Middle Street Fish Bar in Dover

Popped in to buy takeaway, I was ignored on arrival whilst the staff were discussing Facebook! After waiting I had to interrupt the conversation to make my order, no apology was offered, I felt uncomfortable and felt that the staff are rude. My bag of chips was very small for a large and also greasy and soggy 😒 I would not recommend this to anyone.

Fish very small and thin, skin left on and completely unseasoned. Battered sausage was tiny and curry sauce is the thin Chinese style - not the proper thick stuff. As other reviews have said, the lady on the till was rude and surly. Overall very disappointed!

By far the best fish and chips I have had in Deal and in the whole south of England. I look forward to this every time I'm in Deal. Tasty fresh fish with crispy batter fried in a nice tasting, clean oil and the best chips - soft but also fried in a clean, tasty oil to give them a decent bit of crisp on the outside.

We’ve been visiting Deal for many years and always looked forward to going here for dinner. Sadly, the past 2 times, we’ve been really disappointed. The fish was great, but the chips were dripping with oil and the portion size was so small, Literally a 1/4 of what you get in other chip shops - And I’ve been to many! We even ordered large. My family were hungry an hour later. Ended up going home and cooking burgers. Come on middle street fish bar - SORT YOUR CHIPS OUT 🙏

Really lovely fish and chip shop in Deal and recommend it. Fish was excellent and the batter was delicious. I had the small chips and large fish and it was a tough finish, so maybe you could get medium fish small chips. Great place to get fish and chips when visiting. I didn't get a photo as I was soooo hungry I ate it too soon but got a snap of the inside and you see the excellent fish at the right of the photo

Remembered this place from 30 years ago. Tried again when visiting and the best fish and chips ever.

What a shame we had such rude service here. The man serving behind the counter on the takeaway seemed to be absolutely furious that we were ordering loads of food! We were made to feel like we were annoying and in the way because we were making such a big order. The girl working there was wonderful I should add despite her colleagues rude behaviour she remained professional and polite. When we got the food home it was good portions and nice and hot but extremely greasy. Wouldn't recommend.

Very busy fish and chip outlet, with many local recommendations. They only take cash, which can be awkward these days if you have not noticed the sign on the door. Good size portions and nice flakey cod - but it was very greasy, with soggy chips and the take-away bill for two portions was £22.

Wow! This place past my expectations, from the outside it looks like any other fish and chip shop. But you can sit down at the back of the shop through a side entrance. Pleasant service, service with a smile, which is rare these days. I ordered small cod and chips, when it came it looked more like a large portion, fantastic! The taste was also fantastic succulent cod and crispy chips. I would definitely go there again. Only one disappointment, no lemon to squeeze on my cod, I put that down to me not asking, otherwise just perfect. You can park your car next door to Astor Community Theatre. 3 min from there.

We love this place!! Great food at a great price. Well worth the small wait to get fresh! Also, can't get better than the short walk to the sea-front to sit and eat your food with a great view.

Lived up to expectations, one of the top 5 F&C I’ve ever had.

We very often visited this Fish Bar travelling from afar and quite a long way especially for the best Fish n Chips ever. Such a shame and disappointed that they now don't open lunchtimes until 4 pm. when we'll be home again.

Part of the attraction of trying this Deal fish and chip shop were due to the comments of several previous customers reviews who felt the owner was of the "Basil Fawlty" school of management. Over the years I have encountered a few members of the hospitality industry who had somewhat eccentric approaches to customer service and was interested to see how the Middle Street Fish Bar compared. Braced for a challenging experience I found on the night Deal's very own "Basil" was busy and was just getting on with his work, not a bundle of laughs perhaps, but cooking to order and providing very tasty fish and chips, ample in portions and good value. Just shows, these reviews are subjective. We were very pleased with the food here. It's cash only, but that should not be a problem.

Apart from the parking problem their we had large cod and chips and a fish cake to share from here and got to say the fish was really nice and cooked fresh however there was not a great deal of chips and unfortunately they were not up to par maybe around 4/5 out of ten, the fish cake was ok but I have had better.

Queues out of the door speak volumes . Nuff said.

We came to Deal on holiday and on the first night we came here for a takeaway. It’s Cash Only and although we checked we had enough on our person for 2x fish and chips they only had large fish left, taking the cost over what we had. No matter; they served us anyway and allowed us to pay what we had. The large fish really are LARGE. Cooked to perfection, flakey, pure white and delicious. The batter fresh and crispy. Same for the chips. We can’t wait to return. I could absolutely eat this meal every night of the week - and if Deal wasn’t full of fabulous restaurants I probably would.

Oh my God. I had forgotten how good fish and chips can be. First post lockdown visit to the middle street fish bar. We left an couple of hours later we left with big smiles.Looked at each other and said 'best meal in Deal for a long time'. Very difficult to explain just how good this meal was. You could hear the crunch from the chips and fish. The chips were 'skin-on', a lovely touch. The tartare sauce lovely. Almost forgot to mention the lovely beer and bottle of Prosecco we enjoyed with the meal. See you again very soon.

Always excellent quality and in these days of increasing inflation, good value. The never had a bad meal.

Lived nearby for years and had a takeaway or two, always good. Decided to try the restraint above the chippie. Decor very clean. Excellent cod and chips around. The chips are marvelous, Highly recommended.

