Absolutely excellent stay we had with our dog Honey for two nights. The accommodation was spotless and comfortable and the breakfast was out of this world along with the staff who were superb I’d highly recommend this pub also for its food which was consistently ten out of ten 👍

I booked The Bull for a family reunion, 19 adults and 3 small children, and Jodi and her team made the whole experience go effortlessly. We had absolutely no issues, no stress, and was given the whole upstairs to ourselves allowing us to mingle and socialise without worrying about annoying other clientele. Staff were helpful, efficient, and really pleasant. The food came out hot and cooked perfectly, literally everyone enjoyed- including our picky younger eaters who finished it all! Would not hesitate at all to recommend or come back again.

We booked a table at The Bladebone and on arrival it was closed for refurb work. On booking no one bothered to tell us all meals are being served at the sister restaurant The Bull. Luckily I called The Bull to ask what was going on as our booking had been taken the week before and was told to drive over and we should have been informed. On arrival we were given a table in the gazebo that’s attached to the pub. It was so cold in there even with heaters so we asked to be moved. We were then seated in the bar area with the workmen who had stopped off for a drink. Not the meal out we were hoping for. As the bar area is away from the restaurant area we were forgotten about. The food when it came was ok but the service was so poor. It made for an inexpensive night as we only had 1 drink on arrival, the waitress didn’t come to offer any refills so we paid the bill and left. Such a shame as we are supporters of The Bladebone and The Bull but might take a break for a while until they get their act together.

The Bull is a lovely pub with a nice garden and decorated in rustic chic style in muted tones (much like it's sister pub The Bladebone). I have been searching for a decent Sunday roast with crispy potato's and was willing to drive 30 mins to try the roast here. The meal had positives and negatives. The beef was pink and tender, the chicken succulent, the cauliflower cheese creamy and with sufficient bite. The potato's were crispy but unfortunately far too salty. The vegetables all cooked nicely but with no seasoning or butter or anything else to elevate them at all. The yorkshire puddings were burnt and soft. The gravy was just OK. For dessert we tried profiteroles and the sticky toffee pudding. Both were good, especially the stp which was rich and deep in flavour. The profiteroles needed a puddle of sauce and not the drizzle that they come with but the honeycomb was delicious, very caramelised and surprisingly warm . Service was polite and friendly but nobody asked if we were happy with our meals at any stage. There didn't seem to be any one person assigned to our table and we saw 4 different people for ordering and paying the bill. If I was scoring out of 10 I would give the meal 7 minus 1/2 a point for intermittent service so 6.5 in total.

Bit of trek down twisty narrow roads to find this hidden gem but the setting of the pub is beautiful. The place was buzzing (it was Saturday night) - no wonder the earliest they could book us in for dinner was 8.15pm - and we were outside under the awning on a pleasant summer evening. Service was understandably somewhat slow, not helped by our table being adrift at the back of the hubbub, and it took 20 minutes to get a drinks order in. We all had the scones and Brie for starter which was absolutely delicious, but my chicken schnitzel main was a little disappointing - very dry and the hot meat plonked on top of cold salad leaves made both the breadcrumb base and the greenery equally soggy. As a footnote I’m sorry but I really don’t like the presumptuous service charge added to the bill.

First visit to the Bull in five years or so. Found the interior now a bit strange with bright lights around the bar and Xmas decorations on the beams. I am the first to admit that pubs have changed but it was a weird mixture of a country and a town pub. The menu had a good choice but Ploughman is no more. The scampi and chips meal was very good but it was served up with multiple pots all of which had to be emptied onto the plate the make a meal. Service was attentive and welcoming.

From Padworth Recycling (fun Friday!) we decided to eat at the Bladebone or sister pub the Bull. As usual couldn't park at the Bladebone but we lucked in with The Bull. Not only could we park with ease but the sun was out and we sat at the front of the pub in this beautiful, delicate village. I first ate there 50 years ago and whilst some things have changed the character of the pub remains. We had 2 from the 'Whilst you wait', Whitebait and Sausages. Both delicious. My son chose the slow cooked pork belly and I had one from the special menu, Thai cod with rice and sauce. It was wonderful as was the pork. We always share and I was hard pressed to give him half my cod whilst I said to only give me a little bit of his pork! He thought both dishes were perfect. Service was excellent. Wine was excellent.

