We had to leave this time after being told our order could not be taken for 20 mins and our food would be a further 40mins.Its a shame the food can be great and the beer exceptional but 3 times we have visited with friends and its now embarrassing so off to other nearby places while the team at the Kings head sort themselves out.

Unorganised slow service, even though it was really empty inside. I ordered the beef and ale pie but got chicken and black pudding. The pie was tiny, I could have picked it up with one hand and the gravy was watery. Got offered a dessert menu but no one came back to take our order so just asked for the bill (twice) and left. Won’t he going back.

We ate here after climbing Green Bell. We got a bit disoriented on the descent and as a result extended our walk by several K. The welcome we received as we stumbled into The Kings Head was amazing, (as I am sure this happens a lot!). The lovely owners sat us next to the fire and brought our drinks over. They also provided treats and water for our dogs. The food arrived quickly and was outstanding. But what makes this place is the staff, who were so warm and friendly - they simply couldn’t do enough for us. We will definitely return.

My fiend took Me here for my birthday at my request as we are local. Despite the poor reviews & 0 hygiene rating we trusted in our local pub. I received my hanging kebab cold, it had been taken to another table by mistake & held in the kitchen.it was cold when I got it & the waitress took it back to the kitchen where they served it again with the chunks of lamb I had pulled apart missing. The waitress was very embarrassed & apologised. I cancelled my meal & had nothing to eat for my birthday meal. I will never go back despite being local & will do all the can I spread the word of poor quality & lack of service & hygiene . Disgusting service & quality. No apologies or acknowledgement from management. I know who you are & I know you were lnformed. We went a couple of times whilst staying near by in January. The food and staff were absolutely flawless, friendly, attentive and chatty without being overbearing, and the food was all beautiful. We had various things from the menu across two visits, burgers, pies, hanging kebabs and paninis - all excellent, and a great selection of vegetarian options. The toilets were spotless, drinks and food well priced. Strongly recommend, we will be coming back next time we visit the area.

Friendly enough couple of guys serving - two out of the three pies on the menu were off (we were told after we attempted to order, not before) so my wife opted for the 'pannini with hoummus and roasted vegetables'Sounds good on paper but it was truly awful - dry & pallid white - a pannini is a essentially a toasted sandwich - should be toasted golden brown, buttery inside - within was a smear of hoummus with some sun-dried tomatoes - definitely no roasted vegetables - the accompanying salad was a few lettuce leaves and two whole baby tomatoes rolling around the plate. It was also advertised as coming with' dipping sauce and chutney' - neither appeared to be presentAlso advertised as coming with skinny fries - these didn't show at first so we asked - the worst fries - all different widths (some like needles) but smelling of and sitting in a shallow pool of grease in the bottom of the bowl.. clearly the guy in the kitchen hasn't a clue and the menu description doesn't reflect the offer on the plate - I'm no cook but I can toast a pannini and I dry off fries on kitchen roll before servingMy beef brisket on a yorkshire pud was OK but with two drinks its still a bill of £40I just don't understand why a place fails so badly when its a quiet lunchtime in January - we're not wanting fine dining just good quality, well cooked food comparable to that you may prepare at home .. maybe we should have complained at the time but you're hungry so you shrug your shoulders and eat...If the place is to succeed and to encourage diners to return they must get that pub food, all food should be cooked and presented beautifully down to the last detail and the menu must be accurate - its not rocket science...note this review is intended as constructive criticism

After visiting several times over a week long stay nearby .. We now believe not all reviews are what they seem ..of course everyone has bad days … & lots of people are annoyed to be in the lakes & not an all inclusive holiday in let’s say Europe !! The setting, food, ambiance & staff all charming .. Alex & Charlotte could not do enough for our family …. Yes maybe at a slower pace but just a real relaxed atmosphere & Dog friendly too !!It Reminded us all of our holidays in years gone by as youngsters .. nice chats to local people .. In these times we should be supporting these places .. not finding fault. Everywhere has staff shortages & huge issues due to Covid & isolation etc … they just can’t broadcast it & forgotten far too easily for the staff covering & coping in these uncertain times .. Be kind ..We will definitely be returning in the new year with family & friends .. a beautiful little safe haven .. we thoroughly enjoyed our many visits here over the week. A chat grabbing a morning coffee for our walk …. lunch ..& dinner a few nights... & take away when we just wanted nice food & no company .. who does this service nowadays??? Not sure I know anywhere else like this ??? … thank you To the Kings Head … .Kenni what a great team you have under these harsh circumstances.. nothing but praise . . Well done x

