The Travellers Rest in Eden

I was staying in Glenridding during the first week of March. I went to The Traveller’s Rest on the Friday evening with my dog. I checked with the lady who was serving if my dog was welcome. I received a less than enthusiastic response, but I think it was yes. I decided what I wanted to eat then stood at the bar looking at the same lady, she just stood there facing me, chatting to the locals, completely ignoring me! Needless to say I walked out, I went to The Inn on the Lake and had a wonderful meal and great service instead. I can’t say that everyone who works there doesn’t like travellers, but from my experience, it shouldn’t be called Travellers Rest with this lady serving!

This pub is in such a great location-and it is milking customers as a result! We ordered chicken burger and chips plus fish and chips. The chicken “burger” was basically just a chicken fillet slapped on a white bread roll. No dressings, no salad, nothing! Wish I’d taken a photo, it was a joke! My fish was definitely out of a packet. Nothing home made about it. But it came at a home made price!! And with the most ridiculously huge portion of chips. Presumably to distract from the quality of the fish… Bar staff were miserable as sin. Won’t be returning!!

Had dinner and drinks in here with a group of friends. The food was decent pub grub. Ideal for the Lake District. Beer is good as well. The staff are lovely. We’d go back for sure.

Flying visit for a light lunch. Parked right outside and on a freezing cold day it was welcome to sit next to the fire inside. Always a friendly welcome with wholesome food. Soup of the day and cheesy chips.

After a very long hike covering 7 wainwright peaks and the biggie Helvellyn we ended our hike in here. Lovely cosy pub ideal place to refresh

Walked in for something to eat during our stay. Very busy indeed but we found room in the bar to sit and eat. A very nice menu of wholesome pub food at great prices and good portions. Quick service at the bar and kitchen. The chicken and leek pie was worth the wait and the coal fire made for an excellent atmosphere. All in all a great place for good food, great beer and somewhere to relax after a day's walking. Muddy boots? No problem.....

This had to be one of the most comforting places I’ve been to in awhile the food was absolutely amazing service was quick and staff has loads of friendly faces I’d highly recommend fine establishment to many traveler's and locals to the area. Will not be disappointed.

Fish and chips, exceptional. Nothing negative to say apart from we would prefer our meal on a plate rather than a wooden board. My husband has a fish and chip shop and understand how fish and chips should be, but they were great, well done😁

Called in here on the off chance on a Tues eve. It was packed, we managed to get the last table, good atmosphere, the menu and special board were good, I had the Cumberland sausage which was delicious, good size portion and a fair price, the staff were pleasant, we would come again.

Was greeted by the friendly barman when taking my order. However, I have to say I think the food is extremely overpriced. Ordered the garlic mushrooms and a side of chips. The garlic mushrooms were the cheap frozen ones and for about £8 I just don't think it's really good enough. The chips were the most standard cheap frozen chips you can get, so for £4.75 I expected proper homemade chips, especially given the price and location, I just expected better quality. The service was fine and the views are wonderful. I think the food needs to be better quality unfortunately.

Brilliant setting, but after everywhere else in town being too busy to accomodate us at 5:30pm, we ended up at the Travellers Rest. Even though ot wasent very busy at all, there was a 2 hours wait for food! Yes, 2 HOURS. I have never been told to wait for two hours before at a resteraunt/pub. Very dissapointing.

Barman very disinterested. Not welcoming. They were busy and our custom did not appear to be valued or wanted. Very expensive, over £10 for a Peroni and a pint, which was not topped up and therefore not full, of IPA. No thanks, went elsewhere

Pub lunch after a walk. Pie, chips and peas washed down with couple of pints of Guinness. Unpretentious pub grub done pretty well.

Visited recently with family and a load of dogs on a very wet afternoon. Menu has a good choice , I had hot chocolate and Cumberland sausage bap , with salad garnish, very tasty . Was very busy but service was very efficient and staff friendly and welcoming even though streams of very wet customers and dogs and bikes kept on coming!!

A real Lakeland country pub with traditional food offers and atmosphere in an increasingly commercialized area. They also cater for vegans and those wanting gluten free meals. Good range of beers and spirits.

A welcome break from the rain, heated seats and a wood burner, good for quick pint and sandwich which was reasonably priced and freshly prepared.

