In a part of the world where we're not short of decent fish and chips, Papa's stands out. Nice cup of tea, too. Thin batter that's lovely and crispy and a good-sized portion. Great fish as well.

Haddock and chips times 2; unfortunately one portion of fish was over cooked and dry, even though they were both taken out of the fryer at the same time. Unusually below par and a disappointing response that they will take them out sooner in future, when told of the issue on the phone.

Lovely food. Picked the grilled fish, was cooked just rite. Staff friendly and professional and always making u feel welcome. Would recommend to anyone in that area. The chips and any fish are always freshly cooked with a lovely batter coating that isnt full of grease and a lovely crisp when you take that bite and every time we use the place we always satisfied.

This is the best fish & chips in the area. The staff know me and greet me warmly whenever I go in. Like everywhere they’ve had to increase their prices; so as much as I love the food this is becoming a treat rather than a regular weekly meal. As they are alway busy I find calling and ordering ahead is useful, however, you’ll still have to wait your turn to be served, but this isn’t too long as they know what you’ve ordered so have it ready.

Shockingly expensive, although the food is perfect every time. We had 2 medium Cod, 2 scampi, 1 large fries, and 2 curry sauce and it came to over £40...... wont be going again untill their prices are more realistic...

The best fish and chips. We usually ring ahead and order our food, the staff are friendly and accurate with their timings. It gets very busy so we like to cut out waiting by doing this. The food is great & a family favourite after a busy day.

For years I’ve traveled several miles for the best fish and chips ever. But the last two times I’ve been very disappointed. Has it changed ownership? It’s now just ordinary whereas previously I’ve rated it as exception.

By far the best fish and chips in Sandwich, Kent is ' Papa's The Deep Blue Fish and Chips' near the quay. I asked for the chips to be cooked a little longer for added crispness .Superb! I was also given a huge cod which I then ate next to the river opposite. Prefect. Highly recommend.

Popped here why staying near Ash and I must say I am glad we did. The fish was lovely and large, even though we ordered the medium and chips were pretty awesome too. Only real issue is that parking can be a little tricky, but if you go late enough, then there are no restrictions on the single yellow line outside.

Delicious food cooked superbly and fantastic staff. We love it here so much that my fiancé contacted them to arrange a surprise fish and chip meal on the quay after he proposed to me whilst on a boat on the river. Thanks to Madeleine, Tony, Jess and Nick for making it so special 🙂

Used papas a lot over the years, always great. Last few times I've been has left me wondering if it had changed hands as the quality seems to be lacking the previous high standard. It seems to be in the same hands as Tony was there on my last visit. Like others have said the usually great light crispy batter is hard and dark. Are they changing the oil less often? I don't know. It just seems to be a less satisfying meal than it has for all these years. It is not going unnoticed.

Great chippy in the center, good prices, ginormous portions. Sadly there are scant sandwiches scattered in Sandwich, but the proactive visitor can make a DIY one here. Ask for an extra bun (bread roll), along with fish and chips (haddock is a great option, the large portion is enough for 2), a side of mushy peas, tartar and ketchup. Break off some fish, layer it with chips, criss-cross with ketchup and tartar sauce. Slather the mushy peas on both sides of the bun. For some extra zhuzh, add a fishcake. Why not? You're in Sandwich, baby! Enjoy yourself the best cheapest and tastiest sandwich in Sandwich. I call it the Papa Tom Sandwich. You're welcome.

Not as good as it used to be, smaller cod and not such nice batter. Still worth visiting though. Just don't expect a bargain take away.

Best fish and chips in the area, small shop so worth telephoning in your order. Upstairs seating area is small but clean with a nice view over the river if you get the window seat. Avoid Friday nights if you're in a hurry! Staff always nice even when very busy.

Upon trying the “competition” and near on poisoning my poor wife we thought we’d give papas a go! When we arrived the cabinets were empty! A promising sign that we were in for some freshly cooked food! What a delight! We waited for around 5 mins for 2 freshly cooked cod and chips by a very helpful young lady who served us, cooked our food and was more than happy to talk to us and keep us entertained while we waited! I can’t see how the reviews that have previously been written are true! Although I did witness for myself how the ‘locals’ speak to the staff and WOW! This girl has more self control than myself! If someone spoke to me with such disrespect I would refuse to serve them, however this young lady was polite, courteous and took it all in her stride! 10/10 for service and the food was THE BEST! We have ever had! We will be back papas!

