A range of beers to satisfy any expert. Marvellous atmosphere of an unspoilt fifteenth century interior, the beer served through a hatch. National pub of the year twice. Cheerful service and a garden facing west so perfect for afternoon and early evening. Roasted Nuts from Rebellion Beer Co recommended - strong and flavoursome. An experience worth a special visit.

Such a great characterful pub within a pretty village. We came upon this pub by chance on a long journey and wished we could have stayed longer. It was full of locals and looked cosy and welcoming inside. As it was a sunny day we sat outside and enjoyed the views of the village. We will put it on our list for another visit when travelling across country and shall look forward to our next trip to The Bell.

Took a long-standing friend out for a break who lives in a care home with various challenges but our welcome was beyond reproach and the vast array of rolls and sandwiches puts many hostelries to shame. Most enjoyable and total recommendation to anyone fancying a change - great atmosphere and everything a village pub should be.

This place is a real Gem. A classic traditional English pub, really chocolate boxy. Serves great beers, ales and hearty rustic rolls for an extremely fair price. You won't go home hungry. Its Dog friendly, muddy walker friendly and has contactless payments. It was quite busy, and that was on a Thursday at 1 o'clock so what does that tell you?

All I can ever find on the menu is a sandwich. Not exactly the greatest variety of food available. If you like sandwiches, this is a good place to go. If sandwiches are only one among many of the kinds of food that you tend to ingest on a daily basis, you might want to try and find an alternative venue. I really can’t criticise the sandwiches. The fillings are nice, so is the bread. The ambience is pleasant. Definitely a country pub. But as far as I can tell, and I have looked quite hard, they only sell sandwiches. Maybe there are some days when you can get a salad, but from where I’m sitting, it really is only about the sandwiches.

We knew in advance about the rather limited food choice, but gave our ramble leader our choices and he phoned them through. When we arrived, we were made welcome and shown our table: near the window with a nice view of that part of the village. The food soon arrived, courtesy of a helpful and pleasant waitress. All the rolls were properly wrapped, and the waitress knew the filling for each one. There were sliced onions and tomatoes, as well as plenty of sauces, too. My roll (tongue) was delicious and more filling than I expected. This is a lovely pub in its village setting and traditional interior. Not local but would gladly revisit if in the area.

It is a wonderful place. Welcoming, knowledgeable and helpful staff. Great selection of well kept beers. The only food on offer is a good selection of warm filled rolls and that’s exactly the right thing for this place. It is a convivial place to go for a drink and is not a restaurant. It is how pubs used to be and reminds me how much I miss that sort of place. Long may it prosper.

I first went to the Bell in the 1990s when I lived in London and always remembered this wonderful old pub it but could never recall the name or where it was! With the advent of Google maps I retraced our steps and rediscovered this pub. We returned after a 2 year hiatus and it’s thankfully still the same! The same hot rolls with butter beautiful roasted ham, cheddar, prawns served with fresh onion and tomatoes. All washed down with lovely local ales and beers. They used to only take cash but do take cards now. If you want a posh gastropub go to the Wellington Arms in Baughaust if you want a proper old school pub with a gentleman landlord and a nice laid back atmosphere then this is perfect. Never change! Have a lovely walk around the ridgeway first.

Rating The Bell as 3/5 feels harsh because it is a wonderfully distinctive pub that was frozen in time at some point! The staff know the locals by name and what they’re having - it’s really lovely to see! If real ale is your thing, then this is definitely a place for you and would definitely get 5/5. We’ve given 3/5 as we happened to be in the area and we’re looking for a nice spot for a bite to eat. Some of the photos shown on this site show amazing ploughman’s lunches, but sadly these are no longer served. There is now only a very small selection of rolls, although these did look tasty enough. A lovely local pub, working hard to keep itself that way.

When COVID restrictions meant customers were not allowed to sit inside pubs, The Bell was open 12-7pm. These opening hours are still shown on the door, but on my recent visits it has closed at 8pm. Even so this means that both locals and in particular the many who used to travel from further afield to enjoy an evening in the pub can no longer do so. How busy the pub used to be in the evenings pre COVID seems to have been forgotten. There may be good reason for what appears to be a reduced family involvement in the running of the pub, but frustration among customers with the new hours is growing and alarm bells should be ringing. This "new normal" represents a sad chapter in the illustrious history of The Bell, but hopefully not a final one.

This place is a real one-off, a pub so unchanged and so full of character it could have sprung straight from the pages of a Thomas Hardy novel. Where else do you come across a tap room furnished with trestle tables, and benches to sit on? But the Bell's not only about atmosphere. The lunch time menu, though limited, is superb. I warmly recommend the broccoli soup served with warm rolls, both so appetising on a cold November day. May the Bell flourish - and never change.

