My wife and I used to pop into this pub quite often before we had children....we always enjoyed this lovely historic pub and its warm atmosphere. After taking our children to the afternoon church service at Paddlesworth on Christmas Eve we thought we would have a drink in the pub. We went in and there were a few people drinking at the bar. We stood there waiting to be served and eventually the landlord appeared and told us he was closed. He then told us that the people drinking hadn't left despite him telling them that he was now closed. I asked him if we could perhaps just have one quick drink and he started to get a bit agitated and said "look I don't want to swear in front of the kids but I'm getting P'd off here". We wished him a merry Christmas and left. Such a shame as this was once a fantastic pub that always would have been welcoming, and doing a thriving trade on Christmas Eve.

We recently had reason to visit The Cat. We were travelling frim Scotland and Birmingham especially for our visit. My grandparents were licencees of the pub many years ago and we wanted to visit on what would have been my father's 100th birthday. As this was on a Monday the pub would not normally be open. The lovely Katie and her boss agreed to open especially for us so that we were able to go inside and remember my dad and show my grandchildren a little of their our family history. We can not thank them enough for their hospitality especially Katie who came in on her day off. To say she went over and above great customer service does not do justice to her. Thank you Thank you Thank you. You really made our visit so special.

A traditional pub serving tradition food.... perfect. I am embarrassed to say I live near to this lovely pub but this is the first visit. Shame on me. As soon as we entered we were welcomed by a pleasant gentleman who took our order. Whilst ordering we were staring at all the delicious food people were eating. So much to choose from. The pub is full of World War 2 memorabilia. Aircraft hanging from the ceiling.. Spitfire looked amazing. Looking at all this memorabilia it just brought back great memories when we would me sit with pa watching the Battle of britian, Where Eagles Dare, A Bridge too far.... 😊 Food arrived from a friendly lady. Food was delicious and very generous portion. Thoroughly enjoyed coming here and I will be back. If you want a traditional pub, with traditional food this will be ideal. A big thank you to the staff for making us feel so welcomed. Highly recommend a visit.

After being disappointed going to Lyminge and going to the Coach and Horses only to find one had to wait an hour for food we headed off to The Cat and Custard Pot 3 miles away. We both had Ploughman's for lunch: my wife the ham and I had the cheese. Both were substantial but very ordinary food (cheap white bread). All the condiments were in plastic sachets. I asked if they did filter coffee - No! It was cheap in that 2 mineral waters and the ploughmans came to £16. We would not visit again but there was a large amount of WWII RAF memorabilia which was interesting to see.

Date of visit - Monday 4 November 2019 Friends of The Mole Hash House Harriers set a trail from the Cat and Custard Pot. 11 people ordered their food as they arrived at the pub. The menu has recently been revised and there is a lot of choice. The pub kitchen worked hard to make sure the food was ready on our return from the Hash at 9pm. My husband ordered the lamb shank, I had the fish and chips - both were excellent, large portions, fresh vegetables beautifully cooked and very nicely presented - both meals cost £19.90 so very good value. As a large group we pushed the tables together so we could all sit together. A good range of real ale. Dog friendly, large car park. Lots of history associated with this pub and well placed for access to some lovely walking around Paddlesworth and Hawkinge. Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.

My running club are here last night. We had a run in the beautiful country side then all came into the pub for a meal. Most had chicken curry with two of us having the veggie option of veg chilli and nacho’s. My chilli was amazing and everyone got their meal pretty quickly. I didn’t try the curry but I was told it was nice. Portions were generous and the group rate we paid was very reasonable (£7 per head). We were obviously thirsty after our run so we all purchased drinks. Hopefully the pub had a profitable evening from our group outing. I love this pub, it’s so nostalgic. Staff are friendly, will definitely eat here more often.

I feel somewhat aggrieved to give this a one star, but unfortunately I couldn't give a lower rating....I like to be fair; and pick out positives as they arise. Ample Parking.Having rung ahead and booked a table, I felt assured of a positive visit, as we entered the place was packed, not because of the amount of people, more the scale of place itself... having waited at the bar 5 minutes and seeing the bar staff manage to make one drink in that time and hearing the people to our immediate right complaining they had been waiting 30 minutes for service - we enquired as to the fate of our table.A wry smile, from the bar man that said - you'll be lucky. It's not going to get any better. We left hungry and disappointed. Not the cats that got the custard, the pot appeared empty.

We stopped here genuinely because of the name, it is pretty awesome. But that really was as far as it went. It was a Sunday. It wasn't late in the day and somewhere boasting of great home-cooked food could at least have delivered that. But are meals were quite obviously ready made and (mine particularly) was a microwave job. There was no attempt at presentation and very sub standard food that clearly came from a box. The place is fun and full to bursting with model planes and pictures, it was worth the stop for the history side of things. But pretty sure we won't be going back anytime soon.

Lots of WW2 Memorabilia due to the history of the pub as an R&R spot for nearby airmen and support staff at Hawkinge WW2 Airdrome. Food is old-fashioned pub fare and when I arrived at 1:35 I was politely but unflinchingly told I was too late. Sandwiches? Sorry. Crisps had to do. However, I really enjoyed my pint of Sussex Best Bitter (from Horsham) and I loved the surroundings. Mostly aged locals here or veterons reminiscing. The country setting is really beautiful. Lovely church across the road which will have hosted many a pilot's funeral. One day I might get here in time to sample the food, but until then my rating relates to the beer and the surroundings.