Ate here with friends last night. It’s many years since I last visited The Bull, but it had been recommended to us and we thought we’d give it a try. Very impressed with everything about the place; our cosy corner table table, service and food were all excellent. We shared a mix of the ‘Whilst you wait’ tapas-style dishes for starters, followed by Pork Belly, 2 Feathered Steaks and the char-grilled chicken carbonara. Everything was delicious, including the perfectly cooked, melt in the mouth, medium-rare steaks and the quality of the food shone through. I don’t normally ‘do’ puddings, but did here - simply because it had all been so good and I didn’t want to miss out! The Bull is definitely one of the best local pubs we have dined at and we will definitely be returning. Will probably try a Sunday roast next time, although also tempted by the look of their breakfasts! Excellent pub restaurant and a definite ten out of ten!

Decididamente decepcionante.

Went to The Bull recently with family and had one of the best Sunday roasts I have had at a pub. Normally I think you can cook a better roast at home than at a pub but the Sunday roast at The Bull is excellent. Beef was excellent quality and served pink, the pork was also very tasty. Very good quality sides, especially cauliflower cheese. Puddings were also excellent, I had rhubarb and apple crumble which was delicious. Service was very quick and efficient, especially given how busy the pub was. Thank you!

We’ve been to the Bladebone and enjoyed it (despite the notoriously poor service) so thought we’d try The Bull. The waitress took ages to bring us a menu and take a drinks order, then only brought a drink for my wife! We ordered the scallops but they must have been running out as we were served 3 tiny scallops that had been cut in half! It did taste good but for £9 each it’s not exactly good value. For main course I ordered a burger and the waitress asked me if I’d like cheddar, applewood or Stilton with it, implying that it came with cheese but neglecting to mention that all these “options” were a £1 each. Had I chosen two options it would have made a very average, tasteless burger £18.50 which is ridiculously expensive. I understand they’re just trying to make as much money as they can, but they really don’t need to take the proverbial..... What a waste of a babysitter.

Booked last minute for a Saturday night early dinner. The food was tasty and well cooked, the beef rib mac and cheese was unusual and just hit the spot. We did however think that it was a little pricey for what we had, we would prefer to pay a fraction more and eat at their other establishment, The Bladebone, which we feel is better value for the food we enjoy. Having been poorly for three weeks I only wanted a very small amount of alcohol so asked for a 125ml glass of wine. Twice the waitress tried to sell me a medium glass but I reiterated that I only wanted a small one. I actually didn’t drink all of it but enjoyed what I had. When the bill came they had charged us for a medium glass which my husband pointed out, their response was that they don’t sell a small glass so the till couldn’t charge me for it! We pointed out that it is a legal requirement to sell a 125ml glass, in fact the law says they should offer it but we know of nowhere that does this now. They appeared to be unaware of the law and had to override the till and put my drink on as a sundry item. I find it frustrating that pubs and restaurants are trying to remove the smaller glass option by stealth as was the case here by not even having it on their till. At a time when we are all being told to be drink aware... My three star review reflects our feelings on value for money and the illegality of not offering a smaller glass of wine, however, to be fair the food was tasty and the staff pleasant.

Family lunch for 4 on Xmas Eve. Despite being only the 2nd table in the restaurant at just prior to 1pm, the first course took a long time to arrive. Then despite the menu choice of Dingley Scotch egg being asked about & then ordered without piccalilli , it arrived with an unwanted sauce, which is not detailed on the menu. This could not be eaten , and we were informed that a replacement would take 8 mins and delay our main courses. So some bread & butter chosen as an alternative, which took six minutes to arrive! Another starter of bubble & squeak with poached egg, had a cold egg, but did not send back to avoid further aggravation.

Over-hyped food which revealed itself, at best, as disappointing and served up on “vintage” 1970s platters complete with all the unnecessary baskets, buckets and other tweeness including jumble sale cutlery, waiting staff lost without front-of-house management and direction, slow service, rubbish table in effectively a corridor, affected quasi-artisan décor… needs stripping back with a smaller and better executed menu, sharper service and lose the silly frills including that ghastly loo seat in the ladies.

