We thought we would try Mr Bean in Sayers Lane on our visit today to Tenterden. A nice array of cakes and pastries. We bought our favourite, a toasted teacake which we usually have at another coffee shop. I found a table for us but it was dirty with crumbs and sugar and rather near to the air conditioner in the ceiling which was blowing out cold air, something you would need on a hot day, not on a cold, rainy March day, as well as the doors being wide open. I moved to another table but like the previous one, felt grimy and sticky, in need of a good scrub!! The teacakes arrived. Large, with very little fruit, more like a biscuit than a teacake. Certainly not enough butter to cover the unusually large surface area and rather dry. I went to use the ladies toilet, but only found a disabled toilet. Upon entering I found it to be very unsavoury, wet floor and generally unfit for use. As it is the only toilet and obviously used by male and female customers, this makes it essential to keep vigilant over its cleanliness. All in all, with the higher prices and the state of the establishment we will not be going back.

Yummy cake and a nice little quiet place to sit down and enjoy it with a fresh smoothie. Set back enough from the road to sit outside if the weather is pleasant. Covid safety = spot on. Whilst there a deep clean was begun and sections of the cafe closed to do this.

This was a really bad choice. The shop had a queue going out the door and there was one server who kept stopping to chat with her friend. We were third in line and it took us 22minutes to reach the till. Then when we ordered it took forever, altogether another 39minutes to order and get out drinks and food delivered. They only let you say one item at a time for what you wanted, then they make /prepare that before asking for the next thing. The cafe was dirty and most of the tables were not cleared. The food however was very nice but the drinks were not. Mine was luke warm and not nice at all. This was the not the first time we had been here and each time it took forever. E hoped it was a one off but it seems that it isn't. I don't think we will use this cafe again.

Can only give it average. The staff were friendly enough but the coffee was only coffee and my capuccino did not have any chocolate on it. The place itself looks like it could do with a bit of a makeover. There is one good point, however, and that is the children's play area. It's a shame because this is the coffee house centre of Cranbrook and the opposition will win out as they look better.

A lovely location if only a little ‘tired’ inside. Onwards and upwards to shopping, Sayers Lane is the coffee house Centre of Tenterden so there is a great deal of choice. I struggled between poor and average as ‘average’ is an escalating measure nowadays. It’s been a few years since I’ve been here and the service was lovely and friendly. Might be an idea to print the wifi code on the receipt as well as the loo unlocking code? Just an idea. My coffee and sandwich was lovely too, but and here is the but. I felt that the place is in serious need of a make over. My table (throwback ‘70’s) was ‘sticky’ which is not an endearing sensation. I had the impression that the owner has lost interest. This is a shame as it could now be so much more. Without investment the competition will get decisive votes. On the plus side the kiddies corner was an interesting addition. I do write this because I’d like to see Mr Bean burgeoning once again

Discussed, hadn't noticed the state of the place until we sat down. At a dirty table the floor was rotten. Was covered in food and napkin and I mean covered. Like no one had cleaned it for days. As for the toilet 🤮🤮🤮 never been cleaned. Coffee was undrinkable and left from both of us. Sandwiches very over priced, reheated dried sausages, bacon hardly cooked. Never again will we go hear, shame as were both local.

My son and I stopped here for a quick lunch during a recent visit to Tenterden. My son had a Mango smoothie and a tuna sandwich. The sandwich was very generously filled. I had a coffee and a cheese and tomato toastie which was very tasty. It was busy during our visit there but not overcrowded. The ladies who served us were very friendly and accommodating. The prices were very reasonable considering the location. I would definitely visit again if I am back in the area.

My Father often pops in here for a Coffee or snack but this was the first time I had visited. Very unimpressed the tables were dirty & when one customer dared to ask to have the table wiped which they shouldn’t have to do, they were treated as if they were a real nuisance! The person who appeared to be the supervisor shouted from one end of the shop to the other at a member of staff ‘ This customer wants the table wiping’ in a dreadful manner. I wanted to buy a piece of cake & coffee from the cakes on display but was told I could only have the chocolate one as she wasn’t going to cut the other one yet! I asked why it was on display then. To be told very briskly that it was they didn’t have room in their fridge. Poor management & organisation. Don’t bother with this place there is such choice of Coffee shops in Tenterden now, that you don’t need to put up with shoddy service. They are living off the location being next to Waitrose.

