This is basically a garden centre that will blow you away. There is a quaint cafe that you must visit. The plants on display are mostly for sale and what they haven't got is not worth needing.

Extremely disappointing visit. We sat down with no menus and waited for 10 minutes before anyone came to take our order. We then waited another 15 minutes for 2 hot drinks (it was not busy and they took payment straight away - we were told ‘you have to pay now’). We brought this to a lady called Caroline’s attention (who was making drinks) and she rudely said ‘I am on my own I can’t go faster, you’ve only waited 10 minutes’. We then asked for the drinks to be in takeaway cups as we were in a rush. We waited for these and overheard her say to a colleague ‘they haven’t even waited long, well that’s good for me I don’t need to do another order’. This extremely rude lady should not be responsible for this cafe and if she is unable to make the drinks on her own, they should let customers know prior to payment that there will be a delay and enquire for help. Such a shame as it is a lovely place.

Being part of a walking group, we phoned ahead to see if they could accommodate us at 2.30.. we arrived, went upstairs to be told no downstairs ..( not a problem) we got seated were told by one young girl .. please go upstairs to order ..no was met by another member of staff that is not correct! back we go to the tables downstairs . then told please go downstairs in twos to order ?? Why ? To keep a check on us ?? No names taken ., we were standing in twos like lemons .. ordered drinks.. went to look at fridge/cabinet was told that was not allowed to look at cakes ( had masks on) Told only two cheese scones left .. I said is that scone in the bottom of the fridge for sale .. yes last one!! Other people that followed ordered scones and part of the group were sitting with mouths open ?? Why have you got a scone ?? We were told none left ?Latte arrived with sugar .. fine .. said could I have a spoon please.. not sure if there is any ?? Will go and check .. improvised with the knife!! No spoon did arrive .. table with other friends on.. ordered just after us.. waited 30 mins for tea latte and the treasured cheese scone ! Someone had to go and ask what was going on,The Black board coming in does say please take a seat the waitress will take your order. The cafe was not particularly busy god help us if all 22 of our group had returned for refreshments .I appreciate things are different but the service was totally ridiculous.. no one seemed to know what was what.. was remarked it was like a screening for a Faulty Towers Follow on!! Not sure why a member of staff could not take an order for all 6 people seated bring the drinks n food .. instead of all the utter nonsense .. could not organise a @@@@ in a brewery springs too mind.

Wonderful pizza but waiting 35 minutes is too long. When asking were the food was being told we make everything from scratch and we only have one chef. Why not tell people of the long dealys before ordering and paying? Also not very professional for staff to mutter when asked about delays.

Lovely surprise! We were recommended to try here by friends, we live quite local and visit nearby Askham Hall often but had never heard of the place. On arrival you could nearly miss it, it’s absolutely gorgeous building that almost blends in with nature, it wouldn’t be out of place inHarry Potter or Lord of the Rings. There are lovely gifts in the shop and the restaurant/cafe which is accessed via the walled garden area is another fantasy like, oak framed building, great furniture (which I think really adds to an eating out experience, who wants to sit on a rubbish chair at a rickety table?!)We ordered soup and a pizza, both great, homemade and tasty. Would definitely recommend, will definitely go again and in future will be the destination rather than Askham Cafe which as much as I really want to be good is unfortunately really hit and miss...

No puedo llegar fácilmente a otro lado. Extravagante lata de lugar. A todos nos encantó. Visitamos después de que un amigo se fue por accidente. Came here for my mother in laws 60th birthday as a special treat. We decided to sit on the balcony for our food to take in the views. We had ordered our food and drink before being asked to move seats as someone had reserved a table for four, for a birthday. My mother in law had explained that it was her 60th birthday which was rudely shrugged off by the server. Firstly there was no reservation card on the table (there had been cards on other tables), secondly when finishing up the bill the server half heartedly apologised and said that other people were unhappy too and that the balcony was popular, thirdly there was no mention of any discount from the bill (not that we were expecting this but at least my mother in laws cake and tea could have been free) and finally by the time we had eaten the meal, chatted, took in views and paid the bill the rest of the party of four had not arrived. I fully understand that people reserve tables however on this occasion the table we sat at had no reservation card where as others did, the food and drink had already been ordered and at no point were we told the table was reserved until the order had been placed and we had sat for 5-10 minutes. Excellent views and location but disappointing service.