Total gem, stayed in Glenridding for a break, numerous places to eat. All nice but kept returning to the Travellers Rest. Nice local pub at weekends, great service behind the bar, the food is good pub grub. Forget Inn on the Lake, head up the hill to Travellers Rest. 10/10!

Read a couple of reviews on the place before writing mine. Seen some folk moaning about the service, I think they're just getting the wrong idea and missing his sense of humour.The two guys serving me were funny and nice enough just a bit of banter. Anyway food was really quick to come out despite being slightly busy and it was really good too.If you've got off the boat and need something to eat this is close, got good views and good food.

The Traveller's rest is quite a way off the main road. It's location is good with views across the the far hills from it's garden. We went there for a pint after completing a leg of our coast to coast walk. The barman was unfriendly with no greeting and unhelpful. We were planning to eat there that evening but changed our minds.

We visited this pub for a drink after a day on the fells and were intending to return to eat later in the day. On approaching the bar my partner asked the server “How are you?” only to be rudely and grumpily told “Living the dream”. Anyway we went on to ask about dining there in the evening and at what time we needed to come to get a table as they didn’t take bookings. The replies were all completely unhelpful and we got the distinct impression we shouldn’t be bothering to ask such stupid questions. Needless to say they lost our evening trade.

We took the boat from Pooley Bridge to Glenridding and arrived about lunchtime for some food and a walk. We decided it was worth walking up to this pub for lunch as the town was quite busy, and were very glad we did. There was a good choice of pub grub, the order came pretty quickly despite the place starting to fill up. We sat out in the beer garden and the views were amazing in all directions. Highly recommended for the view alone (on a dry day!)

We walked up to the pub and had lunch. It was a lovely day so we sat outside . We had prawn sandwiches which were very tasty and the staff were friendly.

Lovely setting. The views from the beer garden are just beautiful. Food took a while to cook, however it was august bank holiday weekend. The food was lovely. Unfortunately I couldn’t finish mine as portions were very generous, but I certainly gave it a good go.

Good solid average pub grub, frozen not home made in most cases. Fair prices and friendly staff. But they need another chef to avoid the 1.5 hour wait for food. Dog friendly. Open when everything else is shut in glenridding Upping the food game could do wonders

A long over due visit with friends!!!!! And a very long walk for food. But the fews made up for everything. 45 minutes wait on food but well worth it for the views. After being exhausted and extremely thirty after what felt like 1000 miles and with too very grumpy children!!!!! The service and staff was unbelievable!!! Clearly the staff were run off their feet. But one of the staff went above and beyond as was kind enough to let use charge our laptops. We only waited 15 for our food which was a bonus!!! And when retrieving our laptops we left after given a local taxi number for a BNB in the area. Just want to say a huge thank you to Linda. who went out of her way to make us laugh and feel so welcome! Well done to you and all the staff despite sweating your bits off! Best in the northwest!

Can't quite believe that I first visited this pub 41 years ago as a young soldier on outward bounds training. Been back many times since and TBH, like a good wine it gets better and better. Food, as usual is good. My boy loved the Cumberland ring and sticky toffee pudding which he had both nights we visited. The atmosphere was, as you might expect from a place frequented by hikers and climbers, really friendly. But as usual it was the kindness and friendliness of the staff that really shone.....Linda (Lindy) went out of her way to find me and our lad a table and make sure we were OK. Be back soon, for sure.

Called in for a pint and a bar meal after a long walk. We were told 45 minutes wait for food which was fine and it arrived in 35 minutes. Ate in the beer garden which has a beautiful view - glorious. The Special burger and the Cumberland sausage were both really good and large portions.I would definitely recommend though hopefully once the pandemic is over they will expand the menu again to include their wonderful mixed grill.

Great beet garden but not open so just choice of indoors , not ideal on a lovely day , or staring at cars in the car park . Weird. OK service nothing great overall

OK as a pub (it’s the only one in glenridding) but disappointing as a restaurant. Long wait for food (not pre-warned), which was indifferent when it arrived. Cumberland sausage was a particular let-down.

Good pub food. Outdoor and indoor seating. Fully Covid compliant, although hopefully not required for too much longer. Fish and chips were great, so we went a second night and had burgers. They do have more interesting dishes but we just wanted comfort food! Great local beers on tap. A good homely pub. Also a great place to sit outdoors after a fell walk, assuming it is not raining.

