The Bear in Windsor and Maidenhead

I come to maidenhead once a year to get my car serviced at a specialist. I always come to the Bear for a breakfast, had the large. So good I was compelled to write this review. Really well cooked perfect running yolks, really tasty. Today is 26.04.2024 and the chef deserves the recognition, i did ask the server to pass on my compliments. All the staff were friendly. Free refils on the teas and coffee are a good shout. Thanks

This weatherspoons is a favourite of mine. Situated in the town centre it is a great venue for breakfast or lunch. We find the breakfast to be the best in the area and always cooked to perfection. Staff and friendly and welcoming and many local people meet here.

Lovely pub with great staff and good customers but the younger generation are allowed to do what they like especially blocking fire exits which could have the pub shut down. I will go elsewhere.

🐻🍻🥘 The Bear in Maidenhead High Street has been here forever and is probably the most famous landmark in the entire town other than the townhall itself! Weatherspoons do this stunning establishment perfectly with a great selection of beers ales stouts and lagers. There's an excellent food menu, and it's just one of those places that takes you back in time (for me to my 20s when it was a hot spot for the social circuit!). The staff are friendly and welcoming. Just drop in and enjoy!

Top spec lunch food was tasty and well cooked. Excellent service I couldn't fault the place. A side issue comment they're selling Bud Light at £2.48 a pint I guess nowadays there's not many takers.

How disappointing that after previously telling them not to block fire exits as it is against fire regulations, a group of Asian gentlemen were allowed to do so. I'm a regular and need this pub to stay open.

We noticed some bad recent reviews and decided to see for ourselves. We weren't disapppinted. The Bear has a pleasant atmosphere with friendly staff. Warm and cosy on a very chilly day., especially upstairs. As usual Wetherspoons respect the history of the building and its surroundings, an important feature of their business model which distinguishes them from many other chains. Food very good - lovely tender steaks.

Absolutely appalling Asked 5 f***ing for our deserts to come out. I ordered extra custard, first , they brought my desert still in the wrapper, second I asked twice for spoons , third I asked for a plate , then twice I requested the extra custard I ordered The manager came , didn't resolve f**k all other than give a refund and he states the extra custard was on the other desert Don't visit this dive unless you have to AVOID AVOID AVOID AVOID

We visited this Wetherspoons whilst in the area and thought it was not like others we had visited. Half the beer was not available, the food was cold and what we ordered half of it was not received until we asked where it was. The men’s toilet was disgusting with toilet paper blocking two of the urinals . Yes it is a weatherspoons but not to their normal standards

Absolute abysmal service at bar yesterday at 2pm. Totally ignored by all three staff members who were not under any pressure at all. I did not stay after intending to have lunch. They should visit the King & Castle at Windsor or even the Falcon at High Wycombe to experience good customer service.

Worst customer service I have ever had. My food was cold and undercooked chicken. Had to ask for a manager 3 times before a very uninterested manager in a green dress made the situation worse as I had to come to the bar to even ask if I was even refunded. Then did not even so much as sorry. It was busy and I respect that but how can any manager except this?!? What a terrible example of how to manage a business. It's a spoons and we all don't expect great service but this is really bad and I will be getting EHO evolved to protect the other customers who visit. So very disappointed

ANTS EVERYWHERE!!! Crawled into my friends chips one even was in the sauce. Made everyone felt uncomfortable as they were everywhere. Staff are also rude and don’t seem to ever want to be there. Makes everything feel awkward

Sat outside with my wife and dog in a large seating area had an unbelievable cheap pint and whisky and coke then told by a young staff member no dogs allowed on premises told there's a sign on the door or it's on the Wed site went to have a look at door NO SIGN ABOUT DOGS went in called the manager out he came with the chap who said no dogs asked to show me the sign he patted the young lad on the back and said I leave this one to you and shot of been on the Web site no mention off dogs not allowed don't know if weatherspoons own the pavement outside the pub but I doubt it so take your dog there and have a row with them

Food arrived very promptly and was hot, but chip portion size very small ! Toilets not the cleanest either but was a busy sunny bank holiday & staff friendly

This pub is usually great but let down when the younger generation can flood the pub. Vaping and ineffectual bouncers. Get a grip or we'll have no Wetherspoons in Maidenhead

Pub is fine but they have not done anything about the inane Polish and Welsh blokes that I mentioned before. Have now lost a customer forever.

I've reported this to Wetherspoons HQ before these two options on the machine near the ladies toilets are a waste of time. Stick to plain white coffee it is just about hot enough

The building is an old coaching inn and has some character to it. We ordered dinner here and it flew out the kitchen - perhaps a bit too fast. An ok meal but filling especially when washed down with a pint of golden ale.