Food was very good (pricey for what it is) and portion sizes were just right. A very extensive menu but mainly fish with only 3 meat choices (one of which had sold out). I always think it's a slight let down when there isn't a varied selection but weighted towards one type of food source. I eat fish but didn't fancy it on this particular night. The others in my party did opt for the fish and it looked very nice and they all thoroughly enjoyed their meals. 4 stars on this occasion.

We have been going to the Bull for a while, since it re-opened, mostly for evening meals...It is a lovely pub, in idyllic setting, and serves a very good interesting menu...not too gut stuffing, excellent choice, friendly atmosphere. so it's a lovely place to go for supper..about mid price for around here. But the latest way we are regularly using The Bull, and highly recommend people trying, is go along at lunchtime and have the excellent sandwiches! Absolutely delicious and we think GREAT value! These are served on hunks of delicious, soft fresh bread, and with some seriously good chunky fries (which I tend to give most of to my other half!) plus salad...things like crayfish, and smoked chicken bacon and avocado, smoked salmon and cream cheese...just yummy, and EXCELLENT VALUE at 6 or 7 pounds each...so on Sunday lunchtime, we walked there, had lunch and a drink each for about £15 between us! Unlikely you'd be disappointed with the food here either going a la carte, or lunch, or bar nibbles, but these sandwich meals are really particularly good value and yum...perfect for a wander down to the pub and have a bite at lunchtime!

Having moored our boat at Sonning 5 of us went to The Bull for lunch. The menu was excellent and although we had only planned on having a light lunch we were all tempted to eat more than we really needed to. Our food was so delicious that we seriously discussed staying moored where we were for the rest of the day so that we could go back to the Bull for our evening meal. Unfortunately due to time constraints we couldn't do this but I would love to return one day for another meal.

Having been regular diners at The Bull over eleven years I think food standards are dropping. Having had mussels last night over a third were inedible as they were unopened. The bread was not nice fresh arisan bread but two small pieces of under cooked long life baguette, or that's what I thought. I did tell the waiter that the food was disappointing, the chefs says sorry was my reply. If he had said have a free cup of tea I might be less disappointed. But having tried their morning coffee one quiet weekday and waited half an hour for it, I think they need to pull their socks up.

Visited recently for the first time and was impressed, no long queues after placing your order like in Costa etc, all staff are young and very helpful & pleasant. This is how a cafe should be run, Yesterday visited the Reading Cafe, same level of service received, we had to amend our order after sitting down, it was no problem for them at all and we were made to feel again nothing is too much trouble. Got home and looked into the Company, they focus on employing the right people & training them. Well done for doing this, your doing the right thing from the top down to the shop floor, If there’s a Boswells near me wherever I am that’s where I will be spending my money. 🙏😁

Excellent service from a very enthusiastic young man. Unfortunately several dishes were not up to the usual standard. The pork rib eye and beef feather were very good and presented well. The tandoori prawns on Naan bread were a poor substitute for the old garlic prawns and more reminiscent of a TV dinner. The chicken schnitzel presentation was poor. It came without the coronation mayonnaise and there could be more imagination with the salad which was just little gem cut up. Flavour, however, was good. The hot drink with small pudding was a winner as usual and delicious.

Have been a few times and it’s been nice but today it seems the owner was around for the first time that I’ve seen him. His attitude was something I can’t explain, rude to say the least! Comes across very intimidating and only seems to favour his regulars… after speaking to other regulars they all said he’s not been around for a while and that he likes to push his weight around when he’s on site. Definitely will not be going again. Shame really….. typical Irish

After complaint ( wine arrived without top and tasted like it had been mixed & steak was fatty) I received the following by email - nothing during dinner though.“ I am equally disappointed with your experience here at The Hare & Hounds as you are. It is simply not what you should expect from us.Given you took time out of your day to provide feedback, it gives me hope there is a chance to win you back and make this right. Greg, it’s important to me that you know that hospitality and making my guests happy is what keeps me going, and I do not take negative feedback lightly. Please allow me some time to regroup with my team and get back to you”Never heard anything back and when I tried to reply to email it was a ‘no-reply’ email address. For a £135 bill ( for 2 people, excluding the service charge) I expected a lot better !
