I feel sad to write this because I can see they are trying very hard, but I wish I had persuaded our friends to go somewhere else. If you like overcooked, overworked stodgy pub food this is the place for you. If you enjoy fresh contemporary food don’t come here. Last night they had run out of Sea Bass and substituted Cod which was cooked very well (not over done) , so I know they can cook. But the rest of it was terrible. New potatoes under a thick blanket of pink unidentifiable sauce … why? New potatoes with mint and butter are delicious! Overcooked peas and straggly tender stem brocoli …. Why? I can’t cook but I can cook a pea!!! Made the wrong choice with the starter of ‘pork belly bites with hoisin sauce’. Really? I thought that was pink mayonnaise? And the pork … overcooked, greasy and horrible. Thank God the dog was nearby ……..

Unfortunately the food is terrible and expensive. Tried eating there twice under the new management but wont be eating there again, which is a shame. On a positive the The Crown is in a great location for a cold beer or two and to soak up the sun. The green is great for your kids/dog(s) to run free.

I am very disappointed at the way we have been treated. I made a reservation online for 4 people for dinner at 7.30pm on Christmas Eve. I was on holiday abroad until 21 December and when I managed to check my junk mail on 22 December I found a message saying that they had seen my booking for 7.30 but they were now closing the kitchen at 6pm on Christmas Eve so asking me to change the booking to 5.45pm. I telephoned and spoke to them and confirmed we would come at 5.45pm. I had guests arriving from Worcester to stay for Christmas. Imagine our disappointment when we duly arrived at 5.45pm for dinner to be told the kitchen had closed at 5pm. They apologised and we were lucky to find a table across the road at the King's Arms, however I am angry and disgusted. I telephoned today to speak to the manager to be told that nobody was there until 12.00. I asked for someone to ring me but nobody has. We are regular customers who live in Cookham but unless somebody gets in touch and offers more than an apology we will never go to the Crown again.

As you can see from all those older 1 star reviews this lovely pub in a prime position on the edge of the beautiful historic village and moor has had a succession of hopeless managers. At last it's under a new management team who are doing it justice with a fresh looking refurbishment, proper service and great food. We only had a light lunch but the difference since our last visit a couple of years ago is amazing. The Crown is definitely back on our list and well worth a visit.

Coming from Maidenhead I know the Crown well...Now living out of area I always classed the Crown as a safe bet for good food and pleasant surroundings when returning for a visit... Called in for a pub lunch before a long drive home, we were handed a beer stained tatty menu with several dishes not available. being short on time we ordered anyway. to say poorly prepared would be an understatement and clearly very cheap ingredients used. Before leaving the I popped into the toilet, if I had of done this before ordering I would have walked straight out...It looked like toilets hadn't been cleaned for weeks along with the bar floor. I would advise to steer well clear until The Crown sorts it's act out and returns to the standard we expect of Cookham

Myself and my friends were out for the evening in Cookham, when we arrived at the Crown it was empty and there was a unpleasant smell. We got our very over priced drinks and sat down. A few of us went for a cigarette and made a joke about the smell in which the bar maid stuck her head out the door and said ‘you can finish your drinks and F*** Off’ We went back in side and finished our drinks when the landlord came downstairs and also told us to ‘F*** Off’ Im shocked how disgusting the staff were. Such a waste for a nice pub to be run by such horrible people. Last time I will go to that pub and I will continue to tell people to avoid this place.

Pre booked a table for 11, parked in car park went for walk came back to pub for a drink before sitting down to eat. I knew as soon as I tried to order drinks that there was likely to be issues eating here. For a pub in between Xmas and New Year to have no ale at lunchtime - one of which is sourced from the excellent Rebellion brewery not 5 miles away - was a portent for things to come. Had it not been a family get together I'd have walked away at that point. I offered to go there and get a a keg for them, to which the answer was "yes please if you could that'd be great" To lunch. Sat at table, and then waited 30 mins for order. Post order, another 30 mins for food, plus about 15 mins between first food arriving and last food arriving, The 12 inch pizza arrived as 2x7inch "we didn't have a 12inch base" (i.e. no frozen 12 inch pizzas in freezer), my own "deluxe" burger was dry and over cooked, and generally the whole thing was a bit of a shocker. I did complain, along with others, who it seemed had been waiting an age for just chips for example, and was given a 15% refund. Not enough in my books, but at least some remedy. However, I would caution all that decide to eat here. Everything is done on the cheap, but charged at a premium. Oh, and don't expect any heating. The manager / owner told me she owned the pub but if it is owner managed, she doesn't know how to run a business. My advice. Avoid.

