There wasn’t a table free in the competitors venue. So, we walked by and headed to the Crown. Lots of cars outside and no doubt a scrabble to park in any season, let alone March. Inside was immediately warm. The bar had a few guests within it and the bar was manned by one team member that was more than able to cope. Even with the occasional episodes created by a crashing till. We found a seat by the fire with the angry sign reading: “Do not touch the fire”. A shame really as a roaring fire (or any fire) would have been just the ticket here, even beyond the obvious warmth that was already present. We disrobed and headed to the bar we dodged our way past other guests that pickled the pathways around the randomly (if heavily) populated furniture “showroom” and made our order. Now, I personally did not order the first round and therefore was unaware of the pricing structure here at the Crown but I did get the second round and I am currently plotting a significant “job” where I can repay the Bulgarian national debt that was needed to buy two Guinness, a Baileys, a coffee and a 175ml wine and soda. (£35ish!!). You have been in this scenario where one tries to work backwards the Individual pricing… for the sake of time, letters and sanity.. I will let you do that. Whilst I plan the job regardless! In the bookcase opposite I note a tv screen that shows a rotation of arty “foodporn”. Some local pictures festooned in sepia and some very old advertising that frankly wouldn’t be allowed in the modern day. I am not sure I saw the relevance of all the slides but it filled the time as I stretched out the drinks to avoid the third abuse of one of our money holders. The toilets were clean, the decorations were good and entertaining (even the silk map above the urinal showing the local area and its war style access points). Some lights were out in the closed restaurant. I suggest a lack of 50ps for the meter were the cause. I can only assume the till was full of notes and card receipts based on my own short reconnaissance. Also, if you charge these prices make sure everything is perfect. Tables cleared immediately, chairs reset, bathrooms checked regularly and much more besides. Then the price pales a little against perceived value. Blah, blah… Hey look, we liked our visit and may have stayed longer if the pricing was inviting. However, that’s the crux of these modern times isn’t it? The venue “may” be great, the fayre “could” be stunning but if the abiding perception is about the price then something has obviously gone wrong, hasn’t it? Maybe next time..

We visit Norfolk regularly but haven’t been to the crown for a couple of years. I must say it didn’t disappoint, service good and atentive without being intrusive. We were a party of 4 and were impressed with the variety of both the starters and main courses on offer. We were also pleasantly surprised with the quality of the dishes that were delivered. Really good meals had by all. The only observation I would make as both starters and mains are quite large, not over facing, but meant none of us were able to have a pudding. Disappointing for us and maybe a lost revenue opportunity. For the crown. That aside I would wholeheartedly recommend visiting as a couple or a family.

We often visit this area of Norfolk and often have thought about dining at the Crown, but this was our first time. And it was fantastic. Great setting, lovely and inviting ambiance complete with historic flag floors and open fires crackling away, and a very convivial dining room. The staff were friendly and enthusiastic. The very varied menu did not disappoint. Food and wine were simply delicious. Complete with some very unusual options, which were yummy. We will certainly return.

Although it took a while to get anyone’s attention or any acknowledgement despite standing at the bar to tell them we had arrived for our 7.30pm booking, when we did, the staff were friendly and showed us to our table. We sat in the dog friendly section which was nicely decorated, with low and relaxing lighting and an appropriate volume of music. Not an enormous menu but a nice selection of dishes which we were happy with. We both chose the Crayfish Cesar Salad which was a nice portion size and one the chicken with tagliatelle with a cream mushroom and redcurrant sauce and the other haddock goujons. Both dishes were delicious and we both thoroughly enjoyed them. The sauce with the chicken was just divine albeit a little on the thin side. Ideally a little more tagliatelle would have made me happier to soak up this gorgeous sauce, but the staff happily brought some lovely fresh chunky granary bread. Sadly, we won’t have time to return to try some of the other dishes on offer this trip but certainly will on our next visit. The staff were friendly and a lady who we assumed was the manager was very friendly, full of personality and shared loads of info on the hotel, about staying there in the future and even about the ingredients of the gorgeous chicken sauce. Talking to other diners who were staying at the hotel, all had nothing but praise for the food each evening and their stay there. We were really impressed. Had a lovely evening and will be back. Thank you for such a nice evening.

We recently spent 2 nights at The Crown while on an independent bicycle trip around Norfolk. I was looking for a boutique hotel with a modern decor and The Crown delivered. The public spaces are more historic, but the room (Copper Bath Double in adjacent building) was exactly what we wanted -- totally modern, tastefully furnished, private patio (with great chairs for reading/lounging), a large, up-to-date bathroom with large walk-in shower. Being off the main road at the end of the village green meant that the room was very quiet, even with windows and patio door open. The room was serviced daily (which doesn't always happen post-covid), staff were very friendly. We had an excellent dinner in the dining room one night and two lovely cooked-to-order breakfasts (with buffet of cold items) both mornings. We'd highly recommend the hotel and we'd stay again if ever in Wells.