Very poor that no dogs are allowed in the outside area - which appears to just be the pavement. Accept if the policy means not a beer garden. However this feels more like a public space to the front. I have never seen a member...

Really nice food with really nice staff! Went with my boyfriend for breakfast, which had finished 4 minutes after we got there so we couldn’t get a breakfast (since they only serve till 11:30) :/ Had to order scampi instead, however it was very nice. Order on the app which is fine yet could be inconvenient for some (older people) However food came out quickly and was delicious and staff was lovely!!

In general this place is good but when they turn on a regular imagine what they would do to passing trade. They need some customer retraining and learn to live in the real world.

Went for lunch on a busy Thursday lunchtime. No one on the door taking details so we just sat down. Waiter who took our order and brought the food not wearing a mask. On a plus note the food was good.

Just had the most awful experience at The Bear in Maidenhead this evening. My daughter drove and we parked on the street, opposite, a little way down from the pub around 7pm. As the car in front had parked badly, it left us with a much smaller space to park in, otherwise we’d encroach into the vacant disabled bay behind us. Having got out to guide her as close as possible to the car in front, I was suddenly confronted by an angry man telling me that we had just hit the car in front. I told him we had not. He then told me that we couldn’t park it there as we hadn’t left enough space between us and the car in front. I pointed out that the car in front had about four foot of space between the front of it and the next car because it was so badly parked. I asked him if it was his and, if it was, could he park it in the marked bay. He became abusive and I told him that if it wasn’t his, and as we had not hit it, perhaps he should go back to whatever it was he was doing before he started wrongly accusing my daughter. When we got to the front door of The Bear, there he was, standing in front of us blocking our way, as the duty doorman for the pub. I politely asked if he’d like my details for the track and trace. He immediately told us there were no tables. I said, as there was no booking system, that we’d wait. He told me again, more aggressively this time, that there were no tables and we’d have to come back tomorrow. I asked if this was to do with the confrontation we’d just had over the parking and asked to speak to the manager. He told me I was not speaking to the manger and that we were to leave. I refused (there was now a queue behind us).He went back just inside the door and spoke to a female member of staff at length, before they then both came back out and told us that there weren’t any tables. I said that, as it was very early, we’d wait and suggested to her that this was perhaps more about the bouncer aggressively, and wrongly, accusing my daughter of hitting a car further down the street. I asked if she was the manager. She refused to say and they both went back inside. Another member of staff arrived and asked if we had registered for the track and trace; we said we hadn’t as we’d been told there were no tables. He got on his radio and asked if there was a table free. He then said it wouldn’t be too long. My daughter registered and told him about the incident with the bouncer. He then disappeared back inside and then reappeared with the bouncer, who aggressively told my daughter to back away from the door. We did. He then told us more firmly to back away again. I said we had done as he’d asked and my daughter politely pointed out that we were well inside the box marked on the floor. At this point, the guy that told us it wouldn’t be too long to get a table, then said that I’d raised my voice and we wouldn’t be getting in. I said I had not and asked to speak to the manager - he said he was the manager (James) and we were to leave and not come back. So, we left, with my daughter in tears at not only being refused entry, which was hugely embarrassing for her, but also at having wrongly been accused by some thuggish bouncer of hitting another car some way away from the pub. Why he’d left his post to confront us on a public road a distance away from the pub is baffling. As a long-serving member of the armed forces, I have never been treated in such an appalling manner. We clearly wont be going back.

Absolutely awful service. I was treated like a criminal for forgetting my ID. The girl with the blonde hair and heart tattoo on her face didn’t bother to ID us but took all our money with a dirty look on her face. Extremely rude service , wasn’t any better from the manager ‘ Matt ‘ . even Made me feel completely embarrassed around all the other customers, even after providing my ID abit later on. After asking for a refund for paying on card , they tried to bring me back coins and pennies as a refund. Poor service

Afternoon drinks outside at the front of the pub really pleasant to sit in the sun people watching. Good Covid measures in place. Would return.

went for a meal with my wife and children, starters and main came out together, when i said i wanted the main meals after our starters i was told that they would come out cold if i sent them back to the kitchen.Spoke to manager who had terrible attitude and basically told me if i dont like it then tough, thats how it is.

