The Royal Oak Braithwaite Restaurant in Allerdale

We've been visiting Braithwaite for some years now and always go to the Royal Oak, as well as the other two hotels in the village. The Royal is a lovely friendly and cosy place to have food and drinks, we went there every day durning our six night stay over Christmas and had a great time. We had a family meal one evening, but if I'm being honest it wasn't that great. Two of us had game pie, and it was alright, just nothing special. The ladies both had hunters chicken, and neither said they particulaly enjoyed it. I didn't try it but it didn't look appealing I must admit. I think this is one of those places where they've not quite got everything right on the menu, as looking at other reviews and photos, some of the food looks lovely. However, negatives aside, we will continue to use this place and would recommend it too, we just found that the food didn't command the price this time. We will be back in the summer.

What a fantastic meal we had! Thanks the great staff. What a lovely friendly welcome we got, great festive atmosphere and staff went over and above to accommodate out preferences I would DEFINITELY come here again and miss out the Ivy Hotel which was overpriced and not as friendly. Well done guys and galls

Staying for only one night at this excellent accommodation. Wishing they could accommodate another night! Staff are amazing , friendly and so helpful especially Leon and Dudley. The service was outstanding with a welcoming and friendly approach. I will definitely rebook this accommodation and can fully recommend the food service and rooms for a lovely break .

Excellent food and service in both the restaurant and pub during our stay. Dudley, in particular, really looked after us and gave us great advice about local walks and attractions. Not bad for a Brummie! Would highly recommend.

An amazing room with a beautiful view of the mountains, very clean Pauline did a fantastic job with the cleaning. The room was very big and enough room as we took our Labrador retriever so plenty of space. The food was beautiful and the bar was amazing, very friendly and welcoming. Great atmosphere and very homely. We walked to Keswick and back in about 45 mins great walking distance. Thanks to the staff Leo, Becca and Dudley for making our stay perfect.

Spotless clean room, good facilities ie comfy bed and pillows, nice shower and tea/coffee making. Very very friendly staff and meal in restaurant just gorgeous.

Great visit to the Royal Oak in Braithwaite on Halloween night. The pub looked amazing dressed for Halloween. The chefs Megan and Lee did a great job with our food.

We visited the pub after a long walk and the team working in the pub Becca, George,Dudley and Grace we very welcoming and pub ambience warm and friendly. We stayed for our evening meal and had delicious food. My husband ordered the wrong meal for our daughter but she still enjoyed her meal. The homemade steak and ale pies were fantastic. We decided to spend our last night on holiday at the pub for a meal and again the ambience did not disappoint. Our dog was just as welcome as us and again the food and service was second to none. Well done to the team who work very well together which creates a very relaxed and welcoming atmosphere and we will return again in the future when we stay at the local campsite 😍

Stopped in after a long day walking in the hills. Had the most amazing food (thanks chef Lee), including a very yummy fruit crumble. The pub is very friendly and we enjoyed an excellent level of service from all the staff

The Royal Oak. My wife and I visited the Royal Oak for an evening meal mid July recently and I would like to pass my thanks to the staff, especially the chef for an absolutely brilliant meal. Friendly, the waiter and I enjoying a joke or two about his home town of Birmingham. Good pub, good food and beer, been visiting the Lakes 30 years, give this place a visit.

Probably now the best pub food in the village. We live in the village and often take our visitors for a meal at one of the local pubs and restaurants. This was the first time we have been to The Royal Oak since the new management arrived. The service was good, but a little slow as it gets very busy with tourists. The food was produced quickly. The menu was simple but our meals were excellent and reasonable value for money. We will return. (PS They also serve good beer!)

We ate here twice whilst camping in Thornthwaite and I’m glad we did. We walked to the pub, although parking along the road side is an option if the car park is busy. Staff are friendly and super efficient. The food was delicious, we had the pie, fish and chips, Cumberland sausage and Halloumi burger washed down with pints of Guinness and Directors. When we are away for a walking weekender in the countryside, we always like to find a good country pub servicing great pub food and the Royal Oak didn’t disappoint. I would also book so as not to miss out. They also have rooms and I would definitely stay there if I was in the area again.

So pleased this great pub has reopened with a fantastic new set of staff who are friendly, passionate and welcoming! The food on both nights was great and our group of 5 had no issues with service timings, quality of food or the price. One of our NEW favourite places to visit, thank you 😊

Used this wonderful pub as my local for my stay in Braithwaite and it was thoroughly delightful. Wonderful staff, very friendly customers, excellent range of beers and superb music creating a great atmosphere (although not too loud so you couldn't have a conversation!). I ate there with friends on the Tuesday night as well and was impressed with the food. Thanks to everyone at the Royal Oak - I hope to be back at some point!

