The Crown in Dover

A fabulous overnight stop in our campervan. We had a very warm welcome from Dylan who looked after us very well. The bar & restaurant was very busy however Dylan’s professionalism as a server made his job appear easy! Our food was served in a timely manner, piping hot and so delicious! The pastry on the vegetable tart was so tasty with added herbs. The gammon steak burger with an egg was very moreish. Now to the sticky toffee pudding with piping hot custard, a decent size portion, thank goodness we shared! Believe me when I say this is a lovely pub with scrumptious food, & fabulous service from Dylan

Good food great pub but I don’t want the landlady sanding the tables all night I want an evening chilling not listening to that all evening when we said something we got dirty looks so we left a shame I like the landlord and pub

We visited today and have to say the food was the best we have had in a while there!!!!! It was amazing and so reasonably priced - on a Sunday they do a "pizza and BBQ" day. Everything was delicious, staff great and pretty location, do give it a visit xx

A delicious lunch today. Home cooked ham, chips and peas. Food and drinks all reasonably priced. Thank you to chef and kind attentive bar staff.

The food is lovely, very well cooked and good quality produce. We had the burger and the fish and couldn't fault either of them. There are a good selection of starters, of which we tried 3 and enjoyed all. After two courses you will probably be pretty full, but if you fancy a a pudding I can recommend the sticky toffee pudding which was a perfect way to complete the meal. The staff were short handed, but coped well and always had time to smile. My only criticism is a lack of choice with regards to ales, but hopefully more trade will enable them to have a better selection. Definitely well worth a visit..

Thought we would give this place a try for a Sunday roast today and it will be the first and last time. So things started off ok, the starters were ok, edible shall we say. Then the mains arrived, a very over cooked, dry “slow roast” (apparently) beef, and a pork belly (slab of fat) with a piece of crackling the size of a 50p piece. This was served with a very soggy deflated Yorkshire pudding, roast (hair dried) potatoes and “all the trimmings” a few very over cooked sprouts, broccoli and carrots. Now there was a splash of “gravy” / grease dashed over the top, so I asked for some gravy, and received a jug of grease. Now I hadn’t eaten anything today up until this point and I was told not to complain by the other half. Do yourselves a favour, do not come here for a roast. My honest opinion…. The worst roast I have ever been served. ⭐️ 1 star and that’s only because the server was polite and friendly.

I was really excited about visiting this pub for lunch after reading the astounding reviews but honestly, it couldn’t have been further from what I read online! I’m going to get straight into it and keep it sort and sweet. Mediocre service and a distinct lack of people skills from staff. The “House Cheese burger” well, I wouldn’t have even gave it to my dog! Frozen patty, More of a fried onion burger. Even after leaving a full plate of food wasn’t even asked why? Far from dog friendly.. you can take your dogs in there but quite clearly not warmly welcomed. Overall, I can only imagine the reviews are from the locals are revisiting and reviewing more on a personal level of support for the owner than for the quality of service or food. Steer clear.. there’s a co op not too far away!

En route to Dover to catch a ferry to Dunkirk, we googled places to park for the night in our motorhome and this place came up, no charge if you have a meal. The staff were absolutely fantastic, a very tall South African lad, who's name I have unfortunately forgotten and a girl called Elly, or something similar. They couldn't have been more helpful if they were forced at gunpoint. The food was superb, homemade scotch egg starter with salad, starter for me, beautiful prawn cocktail for my wife. Delicately flavoured amazing Katsu curries for us both, with the most fantastic, chunky, crisp chips as a side dish. All cooked perfectly. I will definitely be using this place again, when this awful covid business is over and we can resume our regular trips to Germany. In the meantime, I would wholeheartedly recommend this place to anyone, not only motorhome owners.

Had dinner here this evening. Limited menu which was a shame. Food was OK - chicken burger and fish & chips. Covid security on site however was pretty much non existent. Fairly packed indoor bar area, lack of screens at bar area, no test & trace info asked for. Didn’t stay for dessert - just wanted to get out if there!

We are visiting for a weekend away, walking to this pub from our bnb, The Brambles. Serves good pub grub and clearly a local favourite with the regulars in the bar singing away giving a good atmosphere. The recent bad reviews did worry us about going but think people need to remember pubs are doing the best they can in the current climate. No complaints to from us.

Myself and family have been here for lunch now twice in the same week?! We went last week and sat in the garden. The table service was great, staff friendly and the food was delicious. My niece commented it was the best burger she has ever eaten?!! The landlords wife was very lovely and gave alot of attention to my daughter and niece. Thank you for two yummy lunches, we will be back again soon xx

Disappointed that a special (LOCKDOWN) menu which consisted of "mums been to Iceland and bought another load of sh#t". It's a shame when the government are paying the 50% difference, surely it should be the normal menu (unless it is!). At least Gordon Ramsey will make a shed load of cash when he visits to shoot his next "Kitchen nightmares". Disappointed as another restaurant taking advantage of the "Eat Out" scheme.

My partner and I, along with my best friend and his wife ate at The Crown on Wednesday 12th August. We were taking advantage of the government scheme ‘eat out to help out’. However this should not have compromised the quality of food, drink or service, as the proprietors receive the discount from the government. 2 different full menu options were presented. I did not choose the covered mushrooms as we were told they were cooked in garlic, so I chose a second option. However, upon serving, we found that they weren’t in garlic! My friend and I both wanted steak as our main course from the ‘set menu’, but we were told that they had sold out. My second choice was gammon, egg and chips. The gammon was good but the egg was very small and over-fried. There were very few chips. My friend’s wife then found a HAIR in her salad. When the landlord’s wife/partner was notified of this she simply threw the hair on the floor! With prompting she brought another plate for the lasagna bowl to go on and asked if we wanted the salad transferred to that plate too! Needless to say, we didn’t! However, the young lady barmaid (who has served us on previous visits), was exemplary as always, and was shocked to hear of the ‘hair experience’ when we spoke upon leaving. Also my Fosters glass was so heavily frosted/grained because of lack of salt in the glass washer that it was actually rough to the touch and very unpleasant to drink from. Again, this was pointed out to staff. All in all not a very good experience or value for money. We fully support local pubs, but vast improvements are required here.
