Worst fish & chips I have ever had, it was supposed to be Cod, it did not taste like and Cod I have eaten before. What else can I say

Large sausage in batter was very nice but portions of chips were very disappointing, mostly small scraps and very greasy. Reply to response.... We were there Saturday 14th of September (afternoon). The chip portion size was fine but the chips weren't a good size cut and seemed over cooked and crispy ( no fluffy potato inside). Sorry for the poor review but we were disappointed.

Freshly cooked in 6 minutes while we waited. Medium was a very good-sized portion; can't imagine ever eating a large. Crispy batter, tasty fish and nice chips served to take away in compostable boxes. Recommended.

My son had a full portion of fish and chips. I had the senior portion. The fish was lovely, but I prefer the chips to be a bit more golden. Crispy on the outside, soft and fluffy inside. Just my taste, everyone else seemed to be loving it.

Delicious cod and chips on a little side street off the coastal road. Very large portion of fish and an excellent mushy peas as a side. Fish is cooked to order. Recommended.

Friendly staff. Bit of a wait as large food delivery in front, but entertained by a 96 year old playing the piano! Fish was large and perfectly cooked, chips and sausage slightly overcooked.

Just found out this has 3 for hygiene rating and serves Indian food and fish n chips very confused. Got to be 1 or the other.

We visited today just before the end of the lunch service as a family of four to takeaway. Fish cooked freshly. Such friendly staff - lovely to chat to, and very helpful both with the food choices and knowledge of the local area and sights. Proud to tell us they source as much food locally as they can. Fish and chips were excellent. Good portions, not greasy or burnt scraps like some chips can be. Excellent home made tartare sauce. A pleasure to visit here - we will be back on our next visit to Deal. Well done and thank you.

Called in for chips with our nieces so pleased we did the chips were cooked fresh and the services was brilliant The man was friendly and had a good laugh with us Can't rate highly enough

Great family run Fish & Chips. Food is served hot and fresh from the fryer. Room to eat in if you prefer and a piano if you have the talent. Competitively priced and not expensive. A few minutes walk from the high street and the beach.

Great Indian place, with plenty of Authentic Indian dishes. Highly recommended to try apart from their fish and chips.

The fish is always cooked fresh and we are always met with a smile and a chat. Everything is always piping hot and a decent size portion.

Best fish and chips I’ve had in a long long time. Came to Deal in the pouring rain and was so happy to find this fish bar. The portions were huge. The batter light. Fresh fish. Delicious. The price was fine, but why not have complimentary ketchup? I don’t like paying for ketchup as an extra. TBH it stopped me buying a round of tea and soft drinks. Anyway, staff were friendly and accommodating. Great place go there! Choose the mermaid! Enjoyed the food so much that I didn’t take pictures.

Had a lovely meal of Rock and Chips, very well cooked and tasty. Lovely chat with the owner about sourcing sustainable fish, msc and plastic pollution. We both agreed the way forward would be to make fishing nets from biodegradeble material again instead of nylon. We came in with a wheelchair and were made to feel very welcome. Next time we're hoping for a jazz session on the piano 😁

Went in and was greeted by this lovely young boy, who took my order and was so very polite. However, I do not like how the friar treated this boy. He had no respect for him, and was shouting at him to do all this stuff when all the friar did himself was put the food in and stand around chatting. The food was nice but personally I wouldn’t go back to this chip shop, due to the pure disrespect of the friar

When you are hot and tired and needing something to tide you over, to get some energy to continue our walk, we stopped in the Blue Mermaid. Because we wanted a kids meal of scampi and chips, £5.50 each, the face of the server was not impressed. She was trying to get us to order the senior portion. We sat in to eat. Omg, the food was disgusting, the chips seemed as though they were a couple of days old and the scampi were frozen from a packet. When we are by the sea would it be so hard to have fresh. By the time it came the scampi was burning hot and chips were luke warm. The scampi, 5 pieces, were laid out on the chips. Probably to hide how rough they were. I don't understand the high reviews. To be honest we definitely will not return. I'm sure there are better ones near by.

Went here today and was very disappointed, ordered a large cod and chips which was expensive however we came here a year ago and were really happy so we came again. I wish I hadn’t… The fish was tiny! Meant to be a large cod but was a kids portion size, do not waste your money, we took it back and they refused to replace it saying that’s a large and they weigh them… poor customer service, I will be going back to my regular chippy in sandwich Ossies who are more than generous with their portion sizes! What a shame…

Stumbled upon this place by chance when our chosen eatery was shut. So glad we went here instead! Huge portions, lovely tofish and onion rings. Friendly staff, nice clean seating area with cool artwork. Shame we are an hour's drive away 😞

Fantastic service from Miguel and his team - he was keen to show me how the fish is cooked from fresh and how he prepares and cooks his food - very passionate about his buissness and how his food is fresh ! Thank you for showing me behind the scenes and taking the time to explain everything & as usual the food was delicious 😋

Recommended by the lady who owned our holiday appartment. Really nice fish and chips eaten on the sea front. Couple of minutes walk from the front down a side street, but easy to get to. Freshly cooked and decent portions. Staff very friendly and chatty, so can't complain. Not the cheapest, but fish and chips isn't these days, so probably normally priced for on the coast.