This pub has so much potential and it’s such a shame that the owners aren’t capitalising on this.We stopped for a quick drink on a Sunday afternoon after a winters walk.Firstly, the fire wasn’t lit, which was a shame. There was also a drain/bleach smell which got stronger near the toilets. It was quite unpleasant and I was glad that we weren’t eating. The table was also sticky although had obviously been cleaned prior to our visit. The mismatch of chairs doesn’t work. It isn’t quirky and just looks a mess. The smell needs addressing, as does the cleanliness of the toilets. For a Sunday lunchtime in December it was worryingly empty. It’s a great pub but they need to up their game if it’s going to survive!

As a local we have given this pub many chances because the location is so great, especially in the summer. Sadly we are always disappointed one way or another. Visited yesterday for an evening drink, there was one waitress and one bartender. Service behind the bar is always so slow, the bartender had to go down and change the lines for 5-10 mins. I tried a different beer to last time as the last one was flat and had to be returned, however the other beer was flat also! Stacks of empty dirty glasses line the bar, and the waitress walked around for 5 minutes with the same pizzas trying to locate the people who ordered them - and the pub was barely busy! This could be such a great place if they put the effort and more staff in!

I couldn't rate the pub because we didn't stay. We thought we wanted a pub lunch with friends yesterday; used to enjoy the Crown in the past but on this day, we left without ordering. The place appeared to be under new management...balloons, notice on the chalk board, etc. But it had no warmth, even on a rainy afternoon, without a fire going and feeling chilly throughout. The table where we sat with a drink was sticky all over. Uncomfortably so. The back room had chairs stacked up; all the other alcove rooms were just bare, cold and dark. It had no atmosphere at all. We made the decision to eat elsewhere in Cookham since this is a wonderful little town for pubs. With competition fierce, it's a mystery why the Crown doesn't do something to warm up its interior, clean the place and make people feel like they want to come in and stay awhile. Won't be returning.

I stay in this area often but this was my first stay here. It’s a good pub in the centre of a great village with the rooms at a bit of a premium due to the location. The rooms are clean and well maintained although I did clock the low mattress when I walked in. The rooms look great but I was disappointed that all I got for a £100 was two mini soap bars as toiletries. Fortunately I had brought shower gel with me. The worst bit was the bed which had a hard and lumpy mattress despite having quality pillows and duvet so was very difficult to sleep on. It was all a bit odd. The pub was fine: service was good but they’d had a problem so it was full of smoke so my clothes stank of it. Decidedly average but I just visited on a bad night.

Disappointing. Staff were great, timings were good, atmosphere was nice, but the pub was filthy, with sticky drink stains and dead flies all over the window sills. Our table was also really really sticky from years of use and could do with being re-varnished. There were a lot of staff on, which was great as it was clearly the reason service was efficient, but perhaps one of them could have run a cloth around. The food, although absolutely fine, did not warrant the price tag and was on the whole just “fine”. - I resent paying £11.50 for 6 slices of beef tomato and some mozzarella, but no point complaining as the staff don’t set the price. So all in all, friendly staff, but price point is way off. Perhaps better just to stop for a quick drink next time...?

Okay new favourite restaurant for us. Service was fantastic. Very attentive and friendly. The menu traditional but very well done and good value. Food was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. Well done everyone at The Crown!

