Gather in South Hams

Unfortunately, I’m disappointed. For the author's cuisine it is not only about the food. It is about what the chef wanted to say, it is about the history of the creation of the dish and only then about the food. The waiters simply served the dishes and said: this is pork with sauce, etc., enjoy and that's it. Sorry, maybe I don't understand something, but the food was not the most delicious, but it’s not so important! The experience that I wanted to get from a restaurant with a Michelin star I did not get.

Great restaurant with an excellent and well considered menu. Staff are tentative. Atmosphere was a tiny bit lacking as it was a Saturday night and it wasn't full but the decent soundtrack made up for it

We were visiting Devon and I had wanted to go for ages. Had the full tasting menu, very reasonably priced given the high quality of the ingredients and the work that had clearly gone into it. I was also impressed by the reasonable price of the cocktails which were fantastic. We ate over 2 hours, the timing was perfect, as was the food and service. So good in fact we are going again in a few days time. Thank you to all the team at Gather! We had a lovely relaxed time eating and chatting to the waiting staff and left perfectly stuffed! A triumph!

What an amazing restaurant!! The menus are brilliant, well balanced, seasonal and locally sought! Food is perfectly cooked, with the presentation being exemplary. Daisy (FoH) is simply delightful, very knowledgable and sets the perfect tone. Menus change monthly, so this may well become a regular, how wonderful! Team Gather take a bow! 💯

Very good as usual but choosing the full tasting menu rather than half meant a very slow process of 3 and half hours. A little too long for me. Also waitress couldn’t keep up with wine pairings and serve food in timely way. Noticed food sitting at the pass for some time before picked up.

Had a fabulous lunch here today. The meal was delicious and the attention to detail was incredible. So many layers of flavour. I'm still trying to figure out how chicken can be that tasty! Our waitress was also fantastic, very attentive, yet unobtrusive- it was perfect service. Can't wait to return.

This evening we had a spontaneous meal here. The service was very nice and attentive and we were served in a friendly manner. We were also very satisfied with the drinks and food!!! Everything homemade, fresh and aromatic. There was a greeting from the house and, surprisingly, after two courses, pralines. However, we have two points to complain about, which we immediately told the friendly waitress. First. It was too cold in the restaurant for us. As they say in Germany, “it drew like pike soup”. Eating well isn't fun if you're cold. Unfortunately, there was no way to remedy the situation, as turning on the heater meant having to turn up the ventilation, which would have caused a gust of wind to go over our heads. We preferred not to do that. Secondly. The main course was very delicious, but only lukewarm. If the plates had been warmed up beforehand, the food wouldn't have gotten cold so quickly. However, we have often had a positive experience here in England, that the plates are preheated very hot, which is a great thing. We also told the friendly waitress this information. All in all: a great address 👍 with small errors that can be easily ironed out 🙏🏻.

We had lunch today with our friends. We had the most delicious tasty meal, cooke d with thought and love. Nowhere does a souffle better. Lovely waitress. Gather is a little gem, a different food experience ,so reasonably priced and delicious. Well worth a visit. Harrison, the chef, creates memorable dishes with his tasty foraged ingredients. Enjoy!

Amazing tasting menu with an incredibly well paired accompanying wine flight. Great service, never felt rushed or too formal. Very much recommended for anyone in or visiting Totnes.

I rarely review but this is one of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to, whether Devon or London. Excellent fresh local produce and generous service (you get delicious complementary starters and petit fours). A must go if you want to experience the best of food around here.

What can I say except wow! Totally amazing food, balance of flavours, textures & smells, all with the use of foraged foods, we had the tasting menu both the normal menu & a the vegetable one for my wife, which were both phenomenal.... I suspect this place will be very hard to get in fairly soon, well worth the visit.... Top drawer

Holy cow! This place is heaven, we went here earlier in the year for our wedding meal, had the taster menu which was incredible and have been back for the 3 course meal (you get aperitif and petit fours as well!). The food is so so good and mostly locally sourced or foraged. Service is smart and friendly. The guys in the kitchen are doing a grand job, such inventive and delicious dishes!