We visited here after seeing Lowther Castle and Gardens. This is a huge nursery with a large number of plants. Sadly many had fallen over in the wind, even coming out of their pots showing very dry roots. There seemed to be too many for the staff to look after properly, and were quite expensive. Very good labelling however. The gardens themselves were pretty but a further area had to be paid for (£4 each). We didn’t visit the cafe. The gift shop was very overpriced. An item we saw and bought in Spindlecraft was three times more expensive here in this nursery.

We were getting a bit worried as we drove here - I had read that it was a short detour from the motorway and it felt like we were driving quite a long way and we were unsure about what was at the end of the journey. We had a lovely time here and wished we had allocated more time (and more space in the boot!). The plants are lovely and of good quality spread over a wide area. The restaurant was very pleasant and served just the right sort of food for the weather - we really enjoyed our Italian meal. We ended up buying considerably more than we had planned and had to have it delivered. We would definitely stop off here again.

Poor quality meal. Pizzas arrived after 30 minutes wait. They were both cold and hard with a black edging in places. The pepperoni pizza had no pepperoni on it whatsoever. The only difference from the margarita was 5 olives and some wilted rocket thrown on top. The ingredients used to make this pizza were obviously the cheapest available. Having travelled extensively in the world and been in catering ourselves we can honestly say these were the worst we have eaten and will certainly not return for the food.

Tuve un quiche, que era una porción de buen tamaño y obviamente hecho con ingredientes de calidad, pensé que podría venir con más de un poco de ensalada por el precio pero lo disfruté. After a long walk my friend and I called in for lunch . We went upstairs and sat down in a half full cafe at 12.50 . There was one very flustered waitress who eventually brought us a menu after about 10 minutes. We ordered a tea and a coffee , a piece of quiche and a bruschetta. Others people arrived and we sat and sat , and when we saw their food and drinks arriving we called the waitress over and asked what was happening. She apologised and said it was on its way . At 1.50 the drinks came with more apologies - but no milk . In the end I went downstairs and asked for some from the kitchen . We drank our beverages and decided to leave when our food turned up at 2 .15 ! Again lots of apologies, only 3 serving the whole of the place and one cook in the kitchen. Talking to the couple on the next table they said the service was frequently awful . They knocked the price of the drinks off but too little too late . And £19 for a piece of quiche and a thrown together bruschetta ? Really spoiled our day , and needless to say we won’t be rushing back . This is a lovely nursery and a pretty cafe they need a rocket up their a- - e and learn to be more professional and get this place on track .

My friend went for the bruschetta and she said it was also lovely. The only downside was the wait for food as we waited around 40 minutes. Would definitely visit again though!

After visiting the nursery we stopped for lunch. On the veranda we enjoyed a little breeze and a view of the gardens. My sea trout salad was lovely. Friends had the smoked salmon and bruschetta, they were both delighted. Lovely to see different, fresh menu items. Ps the cakes looked lovely but had to pass.

Very disappointed with experience, advised by staff to try the gatehouse upstairs but when searching out a table preferably outside as it was hot we were shouted at by a man who was basically very rude shouting you can’t sit there it is for six people and abruptly said you can sit in there, another table for six inside. After spending over 160 pounds in plants we were disgusted with his arrogant and rude attitude. Well after 1pm did it matter? We enjoyed our last lunch there a couple of weeks ago with a lovely lady waiting on, what a contrast and disappointment. We voted with our feet and went elsewhere. Time for customer care training

Eating outside in this glorious weather was a treat - we had a bijou table on the outdoor gallery, overlooking the gardens. Delightful. My friend's grilled sardines were cooked to perfection and nicely presented and my pizza was tasty with a thin, crispy base. Service was slow - they were obviously at full stretch, and our lovely young waitress was charmingly apologetic about our wait - it didn't bother us, to be honest as we weren't in a rush. Whilst it was all lovely, the menu struck me as pretty expensive - north of a tenner for pizza ain't cheap!

