Took a chance with this place following reviews, the pub itself was a little bit tired but that was more than made up with the welcome from the staff and service. Our order for food was taken to the extra mile for my wife, who is a vegetarian, an alternative the to the menu was offered and accepted. The food was fantastic and the staff clearly understand the clientele very well, we also had the dessert of apple crumble, which was enormous and very satisfying, well done to whoever baked this dish. All in all a great meal and service from the ladies who made us welcome and looked after us all.

Our first visit to this long established pub beside the river Stour. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the food was good. My husband especially commends the steak pie. Portions are generous, so light eaters may want to opt for the smaller size, which is available for some dishes. We would certainly visit again when we are next in that area.

A nice location , close to the river, but it is a deceptively large premises adjopining a camp site. We went as the place had been recommended by a friend who had had a good experience, sadly our visit did not mimic his. The food was fairly bland , even though there was plently of it. In the case of my salad it was mainly green in colour with little else. There was live music in a different part of the building but this did not intrude in the area we were seated as the place was so big

My wife and i arrived here around 3 pm,hoping that we would be able to still get some lunch, and we were told that it was no problem,my wife plumped for the daily special (Crab and Prawn salad), I had the cod and chips,my wife had a whole small crab (dressed) in the shell and a pile of prawns, and a really nice fresh salad, she also ordered new pots, but never managed to eat them all,as she had more than enough food, my fish and chips were cooked fresh and were really good, everything was served with a smile, and without a doubt, we will return.

We go there, monthly, for lunch and it never disappoints. The food is delicious. The dilemma is choosing what to have. We have always received a warm welcome and the service is always delivered with a smile. It is in a beautiful setting with the river Stour running by the side of it. Looking forward to our next visit.

How can a baked potato be cooked so badly? It was not properly cooked half raw, slightly crunchy. Al dente potato's are realy not my thing. It was worse than that, it looked like it might have been partly cooked, then frozen & reheated.

Fabulous tasty food and so much on each plate - even more than we could eat. The menu is simple, and not much choice for vegetarians like me, but what you get is excellent and good value. The service was prompt and the staff very friendly. The pub is definitely dog friendly inside (bar areas) and out in the lovely garden. Would highly recommend.

What an absolute gem this place is!! Our first visit, we didn’t know what to expect. It’s in a relaxed setting by the river, with beautifully manicured gardens. The pub/restaurant is much larger than it first appears. There is an extensive range of beers, all served by very friendly staff. But the true diamond here is the food! We had a mixed ploughman’s and lambs liver and bacon. The ploughman’s was enormous, with everything that you can think of in it, all served on a large/full size dinner plate. There was so much, that the pate, cheese and ham sat proudly on top, all excellent quality. Then the lambs liver, it was amazing!! The menu says served with mash and veg - on ordering the question came, what potatoes - mash, chips, roast, new? Veg, carrot, broccoli, cauliflower! There was masses of lovely liver, potatoes and veg were all freshly prepared and cooked. All of this, with a large wine and a coke, with change from £30. If you enjoy good quality food, served in large operations at a reasonable price, this is the place for you! This was our first visit, but certainly will not be our last! I can’t wait to explore their menu further.

Not the usual friendly atmosphere when greeted. Our third visit over a year whilst on holiday. We were told no more food after 7:30pm even though it says it’s open until 11:00pm. We ordered steak and ale pie. With minutes later the kitchen assistant came out to us and said they had no more pie left, I’m sure this was because it takes too long to cook. So in the end ordered a half pound gourmet burger. Which came out very quickly to my surprise. It was awful. Overcooked burger as though it was pre cooked and warmed through again served in a dry bun and served with under cooked chips. Asked to order a desert very quickly with our main meal. It’s such a shame. Supposed to be a lovely relaxing evening out to a mc Donald’s fast track service of awful food and service. I have thirty five years of catering experience and had certainly put me off going back.

We came as a family of 7 on Thursday around 6pm. We were seated in the restaurant, we were the only ones in there. We went to the bar to order our drinks, because no came to us. We then went to order our food at the bar again because no one came to get our order. Staff were chatting, one was on her phone. Our food was delicious, fresh, tasty, good portions, compliments to the chef who was working that night. We often pop in for lunch and staff usually come to you for your order ? We never left a tip, they did nothing for that apart from bringing the food to the table. No checks to see if we were ok, no offer of menu for sweets, ignored really. 10/10 for food. Zero for staff, non attentive, too busy chatting.

First time here, I went for the salmon and prawn salad. I though this was going to be quite small, let me tell you it was not. The plate was full of salad and fish it also included new potatoes. The others went for lasagne, chips and peas and steak and ale pie, roasts and veg ( their was a lot of veg) they all said it was excellent. Compliments to the chef. All of the bar staff welcomed us with a smile. One of the bar staff ( Lisa I think I recall another staff member calling her) came across quite rude, but I let it go as it could of been a bad day. Our young waitress (summer) was brilliant, she delivered our food with such a friendly smile and warned us the plates were hot. She came back 5 minutes later too check the food was okay. What a lovely young lady. We sat in the restaurant which was all laid up nicely. We will definitely be retuning to the dog and duck.