Beer deliberately served well short of a pint, admitted by the manager who said otherwise it would spill when they brought it out to the garden. Became aggressive and rude. This was repeated for three rounds.

We popped in for a drink after a trip up in the hills and found half the beer garden cordoned off. I guess this is COVID related, but there were tables right in front of the entrance to the pub beer garden and squeezing past is surely a greater risk? The golden ale was nevertheless good....

Absolutely delightful food piping hot and fresh served to order! Has the carrot and cauliflower soup which was perfection and a piping hot fish and chips which was a large portion certainly fair for the price. Staff were extremely welcoming and friendly. Service extremely smooth and the setting beautiful.

Visited as a stop en-route to the lakes. Arrived and chose a table and was surprised to have to queue into the bar for drinks and food. I understand that during covid restrictions queuing is to be avoided and table service only was allowed. There were no menus available outside so after waiting for 30 minutes to get inside to order I had to phone my family, sitting outside to check what they wanted from the menu. Paid for our drinks and returned outside. By the time the food arrived our drinks were all but finished and I wasn’t about to rejoin the line for more. Only 1 waitress and 1 Barman on front of house on a busy sunny day. I understand it’s tough for hospitality but we paid over £50 for a four average Sandwiches and four soft drinks, Not enjoyable & sadly wouldn’t return despite the lovely views.

We only went here as everywhere else was shut until 6pm but we’re pleasantly surprised. Despite lots of people arriving at the same time. We got a nice table outside, overlooking the fells and sheep. The food arrived quickly and was tasty and affordable. If basic pub grub. Would be happy to visit again.

Lovely food. We were lucky enough to walk in and get seated within a few minutes. Got a lovely table overlooking the fields and sheep grazing. Food was lovely and tasty. Very fresh and hot. Would recommend the scampi and fish. Nice clean restaurant and all covid precautions taken seriously. Thank you for a lovely lunch. Would visit again if in the area again.

If Glenridding is big enough to have a centre then the Traveller's Rest is sited slightly away from it but well worth the extra few yards to get there. We found the food to be excellent and the Cumberland sausage was exceptional. The staff were friendly and attentive (and more than replaced the single scampi which escaped one of our plates while serving). The views from the well laid out outside area where we sat must be the best in the village. So why not five stars? Well, given the quality of everything else on our visit we rather wished someone had just taken the time to peel and cut some potatoes and turn them into chips rather than taken the frozen route. That may seem to be a little picky but it really would have made everything perfect. We will be back the Traveller's Rest though.

Staff were excellent... Food was delicious...Great outside eating area and covid safety spot on... Definitely worth the walk up the hill

Había planeado llamar aquí para tomar una pinta y comida después de nuestra caminata (no había revisado Trip Advisor antes para ver las revisiones) pero decidimos darle un giro al lugar. En mi camino más allá de la montaña, fui a poner mi piel de plátano en el contenedor de afuera y fui recibido por quien solo puedo asumir que es el propietario, me dijo que en el futuro me pidió que usara su contenedor. De hecho, pensé que estaba bromeando, ya que, sinceramente, nunca había escuchado algo tan ridículo en mi vida y seguí poniendo mi cáscara de plátano en la papelera. No estaba bromeando. ¡Entró de nuevo! ¡Estaba demasiado sorprendido para responder correctamente! Hombre extremadamente grosero. No es lo que yo llamo dar la bienvenida. Fuimos a Brackenrigg en el camino a casa y la comida, la bebida y la bienvenida fue encantadora y, a juzgar por las otras críticas sobre comida, ¡me alegro de haberlo hecho! !

Friendly staff, good food and amazing views of the mountains! Would definatley come back when in the area again.

Awful cheap over priced food? Sunday lunch hard dried beef hard veg nasty roaast potatoes. Cumberland sausage awful frozen fried cheap sausage on a bowl of chips with jug instant gravy 1 out of 10.

