Recently had Sunday Lunch here at The Angel. The Sunday Roast was overall good. The chicken & vegetables were very tasty, but roasties were slightly overdone & the jus was quite watery with no real depth of flavour. & we enjoyed the treacle sponge & chocolate dessert but found them on the extremely small side. The service could 100% been better. They only had 2 waiters doing the full restaurant. One seemed to be doing drinks & setting tables & the other purely for food. This just didn’t work, they were not attentive or efficient with orders, clearing plates & keeping on top of drinks etc. Several tables including ourselves waited 20+ mins to have plates cleared. Their excuse kept being ‘what do you expect we’re busy’ when it was brought to their attention by customers. I feel 2 staff could definitely work that number of tables, if they were working their damn hardest. Within the first hour of being there, we had only had one starter & no mains yet which was pretty slow. When you only have your table for 1 hour & 45 mins, this isn’t good enough. We only had 45 mins to eat mains & dessert & customers coming in wanting their tables were noticeably getting annoyed. There was a 3rd member of staff working behind the bar area, doing what im not sure but she looked as if she would have rather been in jail. Having said all of that, we are keen to return to try Ellie’s tasting menu as i dont think a Sunday roast is a true representation of a chefs talent & we will hope for better service & front of house attitude. Dining out isn’t just about the food its about the full experience.

The tasting menu was good, varied and adventurous. The waitress was a really nice and knowledgable about the food. However, service from the Maitre D/ Sommelier was sadly lacking. Once we rejected his suggestion to upsell to the most expensive champagne, he chose to ignore us and spent the evening avoiding our table. Likewise, when asking the other wine host about the flavours and character of a particular wine, their only response was to try and replace that with one “chosen by the royals for their wedding” and not offering any information about the wine we had chosen. We were forced to serve our own wine as not at all attentive to empty glasses. This sadly significantly diminished the experience for us and made us feel unwelcome. A shame, given that this purports to be a Michelin service - we felt the stance arrogant and not reflective of my experience of Michelin restaurants.

After being quite excited, by articles we had read we decided to go for Sunday Lunch. The welcome and service were very offhand and my partner got the wrong main course. Her Bream turned out to be quite acceptable, but my beef roast turned out to be average and absolutely dominated by a huge Yorkshire pudding, more likely to be seen in a roadside café rather than a fine restaurant. The beef was ok but the rest was less than ordinary. The desserts; Brulee and a sticky toffee pudding could have easily come out of a supermarkets instant dessert counter. Not a great experience and definitely not to be repeated.

Very disappointing. Poor service. Two waitresses who were really slow. The roast for the Sunday lunch was tasteless. Roast potatoes that had seen better days as had the Yorkshire pudding. Does not deserve any accolade. We were really looking forward to this and it sadly let us down Even the wine said 2016 on the menu but when it came was a 2017.

We visited the Angel for a special occasion on a Saturday and had a superb meal. Had the set/taster menu (only option on a Saturday evening) which they adjusted for dietary needs. Whilst not cheap it was worth every penny. Every dish (including the canapés which were not on the list) was excellent, for me the squid ink mussel served with they salmon was out of this world. Wine pairings were great as well, and included some unusual wines that I would not normally have tried. Waiting staff were pleasant and the sommelier was very helpful. Open kitchen gave a sense of what was happening (all very calm in there!) and the head chef was very visible.

My wife and I were visiting Dartmouth as an overnight stop off, and she booked The Angel as a birthday treat for me. I am lucky enough to have eaten in some top restaurants, and The Angel is right up there with the best of them. Fantastic tasting menu with all dishes beautifully presented. There is no need to worry about style over substance, though. The flavour combinations were all sublime. The staff were all excellent, attentive, and welcoming. I fail to see how recent negative reviews to the contrary can be remotely true based on my own experience. This was our second visit, and the same can be said of our first experience, too. There was a lovely atmosphere and buzz in the restaurant, which was full, and staff we equally attentive to all other diners. Furthermore, my wife has multiple severe food intolerances, and Ellie cooked a bespoke dish for her. I can not recommend The Angel highly enough.

