We dined in Bustro 1871 as part of a short break holiday at the Appleby Manor Hotel. What a lovely break this was. Our first after the Spring and Summer lockdown. The food was really good and the waiters attentive. Appleby Manor itself is a delightful hotel full of old world charm. We are returning there again for my wife's birthday in October. I shall again dine in Bistro 1871 as well as sampling the gourmet restaurant at the hotel on our second night.

Had a overnight stop over for a birthday party the table was pre booked the restaurant was just about full it took around 25 before we ordered and drinks arrived, the food itself was nice overall the only issue was the portions very small for the price of them, an example was the goulash as a main the price was around £15 and it came in a small round dish with no salad or bread or anything 😬 don’t get me wrong I don’t mind paying for anything that’s worth it just left some of us a little hungry The hotel itself is a very nice period place and would recommend a stop over just wish the kitchen would give a bit more for your £ Staff were nice and friendly also

After an excellent spa day last year, courtesy of a TravelZoo deal, my friend and I decided to treat ourselves again - but to stay overnight this time. Despite some problems (entirely self made on my part with the booking!), the staff could not have been more helpful, changing things round for us before we arrived in order to suit our needs. Our twin room was a decent size with plenty of space for "stuff" and two chairs to sit on (so much nicer than always perching on the bed), a kettle and plenty of tea, and a local guide. The hotel guide in the room is a little dated though... We were given a brief tour of the facilities on arrival, and decided to eat in the bistro for dinner - advised to book, we were fairly surprised to turn up at the alloted time and find it almost empty, but no matter! The food was tasty and well priced, and the service was good. The dark chocolate tart was to die for! After dinner, we made ourselved at home on the sofas and played "our version" of trivial pursuit, drawing several other guests into the fun! The waitress came through from the bar to sort us out some drinks, which was a nice touch. When we wanted extra hot chocolate to make in our room, Mark on reception was able to sort that out for us. A good night's sleep, a great breakfast, and we headed to the spa for our TravelZoo day (yes, another one. We like a deal!). Some reviews seem to suggest that being "on a deal" leads to subpar service. This was genuinely not the case at all. There was no point where we were made to feel less because we had paid less. Lunch in the bistro was delicious again; our massages were great; we left happy. Our only mistake was not staying for longer. We'll work on that.

We booked at table in the bistro for my Mum's birthday meal. After arriving at the hotel we were asked to sit in the lounge area. We were not offered a drink and sat there for around 20 minutes before being approached by a waitress who gave us some menus. When ordering I discussed, in detail, the serious allergies that I have. The waitress was helpful and explained that she would pass on the information to the chef. I ordered the vegetable tagine with rice. When the food arrived my meal was served with couscous instead of rice. I have a gluten allergy as explained when ordering so was unable to accept this meal. The food was taken away and I was told it would take 5 minutes for my food to be returned. 15-20mins later my meal arrived by this time the three people I was eating with had finished their meal and I was feeling extremely uncomfortable. I am extremely vigilant when eating out and pleased I noticed the mistake. The response from the manager was 'sorry'. Perhaps the offer of a drink or for all the meals to have been brought back at the same time might have made me feel better but I found the manager uncaring and not that bothered. Maybe the management should take some advise from their waitress on how to deal with customers. Despite the food actually being very nice I will not be returning to Appleby Manor due to the terrible customer service we received.

Whilst staying at Appleby Manor we ate in the bistro rather than the restaurant, mainly because it has a less formal atmosphere. The food was of a very high standard. In particular the ' Mac & cheese'. Enjoyed it so much as a starter on the first night that I had it as my main the following night.. Chloe, who served us both nights was very informative, she knew the menu well and provided a relaxed but professional service throughout. Highly recommended. Mr & Mrs Simpson

Was not very impressed with the Bistro, especially after reading reviews about how good it is. First we arrive to the restaurant and there is no one there to take us to our seats, 5 minutes someone eventually comes and takes our order. Had to repeat our order 3x to the lady, the couple that came in after us had their meal before us, even though we ordered first (exactly the same meal) waited 1 hour 10 minutes for our food even though it was not that busy, eventually came out and it was wrong! Was offered to take it back, but at this point I was starving so ate it. Was not really happy with the service.

