What a beautiful old pub . Felt so comfortable and friendly. Food was really good and freshly prepared and hot. This is going to be a regular favourite for the family . The staff were great too and the really lovely young lady behind the bar made you feel at home straight away.

Our party of three had a lovely meal at The Bolton Arms. The service was excellent and the staff were great. The fish and chips I had was the best I've eaten for a long time; lovely crispy batter, a large piece of haddock & exceptionally good chips. My husband really enjoyed his chicken curry and our meanwhile our friend had a hamburger (which was the size of the O2) and a huge plate of skinny fries! Definitely highly recommended.

It’s great to see the Bolton back up and running after such a long closure. The food is excellent and John’s fish and chips is the best in the village. The garden is as always a great place to spend a sunny afternoon and today was even better with the new Pimms summer pudding. There are still some downsides though, this is a cold pub in the winter with quite inadequate heating. Good choice of beers and Andy has come up with a great wine list. Service is excellent helped by the delightful Isla.

Hadn’t visited this pub since it’s closing and being taken over by new people and we are so glad we did. Went on a Sunday lunchtime and had the warmest welcome ever. It was really busy which I was surprised about as it never used to be so glad I’d booked a table for 5 of us. I think it was Ali the new manager who was so friendly and couldn’t have been a better host, in fact all the staff that served us were friendly, chatty and great. We had roasts, burgers, ham egg and chips (which they made especially even though it wasn’t on the Sunday menu) followed by a couple of puddings, good home made pub food at a reasonable price, all our meals were hot and excellent. We will most definitely be returning in the hopefully near future☺️.

The food was good, nice and hot and tasty my steak was cooked perfectly and my mum said the turkey was very moist. I also have sticky toffee pudding which was very tasty. I think there could be a few improvements, I felt like the atmosphere was a bit cold (the pub was cold and almost empty) and menu needs more clarity. One of the roasts available wasn't on the menu which was a bit strange, so we had to ask the price of it. It wasn't entirely clear that the whole menu was available on Sunday until we asked (the table next to us asked the same questions). I suggest this is made clearer to have the selection of meats taken off the menu and replaced by "roasts of the day". I asked for green beans but the girl said she wasn't sure if they had any, she didn't come back and update me but my meal came with a pile of broccoli instead, which I didn't mind but would have been good to know in case I didn't like broccoli. I have a food intolerance so was told I couldn't have sauce with my steak, it would have been nice to have been offered a different sauce. Overall, very good food but attention to detail lacking a little.

We visited on Mother’s Day with our whole family.. we received a very warm welcome with a surprise glass of Prosecco for all the mums which was just lovely! It was great to walk into the revamped Bolton after almost 18 months of closure. Four of us had 3 different starters, 4 mains, 2 puds. All were excellent and served efficiently and with a smile. All the tables around us seemed equally happy. There has been a lot of work gone into getting the business started and it shows. I think we might dine out regularly now! Excellent wine too.

Well where to start! We made our way to this pub as recommended by many in the area as it’s been re opened recently, very cold, uninviting and made to feel very unwelcome by those behind the bar! Such a lovely building but it seemed very clear that unless you were a local or friends with them you weren’t wanted in there. Slow service and zero atmosphere unfortunately. Such a shame

Visited this pub for dinner on a warm spring evening. The building is is quite quirky and interesting there is what appears to be a framed pair of yellow underpants on one wall (I did intend to investigate further on my way out, but I forgot so the underpants remain a mystery). The staff seemed somewhat disinterested and were complaining of staff shortages. I ordered a chicken & parma ham dish with roast vegetables and a beer. The beer was good, but when the chef appeared at the bar I did wonder who was doing the cooking. Unfortunantely the food was awful - I'd be embarrassed to serve food like that, it looked like something had died on the plate. The chicken and parma ham were overcooked and everything was covered in a thick brown sludge (sauce). I ate what I could and when the owner came to collect my plate he looked too embarassed to say anything. I then ordered the homemade profiteroles (small size) as a dessert - surely they couldnt mess this up? What arrived was two very small profiteroles (which didnt look remotely homemade), some chocolate sauce and one overripe strawberry! It wasnt even a child size portion. I understand that staff shortages are a problem for many businesses at the moment, but if you can't find a capable cook close the kitchen.

