Castle Take-Away in Dover

We ate here recently as we were told this was the best in Dover. We paid for the Sea Bass @ $8 (6 pounds) but I agree with other reviews that it was good but the portion did seem small for the price. A bit greasy as well but it did taste good. Also got a burger and pie. Both were good but they charge extra for condiments.

The fish and chips had to be one of the best I've ever eaten.The COD was fairly with a generous amount of fries.Fish and chips were well priced.Service was friendly.Would recommend.

Thought I’d give them a try as my usual chip shop in dover was shut and reviews said they were recommended.Well , asked for large cod and was told only do one size so one size cod it was for a £5 and £2.30 for large chips assumed it would be a fair size anyway.Unwrapped it at home and nice portion of chips but I’m afraid the size of the cod was well disappointing to say the least as I’ve had larger and chunkier plaice in other chips shops. Won’t be going back and I don’t recommend to anyone but if you want a proper fish and chips nay I suggest Tony’s fish bar up London road and that dies proper fish and chips.

Do not believe what you see in the pictures. Ordered large cod, which turned out to be pretty much the same size as a large fish finger. Very, very greasy as well, I won’t be returning.

As a family reunion yesterday, a fish and chip supper on the sea front was required. We use this chippy all the time, it has yet to let us down.

Terrible experience. In a very worrying climate there was no control in this take away other than a one in one out.No staff wearing masks, very few people customers wearing a mask and leaning over your food to order. I had to pay for another portion despite them seeing what had happened. Average food and this company is luck to be open in such a climate.

We went here for our dinner when we stayed in Dover. It was lovely and the curry sauce was fruity which is my fave. It was really nice but I have given 4 stars instead of 5 as I thought it was very expensive for the portion sizes.

Waited outside as cooked to order, so should have been far better than it was. More batter than haddock, and very greasy.

Very disappointing with the portion sizing and the price for what you get is very expensive. My partner ordered scampi and only got 5 pieces for £5 and they were tiny! No tartar sauce in the bag either. Chip portion was tiny, we got a large but was more like a small. Can’t wait to have a chippy back home in the north where you get your moneys worth!

After recently purchasing Cod and chips here for myself and partner, I was very disappointed and will not be returning. The fish was very small even though each portion was £5. We normally use other Fish and chip takeaways in Dover and get a much more generous size and pay less, but thought we'd give this one a try. Very expensive and not worth the money.

Amazing Fish & Chip shops have come and gone all over Dover throughout the years, this is still in best even during these hard times.

They did one size of fish and chips due to lockdown. Portion size of both wasnt very generous in light of the pre lockdown cost. Batter wasnt crispy at all, rather flimsy. Feel that they are taking advantage of the current situation to give you less, worse quality for same cost. Shame as i considered this the best up until now.

Cooked to Order we waited for 10 minutes but absoultely worth it. They were soo polite and kept apologising for the wait but i would wait any amount of time for good food! Chips were nice and fresh, with it being as busy as it was they were frying non-stop the poor souls. Love this place it's the best in Dover, and sad to see the bogus reviews from others

i have been getting my food some time from this shop and i can say i had worse fish ever . with new UN professional people starting not good at all .would not get food from here again

Horrible. Fish cooked to order not crispy flat soggy greasy batter had to take home and dap with kitchen roll to soak up grease. Chips not fresh. Really not worth the calories

Love the fish and chips here, its always busy which says a lot! They even have a loyalty card. Very tasty and no complaints from us x

I went to this place at ten on a Saturday night, I asked for two cod on their own but was told they only had one, so I ordered fish and chips, the fish was small and old and the chips were horrible, I threw them all away, very disappointing, you would think that being on the coast it would all be fresh, not so here.

We were wondering around the city and found this gem! We decided to try the local fish and chips and were blown away by the meal! The fish was excellent and the chips were crispy! We will be going back again!

I always go to this place but recently have been disappointed. The batter was over cooked and hard. Large cod was more like a medium. The chips were nice. The staff are nice as well. Won't be going back.

We went hunting for Fish n Chips on our first night in Dover after a 9 hour flight and the drive from Gatwick. This could not have gone better.

We eat from castle takeaway every week. & think it’s the best in town, my family have been using this chip shop for over 20 years now & have never had a complaint. The fish is always cooked to order & is always still crisp when we get home (no salt & vinegar) leave that till u get home!!!!!