Cenamos aquí mientras nos quedamos en la calle en el parque de caravanas Gilside. La calidad de la comida era mala y todos son productos baratos. Pedimos pescado y patatas fritas y la hamburguesa especial. El pescado era un pescado congelado barato y la hamburguesa era como de goma, sin mencionar que parecía sacada de una lata. Decepcionado porque tiene todas las características de un pub típico de campo.El personal estaba bien y los baños estaban limpios.

Fuimos a tomar unas pintas después de un paseo por los lagos, nos sentamos y tomamos una cerveza fría en la mano en 5 minutos. Luego pedimos que nos reserven para comida durante unas horas en las que nos recibió el amable personal que nos reservó sin problemas en un sábado ajetreado. Encantadora selección de comida y especiales. Nuestra comida salió a la temperatura perfecta, sabrosa y a tiempo. Definitivamente vendría de nuevo.

Conduje hasta Glenridding durante su estancia en Buttermere. Visité aquí según las reseñas. Teníamos el cóctel de hamburguesas y gambas. Un par de pintas, muy turbio. No eran nuestra taza de té. El personal es relativamente amable. El área exterior tiene buenas vistas y hay procedimientos covid en su lugar.

La cena, ha sido en el pasado y la comida era bastante decente, pero no esta vez. Tenía salchichas y patatas fritas Cumberland, la salchicha era decente, pero las patatas fritas congeladas más baratas y los frijoles tan baratos se sentaron al baño María todo el día. Vale casi 16 no, ni por una milla.Oh, sí, parece que el covid no es un problema en Glenridding, ya que puedes compartir sal, pimienta y vinagre. ¡Las ollas deben ser una burbuja enorme! !

Had a pint of Helvellyn Gold after climbing Helvellyn (950m). It is the first pub as you reenter Glenridding and was full of fellow hikers talking and drinking about their day wherever they may have hiked.

Came for a family evening meal out in August. Main course was good quality and priced as you would expect for Cumbria. Waiters were exceptionally miserable and seemed to be going through the motions. If you are looking for a nice dining experience with the benefit of pleasant attentive waiters would recommend going elsewhere

A warm and inviting retreat after a very wet day. Friendly, welcoming staff and good food at reasonable prices.

Average food over priced with staff who don't want to be there. Give it a miss unless you have too. Hot pot was good.

Went to a traditional pub with the promise of traditional pub food for the family. Four meals coming to £70+ only to be served meals that were clearly cooked from frozen and purchased in a supermarket.Could’ve made the exact same meal for less than £15. Absolutely disgraceful.

Stopped off here with my daughter after climbing Helvellyn. This restaurant is directly on the route down as you go back into Glenridding. We had a very welcome tea and coffee as we relaxed after our climb.

My husband and I visited the Travellers Rest around 7pm on a Tuesday evening. We had to wait half an hour for 2 drinks despite there only being 4 people ahead of us in the queue.

Nice enough . Full of dogs which is ok if you like them I can take or leave them lol . Nice staff , ok pub grub menu not much for vegan or vegetarian. But I’m neither . Defo worth a visit x

Hice una excursión a Helvellyn hoy y bajé a Google para buscar lugares locales para comer, encontré este lugar y las críticas fueron bastante buenas, la comida era muy buena y las bebidas eran baratas, el camarero estaba bien, solo un poco de extraño sentido del humor no le gustó me senté junto al bar y me pidió que me mudara un par de veces a pesar de que no había nadie allí

Stopped here for a drink and the ale was really nice and so was the fire and very cosy, for the price we paid for the food I expected better, burger and chips was pretty basic. Nice location

Had high hopes for this place but have to be honest and say it was small, smelt quite odd, service wasn’t great and the food didn’t look great either. A real shame!

Burgers, scampi and fish and chips. Everything with chips. And not cheap either. Expect more variety from pubs these days

Gran pub en la ruta hacia abajo desde (o en el camino hasta) Helvellyn desde el estacionamiento de Glenridding. Elección acogedora y estándar de comida de pub, buena cerveza, variedad de ginebra y bebidas de invierno como vin chaud o sidra caliente. Muy divertido si vas cuando hay música en vivo.

Found this little gem after a long day of walking. You have to walk a little way up the hill in Glenridding to find it but it's worth it. Traditional pub with friendly service, good beer selection, great food (especially fish'n'chips and sticky toffee pudding), and a cosy atmosphere. We had dinner here twice during our holiday.