We were part of a group booked for dinner, and on the basis that the Kings Head was apparently going to be busy, we'd been asked to pre-select our menu options a couple of days before. In fact, there didn't appear to be many other diners so not sure why this was necessary. Service was great - very friendly and helpful, but the food was, at best, mediocre, with more emphasis on quantity than quality. Only after we'd finished eating (and of course given that we'd not seen any menus since pre-ordering) did it occur to those of us who'd had pie that the promised 'jug of delicious home-made gravy' had not materialised. The skin-on chips were soggy, and overall, the dishes just seemed very underwhelming. Certainly wouldn't rush back.

We've been to the King's Head before so we were looking forward to lunch there. We arrived, sat down and waited to be attended to and given a menu. The serving staff - one older gent and one or two young women - were standing at the bar, drinking and chatting. So we waited for them - and waited - and waited. At no time did they even glance in the direction of the people sitting in the room. Eventually my wife got up and asked them if we should order a meal at the bar - and then the man sprung into action, taking our order but in a very over-familiar fashion. After another long wait the food arrived - and I have to say it was excellent, though the "skin-on chips" were actually huge, long-ways-sliced hunks of potato. The steak pie was lovely, as was the tomato soup with nice home-made bread. After we'd finished we sat - and sat - and sat. Eventually we asked for the table to be cleared, whereupon the first waiter removed some of the plates and didn't come back. And again, he'd been a bit on the over-familiar side, much too chatty and over-friendly in a creepy kind of way. Eventually we departed, and it took another waiter some time to sort out the bill. The prices were on the high side - pie, chips and mushy peas was £14 and a round of drinks - one large white wine, one small white wine and one pint of beer - was £19! All the time there was pop music playing in the background - not what you want in a nice country pub. I don't know if the pub has changed hands, but while the food was still excellent (though the menu seemed a bit more basic than it used to be), everything else about the place was a severe disappointment. And surely, waiting staff shouldn't be standing at the bar drinking and chatting at one o'clock in the afternoon with a room full of people wanting lunch - absolutely terrible!

After an hour we asked when our 4 carvery meals would be served and were told about another 15 minutes. 35 minutes later we were still waiting. At that point we summoned the landlord to complain. (He hadn’t spoken to us up until now to either explain or apologise). He simply shrugged his shoulders as we left. We booked on a Sunday 3pm. We have heard lovely things about this place, a 45 minute drive away for us.We arrived, pub was busy and sat down. Drinks arrived quickly. Young girl came to take our order, so we ordered a cheese pie and a beef roast. Oh, we have sold out of all Sunday’s roasts she said. We weren’t told when we were sat down and it’s only 3pm on a Sunday! They had only served 30 people before us. Why is it not possible to prep enough food for a Sunday lunch which the majority of people order on a Sunday.Food we had was nice, husband had a steak instead but really disappointed with lack of roast. When the food was brought to us, the waitress had my cheese pie and tried to give it to another table. She then went back to get the steak. We didn’t have any cutlery prior to getting the food. Had to ask for the gravy which came with the pie, also asked for salt and young waitress brought the salt and pepper over but both were empty. Husband went to find more but all the salts were empty! They were busy with drinkers and diners but with the service levels as they are and the lack of options on the Sunday menu, it’s not somewhere we will return in a hurry. Such a shame as it’s a lovely setting.

I hope our Sunday lunch experience was just a blip as the Pub is very nice and in a lovely village setting and dog friendly. There was even a guy playing his guitar. The place was busy and we had booked in advance. It didn’t take long to see that the kitchen was chaos, no doubt understaffed. Food was being served very haphazardly leaving many diners watching while one or two people on their tables ate.Drinks service was good and the staff friendly but after an hour it became clear we were unlikely to eat anytime soon…. To be fair the waitress came over at that point to say there were 27 people ahead of us so we would be waiting at least another half hour. We couldn’t wait any longer so we paid for our drinks and departed……not sure if the wait would have been worth it it looked like a very ordinary Sunday lunch which for £16 seemed overpriced. I hate to give poor reviews and I know retaining good chefs is a challenge but overloading the kitchen could have been avoided had they reduced the menu and not over committed themselves…..