This is the best in town without a doubt. Fish and chips are the best and this is the place to go to. It has a couple of seats and some outside space. Don’t miss it!

Cheap tight little baby portions. Only went here as Toni’s in London Road was shut. Disgusting the way they charge £4.60 for stupid baby size cod hardly enough to fill a child. Large chip is like a small chip and chips re-cooked. Wld never go back. Too tight

As our last port of a 12 day British Isle cruise, and our final opportunity to sample fish-n-chips, we inquired with a few locals for the best location to dine on this classic meal. We are so glad that everyone asked was in agreement about Castle Take-Away. It's a short walk from the ship-to-town shuttle bus. There are a few small tables outside, and a couple more inside. If you'd like a beer with your meal, simply walk half a block to the small corner market store, and by the time you return, your BEST EVER fish-n-chips meal will be ready for you. The staff is super friendly, the portions quite filling, and perfectly cooked with a light batter. You will not be disappointed !!

Excellent service and only a short wait considering every piece of fish is cooked to order. Had Huss AKA Rock and chips, all freshly cooked. The fish was so fresh it was milky white and a good sized portion, batter was beautifully crisp and not a scrap of grease. Also caught up with another childhood favourite, a local soft drink called Bing.

I called into Castle take away as I usually do when I visit Lydden and have done since I was a child. The people were lovely and the fish was cooked to order. I had Huss and chips which wasn’t greasy at all, and ate it by the sea. They even had Bing which I love. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal. Looking forward to the next time.

Food is always fresh, cod is delicious. The Size of the fish is generous I have not eaten better fish in the area.

We went here to get dinner and then enjoy it with drinks at a local pub. We had the haddock and a large chips. It was wonderful!

We ordered two types of fish; cod and plaice, and also the fish roe. The place was too small for a sit down meal, and we were fine with take-away. The servings were bigger than we expected for the price. Both types of fish tasted good in the crunchy batter.

I was recommended this chip shop by the barmaid in Blakes next door and she said it is the best chip shop in Dover. It did not disappoint. The fish and chips I had were freshly cooked and delicious. Would definitely eat from here again if in the area.

We went into this establishment and was not disappointed. Spotlessly clean and the staff extremely helpful. Reasonably priced too. A bit out of the way unless you know it is here so give it a try - you'll certainly enjoy the produce. Absolutely delicious.

We often have a delivery from here from just eat. We find the food to be of a very good standard. Sometimes the chips can be a little soggy but they still taste very nice. We will order again as always

This is a very popular, traditional fish & chip shop with a good range of fish to choose from. Service can be a little slow due to the fish being freshly prepared and also due to the shop's local popularity ....... but it's worth the wait!

2 large portions of chips, both soggy and under cooked, some not cooked at all and a disgusting shade of brown. Very disappointing won’t bother again.

La barrière de la langue fut un dileme. Heureusement, le patron nouys a sauvé. Il parle "un petit peu le français" et nous a conseillé le cabilaud pané avec ses frites. Le tout à emporté et réglé par CB. Evite le change. Il y a une petite terrasse, deux tables à l'interieur et extérieure. Très axé sur la vente à emporter. Et c'était très bon et copieux. De plus, tous les emballages sont recyclables. Merçi encore au patron pour sa traduction. Snack très poisson et friture.

We had Fish and Chips here one night while walking the dog. Good fish and chips and a good price. 20:00 on a Thursday and there was quite a queue, so obviously popular. Added bonus for us was the tables and chairs outside so we could eat with the dog.

Probably the best fish and chips I have had! Crispy thin batter with perfect chips! One of those places you wish you could eat it all over again despite being full after eating your first portion! The lady who took our order could not have been more helpful and if we end up in Dover again we will eat here for sure!

We were stopping over in Dover on our way to Disneyland Paris and found this wonderful little chippy. The staff were very helpful as we had a fussy 9 year old and they were very welcoming and pleasant. The fish was cooked to order and was really nice and full of flavour as were the Cod bites that my wife and daughter had. All in all if you are in Dover look this place out if you want top quality fish and chips.

Got off the ferry and had a fancy for fish and chips. We were late, arrived 10 minutes or so before they closed, so the fish and chips were cooked to order. OMG, wonderful fresh fish, crispy batter and perfect chips ( the best chips I have ever had in a chippy). I can’t praise it highly enough.

Goed bereid met verse frites. De vis was heerlijk met krokant laagje, vers en niet te lang gebakken. Grote porties, zelfs als je ‘small’ bestelt. Aanrader!