Was walking through the country and found this wonderful pub. Time has stood still here. It could have been 1921 or 1821. Real ale of the finest quality was served along with two fantastic rolls. Its a pub. Its not part of a chain of restaurants where the food is mass-produced and arrives on a lorry. Nor is it an over-priced gastro-pub. Its a pub. Its for conversation, good beer and simple food - and in my case, its for morris dancing and playing music afterwards. It's a pub. It's what the so-called "hospitality industry" should be aiming for.

We met up with some friends which they had suggested as I'd never been here. We were going for a walk then eating there so we arrived at about 10.30 before the pub had opened and seeing someone tidying up outside I checked it was ok to park there, and not only was it ok but he asked if my wife wanted to use the pub toilet first because he would show her through! Then while we were getting ready someone else came over and told us about the menu and that the pub had been owned through five generations. When we got back the pub was so busy we sat out in the garden and were provided with some plastic to sit on as the seats were damp, and then when a shower came over someone rushed out to put umbrellas up for us!The food was light food only rather than a full meal but very good value and a very good range of beers. Great atmosphere of course, and the feeling that this was a true 'pub', serving the village and guests in a way I thought had died out. I can't recommend it enough.

We had heard of this pub which is located just off the Ridgeway Path, so we hiked up one day from Goring. It was definitely worth the hike! Hugh, the owner (its been in his family for over 250 years) is a friendly, outgoing, cheerful man who goes out of his way to make you just what you want to drink and is willing to chat about his pub, his family and his community. You can see his pride shining from him and it is definitely justified. He made the best Pimm's we had on our two week trip to England and the food was tasty--full baps which held us over till dinnertime. Hugh recommended we hike on up to the church of the 'giants' which we did and are glad we were able to see it. It was very interesting! When we returned to the pub to ring for a taxi, there was none available, so the waitress offered to drop us off in Goring at our B&B; as she was leaving about then. What service! And the best part was Hugh's mum came out to meet us, shake my hand and thank us for being (1) Americans and (2) for the Americans having come over to England to help out during WWII. She told us stories of being a little girl during the war and how America had an airfield quite close to the pub. The aviators would come to the pub and visit with her, sharing their chocolate from home with her and her sister. Then they would pray in the garden before leaving on a raid. What a lovely memory to share with us and what a lovely woman she was. I wish I could remembered her name.

Great Beer and excellent basic food, warm rolls rammed with filling and the ploughman's is what a ploughman's USED to be!...My only gripe is something that in my opinion is becoming far to common in pubs for my liking... "Dog Friendly"... I really don't want a dog shaking itself with flob and god knows what flying all over me whilst eating!!.. and guess what, no, I don't think your dog is cute!!. and i don't want him/her coming up sniffing me wrapping its lead around my legs whilst trying to get a drink!!... have a dog friendly pub if you must, but confine them to the garden, not the bar and certainly not the food area!.. apart from that what a great place!

Most of the real ales are brewed locally and varied in flavour and type, some being brewed within a few miles. The rolls, whilst smaller than they used to be, are some of the best you'll ever taste.

We are regulars here - when the sun is out on the weekend we head to The Bell’s garden for warm, crusty cheese rolls and drinks.

This has to be one of our first stops when visiting the UK - The Bell Inn, if you want the taste of real beer then add this pub to your tour guide. When I lived in the UK back in the 60's my drink of choice was always a "Light and Bitter" and this one of the few places where the bar keep does not say "a what!" he/she just delivers a great pint of real beer with a light ale bottle.

Don’t know what’s the fuss about this place. Went for lunch and food was mediocre. Service wasn’t great as the staff look tired and bored. Prices were good but there are better options with better food and service.

Lunches are good and functional, rather than flash. The beers are all well kept and everything is maintained to ensure you get it in the best condition possible. For me, its a 30 minute drive at pace, but I never turn down a chance to go there. The ambiance is also quite special.

This is a great little pub in the middle of the country-side with a nice garden bar to enjoy their great food. We arrived not realising they didn't take cards of any description - actually they only accept cash or cheques - lucky the food and drinks were so cheap we were able to have a meal and drink from the spare change in the car. The portions are huge and the food is fresh and simple. Love this place

I visited this wonderful, unchanged pub for a "walker's lunch" last week and found it delightfully unchanged since my last visit three years ago - and indeed my first visit in 1977. In fact this place has remained unchanged for 300 years and is an absolute delight. No muzac, just a small selection of well-kept beer and cheese rolls. Do go.

