Started off walking into a 16th Century building with a lot of history on the walls of the building. Staff was very welcoming as we entered. We started off with the prawn cocktail what was amazing and well portioned. For our mains we both had the Fish and Chips, the fish was outstanding and the batter was just right. The sticky toffee pudding was the best i have ever tasted. Overall was an amazing lunch and will be returning soon.

Lovely team, nice bar though limited seating if you're only drinking. We visited for the weekend and the lad behind the bar recognised us and asked after our weekend plans which was nice. Very good food with some very nice touches. My chips were very slightly under, but not all of them. I have no idea how they make their peas and tartar sauce taste so good!

All of the food was well above the standards of typical gastropub food. We had the burrata and beetroots to start and an absoultely delicious squash and mascarpone risotto. We also had bangers and mash and pork puffs. These were presented excellently and again well above the average bangers and mash in presentation and flavour. The pub was very cozy on a crisp autumn day- complete with the log burners on.

We recommended meeting friends at the Crown for Sunday lunch. We had to ask for our drinks order to be taken , then waited 45 mins for our starters . Another by us had waited over an hour for their main course next to us . Food really poor. Sunday roast came with a dollop of brown looking stuff which we were told was veg all chopped up to look like purée. We then ordered green veg which we were told was an extra cost but our meal was almost finished by then. Truffle fries tasted only of Parmesan on top, no truffle . There were flies all over the restaurant, which we mentioned to the server, she apologised . The staff were apologetic, undermanned and over stretched , no attempt to communicate or ameliorate issues . There didn’t appear to be anyone on charge . Heard other people complain too. And all for a very expensive price for a roast . Such a shame . Used to be so good . !!

I was treating my family to dinner, and I chose the crown. We sat outside as it was a nice evening. The waiting staff were very nice, and took our drinks order. The menu was OK, and I was finding it difficult to choose a main, as nothing jumped out at me. We started with snacks, which were OK, then some of us ordered starters. I went for the bubble and squeak, which again was nice, but not amazing. And the other 3 starters were very basic. The staff were very accommodating for my niece, but we all found it strange that there was not a chicken dish on the kids menu or the adults. My niece will only eat certain foods, and chicken being one. The service I cannot fault, but the food was very underwhelming. The bill came to £300, but we all agreed the food did not justify the price. I will not be returning again

We went to The Crown as we had previously visited and had wonderful food. Sadly on this occasion the food was far from wonderful. It is overpriced and oversalted I had a prawn cocktail and the last time I ate there it was delicious this time it was weirdly very salty and just not great. A lot of the food was greasy too like the fish and chips and all of it lacked in flavour compared to previous visits. I also had the steak priced £27 (for a cheap cut of meat flat iron!) it was so chewy a definite one to avoid!! My daughter is autistic and is a very fussy eater (my own fault but I assumed all restaurants would have chicken breast or chicken nuggets on the menu somewhere…. But we were surprised to see there was no chicken on the children’s or normal menus!! So I asked incase, but no they didn’t have chicken breast let alone nuggets. However they did accommodate my daughter making a plain pasta for her. The staff were polite and helpful. But another thing we found strange was it was a warm evening , almost everyone was outside dining and as it got dark there were no lights just one outside light. So eating food was tricky!!! Eventually as we finished eating some tea light candles came out on tables but it was too late for us. I found it strange they were no lamps or lights around the garden area. I fact my nephew hit his head on a wooden plank as he ran in the garden due to the lack of lighting. Overall we were disappointed and decided not to try any dessert. And we won’t go back again sadly. As we feel it is far too overpriced for the food that was presented. If I am in bray again I will be going to the hinds head as this is by far streets ahead of the crown I’m Afraid.

Went on a Thursday evening in August for a meal. Staff were lovely, bright and friendly. Had a snack of Pork Croquettes, Nduja & Parmesan along with some Bread & Butter. The Pork Croquettes were very tasty. However the Bread & Butter could have been a touch fresher. Followed up with a very moorish prawn cocktail that had all the right flavours. My partner had the fish & chips for her main, which she thought was overseasoned for her taste, whilst I had the Flat Iron Steak which I thoroughly enjoyed. Finished the meal with a couple of Expresso Martinis which can only be described as divine. All in all a nice meal, but overpriced for the delivered quality

Disappointed with the Burns night supper, although the food was nice, the haggis was such a small part of the occasion, portions were smaller than expected, considering haggis, potatoes and (lumpy) swede are all so cheap this dish was not the main dish? The area we were sat in was ruined by a couple of tables shouting across to each other about the joy of being Scottish. We had champagne and water which were both left on our small table, maybe I was presumptious to expect a wine stand for the ice bucket? Staff were pleasant, atmosphere was not. Worryingly, there are two tables situated by a door that leads to the ladies toilet and is the fire escape, so women were having to sidle through the four men mansplanning the whole area. Unfortunately I am not inspired to plan a return visit.