Had a great lunch here, ordered on the app so didn't even have to leave the table to order, food came out quickly and was very tasty. Mixed grill recommended

we met up and thout we would have a meal we ordered and in only a few momments it arrived all cold and awfull we often eat at weatherspoons dont expect the ritz but it was bad, but due to having to get back to the carpark and the time factor we did not make an issue we have eaten here lots of times before get a grip this is not on

Called in for breakfast, while my car was being serviced nearby. The restaurant was clean and tidy.There were a number of diners enjoying the breakfast. Ordering was straight forward and the price reasonable. Breakfast arrived quickly, was hot and very tasty. I elected for the refillable coffee which was very good. Certainly, no grounds for complaint.

I haven't been here for a couple of years mainly because I had to wait ages for a drink on a couple of occasions. But I had half an hour to kill in Maidenhead so I thought I'd give it another try. Firstly I love the decor and the range of drinks. I wasn't eating but the food looked good. There seemed to be plenty of staff dashing around but only 2 behind the bar with lots of people waiting to get served. The situation wasn't helped by a man with a large food order asking about every menu on the item tying up 1 server for 10 minutes. I know it was 10 minutes because I timed the wait I had to get served and I was next in line. Several people walked off after waiting that long but as it was warm and I was in no hurry I waited. The place was humming on a Tuesday evening so it must be doing very well BUT why aren't there more bar staff? I wont be dashing back .

Sat outside in the October sunshine and ordered a steak. Ive lost count of the times I have sent an undercooked steak back in other eateries but today WOW!! Perfectly cooked, piping hot, served with a smile. I have 3 sons who are chefs (I taught them everything they know haha) so I know my food. This was outstanding. My companion had the gammon and was just as impressed. We will be back. Well done to the team at the Bear from two extremely happy customers.

I see someone complained about Strongbow not being served in a Strongbow glass.Back in the day you had only two choices, straights or tankards.The only beer that I know of that is better poured in a special glass is Guiness to avoid excess head.Pity the poor bar staff who now have a whole range of branded glasses to match the drink.

The food here is very good. The place also is very interest with an atmosphere and plenty of seating.

I went to The Bear in Maidenhead, on 1st of September, at around 10:40 am, with my wife, to have some nice Sunday breakfast. When I went to the bar to place the order, I asked the person there (named John and who is one of the managers) to not add ice to my glass of juice. He threw the ice very rudely back to the bucket and started mumbling some f words under his breath. I called a manager and some other guy came in and apologised on John’s behalf stating he thinks it’s a silly thing to swear at and refused to provide John employee ID, for better identification. While i sat at the table with my wife, John kept looking in our direction, clearly being bothered by my presence. I think this should be looked into, as it just put me off coming to this family pub. And the cherry at the top is that the staff forgot to bring me the eggs which came with my breakfast and i had to ask 2 girls to bring them to me....

Like any weather spoon pubs food is value for money, drinks are value for money but no music. So you go there to have a good conversation with friends or family. The staff extremely friendly and helpful the pub is child friendly and the place has good character.

Good pub food for a quick night out and drinks at a reasonable price also. Gets very busy at weekends.

Have been coming to The Bear for years.

Came here after a meal. Always busy, always plenty of beer, always cheap (Wetherspoons). The Bear is a great social pub, check the Real Ale tasting notes before you go to make each visit a beer festival!!

Visit Saturday 22nd June evening, as per Wetherspoons drinks were cheap as a pint of strongbow and a pink gin & lemonade single for about £7. Quick to get served but unfortunately for both rounds the service wasn’t great as the bar girl out the strongbow in an ordinary pint glass which ruins the pint. They did this both times, if normal strongbow glasses were not available then they should get some more in or clean them. Pub was not busy. Furniture needs updating as out dated now. Will return due to the cheap drinks but suggest better service and better trained staff.

Another great local weatherspoons - busy and the usual reliable standard. App ordering is a genius idea.

Visited this place to have food absolutely disgusted with the language used by the doorman a young couple before us was spoken to discusting not allowed in fir food because the young man didant look like his photo enough that's fair enough but the language and names the doorman was using DISCUSTING won't be going there again

If you are a gin drinker or you are new to gin, this is the best place in Maidenhead.

Please can you explain why on a Sunday,when the weather is good and you are sitting outside in the No smoking section, eating your food ,when the scooter people exit they have to rev their scooters FOR FIVE MINUTES,Choking us all with their petrol fumes.?Can they not just start their Scooters and leave ?Whats the point of having a non smoking section when you allow this to happen everyweek?The food and service was excellent but will avoid the Bear On Sundays as I am told by the regulars this happens every Sunday...!

Last Thursday we visited the Bear and were happy with our choice. Good food, great offer of drinks, friendly staff. We will come back for sure.