While my husband's ploughman's was lovely I was very disappointed with my smoked salmon roll .I did expect a nice large crusty fresh roll to be honest but it was small and round roll no different to what u buy in a supermarket .

Great pub great staff. Traditional family ran pub, like pubs used to be. Rolls and soup are on the menu and must be sampled, especially the salt beef.

The Bell has maintained its rustic ambience for many years and is a gem if you want a good pint, well cared for, and excellent bar food with lots of choice. Their filled rolls are to die for - and all in an ambience which goes back over 50 years - even momentos of the Home Guard and local RAF bases during WW2. Wonderful place, wonderful staff - can't say more!

Every time my brother-in-law and wife come for a short stay with us, his priority is a "must visit" to this quaint country pub. We have been visitors to this pub for well over 30 years - very little has changed from being CAMRA pub of the year many years ago, plus sundry other accolades. It is a jewel in the crown of the areas locals. Sitting in the garden this lunchtime under the ancient apple tree in the shade was so restful and relaxing, with a pint of mild and a crab roll and a salt beef roll was simply splendid.

Always enjoy a visit to The Bell and often walk in the area afterwards . The Stilton rolls are exceptional, and the soup in the winter.Plan a walk afterwards

The service is good and the food well presented. They don't provide cooked meals but what they do provide is very enjoyable.

Set in Beautidul countryside. We walked to the pub with our dog. Ate fresh bread door step sandwiches washed down with local ale and cider which set us up for the walk ahead. The day was a very memorable one.

This is one of my all time favourite pubs, there aren't that many of them left; great local beers, simple filling food and a warm welcome to all. There are no TV's, jukeboxes or gambling machines, you actually have to talk to each other and what's more is that you can even hear what they have to say. Simply great.

What can I say that hasn’t been said before, faultless ale, service and food in this idyllic country pub. A warm Saturday and the garden is thronged with guests having a great time. Give this pub a try!

Really loved this place , sat in the garden on a sunny day and ordered drinks and sausage baghettes. Couldn't see that they did any cooked food other than that , but was perfect for an relaxed afternoon . Everyone seemed cheery here and that comes off from the friendly staff. Beware, it's cash only as this pub has "old ways" and it only adds to the charm , just make sure u nip to a cash point before coming x

I've just moved back to the area having grown up in nearby Nettlebed, so thought as i had a some spare work-free days i'd check out some local pubs...this is my current favourite! Lovely locally produced ales, amazing low-ceiling interior filled with old-world posters and antiques, great sun-kissed dog friendly garden and really simple rolls/ploughmans/soup menu. I'll be back!

The perfect pub, a choice of fine real ales, a beautiful historic interior, a wonderful example of how to protect such national treasures. No juke box, no fruit machines, no piped music, no televisions, no mobile phones, no loud self-important people, no-body constantly checking their "facebook likes", just great beer and conversation. Absolute bliss.

Another visit to this wonderful, traditional pub. Warm and welcoming this hostelry serves some of the finest ale you can acquire; I have never had a bad pint. The rolls here are delicious, the corned beef and onion is thoroughly recommended but there are plenty of options available. If you fancy soup this is made on site and again is recommended without hesitation. If you are in the area give it a try and you will not be disappointed.

A Well cooked meal, hot and well presented. The Ibex is situated in Chaddleworth, a pretty village in West Berkshire, about 7 miles North of Newbury. A good chef.

Lovely cooked breakfast, great that you can select exactly which items you want as I personally hate beans and hash browns on a breakfast, so could easily avoid those and have extra mushrooms and tomatoes! Service was efficient, the breakfast was freshly cooked to order. It wasn’t overly greasy and was piping hot. Very much enjoyed. Giving 4 stars only because the cutlery is absolutely terrible to use! Knife blunt and uncomfortable to hold (jabs into hands), and as the bacon was slightly overdone (I don’t mind, I prefer it this way that the other) the knife was useless for cutting through it which was a tad annoying. This said, if passing through Lambourn again would absolutely return. Many thanks.

The little skewers were nice. The lemon sole and ravioli special were satisfyinf and tasty dishes, but the mackeral was very ordinary and the crab souufle was disappointingly small. The menu offers mackeral with aubergines, but the amount of aubergines was derisory. The crab accompaniment of leeks was a thimblefull, and one should request a magnifying glass to find the tomatoes with the potatoes. The worst was the cider - we ordered half pints and got tiny portions in wine glasses. My guest is a member of the gourmet Food Writers' Guild and even she was surprised by the meanness. The service was OK, but not worth the fixed charge of 12.5%.