What a lovely, lovely place! Three of us sat down on a weekday for lunch. We had, between us, for mains - the fish and chips (huge, chunky and delicious) to turkey (magnificent meat, gravy and all the trimmings) and confit duck (superb dish - just the right amount of meat on the bone with sauerkraut, potato and carrot). For dessert we had the sticky toffee pudding (looked magnificent), the pannacotta with heritage orchard fruits (turned out to be lovely quince and truly special) and the Black Forest pot au chocolat (beautifully made, delicious and not heavy at all). I want to thoroughly recommend the food, the impeccable service and the beautiful venue itself. Parking available to the rear of the building, and the garden must be wonderful when the weather's right - it looked great. Thank you so much. Highly recommended!

We were a group of 10. A very old and charming place. The service was quite nice and in a perfect speed. Never had to look for waiters, they appeared frequently and were very nice and helpful. I had the beef tartar as Appetizer which was hand cut, fresh and overall nice and recommendable. Not on the top range but good handwork. The burgers I found quite normal and not exciting. The buns seemed to be home made, but I had a quit dry one. The meat was not that good to be honest. Cooked medium but tasted not as expected. I would not order again. As dessert, we got the Creme Brûlée. Well made and delicious.

Don't be put off by the negative reviews; we nearly were. It is a pub, a proper low-ceilinged, beamed, comfy pub with proper beers. It just happens to serve amazingly good food. Not "gastro pub" food, but straightforward pub food with good size portions of beautifully cooked fresh ingredients. The fish and chips was outstanding. Service is friendly and accurate; if it was a bit slow with the first drinks it clearly prioritised getting food straight from kitchen to table.

It's a cute and atmospheric pub. For some reason I always end up going there when I go to the south of England (^^) Parking is available at the back. In the summer, you can drink outside in the courtyard or terrace. The beer was lukewarm (the lager was cold) and the selection of wine (by the glass) was small. Overpriced pub food. £40.00 for a steak. I tried to catch the eye of a young waiter to order food as I thought he was about to walk away from the table next to us. I politely said “ Excuse, when your free, may we please order “ . He looked upset and said “ I’m serving this table at the moment “ which wasn’t necessary. It felt like a telling off. A simple “ I’ll be with you in a moment “ would have sufficed. The fish and chips were average. The Mushy Peas ( which had no flavour) came in a tiny metal container that looked more like a thimble than a serving dish and the tartare sauce ( which was incredibly bland ) came in a similar sized container. I would estimate that the portion of Mushy Peas was about two heaped teaspoons full only. I wonder what they would charge if I requested another thimble of Mushy Peas? Probably a couple of pounds. We ordered a carafe of tap water which when finished was never topped up. Overpriced, overrated and pretentious. Never again thanks.

This restaurant has gone downhill. We decided to spend an evening at the crown as a treat for ourselves. We go to this restaurant from time to time over the years. After our cocktails which took a long time to come, we had to then prompt the waitress to take our order. I went for the Prawn cocktail and steak whilst my wife went for the breaded whitebait and steak along with a bottle of wine. The wine took a while to come, before our starters arrived. The Prawn cocktail was very disappointing, the prawns were extremely small and thin and of poor quality, I was expecting a thick, good quality prawn as I had experienced in the past. The cocktail with the prawns was a poor taste and low quality too. The whitebait was acceptable but nothing amazing. The steaks were of 2 differing quality, my wife’s steak was tasty but thin, whilst mine was chewy and seemed to be cooked more rare than medium rare. We had sticky toffee pudding and builders tea brûlée for dessert. The sticky toffee pudding had several sugar lumps in it, we weren’t sure if it was meant have or not, whilst the crème brûlée seemed to be cooked well but the tea flavour was not to my liking. Overall a shame that this Heston pub has gone down hill so much. Maybe we should have said something but we felt we it would have taken from our evening, although we were never asked what we thought.