Choix restreints mais bien mieux qu'un mac do par rapport qualité/prix .Préfèrer à emporter car juste 2 petites tables sur le trottoir. Parfait pour le dernier repas avant d'embarquer sur le ferry. My mom and I were waiting for our bed and breakfast to open for check in, and Castle Take-Away was down the street. Food was good and fresh, Cornish pasty was particularly good. Service was great, and they didn't mind us spending a couple hours there while we waited to check into our B&B;.

Cela ressemble plus à un restaurant à emporter qu'à un restaurant. Il y a néanmoins quelques tables dont 2 dehors sur le trottoir avec une belle vue sur le château de Douvres. Cela permet de rapidement manger un bon fish and chips à un prix correct.

If there was less than one star I would give it that. The fish was so greasy unbelivablely desgusting and the chips were old not just old reheated old! Service well if anyone herd that saying put a smile on your dial the lady that served us hadn't herd it! My advice dont wast your money huge thumbs down.

We have beautiful fish and chips here the staff are so friendly and everything is cooked fresh. The owner has been here for over 30 years and is Dover born and bred. You will not be disappointed with choosing this place for food.

I've made a habit of going to these guys a lot of lunch breaks! Hits the spot, more often than not it'll be Jumbo Sausage, but have a had the fish and their half pounder burgers are amazing! Nosh away!!

I live in North Wales and meet my friend every year in Dover and always look forward to our fish and chips here. A couple of weeks ago the weather was lovely and we enjoyed our delicious meal even more sitting outside. The meal tasted freshly cooked, was served with a smile, was very reasonably priced and tasted great. Only wish I lived nearer!

We ordered fish and chips 3 times and 1 chicken and chips. The food was very hot and we managed to take it back to our hotel and enjoy it; The two female staff were friendly and patient. We would have eaten in but the table was too small and close to the people standing in the queue - and too cold outside.

I have had better and worst fish in the UK. I have never had worse chip (fries for americans) they were not good. Before you judge me as an american not knowing fish n chips. I have eaten at leat 75 orders of fish n chips in the UK. The staff is very nice & it smells great. Not too keen on the fried chicken (1st time having fried chx in tbe UK) it was missing something. Better iptio s in Dover & Deal.

Este lugar te pone un pescado fresco, jugoso y con un excelente sabor. Las patatas fritas riquísimas también. Te atienden con una gran amabilidad. Nos encantó, volveríamos sin duda. Auf unserer Heimreise nach Deutschland wollten wir noch unbedingt ein traditionelles englisches Gericht probieren. Fish & Chips, was denn sonst und so sind wir hier gelandet. Auch wenn es ein Zufallstreffer war, wir hätten es nicht besser treffen können.Die Bedienung war freundlich, der Fisch war frisch und günstig und das ganze war schnell und lecker zubereitet. Der Cheff kam sogar noch auf ein Schwätzchen vor die Tür zu uns und erzählte uns das diese Fischküche schon eine lange Tradition hat.Wir waren bestimmt nicht zum letzten mal hier.So habe ich mir dieses traditionelle englische Gericht vorgestellt. Echt lecker !!Wir können es nur jedem weiter empfehlen.

I go here regulary and it's always good quality fish and good chips. The shop is open for at least 10 years now so that's a good sign. Enjoy views on Dover Castle from the patio. Nice!

This excellent fish and chip shop has been in business for 35 years and the owner and staff are superb. The fish and chips are the best in Dover and we are regular visitors. The quality of the fish is extremely good and if you have to wait for the fish to be cooked, it is well worth the wait.

Fresh fish with crispy batter cooked to order. Better than the restaurants around. Small inside and outside tables are available - but you'll often find me listening to the radio in my car outside scoffing my lovely lunch

We got the standard order of fish and chips and the portion was good. The chips were delicious and my my mom said the fish was scrumptious. I had a cheeseburger, it was okay. We would definitely go back if we are in Dover again. Especially since I want to know what a "Spam Fritter" is.

I have become a regular customer and the fish and chips are always superb. The regular size fish and chips is perfect but if you are ravenous then go for the larger portion size. There's usually a bit of a wait - either because of a queue or because a fresh batch of fish and chips are being cooked- but it's worth it. Best I've tasted.

I had the daily special of pollock and chips. It wasn't too bad especially for the price of 4.50 pounds. Two meals with drinks for lunch under £12