Went here for an evening meal. Had fancied sitting outside but all tables were taken. Decided to try inside and were surprised by how nice it is. Obviously been recently refurbished. Very friendly helpful staff. Tried the lamb Henry, a vegetarian lasagne and a sticky toffee. All were really excellent. Really enjoyed our meals here and will come back.

Lovely stay at the royal Oak. Really impressed with the room - spotless, comfy bed & great bathroom. Meal delicious (would recommend steak pie) & great service from Jenny and all the staff - 5 mins from Keswick would definitely recommend! Make sure you visit if you are in the area

We enjoyed our visit. Good food. Very friendly professional, hard working staff. And a nice atmosphere. Just before we arrived the pub had had a surge of a group of well over 40 people on top of their usual business. So some food and drink on offer was understandably a little bit depleted. But the staff remained unflustered, smiling and helpful. It is good to see whoever responds to some of the occasional apparently unreasonable reviews of the Royal Oak somebody taking some of the reviewers to task for their unrealistic attitude especially if they have not mentioned any complaint at the time and therefore have not given staff the opportunity to rectify matters appropriately. I do think that many readers understand this however and just ignore such petulant reviews. Thank you all at the Royal Oak for all your hard work in making our evening very enjoyable. Your dedication is much appreciated by us and we are sure by many others.

Great pub, good pint of Cumberland Ale, the food was cooked to perfection and staff so friendly and welcoming, will definitely be visiting again, thanks to you all for your hospitality

Fantastic location in the Lake District, plenty of scope for walks. Lovely helpful and friendly staff, tasty food a warm and cosy bar. And clean and comfortable rooms, with a fantastic shower, although the toilet is a bit small but it's an old building so can't be helped, not the best WiFi but again can easily live without. Will 100% be returning.

My wife and I visit Braithwaite twice a year both summer and winter for a week of walking and have been using the Royal Oak for over 10 years.We have always enjoyed a few drinks after our walk and have been taking our springer spaniel with. We stay at the nearby Scotgate/ Braithwait village touring caravan park and would spend most evenings in the pub leaving our dog in the caravan when we ait and then bringing him inside when they stopped serving food. This was a rule that worked for everyone dog owners and not however on returning this year I was informed the pub has new owners and no dogs are allowed in at anytime. For a pub in what is a location used predominately by walkers a large proportion who have a dog as a walking companion this is disappointing.I was informed dogs are only allowed outside which is fine when its a nice hot day but not in January.Im afraid I and many other other ex customers will now be using the Colldale Inn approx 100 meters further on who welcome dogs and owners even at food times.

Quaint English pub - perfect after a long walk. Food was great. Sticky toffee pudding was exceptional.

Just had Sunday lunch at the Royal Oak, the service was extremely smooth and efficient, the staff were polite, friendly and very helpful. There was the usual full menu available and the additional sunday roast which we had. We couldn't find fault with it. Very well organised. All in all would definitely recommend and we will be back..soon

I feel like where they are just outside of go ape they are going to get customers regardless of how the food is which it wasn't good at all. Overpriced would not recommend going there.

The Royal Oak is an absolute gem and exactly what all good pubs should be. A friendly warm welcome, good choice of beers, excellent food and a roaring fire. We visit Keswick every year and it’s the only pub we go to. Can’t wait to return

We have been here quite a few times on our travels and have always had great food and a warm welcome. The steak and ale pie is amazing and I have had one of the best fish pies ever here when it was on the specials board. Definitely recommended.

Called in for a couple of drinks on a wet afternoon at the start of November. Despite being cold and wet outdoors the fire was not lit. Very disappointing for a country pub. A real fire is an essential part of the atmosphere in my opinion and it would have been nice to warm our feet. On the plus side beer was very good.

We spent a week in the village on holiday with family, visiting the royal oak four times for a meal, all six of us aged 4 to 67 loved the pub, the food was better than perfect, staff were just as perfect, can't wait till next years visit, perhaps we could go for all 7 nights next year, thank you for making all 4 visits just great

This is a local pub in a gorgeous location. We were well looked after with food coming astonishingly quickly.The meals (steak and ale pie and pork belly) were really good. Nothing fancy, they just did exactly what was said on the tin. The real winner was the dessert menu! Great selection and they were delicious.The place was plainly furnished and it was just lacking an atmosphere. This could be because of the recent pandemic, however the bright room felt empty.