Have not experience rudeness as so many seem to have complained about. I’ve been a customer for many years but the last two visits were very disappointing. Previous times, fish and chips were great but last two visits were surprisingly bad with thin overcooked haddock (one was cod) and nasty dark batter. As customer service seems so scary, I won’t bother to confront them so they’ve finally lost my custom. It’s 2 months later, I thought I’d give them another go as the previous several years experience with them was good. So I ordered by phone and was recognised. Not wanting confrontation, I denied being the author which was wrong of me but did state previously in this review that I would not confront them. The fish and chips were as previously experienced so today, Saturday 29th of Jan, I sent a friend in to pick up some more. Unfortunately, she was misidentified as my wife and not my friend and employee and found herself on the defensive not having knowledge of my post. The fish and chips were again great but please let it drop guys, the whole thing is getting out of hand. My first account was completely honest and accurate without malice or prejudice and came about through not one but two moments of disappointment. Thank you for your owners response (unnamed) Like you, I’ve been in business for many years and in 40 years of running my current business, regardless of giving exemplary service I’ve never expected to be praised for doing a good job however, if I get it wrong, especially more than once, I will expect repercussions. To explain my actions, after a long and difficult day I fancied some of your fish and chips and was horrified to see a meal that was fit for the bin which is exactly where it went. I couldn’t believe that as a longstanding and loyal customer, I would be presented with such a meal. Ok, so I said, “it must be a one off”, let it go however, after receiving your second rendition of the same, I felt deeply let down and in anger I withdrew my custom. You comment on it being only 2 occasions and that instead, I should have praised you for the previous 10 years. Nobody should expect praise for doing a proper job. Ok so recently, as stated earlier in this review I sent a female friend to collect our meal who incidentally had no knowledge of my review but was confronted by yourselves thinking she was my wife. She found herself cornered and forced to make it clear that her relationship with me is in fact as a friend and employee. She incidentally is a customer of yours in her own right. It was a horrific experience for her and totally undeserved. Making matters worse she told me that one of you were banding around photos of me in your shop. I demand you refrain from showing my pictures and hopefully delete them from your phone but firstly please tell me how you obtained them. Had you have dropped this issue when I asked you to, it wouldn’t have escalated to this. I now strongly believe that those who complained of being ill-treated in your shop can relate to my story as I’m now beginning to relate to theirs. My last meal was excellent and should I choose to continue buying from you, I’ll expect the courtesy I deserve without further interrogation. 31st Jan. Well done Tony. We’ve had Fish and Chips all along the Kent coast and have to say that the food from Papas is fantastic. We phone our order 10 minutes before we get to Sandwich and our food is ready when we arrive. It’s always freshly cooked and the fish is superb. It’s quiet reasonably priced too. The shop is in a little cottage next to Sandwich Quay, with nice riverside walks (to walk off your meal).

Being new to the area this takeaway was recommended to me and I can see why. Cracking fish and chips, great portions for the price, really nice and fresh, not greasy at all and quick service. The only gripe is something that most other reviewers have mentioned…… customer service…… you will definitely get salt and vinegar, but a smile and general thanks for the customer… that must be an extra that we have failed to find on the menu. Shame as it actually costs nothing at all, from what I have seen, people are polite to them so don’t see why it can’t come back across the counter. As I said maybe a hidden extra on the menu. Will be back as food is brilliant though, so don’t be put off.

I have been visiting Papa's since it opened many moons ago... Why do I go back and back again I hear you ask? well its the quality of the chips and I always go for Cod, which is always to my liking. It's my 'go-to' meal after a hard day @ work and it never fails to disappoint. Their chips remind me of the chips I had when I was growing up as a kid and brings back fond memories.... chip off the old block.

We decided to try Papas last night and we so pleased we did. Wonderful crispy battered Cod, yummy chips, all nice and hot at a great price. We loved them 🐟👍

Second visit, had cod and chips it was lovely

Freshly cooked... Great service and really good food, chips were cooked to perfection for us and a full selection of pies meant everyone was happy. Good sized portions so you don't feel over full when you've eaten or waste the food. The takeaway boxes kept our meal warm until we got home and the food was still crisp not soggy! All round a good eat and worth a visit either for a bag of chips on the go or a chippy tea...

My wife and I are 70 and after a nice walk around Sandwich on Tuesday, we decided to buy a cup of tea and a cup of coffee. The surly male about 30 years old took my money and disappeared out the back. After 10 minutes wait an older man appeared with 2 identical cups with lids on. I asked him which cup was which and he replied "One cup of coffee and One cup of Tea". So I repeated my question as to which was which and he mumbled something that didn't sound like English. At this point the younger male said to me that I have a Very bad attitude. I replied that I didn't understand what he meant, So he repeated it. I said that I was sorry if it came across like that but I was only asking which cup was which. I picked up the cups and left. We got about 20 yards down the street when all of a sudden, both of the males started shouting at me aggressively. The young male told me that he was going to beat me up and the older One said that he was going too as well. The younger male said that because I was an old man, it would be easy. I wasn't going to say anything on here but after reading several of the other reviews, I saw that this is quite normal behavior for staff at Papa's chip shop. They seem to think that us older people are there to be bullied and taken advantage off. I bet that neither of these so called Men would dare to try and speak to younger men buying from this shop. Maybe I'm wrong but having seen this behavior many times before, I think that they are just little men with big ego's and no balls. Anyone else had this type of trouble from this shop. I also read other reviews about this shop. A lot of customers have said that the food is excellent. I think that they may change their minds about eating there again if they could see the kitchen.

Overall decent chip shop! Chips were very good not greasy, fish great however the batter on the sausage was a bit soggy and not crisp. Service was very perfect and prices not bad - approx £15 for fish and chips, sausage and chips and drinks.

Takeaway chip suppers with pies, burgers, fishcakes and sausage. Perfectly nice. Chips not greasy at all and all the meals were piping hot. As per several other reviews we have to say the service is unsmiling and offhand. Maybe pressure of working hours and life in general but still ….

Good quality food ,possibly marred by staff working too long a shift? Lovely hot fish ready for immediate packaging,and generous portions.Mediums were more than adequate. A little in front house training focussing that the customers and “welcome”are also part of the equation would not go...

Had an abrupt and little rude "no" to the question "is anything gluten free" which made me feel pretty unwanted as a customer (its not like its my choice, I'm not being difficult). It took a long time to explain I was intolerant not allergic...

staff need to learn some manners and they are always extremely miserable. Normally food is to a good enough standard but my last order had chips that were pale and undercooked in all 3 meals.