Whilst we enjoy visiting the nurseries which are an exploration of delight this is the second time we have found the cafe a major disappointment. Staff need customer care training. Quality of food not the best and prices high. It is surprising they think it is acceptable to allow a cat to roam at will which clambers over customers feet whilst they dine and leaving kitchen doors open to the elements is another issue. Not recommended

Travelled to the nurseries from Keswick only to find that dogs were not allowed anywhere on the premises, not even in the garden area. Guven that it was a hot day and my dog couldn't be left in the car, we went away again. I think that Larch Cottage Nurseries are a bit out of step in that most garden centres allow dogs in the plant areas etc even if not in tbe restaurant....won't be returning.

The garden centre is the very best we have ever visited. Absolutely superb range of plants trees, shrubs etc many of very unusual variety set in a large beautifully laid out ornamental garden. Very well worth a relatively long journey to visit. Superb. Unfortunately the restaurant doesn't live up to the quality of the gardens. Grossly overpriced for the quality and service of the food. Sticky table even after it was wiped over, had to ask for condiments, a pizza slicer and sugar,. Friendly staff, seemingly a bit clueless. An very average glass of wine £5, 2 very average pizzas and a tea,, £22.50 !

Fantastic day out at Larch Cottage. Lunch on the Wisteria twisted Balcony was delightful and with the sizzling weather we have been having and great taste in music we could have been dining on the Med instead of Cumbria. The pizza Pescora was one of the best I have ever tasted. My husband enjoyed the sea trout salad. Refreshing drinks and beautiful cakes and coffee to finish after a walk round the garden centre/vistas. Plants are a great price. Red Barn have some lovely gifts and things for the home. Ample parking. The Chapel and gardens were closed today so we will have to make another visit to see those. Stunning location and place to visit. Book a table to avoid disappointment. Thank You.

Called in for a coffee and a treat - which through the lovely selection available was a maple and pecan slice definitely homemade. Great staff and efficient service, lovely place to sit with a fabulous view. Very week maintained gardens and plants for sale with lots of staff on hand for advise and weeds kept in check - only issue would be trying to pay, someone served me as no one else was available and was quite abrupt and uninterested in customer service - shame really as everything else was very professional. Shame I had to reduce the rating for garden centre staff as restaurant staff was fab.

Visited mid week with our granddaughter who is vegetarian. Service was pleasant and prompt. Most customers were'of a certain age', a lot having coffee and cake. We had - mushroom risotto, mackerel- from the specials board and pizza. The 'adult size' pizza was adequate for our 8 year old but the adult dishes, although tasty, were quite small considering the price. Just short of £40 for the meals and 2 soft drinks. Will not rush back.

As keen amateur gardeners we called in while we were on holiday and were absolutely delighted to find this treasure of a nursery tucked away. Not only were there some amazing statues and iron work to buy to enhance your garden, but some very different plants at very reasonable prices. We came away with a boot full of a mix of both. I was stunned to see on trip advisor that the nursery does not even get a mention compared to the service and food of the restaurant. I say forget the restaurant and just go for the plants and if it leads to a cup of coffee or plate of something that is a bonus. I would highly recommend this nursery and I wish we lived nearer!! Staff were lovely too.