Served a flat pint of beer by a barmaid who had had either a personality bypass or a lobotomy. Moved on quickly

Cheap drinks served fairly quickly, cocktails not bad, staff were friendly and it had plenty of seaats to sit down

Went today for breakfast. My poached eggs and toad was stone cold, the eggs were like rubber and bacon had solidified fat all over it. one meal never arrived- we waited half hour after everyone else’s meal arrived and it never came and my daughters bread was dumped in her beans so when it came it was very soggy. We complained and the waiter asked if I wanted him to take my eggs and ‘reheat it’ instead of offering a fresh meal. I declined and he said to go to the bar to ask for refund. The manger was very rude and kept interpreting me while I was telling him why we are being refunded and then walked away while I was talking. He then shouted across the bar to go to the till he was at so he can refund us. We always visit the bear and have never had problems as bad as this and after speaking to others, it seems that many people are saying that the place has gone down hill. Such a shame as my daughter is autistic so likes to eat simple food like nuggets and chips and she trusts the bear and like it there.

Only my second visit but I enjoyed the breakfast so much I tried the same while waiting for my car to be serviced. Had the large breakfast with the black pudding. I also had the 'refillable' coffee. The server was friendly and cheerful. Breakfast arrived promptly, there was enough for the healthiest of appetites! I really enjoyed my breakfast, but I'm not sure that my waist line will allow too many visits!

Stopped in for a drink - had always been put off by some of the people drinking and smoking outside - but pleasantly surprised when we went inside.

Took a break from the madness of Christmas shopping at the Bear, it was full down stairs, but we found a table upstairs. Ordered burgers and soft drinks at the bar. 10 minutes later our order was delivered piping hot, load of chips. The staff were friendly and helpful, the burgers were tasty, and the price was great

Food delivered very quick , Bar very noisy / busy . Sadly happy atmosphere destroyed by waitress Wendy snapping back as I requested a glass for soft drink. Said that she had asked me already if I wanted a glass. My hearing in noisy room is not too clever due to health probs. She Seemed rather miserable as some ladies on next table to us were also commenting to themselves. Food hot and other staff fabulous. Not the first time she had been “ snappy”!

I come here often. But was left very disappointed after last vist. Smaller portion than usual...food cold....was given a starter instead of a main meal. Come on guys get back on form

Although it is always busy, you don’t have to wait too long. Friendly and helpful staff. Have been for breakfast, lunch and dinners and never had a problem. Only disappointment is that they don’t do Sunday lunch and not enough vegetables

Having been here on many occasions and have found it a very enjoyable experience, but today it was marred by what I can only describe as the angriest bar woman I have ever encountered, rude, brash and really did not know how to talk to people no manners at all, I appreciate that it was busy but really her attitude and manners were not conducive to a Merry Christmas vibe, she was a lady of mature years ( I am not being judgemental) and feel she should be showing an example to her younger colleagues, the food was good and we had a good meal

Sixteen of us came here for the second year running for our Christmas party. We all enjoyed the food. The menu was fairly extensive, something for everyone. A very good selection of beers, wines and spirits. The staff were friendly and helpful, sorting out the only mix-up, I'd ordered a baked potato with my steak, but got chips instead, immediately. No fuss. All our meals came together, no waiting.

Despite ordering first, everyone else had finished eating their meals when it dawned on me that I wasn't going to be getting my food at all. The drink arrived immediately, so the order went through okay.

Called in for breakfast, for the first time. Had the large breakfast with black pudding, which was extra which I didn't mind as it is not often included 'down south'. Had coffee, which I refilled with no extra charge a couple of times. Breakfast arrived promptly - it was superb and more than enough for the heartiest of appetites. Everything was cooked to perfection. The toast was warm and there was sufficient butter. All at a very reasonable price. If my waist line could cope I would call more often.

Have ordered toast and marmalade and nearly every time it's served cold. Have also ordered bacon/sausage and they are always served unbuttered with no side butter on the plate. even when asked for them to be buttered when ordered

Waited 30mins for food pulled chicken burger and cottage pie. Cottage pie came out STONE COLD was returned bar staff said it would be reheated. Waited 15mins cottage pie came out LUKE WARM. My SON had finished his meal as I told him to go ahead and eat his. So we got a refund on my meal of a cottage pie. Went home with an empty stomach. Bitterly disappointed yet again. Between your Windsorla Pub and this one on numerous times we have been disappointed. I think your chefs need to be retrained and held account. Our meals at the Windsorla last night was a beef burger and a chicken breast burger both came out burnt which even the waiter agreed. They were replaced and we're OK. It seems lately the food is becoming sub standard and we have seen time and time again food being returned by other members of the public. I would suggest that to gain a reputation of being good food serving pubs that you act on not only my complaint but that of others as per some of the reviews I have read Perhaps get someone out to go under cover and see for yourselves and source the problems Thank you.