Voucher gift received from my son and his wife. Delightful waitress on hand to answer any menu questions, mix cocktails, serve us the exquisite food chosen from one of 3 menus and clear the plates in a graceful manner. The whole experience was delightful. The loo could perhaps do with an artist’s touch!

We had the tasting menu. We thought overall the food was great and good value for money. Some really interesting flavours. The only thing I think that could be improved was the lighting, it’s too bright for evening service and should be considerably dimmed.

We enjoyed delicious, memorable dishes that were skilfully prepared to perfection. Amuse bouche were the best we’ve had this year. The hake dish was incredible tasty. Pork belly too. Desserts to due for. Service is excellent, just go.

A very warm welcome greats you at the door, and escorts you to your table, which if elegantly decorated. Menus are waiting for you. What an experience it was, the menu so inventive, and the food did not disappoint. Such a fantastic choice, beautifully presented, and delicious to eat. The young chefs are just amazing, their talent is immense. Loved both courses plus additional treats. It is a little jewel of Totnes, Devon. We have already booked another date. I feel we will be back again and again. The other amazing thing the chefs go foraging for everyday to pick those flavoursome additions to the meals. Hence the name "Gather"

Whilst the food cannot be faulted, the front of staff let this restaurant down. They are inattentive, lack knowledge regarding waiting duties and have attitude which completely ruins the experience. When we arrived there were only 2 tables with customers on, yet we had to wait at the front door as no front of house. When eventually seated, having finished the bread course, our plates were not taken away until our starter had been placed on the table. On another occasion the serving plates were taken away whilst I was still eating so felt rushed yet we had another 20-30 minutes wait until our next course. Replacement cutlery were only provided when the next course arrived and not in advance. The only time we were asked if the meal was ok was at payment and I’m not sure if we had said no they wouldn’t have known what to do about it. We were addressed as “you guys”- very unprofessional. There were many instances where no staff were in the dining room to provide service

Tonight, we had the pleasure of the set menu. Absolutely amazing, beautiful presentation, fantastic attentive service, full description of each dish, perfect ambience and incredible food. Gather is a real gem of the South Hams, each dish, a perfect marriage of flavours, yet still each component being individually apparent. Wow Congratulations to all at Gather!

We were so excited to try Gather after hearing great things and reading the very positive reviews. There were some lovely parts to our tasting menu, but overall we left feeling underwhelmed and disappointed. My comments are based on paying £100 per person. We’ve had better experiences locally for a similar price-point. The snacks and bread at the start of the menu were great and there were other elements through the meal that we enjoyed. We were excited to have foraged and local ingredients championed on the plate, but for many courses they were either not discernible or spoken about. There were some courses that weren’t very pleasant such as the leek and potato terrine. Like the food, there were some really thoughtful touches for the interior that were let down by others that were a bit odd or out of place. There were some simple things that could have instantly improved our experience in terms of the setting… Having lower lighting for the evening and slightly raising the volume of the music for the quieter start of the night. Updating the loo with something other than febreeze and basic soap. Washing the front entrance which unfortunately someone must have peed on the night before. Pacing the service- we had the plate whipped away when we were still chewing a couple of times.

Four of us traveled down from Bristol to experience Gather - and it was SO worth the journey. We went for the full tasting menu and accompanied wine flight. Every course was a delight served in friendly, unpretentious surroundings. We all agreed that it was the best meal we have ever eaten. Thank you. We will be back.

Had the fixed price lunch menu for a birthday lunch. Everyone in the group thoroughly enjoyed every dish. Food was absolutely delicious and staff were very efficient and friendly. Can honestly say one of the nicest meals I've had. Hope to return soon.

We went with two other couples and had the full tasting menu, there were 7 courses, and all of them presented perfectly, the flavours were outstanding. The two waitresses were very pleasant and explained each course. There was a bit of a wait between courses, but we were having a jolly evening with friends. We would certainly go again. Overall it was an awesome meal, FANTASTIC!

