Stopped off on the way back from Old Basing house for lunch. The service was very good and the food was as well. We had the fish and chips off the main menu, and it was very good. Just one comment was a member of staff cleaned a table behind us and used so much spray on the table we could taste it We parked opposite the church as the pub doesn't have a carpark, but there is parking across the road as well

This place is a must visit. Seldom has a body of staff been so friendly and welcoming, from remembering that we got lost to personal food recommendations. Everything is as a pub should be, the staff even managed to find my husband a portion of his preferred desert. Good beer selection, same with cider and I suspect wine is good too, you just know. I had the burger, excellent choice, and the others all had the roast lunch, they really enjoyed it too. A local pub making everybody that enters feel local and welcome. If I were local I would return time and time again, lucky you who do live close enough to return.

My wife and I are visiting local pubs and restaurants on a Friday night to experience their fish and chips. This place is in the top third, but could be a little better with not much effort. The chips we had were not fresh and a little dry, but the fish was good and presentation OK but lacking a little finesse. Good size portions. Friendly staff and very welcoming.

Another excellent supper at the H&G last evening, the Sri Lankan fish balls were divine and Simon’s bream was apparently delicious 😋 Other regular diners (says a lot about a place) agree that there are numerous reasons we love the H&G and the food and service are at the top. It’s so good to see such a mix of people enjoining the great food and buzzy atmosphere - this is what a village pub should be, families and friends relaxing with their dogs enjoying life and eating great food in a village pub.

Great food and service. Very noisy atmosphere with a child and a dog running free around the tables. Great food has to be enjoyed in a relaxed environment. It doesn't matter how good the food is if the ambiance is punishing. It's worth avoiding and that's a pity that all the hard work is wiped out.

This is a pub in transition under the new owners who have made a success from the get go in August with great food. The Landlord Lucky is the chef, and his wife Lisa is a great host. This is my local and it’s been busy since they arrived… still needs lots of work to improve decor but the food is excellent. Had a family Roast yesterday and it was lovely with great service. Started with. Home made cauliflower and Stilton soup and followed with the beef… lots of veg too… the full works. Because it’s been so successful and busy I suspect it’s proving hard for them to get on with the decor … in between a full compliment of diners and beer drinkers ! This is becoming a 1st class local 👍🏼

We went here as a family gathering for lunch and to have some food. We were quite blown away by the selection of food, so many good options. I had a lovely bowl of mussels, which were really good. Not many places do mussels, especially pubs, so I had to seize this opportunity. My group had their starters too, which they enjoyed like paté and camembert. For mains, I had a massive burger, which I enjoyed so much that I forgot to take a picture. For dessert, I had a delectable sticky toffee pudding that again I again forgot to take a pic of. I just want to shout out to the lovely lady server we had that went out of our way for our child and got a special strawberry on top of their ice cream, which my child loved. The service was great. We loved the atmosphere. We will definitely be back.

We decided to visit here for a change as haven't been for a couple of years..certainly wasn't dissapointed! Greeting was very friendly and welcoming and a drink brought very quickly while we perused the new menu. Quite a lot to choose from - both light bites and main and certainly a good choice for vegetarians for a change. Opted for a delicious goats cheese on toast, with egg, pesto, pine nuts and watercress ... lots of taste there to tickle the taste buds. Mum opted for a traditional ham egg and chips...a 'plate plenty' for the hungry! we decided to treat ourselves to a sweet - well...apart from the tasty traditional puds like apple crumble, sticky toffee pudding, and cheese a board - there was a baileys Brulee, and a white chocolate and raspberry cheesecake! Made on site, incredibly tasty and beautifully presented with a chard of chocolate on top ...Its the tastiest, lightest and not sickly sweet cheesecake i have had in a long time - and I travel a lot!! The pub we were told had just been taken over, and we certainly will be visiting regularly, lovely pleasant and friendly staff and pleasant, comfortable surroundings..very good and reasonably priced food. Well worth a visit. Thankyou.

Of two pubs I visited in Mortimer, I much preferred the Horse and Groom to the Turners Arms. Not much between them for beer and looks; but the staff at the Horse and Groom–two women–were friendly; and the landlord at the other pub was chilly, obtusely so. A good atmosphere makes all the difference to me.. The Horse and Groom is a small, bright, clean pub. Patterned carpet; varied seating, and cosy spaces. Quite a few in, creating a convivial vibe. Timothy Taylor’s Boltmaker’s very decent.

Food available was provided and cooked the Mortimer Sausage Company who were Bbq all day long . We chose a cheese burger and a hotdog quite tasty ...Emma and Dan moved around pub to check on all punters ( all abiding by guidance) . Dan came and spoke to us quite a bit and regaled stories of his adverntures with his friend Ross ( he sounds such a character) . Whilst the atmosphere was busy and buzzing, with very attentive friendly staff, the food was lacking in imagination. It was a limited set menu, which was no problem considering the occasion. There was a shared starter which was quite large but mostly all battered. Our mains were Very bland. I had a dry colourless chicken breast, with No sauce or gravy, chips, hard carrots and over cooked broccoli. The other meal was steak, chips & veg. OK but you had to pay extra if you wanted a sauce. The pudding was also a shared selection which was minuscule compared to the starter and hardly enough for two. The new landlords are obviously working hard to improve this pub, but they will have to Up their Game in the food department.