Long wait at the bar, only two staff on despite long queue whilst the other staff, including manager, decorated the place for Halloween. No attempt to serve the customers or help the bar staff, ridiculous. Unfortunately poor service appears to be the norm here as every time I have visited there’s always a long wait. The waiters bringing the food did their best but are let down by lack of leadership and mangement.

If you want cheap food and cheap beer the Bear will not disappoint. Always busy this large Wetherspoon will serve you breakfast, lunch and dinner. You can have a beer or a coffee from the Wetherspoon menu. Big outside seating area at the front is usually occupied so you can sup a drink and watch Maidenhead life.

Always eat here, really busy Saturday evening we had great meals but puzzled by no tables had Ketchup.

I do like a Wetherspoons and grabbing a table ordering from the app. On a Sunday very surprised to see the pub so busy at 10am. First time at this branch of Wetherspoons.

Arrive at 5pm for an early dinner and was met with 20 empty tables all laden with dirty glasses and plates with masses of left over food ... terrible eating environment

Place dirty toilets disgusting not cleaned on checking no toilet rolls puddle water in cubicle. No soap. Bar staff very miserable, serverd out of order, drinks not filled to right measure, staff do n ot know where table settings are and wandering around looking for customer, food warm not hot, too dark in there. Decor old fashioned and looks grubby. tables not cleared or wiped very sticky. App orders take preference to other customers wating at the ba.r bBar staff serve the App customers at their tables even for 1 pint not with a meal. Centre of bar flooring is raised and very dangerous especially elderly hazzard only a sign saying wet floor ? this has been there for at least 9 months. When it is raining heavy buckets are put out in walk way to catch the leaks another Hazzard. Children allowed in all n ight just born toddlers screaming at late hour. They used to have to be allowed in if parents are eating and had to leave by 7.30pm but not now.

Thought we would give what is our local Wetherspoon's another chance. Only stayed for 2 pints. Badly served asked for top up and still short measure. I don't like proper Abbotts. What was served to up tonight was awful. No flavour or strength and pricey. Would go so far as to say if it was not a poor brew from Greene King, it had been thinned down. Moon and Spoon Slough and Windlesora Windsor has our custom for the foreseeable future. Both have a good selection of well kept beers, served well and not too pricey.

Don't go there manager with really bad addittude food all ways comes out wrong one person serving drinks when there is a que of 15 + avoid big time when managed by SEZ f-ucking useless

Wow we really enjoyed our lunch with a bottle of wine . Scampi and chips cooked to perfection . Attentative staff ,our food was served in a vibrant friendly atmosphere . Set us up for the party the of the evening . Amazing value food could not ask for more.

The bear is an old building, with a personality. Staff are friendly, food is acceptable, prices are more than reasonable. Great meeting place for relaxing and eating.

We have eaten at the Bear on several occasions some good some not so good. Today was the worst.My husband ordered the breakfast and I had porridge, and toast and preserve. The breakfasts arrived, the first problem was the cutlery was dirty, and my husband asked for another knife, My porridge was cold served in a chipped bowl,not one chip but three chips and my husbands breakfast was luke warm, to top it, the toast and butter didnt have a knife. I understand that places get busy and short of staff. but why wasnt the bowl thrown out long before my breakfast was served in it.

Had a BBQ burger, extra five bean chilli and garlic bread too. I also tried a Russian lager called Baltika and really enjoyed it. Strong Wi-Fi and nice atmosphere. Nothing to fault.

Great Full English, Great selection of sides, tasty coffee and free refills, friendly staff, give it a try.Too early but beer at £2.56 a pint cracking value, give it a try.

nice decore with seating in and outside. the football was on the same time we ate dinner so was very busy, we ordereded food, came out quickly to our table, staff seemed abit rushed but polite. food was as expected and good value for the area.

Good friendly staff, The SOP for Weatherspoons is consistent across the board. I did find the interior a bit dark and could do with a brighter interior decoration but that is personal choice. I have two breakfasts and one evening meal all OK and value for money when i stayed in maidenhead for the weekend

Called in on the off chance of a good meal and drink and was surprised at the quality of the food and beers available at cheap prices. Large fish & chips which the batter was crispy at £7.95 and quality burger and chips, the meat was excellent, £5.95. both including a drink!! Service was really good too.