We specifically made the hour long trip to Larch Tree nurseries today, Sunday, to be able to visit the little church. We've visited several times before but not on a Sunday. Our experience in the restaurant/cafe today was nothing less than dreadful. We arrived just before 1pm, looking forward to an enjoyable lunch as on some previous visits. The service has never been exactly speedy but today was beyond a yoke. We found a table upstairs and the waitress appeared with the menus, we asked for 2 glasses of water with ice and another 5 miniatures to make our food choices. Straight away another waitress appeared and informed the young girl serving us that there were no pizzas left. The reason given was they had run out of yeast! Given this was 1pm and lunch is served until 3pm it wasn't exactly inspiring. We asked our waitress what the soup was, the exclamation was that it was a sort of mixed vegetable creamed soup 'a greeny, yellowy, browny colour'! Trying to ignore this information and taking into account the fact that pizzas form quite a large part of the menu, we ordered 2 soups, a crab and salmon crostini and a mushroom bruschetta. We politely asked if we could have the glasses of water whilst waiting for our food. Huge apologies and the fact that our waitress was going to help out with drinks as there were such a lot of orders! All we wanted was tap water! 40 minutes after sitting at our table my husband went down to ask how much longer our food would be. An enquiry was made to the one and only person in the kitchen - 10 minutes. By this time we'd had enough and others who were waiting for just a drink and cake had also decided to leave. The man on the next table had to ask for the extra bread he requested after waiting 10 minutes. We then left - we never even got the glasses of water! Having had no lunch we then had to drive somewhere else therefore didn't get to wander round the nurseries or yet again, visit the church,It's obvious that things need to change regarding the restaurant/cafe. More staff would be a start. We felt so sorry for our young waitress who kept apologising and was obviously under a lot of stress. We reassured her that it wasn't her fault but the problem must lie with someone. Maybe a good start would be to not make their own pizza dough!!!It will be a long time until we visit again. The saddest thing is that I wrote a glowing message to the owners after our first visit. It most certainly doesn't apply now.

I usually love coming to Larch Cottage Nurseries. Have been doing so for years. Our experience in the restaurant yesterday was just awful. I accepted the fact that the waitress was serving people who had just walked in before other's who had been waiting for service a long time. It took over an hour to get our pizzas. That was ok but I was shocked that the waitress was happy to serve our pizzas with one half burnt on one side. The other had the crust completely burnt black all the way around. We sent the worse one back, when a new one eventually came it was ok looking on top but burnt underneath, I could taste it before I saw it. Unpleasant. When we paid we got one free coffee. That was an insult, we did not get to eat our meals together and it was not good. Also because of all the waiting we purchased more drinks as we were sitting around so to be given one free drink was just terrible considering the food was so bad. I would not eat there again.

I've been a happy customer of Larch Cottage Nurseries for many years, always enjoying the plant quality and wide selection and also having refreshments in the tea room, which (unlike some reviewers here) I have only had good experiences of - perhaps because I limit my orders to tea / cakes though and avoid busy times. I'm therefore very disappointed to report a downright nasty interaction with the owners / management yesterday when I tried to return an unsatisfactory plant about which I'd had email correspondence the week before. The office staff had instructed me to bring it in for a replacement, though declining my offer of photographs I took at point of planting that showed the lack of a viable root ball and what I identified as a vine weevil larvae (possibly dead). When I did so however, the swap was refused pretty much point blank at the till, the office staff being unavailable to clarify the matter. The owners evidently disagreed with me about the original problem and cause (I'm a very experienced gardener so wasn't easily dissuaded), but what was so upsetting was that they accused me of 'wrenching' the plant out of its pot and thereby damaging the plant by my own hand! Why I'd do that with a lovely looking plant I'd bought at no small expense I am not sure, my point was simply that I wanted to show them its undersize rootball and swap it for the replacement I had been offered via email. On the very occasional time this has happened to me with other nurseries and plant returns I have always been treated with respect and genuine care for my custom. However, here the owner's temper flared rapidly (although one member of staff present was more reasoned) and I suggested several times we take our discussion to an office away from awaiting customers, but - very bizarrely - he declined and so a small crowd witnessed this debacle. Regardless of the nature of our disagreement about the plant, it was sadly evident that the owner has no regard for his customers (myself, a longstanding one) and those watching with embarrassment, about to buy from him. He was prepared to handle this customer service situation in the most degrading and public way possible. I left in tears and won't be returning.

Since my first visit I have been back as many times as I can with my parents (in their 80's) with my partner and with friends. The setting is stunning and the outdoor wooden balcony, overlooking the beautiful gardens and with classical music or opera playing in the background is something very special.