Chips were greasy some overcooked some undercooked, Haddock was disgusting it tasted off and the batter never stuck to the fish. A male staff member "chef" constantly had his hands in his hair hygiene habits are not up to standard. The shop was grubby front of the fryers were dripping in filth who can guess what behind the counter was like .. Give this a very wide berth this has to be the worst fish and chips I've ever had. Proper hygiene training and cleanliness need applied here... truly disgusting and needs a visit by the council to inspect said premises... £20.20p thrown away due to inedible food.

Thought i would give it a try but that was a mistake firstly ordered sausage and chips was given battered sausage (allergies?) by a young boy who didnt look up very bad service chips one small scoop of old chips. Deal has many great fish and chips this is not one of them £5.50 couldnt believe it for a baby new potato slice up! Everything tasted old and cooked in black oilwhich hasnt been changed for while hope this feedback will improve the qiality and size if you want returning customers

The fish & chips here are brilliant, We recently stopped here with friends for some lunch & ate in. We shared a large cod & chips between two of us, the cod was delicious. Both fresh & well cooked, with possibly the best batter I've had from a fish and chip shop in Kent! We'll definitely be back.

Firstly would 100% recommend. But the young girl forgot 1 of the fish as we had walked a fair bit down the sea front before stopping to eat and realising the missing fish then traipsing back, I explained the missing dish that she tried to give from the hot plate wouldn't be satisfactory and I expected a freshly cooked order which she gave off a bad attitude saying the fish was still warm. The owner or manager I'm not sure stepped in and cooked the order fresh. It's the way the mistakes are dealt with that matters and he was fantastic. Just a shame about the young girls attitude. Fish and peas were amazing :).

Being the second time in a long while after visiting, after a bad experience previously (around four years ago) it seemed reasonable to visit to give here another try. Unfortunately, it wasn't great... Having come to spend the evening on Deal beach as an end to a three day trip, some chips sounded like a good idea. Having seen many good reviews, it looked like a promising place to go, close to the sea... The atmosphere of the shop was nice, with a lovely wallpaper and collection of instruments- as a musician, this was great to see! Staff were fast to attend and fast to complete the order- a medium portion of chips. However, upon leaving, after opening the box, it was clear the portion size for the £2.40 medium chips was quite small- a similar portion size to a kids meal! I would understand it could have been an accident, but was made worse by the fact the chips tasted, and a few looked / tasted undercooked and out of date! Such a shame as the place looked nice, and the reviews made it look promising!!

Small fish and chips was lovely and more than enough. Waited a little longer than normal to come but we'll work the wait and very hot and freshly cooked .all 4 of us loved our meals .and the 2 young men that served us were lovely.

Blue mermaid is a fantastic fish and chip shop and i would recommend it to anyone. The chips are fresh and always hot. The cod is also fresh and it's never chewy. The staff are amazing giving u a warm welcome before you order. But there is one little complaint. The food does take a while (because they always want to make it fresh) so maybe dont go if you're in a rush to work. But overall its probably the best fish and chips shop in deal and probably in kent.

Visited today (ate in) and was the nicest fish and chips we have had in a long time! I had the rock which was lovely and the chips were so nice and not greasy. Great portions we were stuffed! Staff really nice and friendly too, will definitely visit again

Excellent fish n chips. The fish was fresh and the batter light and crispy. The Peri Peri fish bites and tornado potatoes were delicious. Owner is very friendly, we were a group of 8 and the owners went out of their way to accommodate us and ensure we were comfortable. A place not to miss when you're in Deal. Will definitely go back.

Under new ownership since my last visit. Staff polite, friendly and attentive. Update.......open and fast becoming the best fish and chip shop in the south east, excellent produce and a must when im down visiting from London........... Definitely the best cod and chips I've had for a long time. Tryed this place after being disappointed with a competitor on the seafront which normally use. Will only use this fish and chip shop now! The large haddock is more like a medium and is literally tasteless. Seriously it was in name only and at no time could taste haddock. My partner was suspicious that they were passing off cod as haddock. The positive side is that the batter is nice and light which I gave the 1 star for. The chips were nice but small for a large portion. This place used to be quite good, but not anymore. We ordered from the Blue Mermaid using their online ordering system. Very overpriced for what you get and not good value for money, there are far better places to buy fish & chips in Deal. You answered 2 months late and don't tell me not to leave a negative review. You took my money and pretended to give me haddock. The portions were overpriced and very small and I paid for large. The previous owners would never have done this.

Arrived just before closing on a Saturday afternoon but very accommodating and friendly. Cod and Chips was freshly cooked and delicious. Batter was crispy and chips perfectly cooked, washed down with a mug of tea and lovely chat with the owner. Hidden gem away from the seafront.

Tried it as a change from The Seaview on the front. All freshly cooked, great chips and lovely cod in crispy batter. Also cheaper. Very good value for money. Will definitely go there again.

The fish tasted fresh but you need to change to fresh oil because there are black spots on my fish and also the mashed peas is so salty.
