Just sat in here at The Dog n Gun in Keswick … was starving and still starving…. Ordered the award winning Beef n Ale Pie. What a complete and utter disappointment . .. I counted three very small pieces of beef in a pie filled with hot air ….. this is disgraceful …. What a letdown…… just awful

Lunch we both had Goulash which was amazing. Our problem started when I asked the middle aged bottle blonde behind the bar what time they served food. She snapped at me “not till 12” and “ we can’t take orders before!” I didn’t mind waiting and during the course of our visit attempt med to be pleasant to her. I do not understand why people work in a customer facing role when they are rude and unhelpful! Maybe a career review or personality transplant would be in order. When you represent someone else’s business be professional. Food was fantastic as was the gentleman who served us.

£9.20 for a pint and a soft drink. Way over priced. The day before in a different lakes pub I had a pint and a glass of merlot for £9.70 It's a nice traditional pub with a nice atmosphere but the drinks are expensive.

What a lovely warm welcome we received by the guy behind the bar, ( I think he was the land lord) he was very friendly and funny, my husband is used to drinking John Smiths which they don't sell and wasn't sure what to order to take its place, so the guy gave my husband tiny samples of which he thought would be suitable, he chose one of them and enjoyed his pint, lovely atmosphere, cosy and warm, people were having meals which looked nice and if we go to Keswick again we will head straight there again, its a shame all the pubs in Keswick aren't as welcoming and friendly!

The pub is cosy with a great atmosphere and great for a few drinks. We enjoyed our meal but the tables are so close together it was a little uncomfortable with coats and a dog we ended up leaving as soon as we had finished our meal to find somewhere that wasn’t so cramped. The goulash was nice, we really enjoyed this pub for a couple of drinks but I’m not sure we’d eat here again during the busier periods.

Visited the Dog & Duck with family (and a dog!) on my first vinothersit back to the UK in eight years since emigrating. Chose the award-winning Steak & Ale pie with chips, which was really good. The rest of our party of four had a Steak and Ale pie (with mas), Hunter's Chicken and Chicken Katsu Curry, and everyone left full and happy. Nice pub located in the centre of Kewsick, great food, good and fast service and dog-friendly. Prices were great value and not 'tourist' prices.

After a superb day in the hills - Blencathra snow and fun, I planned a visit to this fine establishment with my companions because i have had so many fond memories of the D&G over many years. I was not disappointed. A very busy and energetic feeling welcomed us as we looked around for a spare table, there were four of us. Fortunately we managed to “squeeze” ourselves onto a table and with a fine pint of reasonably priced ale we talked about our day. I mentioned to my party that the D&G was legendary regarding the Goulash that was on their menu and it was decided to order this for each of us. With the Amazing help of a very wonderful staff member called Ru I managed, well she did to put my order through - my phone was not playing game - however with her patience, fun sense of humour and great banter we managed to achieve my order. After a short wait we were presented with an outstanding meal. I can not emphasise on how good a quality meal it was, all four of us were delighted with our option. So well done to the chef, you are indeed a master of your profession. Please visit this incredible legend of hospitality, you will not be disappointed. To Ru and the staff, thank you for making our day complete. A lovely memory that we will cherish forever. PS - the beer (pint of mild) was bang on. 🥾👍🍺