SOGGY BOTTOM! I had a craving for pie! After surgery the previous week, I needed comfort food as any form of distraction from my pain. After a long time searching on Google for lunchtime venues to eat what I wanted, I decided the Bolton Arms would be great for lunch. My husband and I had not been there for a number of years where we previously had a fabulous dinner so it was time to visit again. Also, I didn’t want a corporate chain run group of pubs/restaurants bulk buying produce to ‘turbo’ in giant ovens. No, I wanted homemade real food. Reading the present menu homemade pie was advertised so I rang the Bolton Arms to confirm this item would be available and it was. We went for lunch. Drinks were ordered at the bar which we took to our table, then after a little longer than would have liked our food order was taken. Our food arrived after quite a long time. My pie steaming hot … but where’s the meat? I was presented with a solid hard topped pastry shell with just a minimal of ham hock meat (I was advised it was ham hock) which was drowning in an indescribable grey/white sauce and accompanied by soft carrots with an odd perfume aftertaste. The cabbage resembled a food stuff my grandmother would have boiled for two weeks! Cutting into this, the pastry base disintegrated leaving a pale soggy pie bottom. Nothing was seasoned. I guess the Chef had the day off! Please see two photos of pies I would expect and the pie I received. I think anyone reading this will distinguish the difference. A couple arrived after us and also ordered the pie. Watching over my husbands’ shoulder, each fork was heaped full of meat with a plate of steaming fresh vegetables. I have been short changed! Being hungry distorts immediate reactions and therefore a complaint at the time was not made. My husband just had a sausage sandwich which was nice – thank you. But for someone who never comments, did tell me he thought my food was pretty dreadful. The Bolton Arms is a traditional pub and listed building. The interior is dark and in desperate need of a little more comfort that would benefit modernising even simple fabrics and décor, but please put the heating on. I know it was lunchtime and only 4 tables were sat but to put my coat back on to keep warm is unacceptable. This pub felt cold, dusty and totally uninviting. Would we return. NO. But in a few years to see if changes have been taken on board. Yes. Good luck for your future The Bolton Arms.

We were looking for somewhere to eat a Sunday roast. Having tried 3 previous establishments that were all booked we came across the Bolton Arms that could offer us a table. We should have known better. The car park and restaurant were empty. Only 4 tables (including us) were full. We ordered the roast lamb; whilst the lamb was good the roast potatoes and roast parsnips had obviously been reheated and were hard and tasteless. This pub charges a premium price of £18.95 for the roast lunch, therefore our expectation was that it would be top quality. The head chef did come out to discuss our disappointment but we were not encouraged to believe that the standards of food will improve.

I’m posting this review again as the owner of this establishment thinks it breaks guidelines. Happy for Tripadvisor to review this. It makes me more suspicious of the lack of other poor reviews hereI visited this establishment with some friends based on reviews we had read. It looks like a lovely English pub from the outside and the menu was great. So far so good.Unfortunately when we walked inside, that’s where the experience went wrong. Firstly it’s a bit grotty. It’s not a restaurant. Neither is it a bar. It’s definitely not welcoming. Then we met one of the owners. As a Celt I was hoping for a warm welcome. Nope. I felt like I had intruded on his evening. We hadn’t booked in advance. Oh dear. We’d have to sit here then...We ordered food from the staff (bit friendlier than the owner). The food arrived and was very average. Pub grub. Average pub grub. Not what I was expecting. Definitely had as good a meal at Weatherspoons. Definitely paid much less though. We paid the bill and left. We don’t intend on going again. I recommend you drive through Old Basing and keep going until you reach Reading. You will not regret it.

Had a 3 course Christmas meal here. £30 per head so excellent value for money. The communication from everyone was excellent, especially Emily the head chef, and we booked our menu well in advance. The pub itself has a lovely drinks bar with wooden beams, an Excalibur sword, armour and a quirky pair of knitted pants!. The cider choice for me was limited (lots of fruit ciders) when all I wanted was a good plain strong bow. We ate in the front room (max 40 people in this room), which was nice. They had piped music and we asked them to put some Christmas music on which they did. Sadly the tempo of the music was a tad dirge, so maybe next year have something a bit more jolly for guests to listen to. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. We went as a group of 12 and I would consider booking here again as long as the Christmas music was changed. I can’t comment on the general pub menu as we ordered off the Christmas menu. I’m happy to go back and try their normal pub grub in the near future.

As soon as we arrived we werent welcomed at all, in fact quite the opposite. The bar lady was moody, unhelpful and abrupt. We ordered a drink and sat down enjoying a chat and a laugh. We were told no food for half an hour to which we said ok, to their dismay we decided to wait, then within a few minutes we were being told to keep the noise down! What ridiculous thing to ask in a public house when there was no one else in there! The bar lady was rude and Duncan the chef/owner was just as rude! They couldn’t careless that we wanted to stay and spend money in there pub... they wanted us out. Absolutely ridiculous. Don’t own a pub if you don’t want punters drinking in there and actually enjoying themselves. Absolute joke. To make matters worse the same thing happened last year. Never again. Visited several months ago and enjoyed the food but the service wasn’t great. We decided to give the place a second chance but, disappointingly, had a similar experience. When we arrived there were no staff to greet us so made our way to the bar. A lady pointed out our table back the way we had come but didn’t take us to the table. I had to move a heavy table that was in the way. Apparently moved to accommodate a pushchair earlier but no apology for any inconvenience. A couple of minutes later she brought our menus and asked what drinks we’d like. I asked to see the wine menu and was told it was in the back of the food menu. She didn’t come back for 20 minutes to take our drinks order - no apology for the wait - and took our food order at the same time. She made no real eye contact, didn’t smile and no please or thank yous either. Poor customer service that didn’t make us feel at all welcome. The meals were brought out by a young man who was the polar opposite. Friendly and professional and able to talk about food on the menu. Whilst the meals were very tasty and reasonable sized portions, it’s unlikely that we’ll give the place a third go. The more mature lady (Scottish I believe) really does need some basic customer service training. She’s severely letting down quite a fine establishment otherwise.