Called in mid-afternoon and found it relatively busy, menu choice was great and quality was very good. Staff were very helpful and we were served within 20 mins. A little on the pricey side, typically £11 - £15, but not out of the way by local area. Dog friendly.

Stopped here fro lunch whilst driving from Edinburgh to Windermere. A great little pub nice food and drink good range of beers friendly staff and good views.

A wet Monday evening but we decided to walk up the hill to the pub and were rewarded with a wonderful traditional pub, no frills but good service and excellent tasty English food. Friendly Aussie barman who put up with 5 middle aged females plus two dogs. We had the chicken and veg pie from the specials board and scampi. Good portions , tasty chips and five empty plates, we had been walking all day! We were then tempted by the puddings opting for plum crumble with ice cream or custard and one sticky toffee pudding with cream. The puddings arrived and oh my goodness what a size! Two boules of ice cream or swimming in custard very tasty. We laughed at the size but when the barman came to take our plates there were five empty dishes. Good job we had a walk back down the hill before bedtime as we were all stuffed! Just what we needed after a day on the fells.

A lovely country pub that we visited 5/7 nights because it was so close to our holiday cottage. The food was superb, great selection of beers and ales, and generally a lovely relaxed, comfy feel to the place. Staff were very friendly! Will definitely visit again on our next trip back in the lakes even if we're not staying in Glenridding! The lamb shank in particular was an incredible meal! Thanks again!

I went twice during my long-weekend stay in Glenridding. I really liked it as a place to sit and recover from walking and touring the area. Friendly staff, great menu of typical pub food and home-made puds. It’s up a hill, so if the weather is nice you can sit outside to admire the views of the fells on the other side of Ullswater. Inside is quite small, maybe take 25 or so, but there are extra covered areas outside (in addition to uncovered seating) if it gets busy. It was moderately busy on the two evenings I was there 6 to 8 pm. Great 50s 60s music in the background, not too overwhelming unlike another place I went to in Glenridding. A group of six people had booked a table but I didn’t get the impression you had to do that, just turn up. I’m no expert on beer but I really liked the draught Helvellyn.

Always enjoy a visit to the Travellers Rest anytime we’re in the area.

After a day on the fells a group of friends and I fancied a pint of real ale so decided to pop into the Travellers Rest, at Glenridding, as we came off the hill.

Great location and atmosphere. Got an iffy pint which is fine, but barman refused to accept the point from 3 of us so had to buy 3 more. Guess he got the extra sale, but can’t help feeling like going somewhere else next time

Came in here on Saturday for a quick pint and a burger before we head up onto Place Fell. The woman who served us was very friendly, amazing service, food was lovely. Great atmosphere. Sat outside in the warm sun. Perfection. Thanks guys

We were a bit dubious about eating here so ordered the natchos - there's not much can go wrong with it, or so we thought. We were served a bowl of Doritos covered in cheddar and put in the microwave. It also came with a bowl of salsa from a jar. It genuinely spoilt the view.

Went here for dinner when staying in the area, lovely little pub, rustic, and great food. Thanks to the staff and chef for a pleasant evening

Visited while camping and was not disappointed. Food was lovely on both days. Proper pub food ! Good quality and reasonably priced ! There is limited space in the main part of the pub but there is a good out building which is warm. Good service and friendly staff. Very dog friendly. Find it from the village following the signs up the hill!!

After a night of camping, my partner and I were on our way back to our car and noticed a sign up ahead saying ‘Breakfast served here’. We headed into The Travellers Rest and ordered a full English and a vegetarian breakfast. The quality and portion size was great, and it was the best breakfast we’ve had in a very long time. Would definitely recommend.

Great weekday evening with great beer and live music. Shame about the kids playing loud videos on their phones though

Food was good pub food, price wasnt as bad as expecting for the area. We didn't see anyone in the place that looked unhappy with their food and we didn't see any sign of the miserable staff some people have mentioned in there posts. We would definitely go back again.

Camping at the site just 500 yards away, we called in here a couple times, genuine old time pub, serving local real ales and great food, inside is full of character with a lounge and bar, and seating outside, dog friendly well worth a visit if you're staying in Glenridding and a must if you're camping at Gillside Farm Campsite...

