What a way to take advantage of late October sunshine? Sitting out with a bottle of wine and tucking into another amazing Crab Royale salad. The local delicacy, dressed crab along with cockles, smoked mackerel, prawns, coleslaw & potato salad. Probably the best value lunch along this pricey stretch of coastline. Roll on next summer for more visits to this quirky seafood shack...although interesting to see developments inside... a packed cute indoor restaurant, toasty warm, gingham tablecloths and candlelit tables. An ideal spot for birders and walkers on a nippy day. A lovely warm welcome as usual and a family business to cherish.

This places is very average. If you are after a fresh fish sandwich you would have a better experience at both Brancaster and Blakeney Fish vans. The bread was basic, a bit dry and not that generously filled, no salad ,no wow factors ,even presented on a cheap white plate which was chipped. Sitting outside was ok ,but inside wad horrid ,horrible hand written signs ,a nice blackboard with clear writing and white space would be nice .Finally it is cash only on hindsight wish we hadn't been able to scrape enough cash together.

We turned up at 12:15 without booking, and were lucky to get the last unbooked table. However, many of the bookings were for 2pm, yet they seemed reluctant to let people use them in the meantime, even though it is not the kind of place where a meal will last for hours. So advanced booking recommended. We ordered a crab salad and a crab & lobster salad. The food was served in about 3 minutes and was delicious. No airs & graces, just simple food at a decent price. Reminded me very much of visiting cafés at British seaside resorts when I was a kid back in the seventies. Be aware it is cash only, no cards at all. And despite what you may find online, it has no website. The owner said he doesn't do the internet - 'Why would I want to talk to all those people I don't know!'.

Rustic in seating but the sea food is A1, fresh and served by the friendly owner and staff. This makes it all the more appealing and highly recommended. As an aside realistic prices making it outstanding value now with ever increasing prices.

Brilliant place, we booked for 6 but unfortunately 2 had to drop out last minute, this meant we were able to sit inside which as the weather was a bit overcast it worked out well. The Crab shop is exactly what it says on the tin, it isn't pretentious, it delivers ridiculously great sea food for an exceptional price. The staff are brilliant, they try and accommodate were they can, but you just have to accept it is a small popular place, we were squashed into a corner, 4 old gits with dodgy hips, and knees, but it didn't matter, a bit of manoeuvring with other diners and we squeezed in, all done in a great natured way. Once sat we realised that the menu was on a board at the front and none of us could see it, no problem a bit more manoeuvring and I went to the counter and read out the options, the staff were laughing along with us as were a few of the diners, it was a really convivial place. When the food came it didn't disappoint, the royals are great value, the smoked fish is delicious, and all for a great price. Long may you continue, you gave us a great start to our mini break

Food nice if a bit chaotic. Booked a table but somehow not found possibly because we were 15 mins late. Every table seemed to be reserved so took one that was prob ours but lable removed. Very little shade on a hot day which must be addressed even if just more umbrellas. No one wanted full sun which is a pity because take it or leave it seem the options and making changes the planned seating causes some problems even when an obvious solution is apparent. Food came quickly but every add on mayo, bread butter, potatoes etc at additional cost. Location and freshness just about won the day overall but watching the ladies try and deal with changes almost to much to watch. Don't even think of just being a drop in.

Defo worth it. Food is excellently and amusingly well presented with plenty of imagination. The hospitality is very down to earth so much so that they don't tolerate idiots. These people work so hard giving us deliciously fresh seafood dishes at affordable prices every single day . I had crab Royale and my Daughter had the lobster. I've visited 2 times now and cannot wait to go back. Please ignore the 10 bob bit millionaires comments on here, it's a real gem of a place and so very glad I found it.

After reading the reviews we travelled for 2 hrs to visit Cookies crab shack and Salthouse. I was aware of the cash only situation, lack of toilet and very basic facilities but was keen to experience the great seafood and lovely people that other reviewers have written about. My expectations were fairly low. Despite this I can only say that I was terribly disappointed! The food itself was poor - poor quality white sliced bread with mainly brown crab meat with bits of shell in it. The cockles we had were gritty. We found the owners to be far from welcoming, not allowing us to sit in a window table because we were a two, ‘in case four people come in’ even though it was 3pm and there were several other empty tables. Instead we were squashed on a two person table by the door with my husband having to sit side on and the dog in the way of incoming customers. To top it off, another couple came in and were then allowed to sit at our requested table. We did not stay long and will not return. Such a shame

What a TRULY amazing experience this was and quite contrary to some other reviewers, the staff here could not have been more friendly, more attentive with them all having a very distinct sense of humour. For my £12.50 Royal salad meal I had an enormous plateful of mixed seafood which included smoked mackerel, smoked salmon, whelks, anchovies, prawns and my wife also had a £12.50 Royal salad, but hers was a whole dressed crab and no salmon, so we swapped 50/50 the salmon and crab. It was superb. Don't forget it is very strictly cash only and also don't forget that you can also take your own alcohol. We will definitely be going to this amazing dog friendly cafe whenever we are near to Salthouse.