We picked the Bolton Arms from TripAdvisor as we wanted a pub near Basingstoke where we were staying for a family wedding, and we had a great evening. Both the food and drink was excellent and the staff were very friendly. The beer garden is a great place to eat on a warm evening. Thank you Bolton Arms

We popped in yesterday for a quick lunch between appointments at the nearby clinic. We were warmly greeted by the lady behind the bar. The Doombar was in excellent condition. All four of us ordered sandwiches and they were delicious, especially the fish finger sandwich. Excellent value and will certainly be back at the next visit.

Love to have this place as my local. The landlords are lovely and the food is always good. I’ve attended the quiz and it was great. Highly recommend.

Overpriced, limited menu and food average. The owner/manageress - unfortunately absolutely reeked of cigarette smoke! Not good when serving food.

We ate here on Saturday evening as we were staying nearby. We had a drink in the bar first and then went into the restaurant area. The bar is an impressive space with a high beamed ceiling and lots of interesting artefacts and memorabilia, and the restaurant is a cosy ,informal room with plenty of space between tables.

4 of us had roast sunday lunch, 1 lamb and 3 beef, all cooked nicely. Service was friendly and first class and overall a happy lunch. Not 5 stars because a little too much gravy, would be better served in a gravy boat and veggies were a little overcooked for our liking, we like them crunchy. However def recommend.

We visited the Bolton Arms on the Sunday after Christmas with special friends who needed some special time. We were very surprised to find ourselves in the beautiful restaurant on our own. The waitresses were lovely and very attentive. Our drinks came quickly and also our orders. Two beautifully tender roast lamb and fabulous gravy and 2 roast beef. The whole room was beautifully decorated with bright white linen clothes and napkins.

A huge thankyou to Nicole and her team, we were here for a family Boxing Day lunch, 14 of us, aged from 4 years to 81 years old. The food was great served on hot plates, all the waitresses were friendly and efficient. A big thumbs up from all of us.

First time at this lovely pub. The food was delicious and served on hot plates. Can’t fault the experience at at. Staff were attentive and made the day even better. Would recommend this establishment to anyone in the area, I’m going back in the new year for evening meal or maybe even lunch. Good parking available a bonus as well. Well done all of you for making our Xmas day great.

A very special, quintessentially English (can I say that?) pub. 3 months since our last visit but, as they say, things can only get better - and they do, here. The ability to mix'n'match from the menus is to be treasured. Programmed tills are too invasive. It would be a disservice to those things that we didn't eat (this time) to say that we have preferences. (Must try something different next time!) Everything we have tried to date has been freshly prepared and well-cooked, extremely tasty and good portion size. Smaller portions are available for those with a limited appetite. Hats off to the chef, kitchen team, the waiting staff and the cellar guru.

Have been there twice on a Saturday night to watch a band. The pictures on the web page are very misleading as the reality is that it's jammed full of tables with barely room to move. If you are just passing and pop in, then unless you sit down you are not welcome. The food is served throughout the entire area and woe betide you if you get in the way of the waitresses (or are they bar staff). If you are a local and they know your face I'm sure it's fine. The drinks are no more expensive than other country pubs. I've not eaten there but everyone seemed to be enjoying the food. There were some big groups eating Christmas Dinner leading you to think it's actually a restaurant. Also the bar is tiny, more like a restaurant's drink dispensing area. If you were standing at the bar there was no room for someone else to pass you by, be they customer or food laden staff.

Visited for lunch after finding via the good reviews on TripAdvisor and wasn't disappointed. Quirky venue in the middle of a delightful village. Was a bit concerned when we arrived as not many other customers but we couldn't work out why as the food was superb. Service was fast and friendly, will definitely visit again and would recommend others to.

We stayed at the Woolpack while in the area for a friends wedding. Lizzie was a fabulous waitress - checking in and making sure we were well looked after. New menu items such as the linguine were delicious and the burger was especially standout. Thank you team for a great stay