Lunch today was very disappointing. Having last visited The Crown when it was under Heston's ownership it was excellent, however under the new owner the food has declined. Apart from the whitebait, everything we had was over flavoured with spices which masked the original flavour of the dishes. Cucumber gazpacho looked green but had no taste of cucumber and had too much acidic taste. The grilled plaice was over powered with the taste of tarragon. The chutneys on the cheese board were too peppery and spicy and the bread was stale. Sorry to say that I won't be returning.

I was very disappointed with my lunch here, especially given that I went 8 years or so ago and it was excellent. The menu was limited - particularly for vegetarians (there was only one option for mains). The food wasn't very nice as well, pretty adequate, and far too overpriced. After the meal we ordered some tea and coffee. Now, I don't claim to be much of a coffee connoisseur, however the latte was practically water, and the tea bag seemed like it had been used before as it would not diffuse in the hot water, and all flavour of it had been strained from it already.

Beautiful pub but the food was a bit hit and missed. On this particular occasion there was more misses and hits. The pork bites were savoury and sweet and very tasty with the Asian-flavoured dipping sauce. The soft shell crab salad was a soggy crab sitting in a very watery and tasteless “bisque” with a few soggy wet carrots. Not good at all. The pork ravioli was tasty. But my starter sized came with 3 raviolis but 1 of them was broken and it was just cooking liquid inside and not pork. My friend had the main course size and all 6 were fine. The most disappointing were the desserts. The bread pudding was very very dry. It was shouting out for a bit of custard. The tiny scoop of vanilla ice cream on top was not enough to moisten the dry stodgy pudding. The sticky toffee pudding was very very salty. The sponge itself was packed with salt and there was simply not enough toffee sauce to balance it. I gave up halfway through it.

We went to the Crown for dinner recently. It was an extremely disappointing experience. It wasn’t busy and now we know why! The quality of meat in my case was poor - fatty right through made worse by it not being cooked through making it close to inedible. My wife’s experience of a different dish was also very poor. We ordered cheese to finish and received three tasteless cheeses which seemed to have come straight from the fridge. Generally the staff were pleasant, the table was sticky and I’m told that the ladies toilets were shocking (although clean).

Disappointing. Little evidence of Heston influence. Mid-gastropub fare that any half-reasonable place can do these days and a narrow uninspiring menu choice too. Overcooked (burnt) starter broccoli fritters and our main courses tasted dull and generic (my wife swore her fries side dish were out of a frozen bag from the cut of them). We have been to the Fat Duck and Hinds Head and obviously FD is a one off gastronomic venue extraordinaire and this is intentionally a much simpler pub restaurant style place but this could have been anywhere. Kerridge’s equivalent makes this look and taste lacklustre. HH is much better. Needs a little magic dust sprinkled on the menu and ambience. Staff good. Watch the entrance - I nearly knocked myself out on the doorframe entering the place. It’s about 5ft 9in high painted black and hard to distinguish it from the dark space inside (no marks, lines or warning sign). I fell to one knee outside the door with the impact and borderline concussion later. Admittedly I am over 6ft but even my wife had to duck entering and she is 5’9”. Whilst I was down the kind waitress saw me and brought me ice in a towel - v helpful - except for the fact she said “it happens a lot”! Talk about the venue being aware of injury risk and doing nothing about it. I am not the suing kind but someone could a take less generous view sooner or later.

Interesting old pub dating back to 1380, making it the oldest building in the village. Nice selection of beers with plenty of seating inside and outside in the large garden. Good food selection and friendly staff. Expanded by incorporating old buildings on either side.

I would love this place for location and garden but every time I go it disappoints massively. Service is very amateur - young people who don't care - service is very bad and unprofessional - sorry but it needs an overhaul, such a waste of a place - staff sitting around drinking the owners profits - such a shame

The break I needed. After 2 and a half years of constant upheaval I knew where to come. Originally booking for the Wagyu I espied the specials board and went for the delicious apple and coriander soup, followed by a fantastic Beef Wellington, which I recommended to other diners and they did not need a second invitation. The pastry fell away from a beautiful cut of meat, and this all with super mash and so tasty gravy. Full, I thought, I needed a little time before I could tackle the 5 cheeses board all accompanied by appropriate red wine, LBV port and a liqueur coffee, Superb preparation for my 4 day holiday in Devon - I could not have asked for a better preparation. Thank you!