Wasn’t sure what to expect, it was a last minute booking on Father’s Day and they had a vacancy for five and a dog! Tables outside with a gazebo and a singer setting up, but we’d elected an inside table as there was a chance of rain. Directed to our table which had a reserved sign. Table layout was spacious, distance between tables was good - most venues seem to cram the tables in to maximise profit. Roast diners of lamb, beef or turkey with roast pots and seasonal veg, there were about 10-12 other main courses covering pies, fish, salad and lasagna etch plus a selection of children’s meals. You go to the bar to order your food and drinks. I opted for the steak and ale pie, chips and peas, it said there was optional seasonal veg but they sent that out anyway. Daughter had half roast chicken and others the roast Turkey. The pie was a large portion, pastry thin and the meat plentiful and full of flavour, best I’ve had in ages, the chips large and crispy and the peas were …..peas. All in all a great plate of food. Equally the other meals were generous potions, Turkey and roast potatoes almost filled the plate. The veg was well cooked, not over done and consisted of carrots, cauliflower and cabbage. More than we needed. All meals arrived together and hot, waitresses (2) were good, offered condiments and returned 10 mins later to check everything was ok. Plates cleared but not rushed to leave, declined desserts as we were too full. The bill came to £61.00 for five meals (not including drinks) when I enquired about the service charge, the owner told me it’s not included and declined to take it and politely asked me to pay our waitress direct. Must be a good place to work to have such an honest boss. Would we go back, definitely, would we recommend it, yes but don’t all book at once or we may find it harder to get a table!

Four of us stopped by on a walk and ordered pints of Doom Bar, which tasted off and were really cloudy. They agreed to change them but the next four were even worse with lumps of sediment floating in them. We took them back again, waited but no fresh beers were brought out. They would only refund two of the four beers. Very disappointing. Worst pub I’ve been to in Kent.

Our retirement group arranged an outing to the venue for lunch and entertainment. The pub is located close to the River Stour in delightful countryside. They offer a coach party menu with a good choice of options and we were not disappointed with the size of the portions or the quality of the food. The meat pie was especially popular served with chips and peas or fresh vegetables. They had also arranged an entertainer for us and Nick Bosworth played a selection of great music as we ate and livened it up for us to dance as we finished our meal. There were 58 of us and the friendly staff looked after us very well. Whether you are a group of friends, a couple or a coach party you can be sure of a friendly welcome and good food

Start with the positives - the kids ate all their dinner from the kids menu which wasn’t present. How much they truly enjoyed it, being kids, I’m not entirely sure. That’s it.We were confronted by a lady behind the bar who although initially appeared friendly, took offence to nearly all our requests once we had sat down for dinner. The problem we had was that the menu choices never told you what they included. However I felt it was clear once we had ordered, that I with my lasagne wouldn’t need chips and just peas, and that my partners chicken and leek pie would arrive also with peas. It just felt like whatever we did ask was too much. But alas we were hungry! And full of promise when it turned up at the table. As I say the kids scoffed theirs, however my lasagne turned up small and with 3/4 plate of chips. Thought it was clear at ordering. My partner and still totally bewilderingly to me doesn’t enjoy gravy. Her chicken and leek pie turned up drowned in gravy. The menu never stipulated anything Coming the lasagne or gravy with the pie. I did, and I’m one too do so, send the food back. Though even that was difficult. Again just feeling a nuisance which was surprising seeing as were only one of two families currently eating there. Waitress constantly telling me ‘that’s just how it comes’. In the end when I got to the till I was told that because they had to remove the chips and add more lasagne (which by the way is exactly what I asked for) that she charged me for the equivalent of a soup!!!! For nothinf else but an embarrassment I paid and left. it was not at all an enjoyable meal, and whilst the kids ate theirs we left pretty hungry and fed up. The site remains nice with the river, but I can’t see myself returning to eat again. A shame as I have visited often as with my family growing up. Spend your money somewhere else

We visited the Dog and Duck on Friday evening for a meal with friends, and had a very enjoyable and safe meal. All the rules were adhered to and social distancing was very good. The food was excellent so a good night was had by all. However, because we had a nice time on Friday, we returned with a friend on Wednesday lunch time, what a difference, although the food was still very good and there service friendly, I am afraid the social distancing and safety were not there. People just wandered around as they wanted, there were arrows on the floor but nobody bothered to adhere to them, we were sat at our table and people were walking far to close to us.In all it was quite an uncomfortable meal.I mention this for the owners to know that if like us you have been shielding because of pre existing conditions it takes a lot to venture out after all this time and not to feel safe is a big thing to us.I would have thought it would be to the owners as well, because one case could cause all sorts of problems. Will try another visit in the evening soon but will certainly not be returning on a lunchtime for a while.I hope this is treated as it is meant ''usefully''.

