Wanted to try it after a decades long break. The ‘Village’ lunch menu was chosen and the service was excellent. Would like to see and try a few different mains. The ‘by the glass’ wine choice was limited and thought to be expensive.

My first visit to the Crown (and last) - my wife and I were staying locally with a friend and the three of us went for an evening meal. I’d looked at the menu beforehand and it looked promising. We’d recently had an excellent meal in Scott’s of Mayfair (excellent) , also listed in the Michelin guide, and prices were very similar to the Crown. Unfortunately the food wasn’t! I ate from the a la carte menu, my companions from the village menu. The quality from both was poor. The others had burgers , very small and unsucculent. The village menu seems a bargain at £26.95 but never mind the price, it should be good quality and it simply wasn’t. My sea bass was OK though £36 is a high price, but a dessert costing £12 (the cheapest dessert on the a la carte menu) should be something special. Mine wasn’t - it was a very small portion of tasteless sponge like substance with what seemed to be a squirt of aerosol cream on the side. Our waiter was excellent, service was good. Top London prices but Wetherspoons quality at best.

As a customer that has previously had an amazing experience in this restaurant, I think the way that Amber has responded to the negative review given by Alan is really honest and it is unfortunate that Alan had a bad experience . I can only say we found the staff and food at this restaurant excellent and unfortunately staff can get ill and the restaurant tried to do the honourable thing and stay open.

Sadly we were all disappointed. We’d been to his previous restaurant (The Beehive) many, many times and always had a great time, so expectations are high for a place recommended by the Michelin guide. This time all servers were fine, but the speed of service was unbelievably slow. We had to ask for menus. We had to ask for the order to be taken. We had to ask where our food was. Repeatedly we were told that the chef was by himself in the kitchen. Why is this a concern of the customer??? It took two and three quarters hours to get starters, then mains with two having dessert. Also the quality of the food presented was below what we had before at the beehive. Sad. We had another reservation with other friends for two weeks time. Will we return? No way Jose.

My husband found out the chef/owner of The Crown, used to be the chef The Beehive, and previously the Royal Oak at Paley Street. We used to eat there a lot, and we really loved the food. Took loads of friends and family. So we were delighted to re acquaint ourselves with his wonderful food. It was actually our wedding anniversary, but we didn't tell them as we didn't want any fuss. The staff were just lovely, nothing was too much trouble. All four of us had the delicious fish soup to start. Then 2 of us had the rabbit lasagne, it was as good as we remembered it. I used to have it all the time. We took my parents. My dad chose a second starter too, he had the paté, and my husband had the John Dory. It was a lovely way to spend our anniversary and we will be back.

Lovely setting, very friendly and competent staff. Interesting wine - a Canterbury Rose sparkling rosé from Kent. Brilliant food - fish soup and a sensational John Dory with a chive sauce and samphire. Not the biggest portions but suits me fine. Lovely to have their signature dish of rabbit lasagne again. The food is quite expensive though there is also a more affordable 'Village Menu' which is a good idea.

I organised my Works' End Of Year Event at The Crown and is was wonderful. Amber and her team were so attentive and the detail in the evening was perfect. The food and service were both superb and Amber and co. all went above and beyond to ensure the evening was seamless. The pub was decorated with Christmas props so it felt really warm and cosy. There were quite a few food changes on the day and someone from my work party didn't turn up, but nothing was too much for any of the team, even with last minute changes which lots of people would have found stressful. I am looking forward to going to the Crown again in the next couple of weeks for lunch with my boss and another colleague and am planning on hosting my Christmas End Of year Event 2024 there again. Second visit this year and both experiences excellent. Food and service are top notch Dominic Chapman style. Love the building as well. Had to start with the historic scotch eggs, always a feature of Dominic’s menus. Loved my arancini followed by a fabulous vegetable tagliatelle in a tarragon cream sauce. So many lovely lingering savoury flavours that I didn’t want to spoil them with a dessert, however tempting it was.