Were in the South Hams on holiday and wanted somewhere special to eat for our wedding anniversary. This place did not disappoint. It was a mid week special menu so choice was limited to three choices for each course, but the food was absolutely delicious and the waiting staff were excellent . The coffee and wine were very reasonably priced which overall made the meal excellent value. Would thoroughly recommend.

All to often I’ve eaten in restaurants and felt shortchanged . Not so here. Top class cooking of seasonal ingredients beautifully presented and served with a smile. If I lived in Totnes I’d be a regular visitor!

Very impressed by the beautifully crafted and innovative taster menu, as well as the knowledgable and efficient front of house team. It was refreshing to see younger chefs bringing fresh new menus which were exciting and made for an overall great experience.

Excellent meal and service from start to finish - from the small details in the decor and food to the professional, attentive service given by the waiting staff. I've been to pretty much all of the restaurants in and around Totnes as this is now top of my list.

We celebrated a lovely anniversary in the restaurant this week and the staff made it extra special with a few kind gestures

This is (was?) our go to restaurant for anything special. We went last week for a birthday celebration. All four chose the half tasting menu with wine flight. Not a cheap option at £75 a head. To start the service was abysmal. We had to ask for a drink after 20 minutes sat at the table. The restaurant was not full. The fish was lovely. But another long wait. No drinks. Asked for more water. Main course was good. Portions seem to be smaller than usual. Which is saying something. Another long wait. The cheese was accompanied by a strawberry tart that was anything but tart! Then came the sweet which was tart by comparison - although it has to be said was pleasant enough. But the evening by that time was ruined. Once one is irritable a meal ceases to be a pleasure. One of us had coffee and the advertised petite fours did not arrive. By which time we had lost the will to live, paid and left. It certainly was NOT good value. We could have had two bottles of more than decent wine for the cost of the wine flight - which was anything but spectacular. Not sure whether they were having a bad night. We will not rush back to find out which is sad as they were a great place and we have had many good meals there.

We went to Gather for lunch and had the Prix Fixe menu which was delicious and good value. The extra bits were a lovely touch too, the amuse bouche, bread and butter, and the petit fours. Had the tasting menu here last weekend and it was just incredible. Best tasting menu I’ve ever had. The restaurant is run by an impressive young team who are knowledgeable and very helpful. Will definitely be back. Update, July 2023: We finally made it back to Gather and it did not disappoint. This time we had the Prix Fixe lunch menu on a Saturday. For £35 for three courses this is incredibly good value, as you also get an amazing canapé, homemade bread with specialty butter, and petit fours (really making it more like 5 courses). We found the wine list to be very reasonably priced as well. Another amazing meal from the best restaurant in South Devon.

Lovely, lovely experience. The food, service and wine were gorgeous. I so appreciated the flexibility of the restaurant letting my husband and I do different tasting menus. It was not pretentious but at the same time it’s quietly elegant. The menu and website also doesn’t reflect how creative the food and wine selections are or how much of the food is locally foraged. I can only describe it as a outstanding experience. It equals or beats a heck of a lot of Michelin star restaurants I have eaten in. It has all the elegance without the fuss. A must do.

Gather is always our go-to for a nice celebration meal! Delicious food in an intimate setting, each dish has flavours and textures that match perfectly. The wait staff are always so informative about every dish. The vegetarian menu is just as good as the regular menu too which can be hard to find.

Had a very nice and tasty dinner with great slow cooked lamb as the main course, my only suggestion would be to have evn more foraged (gathered) ingrediants.

What a great find this restaurant is! Small venue on the high Street. We were a group of 8 over a celebration lunch, we had the full tasting menu with wine flight and it was delicious! Love their ethos around their produce and had some really interesting dishes. Every course was super, great wine choices too. Would highly recommend, great to see a local independent restaurant offering fine dining, and I hope they get the support to flourish