Hail, hearty folk of the Dog and Gun, loyal elghunder and all seekers of the cup of the golden brew! Before I begin i must apologise for the lateness of this review as it has taken several weeks to sail back to the native lands where I have broadband. The tale begins when we received word from our advance scouting party that the venerable Dog and Gun in Keswick was destined for a grand reconstruction. Hence, the noble warriors of #HammerOfTheGods resolved to journey forth and document the legendary ale hall before it underwent transformative embellishment (and then we could return afterward to document it again). As Odin himself compelled us to revisit the cherished alehouse, we thought it rude not to go immediately. Accompanied by my steadfast shield-breakers, Odin’s Hammer (Gareth, Drums), and Thor (Christopher, Harp), we embarked on the pilgrimage back to the Dog and Gun! We arrived mid-afternoon, ready to revel in ale drinking of godly proportions! Gareth also had a boner for the chicken wings so he could make his famous chicken bone broth in the premier inn kettle (see our other review for recipe). As stout Norse warriors, well-acquainted with the succulence of roast chicken, we are also comfortable with the roast swine, we harbor no animosity towards the ham. Yet, in our meticulous preparations for this year's expedition to raid the taverns of Keswick, we stumbled upon worrying reports of our cherished Dog and Gun from other scouting parties. Namely the svínskjǫt (best translation: "gammons"). These invaders infrequently reported disdain for the noble elghund and its canine brethren. Alas, we found ourselves concerned that the elghund within the Dog and Gun might have descended into a wild, uncontrollable, feral state! We gathered to pray that the gods of Valhalla would guard us from such tumultuous scenes. Upon our arrival, our hearts were uplifted by the assembly of elghunder, each creature resonating with the serenity bestowed by Odin. The dogs, irrespective of breed, carried themselves with exemplary honor and discipline, embodying the true essence of Viking spirit. Remarkably, no svínskjǫt (gammon) were found within the hallowed confines of the stronghold, neither alive nor in any state of decay. We found protection in the presence of a brown Þórbjǫrn (bear of Thor). The bear stood beside me, fiercely guarding the PDQ credit card machine as flagons of ale were served. In these ale-filled moments, the whispers of gammon proved mythical, or perhaps the gammon had been vanquished, or eaten by the elghunder? Alas, here concludes the saga. We drank with Viking gusto, and with the best will in the world, Thor lost his helmet, Gareth’s hammer found its way to the premier inn reception the next day, and, in an unexpected twist, I found myself in Millets buying new attire after my late-night curry thoroughly dismantled my undergarments. Brace yourselves for the next uproarious chapter. In essence, the Dog and Gun remains a stronghold of awesomeness, and our return, like the relentless tides, is guaranteed. You, too, should answer the call and inform the good folk of the Dog and Gun that the hammer of the gods sent you!

Charged £41 for 2 regular goulash and 2 pints. Makes it £9 a pint! Got a feeling I must have paid for someone else's food or drinks as my next pint was under £5. (Or was a sneaky heafty tip put on?) I know I should have checked when paying but it was busy, heavy rain outside and was happy to get ordered and sat and I was never given a receipt. Meal itself was lovely, atmosphere great, but when I got credit card statement it's left a bitter taste in my mouth. Don't let it happen to you! It is a nice place, all the dogs were well behaved! We will go back as we have eaten there loads of times as are relatively local (15 mins drive from Keswick) but next time I will be double checking before tapping the card. Suggest you do the same.

We stopped going to the Dog and Gun, because of the amount of dogs and irresponsible owners that were frequenting it, but after many years we thought we'd give it the benefit of the doubt. On entering we didn't notice any animals, so we ordered the previously excellent goulash, and claimed a table. Unfortunately we regretted our choice as the bar quickly filled up with all manner of smelly hounds and oblivious owners, creating havoc as their leads became tangled trip hazards and the barking became unbearable. It also has to be noted that whoever is dishing up the goulash is no longer following the original recipe, as it is now a poor imitation of what it once was. It's such a shame as it's a decent looking pub, in a lovely part of the world.

Avoid this pub if you don't have or like dogs. The dogs are not the problem, it's the dog owners - as always! Place is swamped with em, they let them yak, yelp, bark, sniff etc. We settled in at a table and then two idiots with two large wet smelly inquisitive dogs sat next to us. They let them explore our table and legs. F@£k that so we moved only to be then sat near a pack of hounds making so much noise that we left or drinks and went to a dog-free Wetherspoons.

Sat with friends having a drink. All of us over 60 and above. Ordered a round of drinks only to be told that I wouldn’t be served again as I was drunk. When I tried to ascertain why they thought I was drunk- unsteady on my feet ( I have arthritis). No, it was because I was slurring my words. At no point did the bar staff ask if there was a reason why I might be slurring. I have recently had a stroke that shows itself in my speech. I found myself feeling very vulnerable and uncomfortable. I feel that the pub needs to look at their disability policy and make sure they are not treating disabled people with inequality.

We were hungry and tired, so rather than walking all the way into City Centre, we stopped here and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. By that time of our trip, were used to eating with dogs on the floor.

Fantastic experience, everything from the food, to the atmosphere and the staff. Could not recommend a better place to grab lunch and a pint. Special mention about the goulash as it was delicious. Can not wait to come back. Table number 4

We often come here. Staff friendly. Goulash wasn't as good as last time but still a good standard and good quality produce used. Will return. Please offer decent hot drinks. Get a coffee machine, hit chocolate and nice teas. Not everyone drinks alcohol.