Would recommend this restaurant/bar especially after a lovely walk in Cookham. Good menu choice, fresh food and quick, courteous service. Plenty of outside tables so you could take your dogs

Booked for a Sunday lunch and on arrival were greeted with a warm welcome. However the menu was a bit odd with light bites and just pizzas and burgers and not what we were expecting from a pub menu. There were a couple of specials but still not much variety. Luckily as it was Sunday they did roast chicken and beef, so we ordered these. The roasts were very good with good portions, great roast potatoes and vegetables. Our waiter was a great young guy very friendly and attentive. We had a good meal but not sure we would return due to the odd menu.

Ate here with 9 colleagues this week. The menu is pretty simple but there are some gems. The steak and ale pie was delicious and their fat chips are also very good. Also the starter buckets are worth trying, especially the whitebait. The bill for 10

I/we were a bit disappointed in the limited menu but understandably it was late'ish on a Saturday night, overall a good experience and the 'Crown' itself is warm & friendly place to visit...

The service was excellent. Warm welcome, incredibly efficient and pleasant waiting staff who were both attentive and made you feel, quite genuinely, at home. The food itself was good, if not spectacular. The beef was tasty, if a little fatty, the roast potatoes were similarly good, although could have done with a bit longer in the oven. The yorkshire pudding was excellent, and the gravy very nice. Others in our group had pizza (6/10), a decent topping if a slightly chewy base.

Pleasant location in Cookham over looking the green. Plenty of out door benches. Smart and comfy inside, friendly bar staff. Food over priced and under quality. Steak and ale pie okay but chips and peas lacked quality. Pizza was pale and tasteless. Mushroom gary wax was in fact a pancake.

We stopped in for a quick coffee while out walking (there are many pleasant walks nearby). The welcome was warm and friendly, the coffee was good, the service was prompt and the price was reasonable. A bonus is the bar area is dog friendly so we were able to sit inside with our dogs while drinking our coffees.

Staff were great - I have to say the poor rating is nothing to do with them. The waiter and waitress could not have done more. They were balanced and attentive.

Really nice gastro pub with friendly professional staff. Good choice of food. My wife had cod wrapped in smoked salmon, I had beef and ale pie. Both of them to die for. Can't fault it.

We met friends for a meal last night. As we have a cocker spaniel, we had booked a table and got a lovely private space behind the fire. The service, as well as the food knowledge, was brilliant. Kelly was well up to speed on both the food and drink menu. The food was excellent. Nothing overly fancy, just great well cooked meals. Congratulations to Greg, the chef. This was the second meal we ate here while on holiday and wish we could eat more often. The pub is beautifully clean and well decorated and the staff are excellent. Nothing is too much trouble and they are very friendly. Well worth a visit.

Just moved into the area and have visited the crown a couple of time. It's not a village pub where you go to meet people but it's a nice pub and the staff are all very nice. Had dinner there the other night and they had no issues to me changing the chips with my meal for mashed potatoes. The steak and ale pie I had was very nice! If you passing and want a drink and/or food then I'd recommend the crown. And if you can't park in their car park the there a free car park at the other end of 'the moor' which is a very short walk. Well worth a try and the Thames is a short walk away too

It's good; just not amazing. I was actually a bit apprehensive after some of the reviews I read; but I shouldn't have been.We had a very reasonable lunch; the salad was particularly good. Room for the night was quite small; but not small considering the price with a large bathroom. Breakfast was really very good. The pub itself was really nice and the London pride was great. I would definitely recommend it.

Hubby and I dropped in on our way from work last night and enjoyed meeting Andy, the crown's new chef. The steak pies were excellent - they have not taken them off the menu which has been drastically reduced.Nice, as always to see the lovely Kirstie too. Thanks for a nice supper. It was a nice way to end the day.

It looks great and it's in a great location, but there the plaudits end. Small selection of beers, very pricey food and limited menu (although the steak and ale pie was good), and very smelly toilets. The extractor fan in the gents was covered in thick greasy dust, so I don't think much thorough cleaning is done. Using the facilities is very unpleasant. Some staff were friendly, but some made me feel I was interrupting them.

