Had a decent enough meal (fish and chips) at a decent enough price, but oh my goodness, I think the fact that there is supposed to be any social distancing and other measures to help prevent the spread of Covid-19 has completely passed them by!! There was a nod to track and trace - a book to fill in, but no-one checking if you had noticed the book let alone filled it in. There was a perspex screen at the bar, but the staff constantly going around it to make talking to customers easier. There were pots of hand gel, but saw no staff use them. No face coverings worn by any staff. No cleaning of items (like salt and pepper pots) in between people using them. The staff were hugging each other and customers constantly and there was hardly any space between tables or people generally.Staff generally polite, but running around like aimless headless chickens would be an apt description.

Popped into the Black horse today for a drink . 1st impressions were really good Sanitiser on the way in, Clip board for track an trace We were asked to take a seat at a table and someone came to take our order. Then a group of young people came in and were greeted with hugs from the bar staff. They were served at the bar as a group with no social distancing, even though there was tape on the floor! They all sat down at a table near me . bunching round a small table which meant they were not 2 metres from each other or from us We took our drinks outside and finished them and left. We will not be returning I did not feel safe.

My wife and I went here for Sunday Lunch 30th August. We were greeted by the wonderful Paige who was our waitress. The service was swift and the food was incredible. I started with the whitebait whilst my wife had the Camembert. for mains we had the roast beef. The food was cooked to perfection and the vegetables wasn't boring. So many pubs just do boring veg but we had a wide range including red cabbage, cauliflower cheese, roasted parsnips carrots broccoli. The landlady was amazing and the staff made us feel like part of a family or like a regular would feel even on our only ever visit.Really do try this place if you are near by as its wonderful.More importantly they take social distancing and COVID very seriously so you do feel safe in their environment.Once again thank you for making our weekend perfect x

Sat for 10 minutes before somebody came to take our drinks order. After 35 minutes we had not received our drinks so checked at the bar and was told they had lost the order. When the drinks finally arrived we placed food order of cod and chips and scampi and chips. Unfortunately the scampi was way overdone and burnt and the peas were out of a tin. When we came to pay they tried charging £69 due to losing the order yet again and the waitress had to confirm what we had. By the time they sorted it out we had spent another 20 minutes hanging around. Would not recommend this place

The staff were very pleasant and helpful. The menu is not extensive but has a reasonable variety. Overall pleased and glad we took no notice of the poor reviews. Now if they put steak and kidney puddings back on the menu I'd give an even better review!!

We ordered the homemade garlic tiger bread as a starter and was immediately disappointed..the bread was flat and no way could it be described as Tiger bread...My husband ordered fish and chips and I ordered liver and bacon..after 50 minutes our meals arrived..my husbands was lovely and a good portion size...my liver and bacon was appalling...I had 3 tiny pieces of well done liver and 1 section of bacon....there was a side dish of unappetizing veg that I can only assume was put on my plate to make up for the lack of liver and bacon.. I spoke to the waiter about the size of the dish and he apologised and offered free sides or adifferent dish...as we hadalready waited so long I refused and said I would share my husband's fish and chips...some time later the waiter said he had spoken to the chef and they were going to take my meal off the bill !!..... we were certainly not going to pay for a dish we had refused and sent back...lovely pub however leaving the young front of house to deal with a chefs mistake in my opinion is inappropriate...

Went on a Tuesday evening and was really disappointed. Both bitters were off...the baked cod on the menu arrived not cooked through (hubby just went hungry with no dinner)...the bangers and mash had no caramalised onion in it as stated on the menu...and the very thin watery gravy arrived 5 minutes after the food had been brought to the table so my food was getting cold. Its a nice pub so what a shame the kitchen lets it down.

We were not given a menu but asked what we wanted so we ordered two roast dinners. Even though it was not particularly busy as we were in later afternoon, service was pretty slow. The waitress was apologetic and the landlady sitting with another member of staff on the table next to us , who I’m presuming we’re off duty eating and drinking wine did take off the price of one starter and main off the bill . We were staying for the weekend in the area so I looked on trip advisor for somewhere to eat for late Sunday lunch. We weren’t disappointed by previous reviews. It’s a lovely, cosy pub with smiling service - and we were a party of 8! It has a reduced menu for sunday lunch but we were only there for the traditional lunch anyway. We ate at 4pm and in other pubs, eating that late can result in the “dregs” or dried up food. Not here! Everything was freshly cooked, nicely presented and piping hot. Great food. Nice place.

