best fish & chips I've had in ages

Unbelievable cod and chips 10/5 if we could rate it! Stayed in Dover for the weekend and what a great chippy. Lovely chippy chips too 👊🏻

Always our first stop when we get off the ferry, I love fish and chips and especially the curry sauce…..!!!!!!

Was so pleased to see that the castle fish & chips was open this Sunday. For the last 15 years I have been going to this place on arrival from France or just before leaving the uk. The person serving was very polite and helpful. Unfortunately the new owners have not been able to recreate the same quality, the cod was very poor, I suspect frozen and the batter was yellow and soggy, not golden and crispy as before or as we see in the photos. What a shame.

A good, very clean english chippy. We arrived in Dover feeling very hungry on a sunday . Hoping to find a decent chippy we came across this lovely chippy. Food is very good, the staff are friendly and the place is really clean. I definately recommend getting your fish and chips here. Theres food for vegetarians too.

Gluten free? NO, no, no! Went there for a Friday night fish and chip takeaway as I need gluten free. It, no, they don’t do gluten free and said they have never done so.

Phoned through a very large order which was last minute, and they were able to cater for us. Very friendly, helpful efficient service! Food was all fresh and piping hot

Castle Fish and Chips were recommended to us by a Dutch cyclist in St Margaret’s at Cliffe. I called to enquire about the menu and pricing options as we were looking for mini Fish and Chips and were sold a standard cod and a cone of chips which worked out at £8 each. Bargain! Asked if they’d be ready for collection if in 10 minutes and was assured they would. When we arrived the lady behind the counter confirmed the order and bagged it all up and we were on our way back within a few minutes. Perfect amount and really great fish and chips. Would highly recommend.

Delightful fish and chips place. The batter was perfectly crispy without being too greasy. The quality of the fish was pleasing, the chips were appetising. You can sit down inside or enjoy your meal with a lovely view of the Dover Castle. A big plus for not giving us awful wooden cutlery as many places nowadays. Enormous portions, you can stow away 🤗

Stopped off after the ferry chose this one due to the good reviews. We were not disappointed. The fish and chips were cooked fresh to order. The fish was excellent, fresh and a good size. The batter was thin and perfect, not a bubbly sponge of fat that it can so easily become! My partner had the curry sauce and even that was quality! Definitely be back next trip!

We were a large group of 11 that came close to closing but they still made us feel welcomed with swift and efficient service. The food was excellent.Thank you.

The food is so good, inexpensive and popular that unfortunately you have to wait a little long for it. However, the service is very friendly and everything you get is freshly made and tastes really good.

Great fish and chips, limited seating but well worth a visit

Walked in after not visiting for a good few years ordered a cod n chips sat and waited patiently looking round the shop was incredible clean staff looked very clean n tidy after 10 minutes the lad called out my order . I walked up to the counter and was handed the smallest piece of fish I have ever seen in my life we’re talking 3 fingers of a kitkat bar and some awful looking chips I questioned the size of the fish and was told we only serve 1 size . The lad looked embarrassed to serve the chef popped his head over I left the food on the counter didn’t even ask for a refund and walked out leaving the offerings behind. I’ve found out since the chippy is under new ownership and the new owners are new to the shop and industry I honestly hate to think how many customers they have lost serving a product so poor .

Finally, after trying to find quintessential fish & chips all over London, in Oxford, and in Bath, the search is over. Castle Takeaway, a clean and small shop run by lovely people who do not know quite how good their food is delivers the real deal. We had Cod. The fish is LIGHTLY battered and tasted uniformly flakey without loosing any flavor or texture. Rather than the usual over fried too hard and thick crust found everywhere else, this batter was crisp, delicate and tasty. Everything was, of course made to order. The fries were outstanding. Thick, potato chips were hot but not overcooked. They were doused with malt vinegar and salt. No pre-made food here. Just the best fish & chips vever.

Place was clean and prices very reasonable, but food was very very greasy and not as tasty. On the other hand mush pea was delicious!!

My family arrived in Dover around lunch time and this place smelled incredible. We got 3 plates of the Cod and Chips and my Daughter got a burger and chips. Loved the Cod!!! It was flaky and fresh and the batter was spot on. I am not a huge fan of Fish but I would definitely go back. Staff was patient with us Americans trying to decide on what we wanted. This being our first meal on England, it set the bar pretty high.

It's the best fish and chips around. It's a must-have when I visit Dover.

Soggy batter and just bland fish, curry sauce was very sweet for a chip shop curry sauce. Chips were on point though and very hot. Reasonably priced and a wide variety which is good. Will go again but just for chips I think.

Great food however curry sauce missing. I phoned and said I'd collect after the kids have eaten there's at the beach and heat mine up later. Staff apologetic on the phone. When I went to collect the sauce I was spoken to like I'd made the whole thing up and it was extremely embarrassing.