The Kings Head at Ravenstone dale was fun from start to finish but, in a very different way. Run by 4 middle-aged gentlemen (2 of whom owned this Free House), business was brisk when we arrived on this river-side inn. Each of the 4 were giving of their all to serve their guests and answer any queries thrown at them. As the evening wore-on and folks went home, the residents took-up their tables – to everyone’s surprise, we thought the chefs appeared to have left with the local drinkers – no food appeared! The guests became ‘challenging’ but after an hour, plates of food appeared to the applause from the tables. Most were cold or a wrong order but it was difficult to cast raw criticism at the sole last member of the 4 gentlemen to survive. Clearly a busy day with no support from the indifferent agency cooks. Breakfast, the next morning, presented some concern as the occupants of 6 rooms came down the stairs. The agency chefs had long gone but an excellent buffet was to the credit of our 4 hosts. Scurrying to every call, every effort was made. As first downstairs, we cannot deny that we didn’t enjoy the ‘banter’ from the 6 tables; repartee at is finest as our gentlemen from the previous evening were back on duty.Whatever the temporary problems for the 4 gentlemen, the ethos, repartee, good humour of the King Head’s clientele whether from Oxford, London, Bucks or wherever, gelled and fun was had by all. Keep putting it together you 4 cavaliers you’ll get there.

It was a busy Friday night and the waitresses were Friendly but using one more may of helped ease the pressure on them.No information about anything was provided at check-in, this was also commented on by another couple we met. Room was fine although you can hear noises from other rooms so if you’re a light sleeper be warned. No cooked/hot breakfast was offered which was a disappointment with a long drive ahead. Friends visiting from Stoke booked a table for us with 14 days notice. We were seated at the table by an excellent young waiter… then much to his distress, the ‘management’ (in inverted commas, as they appear to have very limited managerial skills) asked them to move us from the restaurant to the table by the gentlemen’s toilets… it was overflowing with empties, it had two customers sitting at it already, and we would have had to duck every time the pool players took a shot! OBVIOUSLY we were unhappy about the situation, definitely not the young waiter’s fault (bless him, he shouldn’t legally have been working after 7pm anyway!) so we took it up with the ‘managers’! Let’s just say, to summarise… they showed their incompetence with the booking system, they had no people skills and they were totally disrespectful to ourselves who are local customers.Totally embarrassing situation in front of our visiting friends who had booked so far in advance.Thankfully, we phoned The Fat Lamb just up the road, and although they were full, they look after their local customers and managed to fit us in, and our evening was rescued!

I booked a room here back in June as I was attending a wedding at Eden Barn and this was the closest place I could find for two adults for one night and because we would be getting a taxi to and from the venue I didn’t want it too far away. When I received my booking confirmation I had booked two twin rooms instead of one so i immediately contacted the Kings Head via fb messenger and to explain my error and someone responded quickly and confirmed I only needed 1 twin as my friend and I were sharing. It was confirmed to me I now only had one twin room. Fast forward 3 months later we arrive to check in and no booking and no apology either. A system glitch was blamed however I suspect the person cancelling one of the two rooms I originally booked had cancelled them both. The person then proceeded to find us somewhere else to stay by using booking.com as they were fully booked. They found us a double room and told us it was only 8 miles down the road which was actually 11 miles further away from the wedding venue. I do not know the area and now we’re 17.5 miles away from the wedding venue. Then proceeded with the booking as we had no other option to trust this person and said oh just put your card details in to secure the room they won’t take payment but they did even though we wanted to pay cash but also what if we didn’t like were the alternative room was. After such a faff and cutting it fine for time and rearranging booked taxis at very short notice we made it on time for our taxi which now en route to the venue proceeds to tell us it’s £45 each way!!! To the venue. A £90 round trip. Which isn’t the taxi firms fault at all but the inconsiderate person who booked us a room 17.5 miles away from the venue.Mental note: don’t bother booking a room here.

Nothing like the menu I viewed online. After waiting 25 minutes to place order the food arrived 35 minutes later and was missing half its contents and no cutlery to eat with after asking twice. Food quality was extremely poor and tasteless and i would not recommend to eat in this pub. I feel very sorry to post this as the hospitality industry has suffered greatly in the past year but the level of quality and service was so poor I felt I have had to do so. A complaint was made when paying the bill and a reduction was made but overall a very bad experience and would not recommend to anyone unfortunately.