We stayed at Appleby Manor and chose to dine in Bistro 1871 as part of the deal. We had 3 course meal which was £25 each - what a fantastic offer, everything on the menu was included within the deal - including the Steak which was £21.95!! Starters - Chicken and Duck Liver Parfait & Smokey Bacon Mac and Cheese. Mains - Appleby Manor Chicken Curry (not too keen on this, lacked a bit flavour and the chapatti was funny tasting) & Char-Grilled Sirloin of Cumbrian Beef. Desserts - Sticky Toffee Pudding (omg, one of the best I have ever tasted) & Appleby Manor Strawberry Sundae. Overall a fantastic meal, only thing we would have changed was the curry but again this is down to personal preference, I like my curry spicy and this was not. We would defiantly eat here again if staying in the hotel...if paying full price, the portions would need to be bigger to satisfy us.

This review is a bit of a fraud as I didn't actually eat in the Bistro! I had booked for the Bistro but on arrival at Appleby Manor, on a grim, snowy Cumbrian afternoon, I was advised by the hotel staff not to do so; the Bistro was "pretty cold" I was told. Would I like to eat in the lounge instead? The lounge fire had just been banked up and the logs were spitting and crackling away behind a screen. It looked inviting and was. The lounge has a fine gallery, comfortable seating and was warm! More logs arrived, as did the menus and a place setting. So began a thoroughly enjoyable couple of hours. The starter had to be warm on such a grim day hence butternut squash soup which came with some interesting tasty breads. Next up was goulash, sadly not something that appears on many menus. This had chunks of good tender meat, vegetables by the ton and a topping of layered roasted potato. Rustic it might be and hardly subtle but it was smashing. A glass of house Merlot accompanied it - not cheap but the right choice to drink by the fire.Yet more logs for the fire and a sticky toffee pudding as a sweet. I thought the portion ungenerous but was quite wrong as this was a rich version of the STP - more would have been hopelessly indulgent! A pot of coffee, which was generous and came with with some noteworthy biscuits, to finish and then out into the Cumbrian bleakness. I left ready to face anything that the weather could throw at me.The bill wasn't small but it was a memorable meal. The waiter, Liam by name, was cheerful, efficient and moved at great speed between kitchen, restaurant and lounge. He still had time to tell me proudly that everything was homemade and knew his menu intimately, which many waiting staff don't seem to do.All in all a cracking lunch.

My partner and I returned to Appleby Manor as we had a great time the last visit. But unfortunataly we did not have the same experience this time, we ate in the bistro and both of us had stomach trouble after, even though we both ate different food. We told the receptionist on booking out and the response was not at all caring her reply was that no one else had reported the same problem, we got questioned on what we did after the meal, did we had gone straight to the room or go to the bar, this made me feel like she did not believe us. I cannot praise the rest of staff enough they were so lovely and very helpful but the meal was the let down, in fact the bistro was a let down there was only one member of staff who popped in every now and agian. I asked for water but did not get it. I don't think we will be visiting again which is sad as we love Appleby and the Manor.

We stayed a the hotel for a couple of nights recently and dined in the restaurant one evening. We had the pate starter which was very nice but nothing special. We ate from the bistro menu rather than restaurant menu but were seated in the restaurant due to the small numbers of people dining there that night I guess. There was little to no atmosphere but the service was good and staff friendly. My daughter had the fish and chips, it was fine but the thick cut chips were too thick or undercooked. I had the beef bourguignon and was quite disappointed, it was thin and watery, tasteless and had a lump of potato on top and no vegetables or rice. Absolutely not what I expected from such a lovely looking place, it was quite pricey too.