Needed fish peas and a bread bun before departing back to Europe. I was helped extra fast as I needed to catch a ferry. Delicious and service with a smile.

It was definitely not the best fish and chips I've ever had. The waiters were very nice though.

Normally the best fish and chips in Dover. Tonight the fish is very greasy, no crispy batter, in fact soggy. The chips were hard and greasy and lots of black bits. Very disappointed, as not a cheap meal anymore.

My wife and I decided to grab some food while we were out to save cooking when we got home. Castle takeaway has always been regarded as amazing, so we decided on this place. I like cod bites, simply a fillet of cod cut in to chunks and served, normally between 6 and 8 chunks. I received 3 small strips of not very flavourful fish. The batter was soggy, no a single bit was crispy. The chips were also soggy. For what was always a go to place, it was a big disappointment. There are other outlets that serve proper cod bites and better cooked chips in Dover. I do hope this was a one off experience.

Best chippy around great taste freshly prepared

I've been here before and it was good. Today however, the batter didn't cover the fish properly and so there was a lot of oil inside the meat, and the chips were way too small. Either I got the bottom of the scoop, or the potatoes were tiny. The curry sauce was good and the place was very clean. I was pretty disappointed.

Passing through, so no agenda...apart from review for those who visit Dover. Decent chippy... Being from Yorkshire, my biggest complement is to say that if I was in Dover again, I would definitely pop in. Great fish, if you are hungry, order big chips, but small was enough for me (wife didn't finish them). Fish cooked freshly on arrival, 6 choices of fish! Price was reasonable, I thought, in comparison to the rest of country. Trying to be a bit more eco-friendly, paper and card trays (plastic trays are never good for taste with quality fish or chips). Thanks guys.

Had great fish & chips here on our last night of visiting GB. Portion of scampi as dessert 🤣 went down with a bang aswell. Highly recommend this take away. Whenever I am back over I now know where to go.

This place is great!!! It is only take away but I’m willing to bet that they serve best fish in all of the UK. The service is impeccable and the staff is so professional. I highly recommend this place.

A great little fish and chip shop off the Main Street but local free parking around it’s easy to get to. The staff were friendly and cooked our fish and chips to order, so it tasted amazing! The fish wasn’t oily and still had a good taste to it. Perfect portion size for a lunchtime meal, we had a standard portion of cod and chips. Fairly priced and would recommend!

After a long and exciting day at Dover Castle, these generously battered crispy fish n chips were the perfect puck me up for the journey home.

The food is nice here but the portion sizes for the chips is 👎👎👎 the tray is not even full. Honestly I have always ordered a large from chippys to share with my child as I can never eat many but yeah I couldn't do that in this chippy 😂 I'm not being greedy, i've just never seen a large portion so small. Other than the portion sizes on the chips the place is nice

Quality of the chips was deadout and below par. The chips were very soggy and literally swimming in oil and the portion was proper stingy. I requested a regular portion and they served me a small portion. The only marginly good thing about it was the savoli but even that was below par. I'd personally give this stingy den a big swerve. I most definitely give it a 0/10. Staff are very gossipy and very insinuating also. AVOID AVOID AVOID.

I attended this restaurant a number of weeks ago and I am still telling people about how crisps and light the batter was on the fish. This is without question one of the best portions of fish and chips I have had in a long time. Watch out Captain Birdseye there is a new kid on the block!!!!!

Decided to try a fish & chips place that had more of a local feel and not in the "tourist" areas. When we came to the restaurant, there was a line up waiting for their food. We knew that this was going to be great. Had the cod & chips with mushy peas and curry sauce. It did not disappoint! I highly recommend coming here for proper fish & chips. It was absolutely delicious.

The Fish and Chips are Fantastic, Cod. The owners are so nice and friendly. Once you order, your food is made fresh in front of you. My only complaint is that it needs more seating. I know it’s a takeaway, however, this little town gets lots of visitors and for us visitors more seats would be appreciated. Thank you for an Amazing Lunch

Best fish n chips in dover bin coming here for years wish the service was quicker the customer service isn't that good used 2 be they need 2 smile more need 2 say hello + thank you need a lesson in customer service otherwise fab food

Superior chips most visits. Good batter on fresh fish. It's a chip shop but manages to do better than a lot of restaurants in terms of quality. Fresh chips that haven't been frozen perhaps? I like the people as well and now go out of my way to frequent there. The rest of the menu is standard for a chip shop. Burgers are cooked to order and tasty. I wish they did a pricier burger, I'd pay more for the superior quality meat.

Great customer service and freshly made meals. I went for the old faithful fish & chips - it was amazing. You have the option to salt your meal (perfect for those who need low sodium meals).
