service was average a smile would not have got amiss

Was a bit of a long wait but the food was lovely and because of the wait we was refunded for the main will definitely be back next week

To be honest, I have been here a few times before and it’s been okay for tonight. I arrived at 6:45 it took half an hour for our drinks to turn up at the table and a further hour and 45 minutes to get our main course. The salad which should’ve been covered in pinenuts and balsamic vinegar was literally a handful of green and nothing else. All the tables around us arguing with the manager asking why the meals have taken two hours and we were told there’s only five members of staff to cover roughly 100 customers. If I’ve been told I may of decided not to order food, but we were kept in the dark. We did get £60 off the final bill, but that did not make up for the spoil evening which in fact was my birthday. Hopefully they will get their act together and make sure they have adequate staffing for the future.

While visiting Horsley last week we decided to take a long walk around the surrounding area and on our way back we passed by this charming country pub. The pub itself is an old traditional pub situated on a small roundabout heading into East Horsley with amble parking around the back. The staff here were super friendly and very helpful, so nice to be in a happy pub for a change. The facilities were "English Pub standard" - draw your own conclusions but the food was nice, hot and tasty. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating should the weather tempt you.

This is a reliably good gastro pub. Service always very good indeed in our experience. It gets busy during peak times and is packed on a Friday evening. It has a good vibe and the food is very good. A visit is recommended. Parking can be a little tricky but there are places around the area if the car park is full.

Had Sunday lunch here today, the worse roast dinner I have ever had! The lamb was red, cold shrivelled up roast potatoes, one carrot and some cabbage! My sister had the pork, 2 tiny pieces of pork, crackling that looked like a Dorito crisp, no carrots half a parsnip, cabbage and cold shrivelled up roast potatoes. Very poor standard!! However I would defiantly give 5 stars for the service, friendly and professional waitress and a very happy dog sitting behind us who had my lamb and thoroughly enjoyed it!!! Definitely wouldn’t dine here again.

Booked a table for 9 for a Friday lunchtime which included three elderly parents. The staff couldn’t have been more attentive and accommodating without being intrusive. Food was great and would highly recommend the fish pie (plenty of fish), the burger (properly chargrilled) . We also shared a medley of starters. Pudding wise, the lemon and mascarpone cheesecake was divine. Highly highly recommend.

We had been to see West Horsley Place, just up the road during the morning and called in on the off chance around 14.45 / 15.00 staff were very accommodating and the service was excellent. I had the Pie which was a proper pie not just meat in a dish and some puff pastry dumped on top, coffee and brownie were also good, my wife had the cheese burger but did have a dicky tummy later that night?

We went back to the Duke of Wellington yesterday as we hadn’t been for a while. For no reason other than we had forgotten about it. No one greeted us, not sure there was a manager as we never saw one. So we had to go and request a table. However, all floor staff very friendly. Our particular waitress was absolutely lovely. Australian I think. She explained the specials and menu and was bubbly and helpful. Great attention to detail and a true asset! However, the food (two roast meals) took a really long time. The restaurant was busy but one would expect someone to come and just apologise for the delay and reassure us. But when it arrived it was so bland. No seasoning, Bisto gravy with no body. Luke warm food, dull cabbage, frozen roast potatoes (aka aunt Bessie’s) and just totally uninspiring. We were starving so ate it, my partner finished mine, as he eats anything and we left. My chicken was perfectly good and the Yorkshire ( which may also have been bought in) was actually very good. But all lukewarm warm. It’s sad as we do like the venue but won’t be returning. So sad to see such simple food poorly executed. Not disastrous but truly disappointing. However, not a patch the Gomshall Mill, Percy Arms, The Gosling in Woking, and various others where we eat Sunday lunch. May I suggest that someone in charge here visits various other establishments in and around the area to get a sense of how much this was lacking. And take the chef with you.

Although the staff were friendly we were not offered the specials menu and only saw it at the end of the meal. The food was disappointing I was served a dry portion of ginger cake which was meant to be sticky toffee pudding ! Really not a proper gastric pub

Easter Sunday lunch get together with family- a big success. We were looked after by Jo and numerous others- we all opted for the roast lamb/chicken which was delicious. Everyone commented on the excellent roast potatoes too! A very good menu for puddings too. We highly recommend the Duke of wellington- pub food done properly. A very welcoming atmosphere and attentive service. Thank you.

We took our son out for dinner recently. He had chicken schnitzel and I had lamb. We had a taste of each others meal and both of us went down with severe food poisoning in the early hours of the following day. This sickness lasted 3 days. I telephoned the pub to report the incident thinking they would want to know. I was sent a questionnaire to complete which I did but have had nothing back even though I’ve emailed Claire again asking what the outcome is. I feel they’re not interested and would urge anyone to think carefully before eating here. Our experience was dreadful.