Sunday lunch for family of three.We all went for the lamb Sunday roast (2 adults and a children’s one) - food was incredible! Lovely friendly staff, prompt service, 3 empty plates including dessert plates/bowls too and all very good value for money too. If you’re anywhere near, go her for a Sunday roast and you won’t be disappointed.

Very disappointing... we’ve probably drunk and/or eaten here every year for a decade on our annual Lakeland walking trip. Last night the burgers simply didn’t measure up and the Cumberland sausage and mash was just a little sad looking. Onion rings were great but you can’t run a pub on onion rings! Sort yer food out Oakie- we want to come back...

Champiñones al ajillo para empezar, gambas, salchicha Cumberland y un brownie de chocolate para terminar. Stay at home! The food was off the shelf and ordinary. Shame, they could do so much with this place but it appears they are busy because of the Passing trade...or maybe they offer a better quality to locals?Come on pubs...shape up or ship out...we need to go back to good old excellent pub grub...

We booked an evening meal at this pub during a short stay nearby, The whole experience was a pleasure. The arrangements around the current Covid-19 situation were excellent, and the staff were very professional, yet friendly and helpful. The social distancing arrangements didn't spoil the atmosphere at all, and the food was delicious.I would recommend the Royal Oak to others without hesitation.

This is a really nice, relaxing pub that serves great, traditional pub food. It catered nicely for my gluten-free needs as well (I highly recommend the Cumberland sausage). Book early now to avoid disappointment.

Fairly quiet but main holiday season over and weather not good.Welcomed; given a table well isolated.All drinks orders via staff and menu for food.Great starter of a really nice Pate and then Belly pork which was just fantastic, sure not good for the waist.Menu is limited by necessities of current conditions so no puddings if you are so inclined.The Perroni larger served ice cold is to die for!Lovely evening; great staff and execution of covid procedures was first class..

We booked ahead for lunchtime but found there was plenty of space inside, more people were sitting outside, it was a lovely day. Plenty of sanitizer points around the pub & customers were observing the Covid regulations which was good to see. We enjoyed a fabulous roast beef dinner, plenty of meat along with a very good Yorkshire pudding & perfectly cooked veg. Car parking could be tricky at busy times I would imagine as it looks like more outside tables have been provided but there was space on the street too. Recommend.

On our family holiday away in Keswick we booked in here for a evening meal. Lovely pub in great surroundings. Staff were attentive and friendly. Seemed to be working well under the current guidelines. I had a lamb Henry as my main which was amazing. Wife had salmon and my young daughter had macaroni cheese and both said they enjoyed theirs. All in all a great meal out.

Went to eat during government eat out discount ; Service was excellent, young man who served us was very polite, excellent advice and recommended a dish which my partner loved.Overall the establishment has adapted to COVID 19 well. The atmosphere was relaxed and we felt very safe.The meals where excellent. We would 100 percent book again.

Very well organised in terms of covid precautions. Staff all wear face masks and tables distanced and cleaned. Food and beer as always is top notch pub grub. Staff very friendly all round a pleasant experience in the new climate. Recommended.

Ate & drank here several times during our stay in Braithwaite. Bar & Restaurant tables were set out with social distancing in mind. Staff were accommodating and all wore face coverings. Friends joined us for Sunday lunch. Roast lamb shoulder was excellent especially for £9:95. Fish & Chips were also well received as was the Pork Belly. Lots of outside seating, some with shade. Always busy with walkers and families. However, unusually for the Lake District, no Dogs allowed. This cost the Royal Oak it’s fifth star!!

Before I start the full review I feel the need to warn anyone staying in August. We started our stay last Monday and had booked a table in the restaurant that evening.We had our meal and it was added to our tab. However on the Friday morning when I cleared the tab they hadn't applied the eat out, help out discount. When I queried this I was told that I should have paid on the day to claim the discount.I said why wasn't I told that on the day and was told I should have been but there wasn't anything she could do. Considering how much I had spent in the hotel she could have offered some compensation or at least asked for permission. I was very annoyed about the failure to communicate the rules which cost us £20.However as the above is a one of occurrence I haven't let it affect my scoring of the establishment. When we arrived we had a pleasant walk into Keswick before we booked in. When we booked in they explained that she couldn't show us the room just tell us where to find it. What she didn't say was that no staff would be entering the bedroom to service it but she left some new tea bags and milk outside our door when requested. The breakfasts were always very good the only slight criticism being the service was slow but I never complained because the 1 member of staff working was always rushing from table to table apologising for any delays.The evening meals we had on the Monday and Thursday were both very good, on the Monday I had creamy garlic mushrooms followed by chargrilled chicken breast while my partner had chicken liver pate followed by a small scampi. On the Thursday we swooped starters while I had a burger while my partner had a small steak pie.We both enjoyed our stay , the bedroom was comfortable and the bathroom facilities were good. Overall apart from the issues caused by the virus I would recommend it to anyone