2nd time I have visited in the last year and I was pleased to be looked after by the wonderful Kelly again! Always very professional and passionate about the food adding personal recommendations - and she never lets my glass get empty! I will most certainly be back! The Calves liver is a must try cooked to perfection.

This place used to be fine for lunch. Since it's been taken over the menu has changed for the worse. All the items on the menu are either deep fried or incredibly unhealthy. The staff look like they need a good bath. Poor attitude and very unhygienic - we both were up all night with sickness and bloated stomachs.

Had been for a walk alongside the River Thames and stopped here for a drink. The range of beers was good. Service was friendly and efficient. We sat outside in the sun, which was very pleasant. Overall a very good visit. I can't comment on the food but the food being eaten by visitors looked good.

This was a welcome place to rest weary feet after a walk along the Thames. The pub is unattractive inside and out but it does have a nice view over grassland from the courtyard garden. Friendly service and a surprisingly delicious light lunch, a sort of flat bread with a choice of fillings, good value at £7. My pint of the Crown's own beer was full of dregs and had to returned. If I was in Cookham again, I would seek out The Bounty right beside the river.

Happened to be in the area, so not a planned visit. Pint of lager and bottle of cider £9.75! Sat outside, ordered food, nothing on the menu that was Sunday lunch related, and nothing in the chalkboard inside regarding Sunday lunch, so assumed that it was available. Ordered a Crown Burger and BLT. The burger was not cooked throughout and a little too pink on the inside, the chips were just awful, not crispy on the outside, just soggy with oil, they were left. BLT OK, but bacon was quite salty......

Came here for dinner with a friend, ordered the Gluten free based pizza - served under cooked!! Asked for another one in which they served the same pizza again, still undercooked and had been thrown back together on the plate (quite literally). Sent back again! Meanwhile my friend had already finished her food. I finally did receive a pizza which looked much better. Wish it didn't take so long.

Been hearing about this amazing Italian night on fab and was keen to try it, sadly the base of my pizza was black, half the toppings were not on the pizza that we ordered, the base sauce was poor and there was not a hint of oregano as suggested in sprinkles in the menu. I don't mind eating pizza with my hands but one should not assume everyone feels the same. Jolly farmer know how to do pizza suggest you talk to them.

This is more of a heads up for people, friends of ours are getting married there this week, we booked a room with some wedding code rubbish they told us to use. If you’re getting married here don’t give your guests the code! It’s a complete joke we’re unable to attend due to the children being ill, the code is basically a way for them to make money as it’s a non refundable rate! 1: it makes the rooms cost more then normal 2: if you book normally you can cancel up to 4pm the day before! As I’ve just found out they’ve took £162 out of my account for a room I’m not even going to stay in nor am I able to attend! Steer clear of this place, their customer service team couldn’t give a toss they just take your money!

Went there on a Saturday nite live music, which was very good, lots of choice on tap , service behind the bar was good considering how busy it was

well having read some of the more negative reviews for the hotel, i wasn’t sure what to expect .. however, the negative reviews are just nothing we experienced, to the contrary - all the staff were absolutely brilliant. on hand to attend to matters, Anneleise worked tirelessly and ensured our 2 night stay was totally spot. the rooms are warm and cost, clean -serviced in the day there’s a cosy feel and whilst we only had the breakfast as we were in windsor to visits friends, the food was plentiful it is a great position for anywhere you need to be in than that area, not far from the motorway and not on busy roads would we go back - yes, for the value for money and staff friendless it’s 5/5 from us 👍

Food very good, service absolutely abysmal. We were not made welcome. Would not recommend. When I asked for two glasses of wine after the meal I was told to go to the bar.

My friend and I found this little gem of a place by chance while in the area Geocaching. This place was so good! With a warm welcoming atmosphere. The management and staff were friendly and courteous throughout. It has a beautiful outdoor garden with a lovely aroma and a paved area with tables under a trellis with foliage, it is pretty, and just opposite the river Thames. They also have a playground nearby with a small crazy golf. The breakfast was value for money. With no frills and no fuss, everything is freshly cooked to order. Great location with good parking £5 for the whole day We will certainly be back when in the area again