We booked a party of 6 at the Angel restaurant in Dartmouth to have the tasting menu (£95 each) for a family birthday celebration. Before arriving, we were phoned and told their card machine was not working and we would need to bring cash. We were able to bring about one third of the cash needed and were confident of being able to get the remainder from one of two ATMs just round the corner. On arrival, we asked if cash was still needed to which the answer was “if possible” – suggesting it was not essential. The meal was OK, but expensive with drinks. When it was time to pay, we tried the ATMs but both were empty, so we offered to pay one third by cash and the remainder by card, immediate bank transfer, or to leave full contact details and come back the next day. The manager became aggressive and insisted immediate payment by cash was the only option. This included telling a pregnant member of our party she would be unable to leave until the matter was resolved. The refusal to accept payment by bank transfer is especially strange since it would have been perfectly possible for them to confirm receipt before we left. In the end, and against my better judgement, three of our party were effectively frog-marched to the manager’s car and driven to an out-of-town ATM after which we paid in cash (less service charge obviously). The end-result was we paid around £130 each what we agreed was our worst ever restaurant experience. There is something seriously wrong with this restaurant and we advise anyone considering it to try one of the many other excellent restaurants in Dartmouth instead

I am not the biggest fan of pork, but the set lunch pork belly was the best I have ever eaten, the celeriac that went with it was to die for! £35 for three courses was excellent value for money, needed a couple of sides to go with it too, which were both superb. Only think was the service was a tad slow, but that is being a bit picky

I had been dying to try this place since first moving to Devon, fifteen years ago, and it exceeded my expectations in every way. The staff and service were impeccable and the food was sublime. I have never eaten a starter that I can honestly say, made me emotional. The Loch Duart salmon was exquisite, drenched in an incredible butter, with roast spring onions. Main was a very traditional Sunday Roast, but cooked to a level of heaven inexplicable with words. While i plumped for the cheese and crackers, (my first taste of goat's cheese), and a delightful thyme cracker, with a punchy chutney side, while my husband opted for rhubarb and custard, a deconstructional delight 😊 All in all, I couldn't fault it. Lovely place, lovely people, ill be dreaming about that salmon tonight ❤️

I have dined at the Angel at least a dozen times under all previous chef proprietors and 3 times under the present incumbent This tasting menu last week was simply not up to scratch When you first sit down and the menu for £95 per person is presented on a folded bit of A4 paper I had a sense of something not quite right We started with some canapes which were ordinary one presented as fish and chips but in reality a poor fishcake We were then presented with the done to death mini soup with herb oil ok but not hot enough Decent bread but not wonderful Served with whipped butter with olive oil poured on it This is not a great combination you can't dip the bread you can't spread the butter pointless Brill in a citrus broth literally could have been any fish and was just ok served with herb oil again The pate de foie was again underwhelming served with a overcooked dry mini brioche just not good The halibut was over cooked but being cut so thin hard not to be probably 2oz of fish the turnip fondant was laughably undercooked for a top kitchen. Decent sauce with the recurring herb oil added again not hot enough The centrepiece was a squab pigeon breast really Liverish with a thick overpowering chocolate and hazelnut sauce just wasn't good It was served with the same wilted spinach that was under the halibut The redeeming factor was an excellent jus with some very good mash but again not hot enough Pudding was a chocolate and orange concoction that was again ordinary and served with some ice cream mine half melted my partners not being . It tasted and looked like a supermarket bought item although I acknowledged it wasn't but if this is the upshot of the the labour it may as well be I posted this review privately to The Angel but as I didn't get the courtesy of a reply which a note they do seem to reply to positive reviews I have decided to share this publicly This has been one of my favourite restaurants to eat in for many years but unfortunately this visit left me sad It felt like a kitchen going through the motions nothing I ate on a whole tasting menu made me say wow Saying wow is what you are looking for when you visit great restaurants David Kearney