The airfield in Hawkinge is one of the most famous Battle of Britain airfields. During those weeks in 1940 pilots fought bitterly to maintain control over the British airspace and thus stopping the German invasion. After another day of ferocious air battle, pilots would use the "Aerodrome Road" to travel the mile that brought the to "The Cat & Custard Pot". Now you can do the same. Have a good ale and some pub food and have a look at photos and other artifacts from those days while sitting in the same spots as did the heroes of those days.

We were welcomed warmly by Jeane, owner since the mid 70s, her son John served our drinks & took our food order, I had BBQ spare ribs, chips, onion rings, & coleslaw and my my wife had scampi, chips, & salad, all washed down with a couple of pints of larger for me & two vodka & tonics for my wife. A very good quality meal & value for money at £31.80, enjoyed in a great old British pub atmosphere

AS recommended by The BATTLE OF BRITAIN Memorial Trust and Kent Battle of Britain museum. Untouched pub that really does take you back to the 40's era...proper pub food that was excellent and fairly priced ....down to earth and a true English pub that just lacks a few pilots and smokey atmosphere....wish it was my local.....Thank you from www.rafforties.co.uk

This real gem of a country pub is well hidden but its worth finding.Once inside the walls are covered with history of the local area (ww2 battle Britain). We have been a few times before but didn't think to review. Yes its a bit like stepping back in time but the staff are always friendly. The food is cooked fresh to order and for such a small venue their is a good choice with something for everybody. If its sunny you can sit outside and just opposite is a tiny church well worth a little visit. Pay this place a visit its worth the trip to the countryside even if you do get lost a few times it really is a real gem. In the winter it has the open fire burning to add to the character and like i said in the summer sit outide soak up the country air and have the chilli nachos(my fav)

We visited the pub with our car club and were made most welcome. Staff were friendly and the food was good. The bar has lots of photographs and items from it's days as a "Battle of Britain" pub being a short distance from the old fighter airfield at Hawkinge, which is now a museum..We had lunch after a visit to the Battle of Britain museum and it rounded off the day. Well worth a visit if you are in the area. We will be going back when we are next in the area to revisit both the museum and the pub.

ive lived in the area 13 years and only heard about this pub, my wife has been years ago, so we decided to go for a meal. it was busy so we had to wait, but when the meal came we were not disappointed, i had the gammon steak and my wife the ham, served with 2 eggs peas and plenty of chips and a salad. mine was £8.50 and my wife £7.50. a good choice of menu for all tastes. and drinks at a good price. staff are friendly and quick to clear up the tables. i liked the planes hanging from the walls and the RAF photos scattered about. toilets are clean as well and the pub has plenty of car parking spaces. i will be back and i recommend it to anyone. give it a go.

Very cute little place to stop off at as you walk through the country. This is only a 20 minute walk from us and in the 2 years we've lived here, for some reason we had never visited. They do traditional pub grub and a good variety too!

We were giving the advice to eat at this nicely decorated pub (RAF stuff). The curry was OK. But the cauliflower/brocolli cheese dish was to greasy for my liking. As were the chips. The dessrts were mediocre. Would not eat there again.

I called in for lunch with my son and some friends. I had been there once before, probably more than 20 years ago, and it probably looked just the same. It's a wonderful traditional English pub, with a decent pint, a great ambience and some interesting memorabilia on display - a cross between a pub and a museum! Fabulous. But the food was so disappointing. The soup was a disaster and almost inedible, the macaroni and cheese wasn't much better and the rest of our order was decidedly average - although I would put in a good word for the chips! The prices were very reasonable but, to be honest, I would have rather paid a bit more and enjoyed better food. Other reviews have commented on the 'good food' - so maybe the 'chef' was having an off day!The staff were friendly and we enjoyed our visit, but I'm afraid it would be the pub and its atmosphere rather than the food on offer that would tempt me back.

This is a small neighborhood pub and while the food (fish and chips) was good, the wait was long. I guess you get in line in the kitchen behind the people already there (we arrived 15 minutes after it opened). Still, good atmosphere and friendly staff.

Worth the narrow country lanes to eat here. Good pub food and interesting RAF memorabilia. Clean and welcoming.

This pub is a survivor in an age when there are very few pubs like this left. Proper beer, proper food, realistic prices, great feel, great welcome, great staff, great location and no annoying music in the background to distract from the enjoyment. It's quirky in a lovely way due to the landlady's quirky sense of humour. She has been piloting this pub for years and years and that's why it's a one-off. If you want road house go to the Mayfly in Hawkinge. If you want to experience a true traditional English pub look no further than the Cat and Custard Pot.

waited 15 minutes to be served waited a further 15 minutes for our lunch. Drinks were warm. My friend ordered breakfast which was cold and my jacket potato was not thoroughly cooked. We will not be going again.

I stopped here for a drink and a snack and had the most wonderful lunchtime. Atmosphere was cosy, warm and welcoming. Staff were just so lovely to me and all the other customers. Could not have been more helpful and kind. Honestly it was the loveliest experience and really made my visit to this fabulous town even more special. And the chips were amazing too! A huge thanks to everyone for looking after me.