I love this place and it is great to see it back open. We live about a 45 minute drive away and visit 2 or 3 times per year. The owners work such long hours and the food here is absolutely gorgeous. This year we got a takeaway as we'd had a huge breakfast and as ever nothing was too much trouble and the food was delicious. When we eat there the owner allows you to take your own wine and the food is amazing and reasonably priced. If you want a 5* restaurant or plush toilet facilities go somewhere else - if you want no pretensions, gorgeous food and a fabulous sea view then I would thoroughly recommend !

Cookies is basically a seafood shack that’s expanded to include some indoor and outdoor seating and tables. So before you visit think of it like that. Don’t come with expectations of a restaurant because if they make it like that you’ll be paying restaurant prices. You are not paying restaurant prices at all. What you get is some of the best seafood available and cooked perfectly. But you are paying seafood stall prices. No it doesn’t have facilities and I don’t care. Seafood can be incredibly expensive these days and I struggle to afford it. My favourite lobster comes from here and yes I can afford it. It’s half the price of the seafood delivery van that visits my home town. I love the simplicity and the beautiful food. The owners are lovely but I suspect if you go in all guns blazing expecting a high class establishment with all the facilities, they may be a bit offended (bearing in mind the prices). So go there thinking of a good seafood stall with tables chairs and enjoy what you get because in my view it’s exceptional value for money and I feel lucky to have found it. While there don’t forget to donate to their cats service as they’re doing a sterling job. Crabbies keep up the good work. Those of us who know and appreciate what you do will always return. The ones who don’t can pay a fortune for the same food elsewhere.

The plates of crab and lobster salads looked wonderful but much better than the taste. The crab was mainly brown meat and the small piece of lobster was tasteless. Last time he complained that some of our party only wanted sandwiches, even though we were a table of four and between us spent over £70. The cheapest bread I’ve had since being a student and the while the crab meat and mackerel we ordered wasn’t bad it also wasn’t particularly good. There were 6 in our group, all spending a decent amount each and he made us feel very uncomfortable. None of us will be returning, sadly. Not a people person and no way to run a business. This is a very interesting place! You bring your own wine or beer with you, the tables and chairs are plastic, and you can ONLY order what's on the menu, no customized plates. If you try to order something a little different (no prawns, no salad, etc) you will be told in no uncertain terms that you can order ONLY things that are on the menu no matter what the accompaniments are. And it's CASH ONLY. However, having said that, the seafood was the least expensive and the BEST and FRESHEST I've ever tasted!! I ate everything on the plate, including those things I originally didn't want. Everything was scrumptious. I will definitely go back the next time I'm in East Anglia.

Had a really lovely day driving along the coast road from wells to blakeney then thought we'd stop at Dalhousie for a drink. Called in at Cookies and bought 3 cans of pop, then as there were 5 or 6 empty tables we sat down to enjoy the view. 2 mins later a foreign girl (polish maybe) came out and told us we couldn't sit there. We ignored her as we couldn't see a problem. We were actually contemplating buying a meal. She went back in then an old fish wife!! Popped out saying we couldn't sit there as we hadn't paid VAT. We argued the fact that there was plenty of seating but she stood there waving her arms like a demented crow. What a very unwelcoming pair. So rude and nasty. I had come down from the Lake District to enjoy the good old Norfolk hospitality but this place certainly let's Norfolk down. Never again will we visit it. Apparently there's a place called the Dun Cow nearby. Anyone visiting don't bother with Cookies go straight to Dun Cow. I hope this place closes as it gives a bad impression to the beautiful county of Norfolk.

We had been recommended this place by a friend and were not disappointed. It was a beautiful sunny day, we sa5 outside and both had the lobster royalle. I spoke to a customer that was leaving whosaid he’d just eaten this and it was always fab....and it was. The owner suggested bread and butter and boiled new potatoes. All was great. We had half a lobster each, cockles, anchovies, smoked haddock, prawns salad etc, a large bottle of apple juice and all for about £35. Wow. Sat outside on little tables, it was quaint and lovely. No licence, hence the apple juice but was told we could have byob. Really enjoyed everything about it.

The staff are rude and unhelpful. The food is inedible. When you try to complain, you are told to go away.