Keeping it short, wonderful friendly staff, beautiful room, a great atmosphere, and delicious grub, Nicely situated just outside Keswick with easy access to some of the must do peaks, a great base for exploration, and will definitely be returning

My husband and I called in for tea after a very long walk . We had main courses of the special chicken kebab and the steak pie. Both were very good and the steak and chicken can be recommended. I think home cooked chips would have been an idea but the ones we had were also lovely

Stopped here for a mid-afternoon drink. Beer garden is effectively a car park, set up with tables and gazebos. We find it baffling in a location rife with dog walkers that no area of this premises can be set aside to be dog friendly during meal service - particularly outside during the summer months. We appreciate that not everyone wants to share their dining space with a furry friend, but most other establishments in the area have dog-free sections. Surely this would be an acceptable compromise for all. Disappointed that we were unable to dine here during our week’s stay in the village.

Stayed here for the second time in 12 months, a great place to stay if you want to explore the northern lakes. A wonderful welcome from Gemma and the rest of the staff, the food here is excellent. we had the Curried parsnip soup as a starter, outstanding. not to hot and filling. The menu is great and the quality is second to none. I cannot praise this place enough, if you are in the area pop in. I will defo be going back.

This Pub is number two on Trip Advisor for the area and we can understand why. We had our first nights meal in this restaurant. The food was excellent, good presentation, portions and the staff were very friendly and helpful. This was one of the best meals we had on our holiday to the area

Lovely pub, service and great food. Make sure you book a few days in advance for food though. We had the pork belly and sausage and it was amazing. Great for allergies. I had a gluten free starter and Main and it was amazing. Can’t recommend them highly enough.

Having enjoyed a couple of pints in the pub garden on our Saturday afternoon we had dinner on Sunday evening. The bar and restaurant were very well organised on both days with all of the safety measures in place and, as I said above, all of the restaurant staff wore masks which made us feel extra comfortable and safe. Our food, lasagne and steak & ale pie were both very good indeed and too large for us to even consider a desert. The wine was very drinkable and not too expensive. A very enjoyable meal!

Stayed at the Royal Oak for four night. It was a great stay. Breakfast was fantastic. You must have the sausage with what ever you choice is. They are locally made in Cockermouth, just meat, delicious and will set you up for the day.Good selection of beers. The steak and ale pie for evening meal is a must. My room was ideal. Lot's of hot water for a relaxing bath after a long day on the hills

This was our first meal out since lockdown and an excellent experience it was too. Very friendly, (& Covid friendly) welcome by 'the lady of the house'. A clear explanation of how the seating, hygiene etc would be working...but not too much. We loved the reduced menu: I had the Lighter Menu option of Pork belly with mash & apple sauce plus carrots & green beansveg. Delicious. My partner had a Lighter Cod, chips & peas. We were both really happy with the evening and would both recommend and return. Well done to The Royal Oak.

Great pub and hotel. Perfectly located for exploring the Lake District. Particular thanks to Gemma for arranging vegan options for breakfast. Some lovely vegan meals on the pub menu & specials board too. Highly recommend.

Delicious food served in a characterful, friendly pub. Can especially recommend the Cumberland Sausage and Sticky Toffee Pudding! They also have a good selection of gluten free options.

Just had a lovely meal here, bit apprehensive about the COVID issue but needn’t have worried the hygiene standards were first class lots of cleaning, hand washing etc. The staff were excellent, really friendly and the food was delicious. I would definitely recommend The Royal Oak for its food, it’s staff and it’s excellent hygiene we really felt safe.

We visited on a Saturday night and were amazed at how much COVID-19 had affected custom. Food was very good however, and beer spot on. One slight criticism, wen the pub is so quiet, maybe a bit of background music would help lift the spirits

We booked the Royal Oak on 17 February 2020 to hold a birthday dinner for 39 family and friends. Gemma and her team were excellent in helping us organise this and the food on the night was superb. A great time was had by all. Thank you so much. The Royal Oak is a truly great hostelry, well worth a visit.