We visited this pub in September for lunch with two friends. The menu was quite good. We started off sharing a camembert which was very good and enough for two as a starter. My husband and one of our friends had the burger with the onion rings. The onion rings had been overcooked and were inedible. Another friend had a panini with skinny fries. The fries had been over cooked and were so hard and fatty she could not eat them. I had scampi and chips (nothing else was served with this no salad or peas). The scampi also had been so over cooked they were hard and empty of any scampi. I complained to the waitress and she offered another meal. I refused this and asked for two of the meals to be removed from the bill. This was done without any hesitation as she agreed the meal was terrible. We had ordered more drinks earlier but these never arrived, We would certainly not visit again.

I have never written a critical review of a restaurant before. Unless I have a really good experience I simply remain silent. A look at my other reviews will confirm this. However, my experience tonight, and the way it was dealt with, has prompted me to write this review. The Black Horse is a pleasant recently renovated pub which describes itself outside as 'friendly'. We visited for a drink during the afternoon, liked the look of it and booked a table to return later. The staff were friendly and welcoming. We ordered the first two courses of what we expected to be a three course dinner. Our starters (calamari and whitebait) were unexceptional but perfectly fine. One of the main courses on offer was lambs liver with bacon and mashed potato. One of my favourite dishes, I have eaten it many, many times. When it arrived I tasted the different elements. The mash, bacon accompanying greens and jus were all fine, but the liver had a very, very strong taste of lemon. I'm one of those people who was brought up to never leave food, so although it was pretty unpalatable, I ate it. That was a mistake as I was later to find. When the waiter came to collect the dishes he asked if everything was fine. I then broke the habits of a lifetime and told him that the liver had far too much lemon on it. He said he would let the kitchen know. I wasn't expecting a refund, but simply wanted the chef to know what I thought. A few minutes later a manger came to tell me that there was absolutely no lemon on the dish. At this point I began to worry. If there was no lemon on the dish, what could I taste? I was assured the liver was fresh that morning and that nothing else had been added. I was also told in a very patronising tome that other customers though it was fine. I suggested the chef might have squeezed lemon on my dish in an absent minded moment, but this was immediately dismissed. I got the clear message that because I had eaten the dish, my complaint could not be valid. I was told they would cook up another batch and bring it for me to taste to see if it was the same. This never happened. When I explained that I have never written a negative review of any restaurant she told me if I wanted to that was fine. It was simply a matter of my 'taste' being different from others. She also re-emphasised that I should not of eaten it. I realise with hindsight that was a mistake, but that does not excuse the way my complaint was dismissed. We decided to pass on a dessert paid the bill and left. I'd give this place a wide berth. Not because all food there is poor, but because if anything doesn't match up, you are unlikely to have your complaint dealt with properly.

The burgers came out and the plates were full nice crispy onion rings and a good amount of chips, sadly the onion rings were the star on the plate, the burger was very dry, the bun was also dry, piece of bacon which was very crispy, large lettuce leaf, slice of tomato and a small amount of cheese, the burger had no sauce in it which did not help. £12 each for the burger I was left disappointed as for that price I was hoping for a really tasty burger.

The restaurant is new refurbished and really lovely. The staff were very pleasant BUT, our food took ages to come and when they finally did, only 2 of our 6 meals came out and the rest were about 30 minutes later!

Visited this pub on route to Dover after an excellent previous visit 2 years ago. From the offset it was like a scene from Faulty Towers minus Basil himself. The young barman who’s first shift it was got drinks orders wrong and actually lost a drink he had already pulled. We felt sorry for the young lad who was taking orders as it was obvious he had never done the job before and had no training from the owners as the food orders brought to us did not reflect what we asked for or was advertised on the menu. We had to ask when our main course would be brought out after waiting and wondering if they had forgotten our order and had to ask for cutlery after our meals were brought out. They couldn’t even get the cutlery right as they brought plain knives instead of steak knives which made it tough to eat our steak. Would not recommend and definitely will not be stopping near this pub again when next venturing to France

New management, friendly and welcoming. Lovely atmosphere, clean and fresh, well arranged and comfy seating. Restricted menu as we went on the first night they were serving food. We had burger and chips- absolutely delicious! Very generous portion at a very good price for the quality of the food. The burger was stuffed full with a large moist and tasty beef patty, mushrooms, cheese and really good bacon- all cooked beatifully. The onion rings were amazing and the chips, really good. Will definately be going back to try their new menu! So good to have a fantastic local again!

We were staying at the camp site over the road and tried this pub. The food portions are generous. Thought we could share a starter of spring rolls and thus manage a pud, alas, we miss judged it, so beware! starter-main or main-pud!