The highlight of our meal was the rhubarb, vanilla and elderflower panna cotta. It was beautifully presented and mouth-watering. Not sure I've ever started a review with the pudding, but it seemed appropriate! Prior to this we'd had a variety of dishes: the roast beef, fish & chips, sweet potato & coconut soup and some vegetable tempura. Everything was well cooked and the service was efficient.Although there is a vegan menu, there was not a great deal of choice for vegetarians: just one option for a main course on the main menu. It would have been greatly appreciated if the option to have a nut-roast or similar as an alternative to the meat raosts on offer.Overall though the food was very good at a small hotel located away from the main touristy parts of Wells, overlooking a picturesque green.

Undoubtedly 'top notch' for the price. The service was attentive & timely without ever being intrusive. One particular amazing touch was when the waitress noticed my wife struggling with her necklace which had fallen to the table. She not only brought along a pair of tweezers, but mended the clasp to ensure it was once again safe to wear. I believe her name was Katie, thanks - a task well beyond the call of duty! The restaurant had a very pleasant ambience & was spacious in these worrying Covid times. All in all this rates as possibly the best Christmas lunch we have had in many years. faultless staff, faultless food. in short Brilliant.

The food was very good and well presented. Good size portions. Atmosphere was OK but spoiled for us by the number of dogs allowed in the restaurant. Service was excellent and we did enjoy our meal.

Popped in on a Sunday afternoon for a drink (or two as it turned out). Mid afternoon the dining areas were still busy which is a good sign so booked for the next evening. the restaurants were also busy on a Monday night in October which was great to see. Food is higher price and higher quality than a typical pub meal but worth the premium. Menu choice is limited (probably a sign of the times) but enough selection to still have a dilemma on what to pick!Staff were working hard as busy but still very cheerful and welcoming.Overall a great establishment and would recommend a visit.

Had a lovely meal here, Covid friendly, so felt safe. Staff attentive and made sure we enjoyed our visit. Food was outstanding. Definitely enjoyed the chilli prawns and the steak was well worth the money. Will definitely be returning.

We visited here with my parents and whilst the location is perfect for being able to go out, walk and explore the area and walk to the beach the hotel does have some limitations. The food was very good but the limited menu did restrict the options and whilst the rooms were nice they are overpriced, this is probably due to the limited places to stay in the area, so it was an expansive break. Very friendly staff and good practices in the place for social distancing.

The restaurant at the Crown hotel provided us with the best meal we had during our week staying in Wells.Food all freshly prepared to order and just about all of the dishes we had were to be recommended though for me an outstanding, if unusual, dish was the Crab Bread and Butter Pudding as a starter. This savoury dish was a triumph of experimentation and will remain a major feature in my memory of our stay in Wells. The wine list is comprehensive and the staff friendly and helpful.Happily recommended.

We were asked for any dietary requirements in advance and the chef went to the trouble of preparing a special sauce for my fish - it was delicious!

We really enjoyed our evening at The Crown. I booked online a few weeks before our visit as I thought it would be busy because of ‘Eat out to help out’ and summer holidays. I’m glad we booked as it was very busy around Wells. We had a lovely meal including Brancaster oysters. Service was good, as was the wine and we enjoyed our food.

Booked in advance- this is expected in current guidelines! Food was of good quality and with the current Eat Out scheme made it even better. Drinks are expensive but this is to be expected. Would we go again YES!! Thank you🎀

Furniture stacked up equals social distancing! Well, apparently so at The Crown. We called in for a pot of tea on Friday. It wasn’t easy to get through to the inner bar or to see how we were meant to navigate the stool placed in the doorway between the bars. When we sat down we were surprised to see that social distancing had been achieved by stacking furniture on top of other furniture to render it out of use! It looked dreadful. We ordered a pot of tea. A large group of people arrived in the space next to us. It all felt rather crowded. We left shortly afterwards rather saddened at the presentation and atmosphere at the Crown and it’s response to these difficult times.

We booked a table for three well in advance. two of the group were gluten free and there were plenty of gluten free options on the dinner menu, including some delicious desserts. The tables were well spaced and the staff were welcoming, friendly and we felt safe eating inside.

The four poster bed was nice but the room very basic with a tatty curtain- needs refurbishing. No travel iron available as another room had asked for it but I wasn’t told they could get in back from that room later as they could ! It was a very hot day and our dinner reservation was for 7.30pm and we were told the kitchen shuts at 8pm and we were rushed to get all our food orders in and eat by 8pm. Then told the coffee machine had been turned off ! All in all very lacking in customer service. At breakfast the staff were very pleasant and coffee nice but all the fried eggs were hard.