Second time back and yet again the food did not disappoint. I had to go for the rabbit lasagne again and I think it was even better then before! A absolute dream starter :) the rib of beef was next level too, the only issue was that there was no room left for dessert! This is starting to be one of my favourite places to eat. However the service was bitterly disappointing on this occasion. Untrained staff who on this shift were more interested to be their phones behind the bar then to offer a service. Still can’t fault the food ! Just perfect !

I was nervously anticipating potential disappointment having swerved the sister restaurant, the Beehive, as this has definitely gone down hill such that I dont visit any more. But working locally at White Waltham Airfield, an alternative was my motivation. What a great surprise. The premises are small and cosy, comfortably furnished and nicely lit. The welcome was first rate and super friendly/inviting. The menu was appropriate for the season and caused a dilemma as there were several items I was keen to sample. In the end I had the most amazing Mackerel Pate on toast, though the dish could improve if it hadn't been spread onto the toast for me; better served separate to the toast as then the bread stays warm against the chilled pate, The Venison was maybe the best I have ever had. Perfectly cooked, tender and subtly flavoured. The fondant for desert was delicious but sadly didn't seem freshly made as the sponge was a little crusty..... I am being picky as I loved the meal, the service was spot on and we were not rushed out even though 5pm was approaching from our 2pm start. I will return which is the mark of a good restaurant.

Decided to try the Crown since the new owners took over. Nice atmosphere with very good service which in todays post pandemic world isn’t something you can say about everywhere. My wife had the rabbit lasagna to start with. Good portion, nicely plated up and really tasty. My Smoked eel was ok. Nothing to write home about. My wife’s Duck main was excellent. Great cherry sauce with fondant potato. My sea bass too was good although I thought the whole dish a bit over salted. I’m fact we found all the dishes a little salty, surprising really as we’ve found so many dishes under seasoned recently. A very decent carafe of US Pinot noir accompanied the food. All in all very nice but despite the other dishes being priced about right, my one fillet of sea bass at £28 was I thought expensive. Finally nice to have somewhere local to have very decent food and excellent service

Crab, fresh, generous and exciting with crunchy Cashews and Apples. Turbot with Huge Prawns and pan juices exceptional, Treacle Sponge with perfect Vanilla Ice Cream, a school boys-girls delight!Coffee, Macaroons made perfectly with Armagnac all with a fairly decent bottle of Riesling £75...We hope the Crown re-opens in what are horrific times for Pubs because as I said in my opinion its the best in its class.

Cosy pub with a nice fire and a nice "homely" feel.Truly awful paintings cover most of the walls - apparently painted by one of the owners. Nasty 1960's wallpaper on the ceiling! Family run with professional, friendly service. Pre-meal freebie was a cup of pumpkin puree with dried onion flakes and onion seeds. Was OK but too bland and too much. One starter was their speciality crab which was lovely - superbly fresh white crab meat with bits apple and cashews - the additions adding very little. The other starter was a game and lentil pate. I have no idea how they sliced such a measley small piece - the thickness of a pound coin and 2" diameter - for anout £15... Didn't taste of much either an seemed at least 50% lentils. FOr the main dish we had the dvenison pie. - enormous in pastry terms; Ok for meat content although not exactly generous and loads of nice sauce.....served with unpleasant (steamed?) chunks of parsnip, punmpkin and perhaps celeriac with small amounts of spnach and green beans? - To chef: they need roasting and caramelised to have any flavour. Didn't bother with pud.... Wines..Two wine lists - their everday always available - very very limited list and not inspiring. Their blacboard list which changes as supplies run out and with an average bottle price of circa £225 for the reds... They were nio worth the money. Overall, the food was OK, the prices silly. Won't go back....