Arrived at Glenridding and was looking for a place to eat so followed signs to The Travellers Rest. Restaurant was full so went over to Pub side to get a table but it felt very tight and a little uncomfortable so we opted to sit outside. There was a covered space outside with tables and this was pleasant as it was cold outside so we were shielded from the wind.

The Travellers Rest is advertising full breakfast from 8am. We went today 3rd July 2019 expecting a lovely breakfast at 9pm to be told that breakfast is only served in the summer!! Extremely disappointed. Is the 3rd of July not summer? Their advert/ board outside the pub should clearly state when available! Anyway had a FANTASTIC breakfast at the Inn On The Lake hotel.

Came recommend for food whisky we were in the area. I had the special, chicken curry chips rice popadom, £11.75, seemed a bit steep, curry was ok but the chips we McCain. Wife had a ploughman's, which in fairness was nice with 3 types of cheese.

Just walked Helvellyn and we were starving. Called in here as first place we saw with food. Food was good, and a lot of it, but the experience was spoilt by the lack of cleanliness. I have seldom been in a grubbier pub. Staff helpful and pleasant - a shame - the cleaners need to up their game!

This pub is very nice and very welcoming, we called here for a meal on our last night and the food was very nice and definitely worth every penny.

The service was slow and the food terrible. I had what then appeared to be a vege burger which was steeped in oil and put half in a pitta bread with lettuce. All for £13! With some poor frozen chips and coleslaw like it was from a carton. Terrible.

After a day on the fells you cannot beat The Travellers for food and beer, if it’s a plateful of food you need this is the place and you definitely won’t go home hungry

A group of six of us enjoyed an evening meal. Good menu and well cooked. Comfortable and not too crowded on our visit but it was a Sunday. Would certainly return

Éramos un grupo de amigos que habían intentado escalar a Helvellyn para ser honestos, ¡un clima asqueroso! Desafortunadamente, debido a las condiciones, nos vimos obligados a abortar nuestra caminata hasta la mitad del borde swirral ya que era demasiado peligroso para continuar.

Tuvimos un almuerzo tardío mientras esperábamos a que abriera nuestro alojamiento.

We visited on Saturday evening - the pub is just a few minutes walk from Gillside Farm campsite where we were staying ready to tackle Helvellyn the next day.

Great beer, especially the IPA. Young bar man is really friendly and pub is very welcoming after a long day walking the hills.

Stayed in Glenridding for a week at end of Feb 19. Went to Travellers Rest as group of five adults. Pleasant helpful staff. As we were mid week were told we didn’t need to book. When we got there they had put a reserved sign on the table we had indicated a preference for “just in case”. The menu is on a board above a (very) hot log burner. The food arrived in a very reasonable time. Without exception all five meals were of exceptional quality, a real cut above usual pub grub. Portion control seems to have gone out of the window to the extent that we all very glad we hadn’t ordered starters. Add to this decent ale and very reasonable prices ,all in all brilliant “real locals” pub. So many pubs are now restaurants that serve beer as an after thought this most definitely is a pub that just happens to serve particularly good food. So good in fact we went back a couple of nights later. As an after thought I would recommend booking on a Friday night as the place was rammed out of season with walkers and climbers arriving for the weekend.

Stopped for a beer after a very cold walk. Log burner in bar was very welcome, she'd a few layers while having a couple of very nice real ales. Staff friendly, menu looked inviting so will return for food another day.

Whilst walking in the area we called here three times for a couple of beers (Brim IPA). This is a lovely typically British pub, the staff are really friendly, the food looks good (although we did not eat here on our visits) and it has a really good atmosphere. Well loved by walkers its on route to or from Helvellyn and is dog friendly. It has two seperate bar areas/rooms as well as a conservatory and an outsde seating area. Its a 5/10 minute walk from Glenridding town centre (up the hill).

We seen the sign stating dog friendly so thought we’d give it a go... really wish we hadn’t! The barman made us feel like we were imposing upon him and his bar. Asked for a bowl of water for the dog and was told to go outside, asked if it was possible for the fire to be lit as it was a freezing cold day and was told to go to the other room... finally when the food arrived we were given dirty cutlery. Awful from start to finish couldn’t wait to leave. A note for the bar staff, a smile would go a long way and be accommodating to your customers as we were the only people in!
