Serving a breakfast in a cardboard box is enough to put most people off, but the contents of the box just confirmed it. I literally couldn't cut into the sausage - the plastic disposable cutlery wasn't man enough for the job. Gutted we missed the services before but Watford Gap was sadly destined to be. Curious to try out their Halloumi Burger and was sadly left feeling like I ate a whole bunch of nothing. The halloumi in of itself was 1 thin breaded slice within a fluffy brioche bun that had mushy avocado and sliced mushrooms in it. More halloumi may have made each successive bite a bit more palatable. To the side of this pretty looking burger were onion rings and chips. 1 or the other would do with a salad or so but not friggin' carbs on carbs. Even pots of sauces did little to help me swallow those bland onion rings and french fries. Fueled up sure but these taste buds have been left disappointed.

After a busy weekend on business in London, I decided to stop here on my way back for a bite to eat. It was approx 5:45. I saw they did a Halloumi Burger, waited for the server to come out and placed my order when he did. “Can’t do that” he mumbled. No apology. No explanation. Upon asking why, I managed to force mumbled information out of him that it was because they stop serving burgers at a certain time, due to something to do with the oven. Not entirely sure what as it was difficult to understand the sullen replies I was eking out of him. If this is the case, why can they not have some simple information to say “burgers served till xx time” like they do with breakfast. Not rocket science is it? Then I would not have been forced to have a most unpleasant monosyllabic (on his part) ‘conversation’ with the staff. More staff training and more customer information would go a long way and should not be all that difficult to implement. It’s a good job we have choices as there are many other places I will now favour above this unprofessional establishment, whichever service station I’m in.

1st visit to this service station for a over night stop. Services here are very good. Ample parking for hgv and showers are clean, modern and hot. Staff in WHSmiths are friendly. As a hgv driver you can get bored of McDonald's on a regular basis so for a change I used the FRESH FOOD CAFE. Initially the 2 young lads who served me were friendly and helpful. One asked if I wanted hot food and took my order. The other got my mug of tea and took payment at the till. Service was quick and food did not take many minutes to arrive. Now this is where the review of FRESH FOOD CAFE falls off the cliff. The main strap line on the signage says...." Freshly prepared Great taste " Freshly prepared it was not....Great taste.....I was relieved the young lad gave me extra sauce so I could mask the stale taste! If you start with fresh ingredients how can it go so wrong?? The chips were OK although small in portion but the rest was awful! Bacon was over cooked, dry and stiff. The egg was over cooked and crispy around the edges. The field mushroom was over cooked and shrivelled and baked beans were on the verge of being dry.Value for money this was not at £7.29 for the main meal. The mug of tea was the best part of the whole experience. If I stay here again I will AVOID this cafe and so should you. I'll have to default to McDonald's next time...at least you know the quality is always the same and consistent.