I was welcomed and remembered on entering this tiny Pub and that always makes me feel good!I’m always struck by how nice and clean the Bonwick family keep this Pub too.I had a tartlet with my Champagne which was made up of a delicate pastry shell, Humus, Smk Almond and pickled Lemon. Moorish!Lovely bread rolls made in house, a glass of Hugel Riesling with a very simple but majestically poised Crab dish, that demonstrated superb shellfish produce and controlled balance of citrus flavors. We both had Veal Fillet cooked on string, the old fashioned French way of cooking finer cuts of meat. The meat was from Charolais and the “rather nice Marrow Sauce” had an extraordinary glossiness about it that’s unseen ever before anywhere else by my wife and I. This is numbingly exquisite cooking, and we’ll travel to eat it, we shared a bottle of chateau batailly 2009 recommended by the George, and we haggled with him and got that down from £90 to £70 it’s worth haggling here.Deserts where Rhubarb Cheese Cake with Coconut Ice Cream, delicious it was too. This was the baked kind and it had a certain homeliness about it which was welcome, not at all Cheffy. Glasses of Sauternes drained we had Coffee with excellent Pistachio Macaroon. Service by the Chefs family is attentive, fun and simply charming!Utterly recommend the Crown.

Went here for dinner last week and my overall opinion was that the food was good but I would question why it has a Michelin star - all it has achieved here is higher prices. If you are looking for any bells or whistles in your cooking then this is not the place for you. It is the basics done well and no more. The food is very much British despite the manager claiming they are a French restaurant. I had the crab to start which was very fresh, clean and pleasant. The lamb that followed was beautifully cooked with a rich deep sauce with bags of flavour. To finish I had the syrup sponge which was a very average and a bit disappointing. Tasted fine but no better that a good quality ready meal. Service is excellent.I’d say the wine list needs some work too. The written list is overly French which I usually avoid in restaurants as there is little value to be had in France. The plus is that all wines are available by the glass. Then the blackboard has further wines which are “odds and sods” rather than being a well-chosen list.So overall I enjoyed it but feel there is plenty of room to improve.

Great little restaurant, really good food, venison pie is a must. Lovely atmosphere and a good wine selection. Just one small gripe is paper napkins, other than that it's very good. Will be visiting again.

Part of going out, for me, is the welcome and the service as much as the food. This restaurant is genuine on all fronts, we were the first in for a Sunday lunch, as we approached the door was opened for us. A warm welcome at the bar, and as we ordered the Maitre D' said "oh Dad likes to do roast potatoes on a Sunday". The food was delicious, the service impeccable, presentation ace, it hits all the spots. You can tell this family are proud of their restaurant and care about all aspects of it, including treating their guests to a top time. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for and some. Ps the roast potatoes were fab!

We received a warm welcome and had a drink in the quirky bar, stacked with piles of cookery books! The waiter mentioned, unprompted, my dietary restrictions which they had noted on booking, and suggested some minor changes to the menu.

We took friends for a thank you dinner and all of us had an absolutely wonderful meal and wine. I had crab pate and lamb rump - both were delicious! Also worth mentioning that our waiter was very knowledgeable and able to answer all questions and adjust meals for allergies and dietary preferences. We will be back!

We love our meals at The Crown - the food is always excellent & well worth the prices charged, which reflect the outstanding ingredients and the unique skills of the chef. We are spoilt for choice in this area (we visit the Waterside, Hand & Flowers at Marlow and Royal Oak at Paley St at least annually) and eat at The Crown most of all.

I was delighted to recently discover this place was only a 5-10 min drive from home. To fully appreciate the pub I think its useful to know a little about who owns the pub and how they manage it. It's very interesting! Service (from the owners various offspring) was friendly and polite. The atmosphere was classy, but informal. Nice, tiny but cosy bar for a pre dinner drink just off the main room with around 10 tables. My main grumble I'm afraid is the steep prices. The food was good, no question about that. But relatively simple. With mains floating around the £30 mark I just wasn't as impressed as I thought I might be. My rabbit pate starter was exceptionally small. My other slight gripe is the menu. We dined in the height of summer so were quite surprised to find venison pie, slow cooked lamb (it was delicious though) and treacle pudding on the very small menu. I don't know, maybe I'm being picky. I just didn't come away feeling that we got value for money here. Definitely worth a try if you can afford it.