As a party of six, across three generations and with a springer spaniel we booked in the spring to stay across this Bank Holiday weekend. I am astonished by some of the reviews I have seen written here, as I simply don’t recognise the problems described, so if your looking to book ignore them and try these guys out. We had four days, three overnights and enjoyed the food, the friendly and helpful staff and the comfortable rooms.Anything we asked for was attended to, promptly in consideration of just how full the pub might be at any one time. Please remember readers you are reading this as we come out of the most disruptive period for hospitality trading in the last 100 years, so yes we had to be patient, as everyone had, for service when demand is peak. We were always kept abreast of any serving delays, and our food was excellent at every meal. As a dog friendly establishment everyone went to the trouble of making us all, including the dog welcome, which was much appreciated as this was the first time we had ventured to a hotel taking her along.I cannot recommend this hotel/pub enough to those looking for a great stay, good service, good food and a warm welcome. This place is a little gem, however in the midst of a pandemic, and in a country with a huge shortage of staff in every line of industry and service, bring your patience, good humour and good manners with you, as everyone deserves to be treated well. The reviews are terrible but we thought the food looked more down to earth than the more higher end food at the Black Swan which we know is outstanding. I would ignore all the bad reviews. The place was full and the attentive staff made us feel welcome and were always about to help. If not, get off your backside and nip to the bar to ask for service. They fell over backwards to help. The food including the chicken pie and fish and chips were super. Loved the jacket on fries which were healthy oven baked. A warm friendly atmosphere with lots of satisfied customers throughout the pub. Our food came within 20 minutes in a packed pub. Would thoroughly recommend.

We were happy with our room and the comfort and the pubs lovely setting. However!I’ve just read the other most recent reviews of the food and our experience was exactly the same. Shambolic service, food poor when it actually arrived from a very limited lunchtime menu but there for dinner! Ordered a fish skewer, supposed to contain cod, salmon and prawns. No cod appeared and the prawns were the size of tiny shrimps as they had been crucified and were completely inedible.Sat down at 7.15 and the food came at 8.50. It was a total disaster. Our advice, stay by all means but eat elsewhere. The staff were pleasant but completely inefficient. We felt sorry for them so decided not to complain but the Management must be aware of the situation. We assume they can’t find any staff but close your restaurant as it’s simply not good enough!

Our Saturday night experience you couldn’t have made up after booking the reservation over 10 weeks ago.We arrived 15 minutes early with no initial acknowledgement until we forced a lady to talk to us and she then proceeded to tell us ‘ you are too early so could you possibly go away?.’After saying we would have a drink before being seated that sent her into total panic but the gentleman behind the bar managed to squash us onto a table which was too small for the 6 of us.We then had 20 minute wait to order drinks…which took forever to arrive …...no menus were offered.….when we asked for them a lunchtime menu was brought,,,..we then caught a waitress to be told very embarrassingly ‘ that is the menu being used excluding sandwiches’……no wonder she dashed off……NO starters……NO deserts,…. and a choice of 3 items…..Pie fish or kebab…….not exactly what we expected for a Saturday night out family celebration. The staff were just dashing around and the atmosphere was stressful for us to even be in so a second order of drinks was almost impossible! Finally our food order was taken…..hurrah….but no…..a waitress appeared again saying there was no ‘‘ Kings ‘ fish left (large portion with inclusive sides) could we change to the basic fish and chips.Within a few minutes the stressed and flap-able lady appeared stating there was only ONE fish now left……so could we reorder one meal….what a joke! The food finally appeared but how they dare even serve it I really don’t know. The pies had been microwaved and only partially warm (obviously a supermarket brand) and they were served on a bed of packet mashed potato or chips…..the chicken kebab and chips were stone cold so we returned and asked for a fresh one (due to reheating chicken) when this reappeared what a joke only half a skewer filled with a couple of pieces of chicken and a chorizo. The fish kebab was raw salmon raw green pepper and raw red onion…..it had SO obviously been forgotten to even have been put under any heat……once we showed the stressed lady I think even she was dumbfounded! They must know they are having huge issues and I cannot understand why they are misleading customers with previewing a full evening menu and ‘fake’ pictures of meals on their website when the very least they could do out of courtesy is contact customers with reservations to inform them of the non existent choice. This is the owners livelihood but whatever the issue is I would suggest they remove the food option until such times they can sort their kitchen/staffing/menu issues out and just concentrate on serving drinks and improving their all round customer service as it is so embarrassing for the staff on the frontline…..let alone for customers. We now are laughing at our experience as it was worse than any Fawlty Towers episode with the flappable lady mirroring Bazil!