For one , the word Fresh should be taken out of the title. I ordered Scampi and Chips and 2 children's burger and chips meals , thinking that ordering from here would be a ' healthier ' option than from McDonald's but was I wrong! The Scampi and chips really small portion , chips cooked to a point where you would find it hard to eat due to the hardness , but wot I found astonishing was I asked for the kids burger to have a basic salad put on to which they agreed but when the burger turned up i was told they didn't have any salad. So we ended up with 2 overcooked burgers which looked like they had shrunk by 2 times its original size dwarfed by the oversized buns. The food and 3 drinks came to £22If it hadn't been for the hunger of the kids I would have DEMANDED my money back.I don't normally give negative reviews but I felt compelled to do so in this case. FOOD :After paying pretty much £10 for a black coffee, breakfast wrap and a very small chocolate brownie to takeaway, I was expecting something half decent. FRESH FOOD is defiantly what it's NOT! They use the most tasteless, cheapest, nastiest ingredients going. You can tell they come from a bulk bag straight from the freezer. After a couple of bites I was done, and into the bin with it! They say they use Lavazza coffee, it certainly didn't taste like it! Either they use cheap coffee, or their machine needs a good clean! STAFF:I have never experienced anything like it.The young "lady" who initially served me, starting pouring my coffee in a china cup. I said "sorry, could you put that in a takeaway cup, thanks". With that she started slamming things down, throwing things about, giving me dagger looks. I couldn't believe what I was seeing, I only polity asked to have my coffee put in a takeaway cup!! She then accused me of calling her deaf, which I absolutely did not! Even the other customers stood around me were stunned! I explained that's not what I said at all, anyway she didn't want to know and stormed out back! To be honest I think she knew I didn't say that, but just wanted to play up and storm off. All in all, after reading the other reviews I think Roadchef should be ashamed off themselves . So why did we blindly go in expecting things to get better?Inside the service area it was bad. There is a distinct lack of management and supervision. The Fresh Food Cafe was terrible! The sandwiches were poorly constructed and lack good flavour. The hot panini was a appalling. The base was soggy, the filling of cheese and tomato consisted of a thin layer of plastic cheese and 3 slices of sad tomato. The manager and the 'chef' (who prepared food with no protected clothing) showed very little interest when we pointed out the poor quality of the food and service. However, the toilets were reasonably clean. I didn't visit ffc on the M25. In fact, I used to work at that place and it is the most messed up place I have ever seen. There are many problems on the inside that you all don't know about. So I'm going to list all the problems that will hopefully keep you away from this place.1. Sandwiches So the sandwiches are supposed to be made fresh everyday. To not waste money, they keep the food for an extra day which is common BUT many times I have closed the shop and found sandwiches that should have been thrown out the night before. And what's worse, when they are made, sometimes they use out of date ingredients.2. Hot Food QualityI have heard a lot about the terrible quality of the food. Both in taste and presentation and you're not wrong. Some of the staff like to rush in playing the food which makes it looks like it belongs in a bin but get this, the taste may be because they leave the food on the hot counter. Yes, this is common but they have left bacon or sausage on the hot counter from breakfast. 7am is breakfast and I've found bacon on the hot counter from breakfast at 3pm. Disgusting. And the worst thing is that they follow the 5 second rule. The myth where you drop food on the floor, you have 5 seconds before its contaminated which is, of course, false. But one thing some people wont know is something that hits irony. Fresh Food Café should be called Frozen Food Café because all food is cooked from frozen.3. Cooking of the foodNow if you have seen MacDonalds, they have separate grills for everything they do. Clackett lanes FFC has two grills and normally, only 1 is used. Fish, chicken, chips, potatoes, hash browns etc. Are all mixed in the same fryer. And this leads to the next point4. AllergiesNow they do have an allergen guide but they don't follow an order correctly. I have been on a shift where someone had egg allergies and a colleague took the order for a breakfast brunch with no eggs. It took the customer 3 attempts to get the order changed before I was able to step in, make the food without egg and gave them a free drink for the trouble.5. Customer Service and ManagersThis was the worst part for me. Some of the staff, mainly kitchen are rude, horrible and do not care. Many arguments were caused between till staff and kitchen in front of customers starting from mid 2015 all because of a new staff member we got who, to my knowledge, is still there. But which is worse is the manager. She is the most horrible and hypocritical person I have ever known. She is the reason why a lot of the staff look depressed. Many, me included have been relentlessly bullied and attacked with the threats of being fired. I have had an experience where she said that a customer who was complaining, where behind their beck, she said, "I want to knock the ******* out" and if you have a complaint, good luck. She is normally hiding somewhere smoking.I luckily don't work there anymore but please, do not eat there. There are many other problems but I wanted to state the issues on the inside that affect you, the consumers.I hope this has given you an insight to why the place is awful.