My son and daughter treated me to a Father’s Day lunch! Excellent from start to finish, the complimentary canapés, bread, vegetables etc was very refreshing as most places charge extra, here everything comes complete. Highlights were the crab and halibut beautifully cooked really showing off the quality of produce. A very enjoyable lunch! I look forward to returning.

There were some good points - the sauces were excellent, the beef cooked perfectly - but lots of disappointments. The starters were bland - a rabbit pate with little taste. The vegetables with the mains were boring. We had syrup sponge for pudding and my daughter said she preferred the one at school. Was good to try, but wont be going back. We were there for Father’s Day and there were several empty tables, which suggests its not that popular

We picked the Crown from the good food guide. Nothing in the starter menu had any appeal so we chose fish of the day..... it was £38 each and my haddock was cold with some carrots, runner beans and mashed potato.

The Crown manages to retain its traditional character whilst offering first class food. I have eaten here many times and whether you want a great Scotch egg, a really well done burger, or a full dinner it doesn't disappoint. A great selection of ales and a good wine list is a bonus and the atmosphere is casual and relaxed. Advisable to book a table in the evening but also has an outside seating area which is great on warmer evenings. .

Restaurant owners we rate recommended The Crown to us and we finally made it out there. It looks like a village pub from the outside. We had a nice glass of wine at the bar served by a knowledgable person who ran down to the cellar to get some extra bottles when we expressed curiosity about the wine list. We noticed several very good-looking young people working in the room and these turned out to be the owners kids. They may be young but they take their jobs seriously and we received good service throughout. There were no amazing taste moments during our dinner but the food was good and the menu short but intriguing and unpretentious, which I appreciate in this day and age. The prices of the main courses were ridiculously high in comparison with cooking at the same level outside of London, so I cannot say that this restaurant provided good value for money. Aside from that, I enjoyed our visit and would be happy to go again to see what else this slightly eccentric place can do.

The Crown will always be one of our favourite restaurants. We haven’t managed to get over there for a while and when a close friend was visiting from New York we knew it was a perfect opportunity to visit and introduce her to the fabulous food, service and staff. As expected we were not dissapointed. Service was second to non as always. The food was out of this world. Our guest eats in some if the best restaurants worldwide and truly loved what The Crown has to offer in all aspects, food, service, wine and ambiance.

We arrived last Saturday. It was cold but the fire was lit and we were offered a drink at the bar but by the time Id locked the car my friends were at the table. Driving, we had to be careful so we started with no alcohol beer and ha d look at a small menu helped by the son of the owner. Nice to have a knowledgeable server.

My wife surprised me with a booking at the Crown. We had been meaning to try it since it was recommended by friends. First impression is of an elegant unpretentious pub with an unassuming air about it. We had a drink at the bar (excellent wine list including by the glass, and if you feel extravagant cellar options up to £500 and beyond!) and a short menu with 3 - 5 starters and 3 - 5 mains. I had the slow cooked organic pork with Calvados Apple - seriously good pork and decent portion, while my wife had the slow cooked Lamb - steam cooked, pink but no blood. Both excellent. This followed an excellent rabbit pate and a good citrusy crab starters.

Food was fine but nothing memorable - inflated prices. Staff (children of the chef?) are overly pleased with themselves and their restaurant. For the most part I can't remember what we had to eat now it was so underwhelming. What I do remember is that they served white rolls - no option - which looked and tasted as though they came from a packet in a supermarket. We were recommended The Crown two weeks previously by staff at The Beehive in White Waltham. Go there instead - it's excellent.