Lovely location by the river. Nice garden to sit outside. However, this is as good as it gets.... Decor inside is extremely basic and cheap looking. Very tacky. Radio playing as “background music” was quite loud which was annoying as every so often there are adverts blaring out. Why not put a CD on to avoid the adverts??! Service is EXTREMELY SLOW even though it wasn’t that busy! There were several empty tables outside and only 3 tables taken up inside - ie loads of free tables and not busy! We ordered a starter platter to share and a main each. An hour later and no food had arrived. No apology given. Everyone else around us was getting their food. Then eventually the mains arrived. No starter had arrived!! The girl serving was clueless about the starter we had ordered. Rather than insist on receiving the starter that we had ordered we accepted the mains as we were starving and we didn’t want to have to wait any longer for food. Later on the girl came back to tell us she had taken the starter off our bill. We were going to order desserts but based on the poor service and the mix up with the order we decided not to bother. When we came to pay the bill the starter hadn’t been taken off the bill! Basically a very poor experience all round and what a shame as it is in a lovely setting.

A restaurant that puts safety and service ahead of everything and follows through five five start food. Organised areas that clearly state where to wait and staff that greet you with a smile. Organising a restaurant of this size must be difficult during these times but they made it feel very relaxing and welcoming . The food was fresh and made to order and it’s a very hearty size so bring an empty stomach . We will definitely be visiting again and love this place. Recommending the ploughman’s and the chicken nuggets (made with Fresh chicken breast so no guilt for feeding fast food to the family)for the kids. Thank you Dog and Duck.

We came to the pub on Monday and it was empty when we arrived. We were served quickly and the food was lovely. Once we had finished we waited well over an hour and eventually had to get someone’s attention for the desert menu. The lady then brought over the desert menu and we decided to have the bill which again took a long time to pay. It seemed like the bar and waiting staff were more interested in the locals that had arrived and were standing around the bar even though there were signs saying this wasn’t allowed. Unfortunately I don’t think we would return which is a shame as the food was lovely.

Went there for a drink for the first time today. Stood at the bar where it said ‘stand here to order’. The barman saw me but choose to ignore me and serve 2 other customers who were after me - round the corner. I left and went to the excellent Bell Inn at St Nicholas who know how to treat customers Pubs should be falling over themselves to serve people. Wouldn’t touch it with the proverbial barge pole.

We booked for Christmas dinner, the turkey dinners were lovely as was the lamb and the sea bass. Sadly my daughter had the nut roast and was presented with two brick shapes, which were as dry as a bone and very hard. Unfortunately, there was no gravy on the table, the gravy already being put on the turkey dinners and no extra offered. My husband would have liked some gravy with his lamb and my daughter would have even taken some to make her nut roast edible. I did mention the disappointment with the nut roast to two waitresses but no solution was offered. Secondly, we couldn't hear the entertainment, only the other area clapping at the end of each song, so that was a disappointment too, as we had been looking forward to this. The staff worked hard but after paying £60, my daughter who works as a chef in a London hotel was really upset that the main course was so uneatable.

Popped in for an evening meal after many months of not eating here. It was steak night and hubby chose steak meal, which was both beautifully presented and cooked to perfection. I opted for an old favourite of mine steak and kidney pudding with new potatoes, veg and gravy, again, cooked to perfection and well presented. I have to say it was the best meal we have eaten there since the days when the Landlord used to cook the meals. Could not fault the meals in any way, meat was top quality with no fat or gristle. Well done to the Chef and the D and D!

Large party for a special birthday booked weeks in advance. Only 2 waiting staff so food was cold for the last people, served. No water or glasses or condiments on the table and staff had to be reminded about preordered wine. No gravy for the vegan - at our request a basic veg stock cube provided. Average overcooked food. Such a shame for our special family event very disappointing. Its a nice pub on a lovely setting but I would not eat here again.

We were looking for somewhere to eat and found this nice pub just off the main road.We were greeted with a friendly smile and menu with our choice of seats.Once we had ordered the food came quickly. The portions were extremely generous. The Steak and Ale pie was delicious! The meat was really tender and the pastry was really tasty. It can with a mountain or mash potato or chips and a large bowl of seasonal veg.It was reasonably priced and we would definitely go there again if in the area.Thank you

I had the lamb rump which was tough as old boots not given a steak knife had too ask for 1 even then couldn’t really eat the meat it was such poor quality and fatty. The gravy watery the bubble and squeak burnt and cold carrots and “buttered “ cabbage cold boiled cabbage avoid so so disappointing the whole meal was and definitely overpriced

A fabulous overnight stop in our campervan. We had a very warm welcome from Dylan who looked after us very well. The bar & restaurant was very busy however Dylan’s professionalism as a server made his job appear easy! Our food was served in a timely manner, piping hot and so delicious! The pastry on the vegetable tart was so tasty with added herbs. The gammon steak burger with an egg was very moreish. Now to the sticky toffee pudding with piping hot custard, a decent size portion, thank goodness we shared! Believe me when I say this is a lovely pub with scrumptious food, & fabulous service from Dylan