Well, after being served the most overpriced, driest jacket potato and pulled pork I had ever seen. (Honestly I could have thrown it against the wall). We were met by rude staff and no refund. I wouldn't even feed my dog with what we were served. Mainly because I like my dog. There is however a young gentleman who served us who was really quite friendly and the fish finger sandwich was alright. I wouldn't eat here again

You have a choice at the anti-clockwise Clackets Lane Service Station: a noodle bar, a fast food outlet or The Fresh Food Cafe. Well we chose the latter because it has an appealing name - but it certainly doesn't live up to it - and I'm not surprised that so many of my fellow reviewers had a similar experience to mine.I ordered sausage and mash and my wife ordered mushroom soup. After a lengthy wait, the server arrived and put down a plate containing flattened mashed potatoes and three small sausages and disappeared. "Hang on a minute", I thought, "I'm sure the menu said 'with peas and gravy'". So, I went back to the counter, pointed to the menu and said "Where's the peas and gravy?". The woman very reluctantly went and had a meaningful discussion at the kitchen hatch and came back with some peas. "And the gravy?", I asked. "We havn't got any." she says - and then she insults my intelligence: "There's been a change of menu but they haven't updated the menu boards" Oh, really! Who ever does sausage and mash without hot onion gravy?Shortly after this my wife's soup arrived - not in a bowl, but in a plastic cup like you get for a small coffee. She removed the lid to see a grey gelitinous mass half filling the cup. It was clearly a soup like Campbells which needs to be diluted, but obviously no-one had trained the kitchen staff in the art of dilution. I checked the menu again and noticed the soup was served 'with a bread roll and butter', although none was in evidence.I didn't complain again as I was sure there had been a 'change of menu', but I decided to warn my fellow travellers of the delights they can expect from this 'Fresh Food' Cafe at Clackets Lane.My advice is: stop at Coham Services or wait until you get to the Darford Crossing.

Arrived from long trip from South America wanting a good full English breakfast and made a BIG mistake trusting the Fresh Food Cafe, The food ? was awful , it was over priced and looked and tasted like it came out of the bin. The woman who took our order was so slow and dead pan that people waiting behind went across to Mc Donalds , i only wish we had. Awful experience ,aah.

Not a great lover of outlets on Motorway services, and I should have known better, but fancied a bacon sandwich, it was cold, fatty and the roll was dry, overpriced food - poor quality - staff uninterested, learned my lesson don't buy food at services.

Chicken Tikka from the Fresh Food Cafe.Me and mon compagnon had just got back from France, normally we bring our own food to motorway service stations, but we'd got a long way to go, it was dinnertime and we were hungry for a hot meal.Mon compagnon could smell the chicken tikka and said "That's what we're having."She wasn't wrong.Staff at the Fresh Food Cafe were friendly, professional and efficient. The tikka was good. The naan that came with it was very good, warm, fluffy and melt in the mouth. We left no popadums.Good value too, we got the "buy two for 12 quid" offer. Outstanding for a motorway services.

I am surprised at the other reviews, I have eaten here twice, in preference to Mickey D's. The first time I really enjoyed my falafel and mushroom burger. On the second visit I persuaded sir to give it ago. We shared a fish finger sandwich, which came with onion rings and coleslaw. It was more than enough for two and we really enjoyed it.The coffee is Lavazza, but didn't score highly with sir. I just had a bottle of posh fizzy pop, it was a little warm.

I visited this place recently with my wife & son who naturally went for a McDonalds breakfast so all good there. My wife & I went for the Full English at the fresh Food Cafe which serves anything but fresh food. What can I say the customer service was diabolically bad no manners, none of the normal up selling (it would have been refreshing interaction). The food arrived & the freshest thing we ordered was the toast, the bacon looked like it had been reheated several times before & was completely in edible, the Sausage was obviously deep fried & again reheated so many times it could have been used as a hammer, the mushroom just said 'don't eat me or I will get my revenge & you will be sat on a toilet for many days to come'.All in all just avoid this place it's just vile there's not one redeeming feature about the place use McDonalds or Costa at least you know the standards are good.