Just wanted to speak up for the parents with children who visit this lovely little cafe. We are lucky in Tenterden to have at least 9 cafes (that I can think of off the top of my head) each perhaps offering something a little different. Mr Beans is perfect for parents getting a coffee and sitting in the back half of the cafe near the play area. It also offers seating towards the front away from the play area and also outside seating. Something for everyone therefore. This morning I came in with my well behaved 4 year old and got a cappuccino for me and a ‘decorate your own gingerbread man’ for her. It was lovely to be able to relax and have a coffee while she decorated her gingerbread man, played with the trains and looked at some books. She didn’t disturb anyone else in the cafe and was quietly occupied. I love the fact Mr Beans offers this for the parents of Tenterden.. there are plenty of other options for those that don’t approve.

I can't understand why this place hasn't got more reviews. I don't normally review places but was so impressed with our lunch here that I felt I should. Speaking as a self proclaimed "difficult customer" I found Mr Beans to be perfect for my needs. No request was too big or too much hassle for the staff to meet. I received my coffee and Toastie exactly as I had requested and my son received his bacon batch (after much chopping and changing his mind) with a friendly smile and good humour at the "tough" choices kids are faced with today. The place was also clean and well presented with a lovely little area for children to play in. Staff could not have been more welcoming and accommodating. Cannot recommend this place highly enough. Will definitely be returning on my next visit.

I usually visit Mr Bean during the week with friends and the lady who serves is friendly and very helpful, however at the weekend my 6 year old was desperate for the toilet and although the policy is you can't use the WC unless you purchase, as I am a regular I thought they wouldn't mind. However, on leaving the staff were very sarcastic and this has now put me off going back. I know policies are there for a reason but when young children are concerned sometimes policies need to be broken. The staff at the weekend were younger and maybe they have never dealt with a desperate for the toilet young child!!! I have therefore only rated 3 stars rather than the 4 for during the week!

Entered this coffee shop at 16:45. Two members of staff behind the counter. The one with multi coloured hair, Doc Martin boots, whose name appeared to be Sarah, asked me if I knew that they shut at 17:00, obviously implying that I really should go somewhere else. Ordered espresso and cheese and bacon croissant anyway. Both were clearly not impressed and I felt that they wanted to make it clear that I had overstepped the mark. Furniture was collected from outside before closing time and at 16:55 the dustbin and broom appeared.Fortunately I don't care about this kind of attitude but others may be intimidated. A pleasant café full of locals who enjoy the food, drink & friendly staff. But the awful piped music coming through the speakers day in/day out is teeth-grindingly repetitive, bland & annoying not just to me but many others. We laugh about it but shouldn't have to put up with Moby, Buble, Coldplay or Cher (Cher!) every single time. Silence would be preferable to such bland & offensive dribble. And after all, atmosphere is crucial to a coffee shop. I've asked the staff to change the music but am told it's on a hard drive. Poor them! The staff were superb, very attentive without being overbearing. I gather the coffee shop has recently undergone a refurbishment and I thought it looked fresh and totally different from the norm you find in most of the big chains. I particularly liked the idea of using a piano as a condiment stand and the children's play area must be a real boon to those mum's who need coffee and a rest from the children. This was my first time at this coffee shop but if I visit Tenterden again I will definitely go back.

Visited Mr Bean Coffee Shop this week, for the first time since the renovations. It must be difficult to get the balance between "child friendly" and "smart Coffee shop" and I think they have got it just right. The well thought out train table in the children's play area is situated in a position which can be monitored by parents from most areas of the coffee bar. It is shielded from nearby tables by well thought out bench seating. A strategically placed, recycled upright piano has been cleverly used as a stand for napkins, cutlery and condiments - nice nostalgic touch. The decor is very smart and comfortable. The coffee has always been good, as have our favorites, the eccles cakes and custard danish. This time I tried a cheese on toast, which is made using their much vaunted cheese and ale bread - as good as I had hoped! The staff are always friendly and the service is very good.As for the new toilet area it was dark but I understand that has now been sorted. It is a shame and a sad reflection on our society, that the toilet needs to be keypad coded but when I asked why, their explanation made sense. The bonus is that only customers are using the facilities and therefor they are clean.