Booked a table, turned up but didn’t have our reservation when we got there. Took half an hour to even get a menu! Then we tried to order food, they didn’t have hardly anything available on the menu, then when asked to make some changes to dishes we ordered they couldn’t accommodate (couldn’t even put cheese on some chips). Once we eventually ordered our food the waiter came back 10 minutes later to say that there was even less on the menu, so that meant we couldn’t have anything of what we wanted to eat, so we decided to drink our drinks and leave. Over all we were very let down and disappointed with the whole experience, they should of let us know when we first got there that there wasn’t anything on the menu or even better not opened the kitchen and took our booking if they can’t provide the food that’s on the menu apart from 3 dishes.

I can’t be bothered detailing our experience attempting to have a meal here today. Frankly, I doubt anyone would even believe me, as it was a total shambles from start to finish. All I will say is they are clearly having problems. Whether it’s staffing, post lockdown or something else, I don’t know. But I genuinely hope they get their act together, as it’s a lovely country pub that I’ve enjoyed in the past. But it is so tucked away, it has virtually no passing trade and relies on people going out of their way to make a point of going there. Judging by the most recent reviews it’s clear we didn’t just catch them on a one off bad day either.

In the course of 90 minutes, I did all the work! So much so that I should really have got the tip. There was no evidence that the people in charge had any experience of running a pub at all.I fetched the menus after we remained unacknowledged for 15 minutes. Another 15 minutes later, I went to get drinks from the bar. A further 15 minutes after that, I went to get water and glasses. Around 75 minutes after arrival, a profoundly inept member of staff came to see if we'd had our food. Empty place settings and unused cutlery should have offered a clue. She disappeared but never returned and about 15 minutes after that, at 10pm, we decided to call it a night. An apology amounted to a wafty hand, a mumbled 'sorry' and the price of the drinks I had fetched for myself from the bar.If I were you, I wouldn't risk it. The experience of nextdoor tables was very similar.

I am not sure if the elderly waitress knew of the Victoria Wood character but when after 80mins she asked us if we had had any food our blank expressions and empty table must surely have offered a clue! When we arrived we were happy it appeared friendly and welcoming. Our room was very nice, newly done, comfy beds, good linen and spacious ensuite. We had booked dinner on our arrival in the afternoon and our booking was taken. When we came down for dinner the first thing we were told was that they had a limited menu! Limited indeed 75% of what was not an extensive menu in the first place was not available. We ended up ordering the pies but were told due to staff being off because of Covid it would mean at least a 45 minute wait! At that time we were very unhappy. What I could not understand was why was this not mentioned when we booked dinner - the answer is that they simply wanted our money and were not interested in our needs. It was too late at that time to eat elsewhere. The food was pretty poor, mash was not home made but from a packet, pie was dry and we felt very disappointed. However we looked forward to a good cooked breakfast in the morning as we had seen the pictures on the web site! We did sleep well. In the morning we arrived in dining room that was unattended by staff. I ask a fellow guest if there was cooked breakfast available, she told me no, just cold buffet. We obviously had to go for that but there were no plates. I ask for plates and waited 5 minutes for them and then we helped ourselves. The buffet was OK but not what we had expected. On checking out there was no apology for the poor service and lack of decent hot food. Nothing. No attempt at refund no acknowledgement that their business had massive problems. Sorry to write this but on reading other reviews it seems there is a thread here. We would not stay again and could not recommend it. Nearly £200 including just a couple of drinks! Fleeced.