Thank you again for another lovely visit. Special thanks to the manager who is so hospitable and friendly a credit to the industry. We enjoyed gorgeous steaks beautifully cooked - thanks to the chef too. All the staff are brilliant and very welcoming and good at their jobs. A pleasure to dine here in a beautiful pub. 10 out of 10 from us and dog friendly too.

Interesting pub with a restaurant and a bar area with an open fire. Good outdoor area but near a busy road. Very friendly and welcoming service which is really nice but the food is just ok, not bad, but just ok which is a shame as this could be a great pub otherwise.

Lovely welcome, including a choice of where to sit despite a busy restaurant. Starter, mains, desert, all cooked to perfection. Attentive staff ( Thank you Jass and Joe!). We can highly recommend the Rump and lamb tonight, both tasty and tender. A relaxed meal for 2, eaten in the snug for a change. I've eaten here for both lunch and evening meals on numerous occasions and always had consistent quality of food and service, tonight was exceptional, thank you.

The roasts here are excellent - we had the weekly special which was Lamb & the Beef. Very good atmosphere, it was busy when we visited which is always a good sign. Had a great Christmas meal here with all the family. Staff welcoming, friendly and went out of their way to accommodate us. Excellent sticky toffee pudding!

Pre Christmas lunch with old friends…..fabulous! A mix of Christmas menu and normal lunch menu for us. Lovely mix of nibbles, halloumi fries and courgette fries (my favourites) olives and ciabatta whilst we decided on our main courses. Turkey for one, beautifully moist and substantial serving, duck breast and rump steak, just as we like them, and a fish goujon sandwich. As for drinks, good bottle of red, Malbec, a ‘mocktail’ bramble something and a lovely Spanish white wine. No desserts as too full. Fantastic atmosphere and super service. The Christmas decorations and heartwarming fire just made it, shame we had to leave….after nearly 3 hours! Thank you so much, absolutely recommend.

Worst Christmas dinner I have ever had. Overpriced, tiny portions, poor service. The 'free range' turkey was the smallest piece of tasteless breast meat I have ever eaten.

My wife and I went here for lunch with some friends (as we have done previously on a number of occasions). We had a table by a window so we did not feel hemmed in but some of the other tables looked rather crammed in. The food and general ambience were good and the staff were very pleasant, although the service was a trifle slow. My visit was slightly marred because a diner at an adjacent table went out, presumably for a smoke, and when she came back her voluminous fluffy pullover reeked of smoke, the odour of which permeated the area in which I was seated. (Personally I would banish tobacco addicts to at least the far side of the Solar System.)

A beautiful proper old pub with great food, service and atmosphere. For a Monday night it was busy, most places are dead on a Monday, so something must be right. I brought a group of us here and the food was lovely and the service was great from all the team, especially Jaz. I’d come back more often if only it was closer to home and I’m not stuck in the hotel over the road. Recommended

Dropped in for a small bite after visiting Horsley Place. We shared a burger and chips which was absolutely scrumptious. Lovely, friendly staff who were very happy seating us with our dog. Some of the main meals looked amazing.. will be back!

We regularly go the the Duke and love the atmosphere and staff - it is so well managed. However, what is the company’s strategy with regard to food? It just seems expensive - especially with a cost of living crisis going on.

Back from holiday where the food was ‘hit and miss’, we were desperate for a good meal and knew where to get it……we were not disappointed. We shared halloumi fries to get our taste buds going and then enjoyed rump steak with chips and the duck with mash. We planned on having the mascarpone cheesecake from the specials board but will have to save that for next time as we were full and very happy. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal, the lovely warm atmosphere and the great service. Really pleased to see The Duke so busy, a reflection of things previously mentioned. We look forward to our next visit.

Went in for a Birthday Sunday Lunch. Absolutely lovely lunch in a beautiful location near the Surrey Hills. The Duke of Wellingtons team are superb , friendly welcoming and professional. Making the whole experience a joy , would really recommend you try this lovely country pub restaurant if you are walking/hiking or just out and about in this picturesque part of the countryside . A little birthday treat added to my desert and a number of the team wishing me a very happy birthday just added that bit extra to the service and the pride and good feeling they demonstrated throughout is worthy of this review. The food ( Roast beef plus all the trimmings ) was excellent . Great stuff!!!!

My husband and I, with another couple, came here for Sunday lunch. It was very busy but staff nonetheless took the time to be friendly and helpful to us throughout, despite clearly being rushed off their feet! There was a good choice of both roasts and other mains; we all went for roast, having beef, pork and the chicken roast of the day between us. These were all excellent and generous portion sizes to say the least; we also shared cauliflower cheese (ok) and stuffing (superb) between us. Vegetables were cabbage and roasted carrots and parsnips, all beautifully cooked. We were already fairly full but the choice of desserts was too tempting! Apple crumble turned out to be the poorest choice of the desserts we had, with the ratio of crumble to custard being much too heavily weighted towards the crumble. The pear tarte tatin was very good, however, and the blackberry trifle was delicious! Overall, an excellent lunch. We will be back!