Elly not only served us food, chatted about where we had eaten before and where we were going next, but was also busy at the pass given direction to her team, also, due to staff shortage, she became her own pastry chef, cooking the dessert courses herself. A busy lady with high production values in her food and her service. We selected the tasting menu and this began with warm Parmesan polenta served with a topping of spicy Tomato gel and Cherry gel. The tomato one had a bite of chilli to it, making it a perfect foil for the polenta, the cherry one provided an alternative with a sharp flavour, tickling the tongue with pleasure. We then had seeded rye bread and cultured butter. The butter was rich and tangy working really well with the dark earthiness of the rye bread. The next appetiser arrived, this was Gazpacho with peach drops and was served in an Angel Espresso cup, a novel way to serve soup. The flavours of the cold soup was just as I have had them in Spain, but the introduction of the little drops of peach moved this into a British orchard dish - what a wonderful combination and a perfect example of summer food. The first course then arrived, it was Bream with buttermilk, gooseberry dashi and borage oil served with radish and herbs. The tiny pieces of bream at the bottom of the bowl were enhanced by the delicious richness of the buttermilk, the gooseberry added a sharpness which convinced me we had come to the right place. This food is no nonsense in flavour, sharp and tongue tingling, which is just perfect for me. The second course was Milk Cured Liver (Foie) with roasted peach two ways, Sauternes jelly and chamomile. The liver had been cured in the milk for 24 hours and it had taken on a mousse like texture rather than the rougher edge that is sometimes associate with Foie, the peach was sliced on top of the liver and then a thicker segment was angled across the top of that, excellent. The Sauternes jelly worked as a seasoning and with the camomile, flowers and leaves, added a slight sweetness to the milky richness of the rest of the dish Our third course was Roasted Sea Bass with artichoke, heritage tomatoes, tomato puree on a bed of buttered greens with broad beans all in a Lemon Grass Beurre Blanc sauce. Thankfully, this dish was also served with knife, fork and spoon, as the sauce would have been enough for a meal in itself with its complex Asian flavours, but better than that the sauce was a genuine accompaniment to the fresh cooked sea bass which held together perfectly and, much to our delight, had a crispy skin. There was nothing left on either of our plates. Our main course was the Aged Fillet of Red Ruby Beef, silverskin onions, shimeji mushrooms and Horseradish buttermilk. Red Ruby is a Devonshire breed of cattle and it is clear from the flavour of this one that it did not die in vain. The gentle scattering of sea salt on top really brought out the flavour and the onions and shimeji mushrooms were both fun to see and gentle and soft to eat alongside the full flavoured beef. The main was served with Truffle potatoes and a Red Wine jus, the potatoes were very gently whipped and worked well to mop up the rest of the jus, so the plate was as clean at the end as it would have been before it had food added. A real winner of a dish The pre-dessert was Cucumber granita, cucumber balls, curd cheese and 0% gin. Cucumber is one of my favourite summer flavours, so this little taster was lovely. The granita was rich with cucumber flavour and the little cucumber balls added some crunch. The gin was also there to provide the floral flavours, rather than any alcohol hit, so the 0% worked really well The dessert was Dark Chocolate ganache, Dulce, microherbs and Cherry Sorbet again not an excessively sweet dessert, but an extremely tasty one with the sharpness of cherry being used to balance the range of flavours It was a wonderful evening, we were so glad we had made the effort to book

We ate the tasting menu which was quite good and in which some courses were changed at our request. The issue was the very varied pace of service which slowed down markedly as the evening went on. Staff were very pleasant but seemed a little...

We had the tasting menu and were blown away. Everything was exceptional and exciting. They even accommodated my dairy intolerance throughout the menu so I was able to try all the courses too. The beetroot tart was to die for as was the tomato gazpacho...

Had lovely experience at this restaurant and amazing food. I was, however, really baffled by the fact that they only serve a £95 multiple course set menu on Saturdays, as we did not expect or plan for that on our short visit to the area. Apparently there is info about it on the website, but having booked via third party app on google, we missed that info completely, and were looking forward to choosing some of our own dishes rather than agreeing to a set menu. It was quite baffling to find that out already at the restaurant and basically having no way out. Nonetheless, all dishes served were great, and we were offered a substitute to liver dish which we didn’t want to have.

We like the airiness of the large dining room. The food was well prepared and presented. We thought that the prices were slightly higher than one would expect for this type of restaurant. Worth a try if you are prepared to spend £100 a head.

We revisited The Angel last night and feel the restaurant is now even better. There has been a redecoration and new soft furnishings to deaden the noise. Soft jazz music added to the atmosphere. There was a tasting menu or an a la carte menu to choose from. I had the cured salmon and turbot with butter sauce and finally cherry souffle. All were beautifully presented and perfectly cooked. However, the most positive thing was the way they dealt with my husband's garlic allergy. We get so used to him being told what he can't have and very few items left on the menu that he can! At the Angel Ellie came to speak to us and explained all items were possible - just sometimes with a different sauce. So he had lamb as a main with an apricot sauce instead of the jus. It was beautifully cooked and the sauce went well with it. There was a great atmosphere with Ellie front of house looking after all her diners with care and a great sense of humour. We look forward to returning on our next visit.

Classic style cuisine. Quite a formal feel to the restaurant, sometimes service was a little stilted. Superb Turbot dish. Crab risotto was slightly overcooked. Nice amuse bouche. Price was high, not convinced the cooking was at that price point.