Great trip to Cookies. We had booked but with the weather being nice the owner gladly cleared a table outside for us. Had a lovely seafood salad lunch and caught the bus back to Wells then to Hunstanton. Took our own wine so all as expected really. Great value for this part of the world

the reviews on Trip Advisor were a bit mixed to put it mildly. There were four of us and we hadn't booked in. We had a small dog with us and the owners gave us a Table outside close to the coast road. You order your food in a wooden shed which is then brought to your table, the food not the shed ! They also brought treats for the dog. The atmosphere is lovely, the food is great if you like shellfish and the salads are top class. The prices are modest. The food is nicer than the photos show. There is a small sign on the door saying no cards and the toilets are along the road at the pub, 20p a go ! In my view this all adds to the charm of a unique Dining venue. The owners were charming and friendly to us but I think they don't suffer fools gladly. We loved it and will certainly return.

Our 4th or 5th visit and nothing has changed over the years what you see it what you get. Food as always fresh, quickly prepared and served. Puddings huge, we will be back and hope that it will be as it’s always been.

Unique eating experience.... great food, plastic tables and quirky service. Get your head round all of this and you'll love it, as we do.

The quaint, family run business that is Cookies is always such a pleasure to visit. The whole point of it is that it hasn’t been commercialised into a stylish restaurant but is low key for you to enjoy wonderful seafood and look out at the beautiful Norfolk landscapes.

What a curious way of greeting customers. We were a hungry party of ten. There were tables and seats available. The place wasn't busy.

Having read the poor restaurant reviews we decided to stop for some take out seafood as we were visiting the area. The crab and cockles were very nice and fresh but the lady serving not very welcoming! We visited this place years ago and at that time it had such a good reputation, it's a shame looking at the reviews, that it has gone downhill.

14 of us came along the coast for a crab lunch and landed at Cookies, from our base at the Shrine in Walsingham, we asked for a table, quite willing to split up. We were told we could only sit outside. It was quite a blustery day and whilst some of us went in to order, the others realised there were tables inside which were reserved for 2pm. It was 12.50 at this time. So we sat inside on 2 tables, happy that we would be finished lunch before 2pm when the tables were reserved ........ at this time the tables were empty!!

Visited lunchtime which was busy. I bought two prawn sandwiches and they made up two seafood platters on my own plates for me to take away. The quality of the food is very good and service prompt. I note that the majority of the people who leave bad reviews are not local, they don’t understand that this little venue wants to keep seats at tables for those having meals and spending more which is why sandwiches are take away items, I don’t have a problem with that. Neither should they. So if you want decent seafood without fuss give the place a try and accept their rules. It’s rural Norfolk, not Kensington High Street.

Cookies is what it is folks, hasn't really changed in the 8 years we've been going, if you want good fresh seafood at affordable prices give it a go. Yes, the Eastern European staff are blunt at times (but they also smile back if you treat them like humans) and Cookie & Wifey are a couple of miserable gits always have been always will be. Look beyond this and enjoy the food!

We ate here once some fifteen years ago and, having scanned recent reviews, we approached lunch with some trepidation. Without cause.

We loved this place, as locals we’ve been saying for ages we’d go for late lunch and finally got round to going with our two children and friends. The owner and staff were great, we all had good bit of banter and was chatting about our beautiful coast.

We used to buy crab and lobster from here and it was fantastic stuff. If you stick to just buying and then going it’s probably still worth it but I can’t recommend dining here.

We went to Cookies at about 11.30 in the morning during the week, after a walk along the Salthouse coast. All the tables outside were empty. We only wanted to sit down and have sandwich and a drink as we were having a meal in the evening. We ordered two crab sandwiches and drinks, but were told we were not allowed to sit outside and eat them and had to take them away. We also asked about toilets and were told they were not available. The sandwiches were disappointing as just some crab meat in supermarket sliced bread and not worth the money. My worst experience while on holiday in Norfolk.

After cutting our coastal walk short and opting for a dip in the sea as it was sooo hot, we decided to treat ourselves to an ice cream at Cookie’s under a parasol before loading the kids back into cars. Big mistake!

Food is nowhere near as good as it used to be and staff have a terrible attitude especially towards “kids” and don’t go in summer as they are closing all summer because one of the female staff stated “we are closing all summer because there are too many kids and all kids want is burgers”

Great cafe, one of the best we had been in on our 2 week holiday. Cake selection was enormous, coffee tasted great, toilets sparkling clean & friendly service. I can see why it's so popular, highly recommend!

The meals were really overpriced and disappointing, service staff were very friendly and we didn't want to complain, but a couple of the meals were pretty awful to be honest, and the rest of them barely passable for £16 odd quid each. A lentil and mushroom stew for £18 that was barely a starter size; a child's pasta for £9 that was eaten in 3 mouthfuls. All round, really delighted with kelling heath facilities, and the woodland lodge is fabulous, but the restaurant really needs an overhaul. As others have said, a captive audience shouldn't justify such overpriced poor choices

The food was fine, not amazing. Clearly prepared in advance and then reheated as it came out so fast. Starters arrived before our drinks! Nice setting, dog friendly and warm welcome.