We were here today for lunch there were four adults two children and three large dogs. We were greeted with a friendly welcome and there were water bowls for the dogs. The food was lovely and plenty of it. Staff were very friendly. A member of staff even went out of her way to go and get cranberry juice for my grandson. Would definitely recommend this friendly pub and if we are that way again would most definitely go back.

Rang and booked a table for two. Arrived early and surprise they were ‘t aware. Informed that there would be a 40 minute wait. The waitress was unaware of what beers were on tap, not a good start. We had to request a menu but were not informed about the specials board. Our first choice of main course was sold out. This should have rung louder alarm bells. One hour later and we were aware that no food was coming out of the kitchen to any of the other 5tables waiting for food. Half an hour later still no sign of any food not even a nibble was offered no apology was offered management running around like headless chickens. Never in all my experience have I suffered such abysmal service. My advice to the management would be get out will you can because service of such a poor standard, not just poor but totally atrocious is not acceptable. In the end driven by hunger we got up and left. If you are contemplating a visit my advice would be get a take away from the Chinese in Hawkinge. It is not my style to complain but this sad experience deserves notice.

We eat at The a Black Horse when we’re staying at the campsite across the road. It’s been going downhill over the last couple of years but the new management have really improved it. The bar was quite busy, the food was very good and they welcome dogs.

Goodness me, what a surprise The Black Horse, Densole turned out to be! We visited on a Monday but unfortunately no food was being served that day and there were just a few locals drinking. However the helpful owner suggested another eatery so a brownie point there!! As we were still in Densole the following Sunday we wanted somewhere local for lunch and phoned through to book a table just in case and just as well as we were lucky to be fitted in as it was so busy. The staff were all friendly and attentive and the service could not be faulted. We both had the Sunday roast which was not limited to just one type of meat (another brownie point). The meal was served in a large Yorkshire pudding and surrounded by perfectly cooked vegetables. A side dish of vegetables was also included and all perfectly cooked. In fact we counted 9 different vegetables!!. Separate gravy boats also came with the meal, which was ideal for us as we very often have to ask for more gravy and the horse-radish was to die for! I was amazed at the portion sizes so a good appetite will be essential when visiting The Black Horse for a meal. We will definitely visit again and wiash the new owners/managers every success for the future. We also look forward to seeing the improvements/refurbishments when we visit again!!

We recently stayed at the campsite across the road from the Black Horse and visited the pub on two consecutive nights. The fabulous staff are welcoming and friendly, the food is excellent and there is a wide variety of drinks on offer. The owner, 'Rocket', is a great host and delights in magic tricks, performed at the table, if you are lucky. If you don't manage a visit here you are missing a treat. When next in Densole we will definitely be back for more.

We went here on Friday the 14th as we were staying in the caravan part just down the road. The staff were so welcoming and friendly. We had a drink at the bar and it was a really lovely old quaint bar. We sat down and our order was taken and the food came out. It was lovely. My husband had gammon egg and chips it was huge but presented really well. I had chicken curry rice and popadom. The curry was fantastic. It was flavoured to my taste. I said I’d like it with a bit of a kick but not blow your head off. It came out exactly like that. Perfect. It was presented lovely. Food was so reasonably priced. A really lovely friendly well staffed pub. If I’m this way again I’d visit here as it’s a must.

Visited this pub while staying over the road at the caravan site -which makes it very handy. The place is dog friendly and the staff were helpful and polite. We both had the liver bacon and onion and it was lovely. Food is in big portions but I did hear them.offer to a smaller portion for an elderly couple so may be worth asking. However I couldn't eat all my liver but they boxed it up for.dog - can't complain. The pub itself is rustic - it could do with a quick dust but on the whole I would go back and would recommend. Also (if it's your thing) they have a menu for dogs!!!

Disappointed burnt food, chicken like coal. Supposed to have been honey & mustard. Staff asked if our meals were okay when I explained it was burnt his response was well your eating it. My opinion was he didn’t really care if I enjoyed the meal or not.

This is our third visit to this pub and previously the food was fine pub grub! Tonight were were served two burnt pies. I said “the pie is burnt”- he walked off! The lovely waitress then came back and asked if our meals were ok? I said “no the pie is burnt”? Oh sorry... and she walked off. When presented with the bill we got an apology for the burnt pies and asked to pay the full price bill. When asking if the food is ok please train your staff to do something about it when somebody says”no” Being typical Brit’s we paid up and walked off chunttering about what a joke it was to see the reaction when we said “ the pie is burnt” any one can see when a pie is burnt, it is black on top- why serve it in the first place? Or perhaps you don’t care... you are taking for granted the volume of customers you get from the nearby Motorhome and Caravan club site.