We have eaten here many times over the past years and have never left disappointed, until today. We sat outside and ordered inside, lots of food options not available, only one option available for the children on the kids menu. Our drinks arrived promptly which was good. We waited a while for our food to arrive. Adult dinners where fine- wrong sauce for one of the dinners but we didn’t mind. Kids dinner arrived without any vegetables which was stated on the menu and the waitress didn’t mention this until I asked where they were. She went to check and said they didn’t have veg available? I asked for an alternative (eg bake beans/salad) I was told they didn’t serve beans after breakfast?? But that she would find my 3 year old a bit of salad. Another waitress turned up asking what exactly did I want! Seemed rude and annoyed that a mother might ask for vegetables for her 3 year old! Then walked off and never returned. Staff seemed unorganised and chaotic. We mentioned this when paying and we were told we should have said something!! We did!!! Sorry to say we will not be returning after visiting here for year! TERRIBLE service. The food never arrived so I can’t comment. Made a reservation for 7. Arrived at 7. Spoke to the waitress and sat outside. Ordered fairly promptly. Two cokes, a pizza and a burger. 30 mins passed. Our food didn’t arrive ( okay they were busy) but also we were still waiting on our drinks. Been on a hike and we’re pretty parched. Spoke to waitress who said the food and drinks were coming. They didn’t come. 40 mins after ordering, my partner went into bar and asked, bartender said drinks were coming up next. We waited. Still nothing. 50 mins after ordering we asked the waitress again. Nothing arrived (still waiting on food as well). ONE HOUR AFTER ORDERING TWO DRINKS AND TWO MEALS AND after watching drinks and food be delivered to other tables I went inside to get the drinks from the bar myself ( would have done this earlier, but not meant to with covid) . Told the bartender I’d been waiting an hour for two drinks. The response? “No you haven’t”. After I’d waited for an hour and asked about the status of our order his response was “ NO YOU HAVENT”. He Didn’t say sorry. He didn’t ask what time I’d ordered them. He just flat out accused me of lying. After we had been waiting a full HOUR to get drink —- this is how the owner treats his customers? When we raised the issue again and stated we had been waiting an hour we were told by the manager that we were lying. It turned out the waitress hadn’t put our order through. These mistakes happen but what is inexcusable is the rudeness we encountered from the manager. To top it off we were then offered the chance to reorder but with our food going to the BACK of the queue, potentially taking another 30 minutes. As I write this now I have just left at 8.30 without food, feeling hungry and badly treated. Best of luck to you if you are considering visiting. Horrendous experience.

I have been truly let down and unbelievably stressed because of this hotel. We reserved all 7 rooms for our bridal party for our wedding. We made the booking through booking.com. When I rung the hotel to enquire about changing one of the bookings, 2 weeks before the wedding, they informed me that my booking wasn’t on their system but was on their booking.com app. Therefore these rooms had been double booked. When I spoke to the gentleman on the bar he told me he would see what he could do. I heard nothing from them the following week so phoned again this time I was brought to tears when I was told their was nothing that could be done. No sympathy, no alternative accommodation available. No replies to further emails. Due to how booked up other accommodation is my bridesmaids and groom are now sleeping on sofas the night before the wedding. If you have made a booking through booking.com phone the hotel because it is unlikely they have your booking!!!!

We spent 2 nights here to meet up with another couple for a short break. First impressions were good, lovely picturesque location by the river with lots of outdoor tables. We were given Room 1 a double room at the back of the hotel which was very small. There was a double bed and 2 bedside tables which filled the room with only enough space to walk around the bed. No chairs or table to sit at and nowhere to put your case or hold-all. The bathroom and room itself were very clean and had been recently refurbished. Since there was only the bed to sit on we went downstairs to the bar early as had booked an evening getaway meal. We spoke to the owner/manager explaining this is not what we would expect for a double room costing £120 a night with no space for any seating area and could we change our room. This was not possible as the other rooms were booked. He did not take our concerns on board and offered no solution to the issue. That night was like sleeping in a box and even with the windows open it was claustrophobic. Breakfast was good but there was a long wait to place the order and again before any food appeared and several guests were sat at their tables waiting for the chef to arrive! We stayed 2 nights only because we did not want to spoil the break for our friends (whose room was light and airy and spacious with a sitting area and place to put their case).I was interested to see if anything would be said when we checked out or an adjustment to the bill perhaps but the attitude seems to be keep your head down and ignore it. Shame as there is a lot to like about this place

We had a recent reservation with booking.com for a weekend stay at the hotel. On arrival we were told there was no record of our booking even though I had confirmation in front of me on my phone. The chap behind the bar said he would need to call whom I assume was the owner to deal with it and he did offer us a tea/coffee whilst we waited. After 10-15 minutes two chaps arrived with laptop in hand and without introduction launched into an indepth explanation of how a fault on the interface between booking.com and their reservation system meant our reservation had not been recorded. They went into great detail about the systems and how they work (or not in this case) and showed us our booking was on one but not the other. We didn't really need the technicalities of their IT system a more meaningful and personable apology and a degree of empathy would have been more welcome. They admitted this was not the first time this had happened but seemed to think it acceptable that it was a system error and their actual words were 'all we can do is apologize' & whilst they offered to help us find alternative accommodation we had already checked this out whilst waiting for them to come & see us & found nothing at all in the area. We'd had a complete wasted journey & were understandably upset and disappointed. Had I been the owner I would have been falling over myself to try and compensate but there was no offer of a complimentary lunch or even a drink from the bar. When I suggested they weren't really offering us anything they became quite defensive. Mistakes happen I know that and appreciate that & I know what a tough time its been in the hospitality trade recently but these guys really need a lesson in customer service. I now think we maybe had a lucky escape having read other reviews. I didn't get great vibes in the place the staff really didn't seem happy in their work although the chap who we initially dealt with was as helpful as he could be I wouldn't look to return here at all. We went around the corner to the Black Swan for lunch it was a completely different experience, there was a lovely welcoming atmosphere the staff were friendly and efficient and the food was amazing but understandably all their rooms were booked and so we returned home without our weekend break.