Have to say, much as I love the warm, friendly, welcome always offered by Sue and her staff, the new look is a real disappointment. Very grey, dingy and the 'library wallpaper' is worse than awful. Yes, the place could do with some updating but a piano for the bits and pieces containers? Why? Really sad that a great opportunity for a redesign has been wasted and the place is now rather gloomy and depressing. Used to go in every day but not sure that I will be anymore. Talk to your customers about what THEY want, not what you think that they want. Spoken to other regular patrons and haven't found anybody else that actually likes it either. That should tell you something.Dave, Tenterden.

Went in today after a few weeks and what a shock, it was looking a bit tatty, before but always felt friendly, now after a refit, it feels very cold. They gone for a wooden panel look, painted a dark, brown, grey, with giant prints of books, to give it a library feel on the walls even the booths are the wood dark colour, Seems they tried to go upmarket and in my view failed, I might give the place a miss, it feels cold and not nice to sit in. Shame.

Have been there three times now and the cakes, salads and sandwiches are allways excelent, the staff there just makes me feel welcome, and thats just what I was looking for, a nice coffee shop like home. Thanks

This has been open for a good few years and yes looking a bit tired, but great food, coffee and snacks and cakes, and a great selection of papers to read. The staff are friendly. And the seats a mixture of benches, upright chairs and soft armchairs. One thing I hate is the outside tables are around the open double doors and the smoke from smokers can waft in, that is not nice. Not the best cafe in Tenterden as has been pointed out, but it feel less formal than most in the town and is much more easy going, if you have young children, who can be a bit loud, this may be the place to come.

Not sure when the last 2 reviews went but I loved it. I had a delicious cheesy filled roll and a pot of proper loose leaf tea. Kids had kids boxes juice and sandwich plus a little cakeThey don't take credit cards but not sure what the other form of payment they don't take. All in all good

I visited there back in April with a friends considering moving to Tenterden and was received by a disdainful staff member who REFUSED two forms of payment (even though the bill came to over £15). The interior decor was absolutely tatty with furnishings tired and sticky and stains up the wall behind the coffee machine. Cutlery dirty and overall venue grubby and dirty. The owners do not deserve to have trade and if they deem such crap as acceptable in Tenterden, then they are wrong. I'd much rather use Caffe Nero or Costa. At least you get a smile in Cafe Rouge etc.

We went into Mr. Beans in Tenterden on a horrible, rainy Saturday afternoon. A nice cup of coffee and a roll, thought we........It was quite busy in there, not a problem - but there only appeared to be two staff on duty. Which quickly showed why the tables had not yet been cleared or wiped and why there was food and rubbish and general debris under the tables.I purchased two rolls from the counter fridge to eat in. Mine was still defrosting and wet in the middle, which I took back and was told that the 'fridge was obviously too cold and so I exchanged my egg and tomato roll for a cheese salad roll and found this to have stale cheese in .... Now that's an unpleasant smell !! Given that by now I'd lost what appetite and enthusiasm I did have, it seemed the best idea to leave and get a sandwich from Waitrose - a bit of an own goal there, Mr. Bean! Also, having to use the toilets was an experience neither myself nor my partner would choose again.....wet floors, horrible smell, dirty and untidy.Having used the cafe in Hastings several times and found it be be fine - this was an unwelcome surprise and one they won't be having a chance to repeat.

Nothing wrong with the food as such, but very dark and dingy and not somewhere that makes you feel as though you want to go back - tended to use it for take away sandwiches.

I'm loathe to call Mr Bean 'poor' because it isn't, but when faced with the amount of choice one is faced with in Tenterden then Mr Bean would probably always be my last choice of coffee shop. I honestly think this place has survived as well as it has because of prime location next to the Waitrose entrance. Quality-wise, though, I'd say Costa, Nero, Savannah, Zest and the Nutmeg Delicatessen, even Cafe Rouge, would be better for a coffee, cake, or lunch.

Great for milkshakes and and a good cake. It's great to sit outside this cafe on a lovely sunny morning down a beautiful lane in Tenterden. Perfect!

Used to use this cafe regularly but now the toilets have codes on them that they will not give you unless you buy something. I completely understand this but, when you are in the queue to buy and they refuse (very rudely) to give you the code as you have not yet purchased then that is not good customer service.

After a long ride with some friends decided to stop in at the bull inn. Lovely place and felt welcomed by all the staff. We decided to get lunch as well as a drink. the lasagne was amazing and the food came to us quickly. Will definitely be returning on future ride outs.