We are staying near the Royal Oak, for the week, we called in for a nice pint, the first night and had a delicious Sunday Lunch, we have just called in for a swift pint, lovely beer, delicious food, home tomorrow, can’t wait to come back again.

We have been staying here for 5 nights last day today . The whole place is outstanding, really clean and cared for. I would guess it has had a a refit lately, all the furniture is tasteful and of good quality. The food has been brilliant we ate here for breakfast and for our evening meals after a day out exploring the area we didn’t see the point in trying somewhere else, the food is cooked fresh to order, pipping hot and delivered with a smile. All the staff are very friendly and made helpful suggestions of where to visit well done to the Royal Oak team x

Called in at this pub for an evening meal. This pub is dog friendly outside food serving times but dogs are not allowed in during lunch times and evening meal time. The menu includes both standard size portion meals and meals for those with a smaller appetite. We both chose to have bacon chops which were absolutely delicious. There is a good choice of well kept ales and the service is attentive, friendly and efficient. Great meal.

Friendly staff and wide menu. Could not fault service and pub basics such as pie and chips/fish and chips looked great. I was trying to be a bit healthy so picked grilled salmon, spinach and boiled rice which was ok but a little bland.

Lovely country pub serving food, staff were great, friendly and helpful. My only compliant is the food and beer are over priced. We were staying in the village and just felt I was paying ‘down South prices’. Yes you have a captive audience but no need to take the Michael.

Amazing food at this pub. We ate there on numerous occasions during our summer break in 2019 and booked up again whilst staying in Bassenthwaite for Valentine's night. Food was delicious and we couldn't fault the service. Look forward to visiting again in the near future.

We both had the steak pie and enjoyed sitting by the fire on a rainy afternoon. We thought the food was excellent and the young lady behind the bar was extremely pleasant and helpful - will definitely call again and would recommend. I thought the portions were massive and I was more than happy with my smaller plate but I could imagine if you had walked all morning you might be able to tackle the larger portion - will give the Sunday lunch a go next !

Had two meals here during a weeks stay in Braithwaite. Friendly staff, good beer and excellent food.

We called in at the Royal Oak after doing Barrow Fell today. Superb Sunday roast and a nice pint of beer to wash it down. The pub is warm and welcoming and the staff very friendly. We will definitely be calling in again.

Called in for lunch on Saturday afternoon between Christmas & New Year. Was warm, welcoming & staff were polite & friendly. Nice open fire on the go. We had lovely soup and Cumberland sausage sandwich. All delicious.

Our first attempt to eat here was a failure - it was so busy we could not get a table! Next attempt was very satisfying. The atmosphere was pleasant, the staff were very pleasant and the food was very good. Especially pleasing was that the menu allowed smaller portions for small appetites, which suits older folk! Overall, a good evening was had with good atmosphere, staff, food and beer.

Great village pub. Booking recommended for restaurant meal even in early December. Good selection of dishes from the menu and also of drinks available from the bar.

Serves an average but well cooked and presented menu.The Small Plates menu proved to be an excellent size for me. Nice atmosphere in the bar.

My friend and I were looking for somewhere to eat and came across this bar/restaurant. The place was great. The staff were fantastic, making room for us. The service was excellent. We ordered the Lancashire Hotpot and it was delicious, hot and was served really quickly. I will be back.

Came here quite a few times in a week and was always very busy but always got good service and was never waiting long to bd served. Tables in bar area are generally full by about 5pm but that just shows what a good place it is. Ate one night in restaurant and food was good just a little disappointed to get what looked and tasted like frozen veg.

Great pub food at a reasonable price. Portion size was very generous. Good selection of wine available. The pub was very busy and if there are no tables in the restaurant then food is served on a. First come first served basis in the bar.

Good food, well served. Only have small meals, the big meals are too much. Book if you can the restaurant get very busy.

Nice pub to stop in for a good pint of ale and a bite to eat. Was pleasantly surprised to see a vegan burger on their menu which was enjoyable. Welcoming staff and cosy decor. Would recommend

Difficult to say much more than the headline, though the service was really excellent. Glad we booked for a Friday night - place was packed. But the chips were so poor I left some!

The Royal Oak offers a warm welcome and very helpful staff. Enough variety on the menu to last a week (we only repeated one meal! The steak was perfectly cooked) If you are looking for a quiet pub, this is not for you, but a buzzy busy atmosphere worked for us. Very helpful crew for my husband's mobility issues, altough not all areas are wheel chair accessible.

You know it's the best pub as it's always packed.