We were holidaying in the local area and this place had been recommended by our accommodation manager and by a good number here on TripAdvisor so we thought we would book in. We arrived @6:30pm and it was busy but not rammed. We sat outside and were told someone would be with us soon. 15 minutes passed and finally someone came out and then proceeded to take drinks orders from the tables that arrived after us! It was then our turn and we placed our order. About 5 minutes later we decided it was too cold outside and moved inside, we were shown to our new seats and again told a server would be with us soon.Long story short, very slow service - 30 mins to take our main course order 30 more minutes for the food to arrive. We ordered two pies a soup and a steak. Soup was bland and overly thick, pies mushy terribly textured (pastry was nice) mash potatoes obviously reheated but had dried out too much.Steak was ordered medium - arrived well done, only saviour was that by this time I was so hungry I didn’t care nor have the strength to complain. So all in all £100 for 4 mains and few drinks, took 2hrs 10 mins from the time we sat down to the time we left and we ordered bread/olives and a main course. When we asked for the bill (our plates half eaten) they did not ask how the food was and as we left clearly underwhelmed the front of house manager would not even make eye contact or bode us farewell. We did not complain as we are on holiday and that would have further soured our experience, but I really wanted to hence the review. In retrospect, the food was forgivable - everyone has a bad day but you cover that with service and that was non existent…. Shame.

Staying at a nearby B and B, three friends and I booked to eat at The Kings Head for 3 nights. We booked well in advance. The first two nights were relatively uneventful; we ordered and received our meals and drinks. The food was standard pub fare; nothing special. The service, however, left a lot to be desired; typically a 20 minute wait for each round of drinks, difficulty attracting anyone’s attention and all orders needing to be chased up several times. Obviously, the Bank Holiday weekend plus the constraints of Covid regulations meant that the pub was very busy, so we made allowances for this, and left on pleasant terms with the staff, including the owners. On the third evening we arrived slightly ahead of our booked time, ordered and received a round of drinks. Eventually we managed to attract someone’s attention and ordered a second round which hadn’t arrived 20 minutes later. Finally we attracted the attention of one of the owners and enquired if the drinks were coming. The owner proceeded to explode in a tirade of foul language and personal insults (in front of families with children), telling us that we had been ‘a pain in the ar*e’ on previous nights (untrue, we had made no complaints) and to get out of his ‘f*cking pub’ and to go back to our campsite in a very derogatory manner (irrelevant in our case as we were not camping but highly offensive to those who were!)One of our group mentioned ‘poor management’ and he responded that he was the ‘f*cking owner’ not the manager. Even Basil Fawlty never stooped this low! He proceeded to follow us out of the pub, continuing the tirade of abuse. I have never received customer service as shocking as this.If he is proud to be the owner, rather than the manager, then in my opinion he needs to roll his sleeves up and create a business to be proud of.

To be honest the food ordered was very good. However the wheels come off when it comes down to service. The staff clearly are overworked, the food order was placed but not correctly given to the kitchen . We asked and was told the rest would arrive, so we waited. When it didn't come we had to go to the bar and ask for the rest of it. Then came the joy of talking to another member of staff to check off what we had ordered, finally after 2 hours of us being there the second half of what should have arrived together turned up. Would we go again? For the food yes, but for the service no. It put a dampener on what should have been an enjoyable afternoon in the sun.

Clearly understaffed and taking bookings which they cannot satisfy.Booked table for 6.30, told not ready and would we please wait outside and they’d be out to take drinks order. 45 minutes later we finally got a drink after asking twice and finally getting to our table.By the time the food arrived it was heading on for 2 hours - we’d booked early as we’d been out walking and wanted to eat early. The last time we visited was last August and had a similar experience. Maybe we’ve just been very unlucky but the lack of organisation spoils a good pub.On a positive side, the steak and ale pie was excellent, and the beer was very nice.