Fish and chips both pretty good. Portions sizes smaller than average. But the service is at best businesslike. And cash only? Really. I suppose some people like the ‘back in time’ idea.

Fish and Chips is in my view largely misunderstood. It is over too greasy and cooked in inappropriate oils. Here, it’s divine. Well cooked, and clearly in the best oils. Recommended.

Why is everyone so sensitive it’s not like your spending fortunes or buying a house what do want from people?your only buying fish and chips , as for the customer service I found the guy not miserable but dry and found he’s attitude quite amusing....

We own a property in Deal and in the past have had fish and chips from this place, the food then was fantastic but mar and pa were very rude to customers. Now the food is bad, the service is bad and now the shop has been handed down to the son or daughter they are even ruder to their clients and the portions are more expensive and smaller, I hope they go out of business as they deserve to nobody wants bad service bad food and rudeness. The best fish & chips i have had for a long, long time. Batter was fresh tasting & crispy. The fillets were chunky and very white. Exquisite taste.The chips were also excellent. A distinctive taste. We had a takeaway and ate our meal on the beach.It was that nice my wife and I felt obliged go back and pass on our thanks.

Once again, a beautiful and tasty plate of fish n' chips courtesy of Middle Street Fish Bar. Service in their newly redecorated and socially distanced restaurant was fantastic from the young lady attending our table. All Covid 19 protocols were observed. Highly recommended to all.

So far we've been lucky eating out on our visit to Deal and the surrounding area and here's another example. This is a great fish and chips shop - the often enormous queue attests to this. Everyone seems to say it's the best in the area and I can well believe it.

Live locally and have used before ... Are they under new management ? As our visit yesterday is not one we wish to repeat which is very disappointing. Tried phoning during opening hours for the 3 days before visit as we were a large party - phone was never answered. Arrived at 6.15 pm asked for table for 7 and were directed to use the two tables at the back (Only one table occupied) ... so we moved smaller table up to the bigger one so as a family group we could sit together ... were quickly told that this was NOT Allowed we had to sit in 2 separate groups. Having explained that we did not wish to do this and in fact one member of party yet to arrive was on double crutches with leg in cast so would need the extra space we had allowed by moving on table up we were told management did not allow it . Said we were sorry but we were sitting as one group If management cared to appear we would discuss with them. Explained we were waiting for 4 others who would arrive about 6.30 pm .. At 6.35pm waitress came over, still only 3 of us at table, and asked if we were ready to order.. said once again .. “no we were awaiting others”. She went away only to return and say they needed to know when others would be here so I repeated that they were on way and would arrive as soon as they could. Other members arrived 2 sat down whilst one waited to help my brother on double crutches and with a cast on leg up the steps and to the table. Waitress comes over and says , you can order now. I sent her away saying we would order when all had looked at menu. Waitress continued to try to take orders even though half table had not even seen menu. Food eventually arrived, no condiments were offered and we had to ask 3 times for tartare sauce and ketchup we also ordered 4 rounds of bread and butter and only got 3. Most food was reasonable but sister-in-laws veg option was not good £4.00 for small bowl of chips, mushy peas inedible (the menu only offers a veg burger so if you don’t like that you are left with chips and mushy peas or pickled egg .. not even option of a veg sausage). Waitress return to clear plates which she started to do even though 3 people were still eating .. asked her to wait until all finished. Asked twice for the bill and then were not bought our change .. had to ask for it on the way out and then they could not remember which table we were or how much change we were due. Sorry will NOT go back .. used to be a really great place to go but on this occasion treated as if they were doing us a favour and got impression that they just want to get rid of customers and go home. Will revert to using Castle Fish bar at Walmer .

Found this gem of a place, slightly hidden way from the hustle and bustle.. we had a yummy haddock and chips for our first supper in Deal! There are so many fish and chips shops to choose from and think this one is definitely a main contender- also the restaurant at the back is simple and service was wonderful!

The best fish and chips that you can get! We travel 70 miles each weekend to have our lunch here. Totally perfect fish and chips and a comfortable restaurant. Everything is freshly cooked the fish is so fresh and tasty. Excellent friendly staff. You cannot beat this place!

This has to be the best fish and chips I have ever had. The restaurant is tucked away off the main thoroughfare, so is much quieter, which was lovely. It is waitress service and the girl that served me was lovely. I just can't fault the food, the service or the cleanliness of the place

We have just come home from a day out in Deal. We wanted to find a good fish and chip shop and was recommended this little fish and chip shop with a clean restaurant just behind the main promenade. It was unpretentious, but clean and pleasant. The fish and chips were delicious, fresh out of the fryer but not heavy and greasy. The chips were to die for!

Visited as a party of eight, including an 86 year old. Explained that for our elderly guest I was happy to pay the full amount for the meal but could they please just put a small portion of both fish and chips on the plate. The response ‘NO, we are not allowed to do that’. Had we not already struggled our elderly relative up a flight of stairs we would just have left. Food when it came was ok, nothing to get excited about. Obviously these folk are impervious to either world food shortages or the issues of food waste. Won’t rush back

When in Deal we always head for this fish and chip shop. Good quality fish and chips with crispy batter on the fish. Cod and chips and a can of diet coke sitting on a bench looking out to sea.. perfect.

We stopped for chips as my daughter was hungry. I said that I'd have one to keep her company. they were so good I just kept taking more and more! I think they may have used maris piper potatoes - certainly they were very tasty.