Stopped briefly at Clacketts Lane on our way back from Brighton to the West Country . For some inexplicable reason I decided that I would like a beef burgher . There was a long queue at MacDonalds so went to the Fresh Food Company and ordered two burghers and two cups of tea . It should have sent alarm bells ringing when a tea bag was placed into a mug , off the boil water was poured over the tea bag immediately followed by the milk - obviously giving the tea bag no time to discharge its "tea". £2:30 was charged for one mug . We were told to sit at a table and the burghers would be brought to us . After approximately twenty minutes ( unfortunately , for the company , the time of order is printed on the ticket ) there was no sign of the meal . Other people , who had arrived after us , had come in , sat down and been served . I went back to the counter and queried our order with the girl who was tidying shelves as there were no other customers . Her English was not good but she managed to communicate to me that burghers took a long time to cook . Despite the fact that other people had come in after us and had received what looked like equally elaborate meals . After 30 mins I went up again and was told the meal was still being prepared . After 35 mins ( checking the time on my ticket ) the girl brought the meals , dumped them on the table and left - no attempt at an apology . The burgher bun was soft , greasy and unappetising ; the lettuce inside was soggy and greasy ; the burgher was tough , lukewarm and greasy as were the chips . I ate the meat part of the burgher and left the rest . My husband was similarly unimpressed . No wonder there was a queue at MacDonalds !

Called here for a quick lunch on our journey down to the south coast. It is a very busy service station, but this cafe looked the quietest and most healthy looking so we went there. We had lovely jacket potato and a sandwich and latte which were served quickly to us, the girl even offered to bring the jacket over to us when it was ready, which was really quickly, really enjoyed the lunch, but a bit pricey I felt. I would want to say this was a "good" rating but you don't have this category. Would go back.

I don't normally write reviews of negative experiences but after a bacon bap from this place I must. No butter dry as you like bacon with more fat than meat. Some how the bacon is cooked while the fat inedible chewy almost raw. I feel sorry for the cook , do they think their bacon rolls are good? Or more likely I think they just don't give a monkeys. I'm watching the three staff now chatting away no customers to serve while mcdonalds gets all the customers. Come on guys do better !!

On route from the airport to home after 3 weeks in the U.S we were looking for some lunch. Tempted by the glossy exterior and the offer of 2 meals for £12 we went for the fish and chips with mugs of tea.Front of house Frank was most welcoming delivering the food to our table which suggested that it was actually being cooked for us.The fish together with its coating of inedible batter was unbelievably bad and I would suggest not fresh for it had an aroma about it. How can a highway service cafe get a simple meal like this so wrong. The chips were clearly frozen and not a lot better than cardboard although in fairness I have never eaten the latter! The fish with its coating of inedible batter was simply disgusting. The tea incidentally was acceptable.

I'm on the Roadchef mailing list which means I periodically receive 2-for-1 offers for their service station outlets. So on a recent trip down the M1 to Luton Airport we visited the Fresh Food Cafe at Watford Gap for lunch. I ordered the fish & chips and the good lady had the burger. The serving staff didn't seem to have a clue what they were doing. It took five minutes to charge me the correct discounted price and then took around 20 minutes to prepare what should have been fast food while I stood around waiting. I didn't have very high hopes for the food at this point. But when we eventually tucked in... we were gobsmacked.I'm told the burger was really good and my fish was really fluffy and tasty and cooked to perfection. Apart from the 30-or-so chaotic minutes from ordering to receiving our food, the proof of the pudding really was in the tasting and the 2-for-1 offer made it a hearty and reasonably priced lunch.

It looks like a fresh healthy alternative to McDonalds but it's not! The strap line is freshly prepared and great taste both of which seemed wholly false claims. Scones had fake sweet cream, stale and generally very poor, the burger was tough and dry and they didn't provide any onion rings but didn't tell me that until I paid and sat down and offered no compensation or alternative. Terrible, please avoid disappointment and don't ever order anything cooked from here. Drive on or stay hungry!