We are staying at the King’s head for the bank holiday weekend and what a treat it is!!! The location by the river is absolutely stunning and the weather beautiful ! This means that of course the pub is busy but the staff is fantastic and making sure everybody is well looked after. The Sunday service today was extremely busy and we had to wait a bit, but the food was amazing!!! So totally worth it! Would highly recommend!!!!

We arrived and ordered our food via their app and our drinks with the waitress. After half an hour our drinks arrived and after 40 minutes we received an email to say the food order was cancelled due to availability. Anything we ordered would take at least another 30 mins. We had driven 40 mins to get there and called ahead to check availability. Rather ruined our evening. Would not recommend this establishment to anyone until the management has changed.

Jenny and I paid a reconnaissance visit a couple of days ago as we'd love to stay here in the future. This time it was just a light-ish lunch after a morning's walk in the rain, and it was delicious - and beautifully presented. Jenny's share was chicken liver pate on some delicious thick-cut granary toast, with a substantial side salad. I went for the soup and sandwich combo, but one that was way better than what pubs often offer. The soup was a really creamy carrot and honey combination - less sweet than that might sound, and really tasty, topped with a watercress garnish, and the sandwich was two great wedges of lightly-toasted granary with grated mature cheese and a rich chutney filling - plus a substantial side helping of skinny fries. So much for a light lunch... Spot-on service, lots of space, tasteful surroundings, stone-flagged floors and attractive decor in shades of grey. That settles it: we're definitely coming back. If we're really lucky we'll be able to sit outside some of the time too, like on the tables in front which immediately overlook a small river. Just delightful.

Location is excellent, such a lovely corner of this area. Exterior and interior decor also good and in keeping with its age. The menu was fairly standard--burgers or meat pies etc. which is a pity, as local butchers have such good products. Breakfast was o.k.- no menu, lots of packets of sugar/sauces etc., not somehow in keeping with the general look of the place- but super coffee. The bedroom was fine, the bathroom excellent. The owner was very amiable and we do like the idea of the ice-bucket complete with pink fizz on two tables outside the entrance to entice people. We do like our food and we think that the £120 for b/b was rather over the top--more for a classy experience than the ordinary one we had.

We’d pre-booked so we popped our head round the door when we arrived and were told to sit at any table outside and they be over to take an order ... so we did just that. And then sat there for 20mins being ignored, while the odd waiter who was about chatted to the locals and got them drinks. When we eventually flagged the guy down he took our drinks and went inside, emerging back a few minutes later saying he’d forgot what we ordered and then wrote it down, with our food order. What a shambles. We could see other customers anxiously trying to get served too.The cut down menu offered a fair selection of different types of food. There were couple of tasty specials too. Our food arrived in fairly quick order and was pipping hot, which was great as it was getting pretty chilli outside. My burger was well present, home made I’d say as it was succulent and very tasty. The fat cut skin-on chip made a great accompaniment. Prices are reasonable.I know pubs are trying to sort out their outside dining experience at the moment and we’re all getting use to this new normal. But please Kings Head get your service sorted quickly and then you can rightly expect 5 star reviews, as your food is 1st class.

Two main courses of 14 hour braised beef and ale pie. Individual hand raised shortcrust pies, filled with Swaledale beef served with mushy peas, hand cut fries and gravy. The pastry was crispy not a soggy bottom in sight, the beef melted in your mouth, so tender and rich in flavour with the ale. The fries were hand cut skin on not greasy. A lovely flavoursome meal perfect for a cold winters day

We spent an enjoyable two nights at the King's Head in October, eating in the restaurant both nights. The place has a nice cosy feel to it and the staff were friendly and helpful. Our dog was made to feel welcome too which we appreciated. Face masks and hand sanitiser were readily available and we didn't have any concerns on that front (we'd been a bit worried having read previous reviews). The room was clean and comfortable although a little bit tired in places. A bit more hanging space for clothes would have been nice. The food was fine but nothing special. Unfortunately my husband had to send his food back both nights for being cold. Breakfast was good and portions were generous. We got a good deal for our stay and I think the price we paid was about right. Had I paid the advertised rate I think I would have left feeling a bit disappointed with the standard of food and accommodation on offer.

Cosy, warm pub, but still frozen food served with poor customer care. These things happen, but no excuse for poor reaction. The frozen dish (Thai fish cakes) were still on the bill, no apology from the chef and no offer of compensation (free drink? discount on the bill?). Baked Camembert was pretty good as was the house burger. Black bean chilli underwhelming and steak and ale pie also average (not the best quality steak, thin pastry top). On the plus side - nice atmosphere and the beer was good.
