The Earl of Clarendon truly is Sandgate's hidden gem. The interior is of a cosy old-school type that is sadly increasingly rare; the view from the tables outside is beautiful and peaceful; the gentleman who served me (the landlord I presume) was polite and friendly; and the beer range includes Courage Light, allowing one to enjoy the rare treat of a refreshing light & bitter. This is my kind of pub. I look forward to returning and urge anyone reading this review to visit.

Saw the sign for pub on the beach road. Went for dinner with family. No one behind the bar. Waited still no one. Only 4 people eating. Looked around the back for service. Stuck my head in the kitchen door to ask if serving dinner. Gentleman shouted at me to get out of the kitchen. I asked if we can sit for dinner, he said no only if booked a table. I said you have a sign stating you serve food. His reply was I have no staff. Two small kids to deal with to find another restaurant for dinner. Very disappointed.

I was in the area and popped in for a quick pint and lunch. The landlord was amazingly friendly, the beer was spot on, and as for the food, well, what seems to be a simple dish was presented wonderfully and tasted so fresh and flavoursome. The only mystery about this place is why it was so quiet on a Thursday early lunchtime. Definitely worth the walk up the steep path from the sea front!

Friendly little pub. Cosy setting and good range of beers which change regularly and refreshments. Best roast dinners on a Sunday lunch! Been going for many years now and never disappoints. Popped in here Saturday for a soda and cider, as it was a really hot day and was walking the Kent coast and needed some shade. There was a ten pound min card charge and had no change, so didn't end up staying but the pub was beautiful and the lovely lady filled my water bottle as I was parched. As a northerner who loves traditional pubs, what I will say is make a B line for this place if you like old, traditional, quirky British boozers. It looked fab! I said to the lady 'this must be lovely in winter' and she corrected me rightly with 'its lovely any time of year'. I agree. Soon as I'm back in this part of the world, I'll make sure to spend a day/evening here. As I sat outside, drinking the cold water and lapping up needed the shade (I'd walked from Dover), a couple of the neighbours came up from an afternoon swim we got chatting. When I mentioned the credit card issue, they offered to give me some cash for a drink, which I thought was unbelievably lovely. Obviously I declined but still, very sweet. Kent is a lovely county and so are the people. Can't wait to get back to this pub and spend an evening there. For fans of a good boozer, don't miss this pub. Seems a hidden gem. Beautiful Victorian Style (not original) balcony which is a lovely feature. Update Aug23* I got back to this pub and sat with Ron the owner for an hour. Incredible beer and he mentioned he mostly tries to source and serve local breweries (Sussex/Kent etc). He's been in the trade years and gave great insight into the workings of the brewery trade and the changes and challenges they have faced as landlords. You should ask him about his days working on the Dover/Calais boats! Super interesting. His beer was kept impeccably and his prices are great. Can't recommend this place enough. Oh, and ask him about Ozzy if you get the chance 😂

Truly a hidden gem - the food and service were so good we went back a couple of days later. The food is all home cooked and freshly prepared. On our second visit one of the menu options wasn't available, the owner was very apologetic and said if we'd rung to book earlier he could have let us know what was available - our fault for descending on the pub without warning. The fish of the day (sea bass) was absolutely delicious, the lamb very tender, the lasagne scrumptious, the variety of vegetables were perfectly cooked and the desserts were fabulous.

We have moved to the area and were looking for a good local so thought we'd try this pub for drinks and lunch. Wish we hadn't bothered. Unfriendly atmosphere and drab decor but worst of all was the price. We ordered 2 pints of soda and lime ahead of ordering lunch and were charged £7.20! This is easily the most expensive soda and lime i've ever had and it wasn't even fresh lime juice but rather a fairly cheap tasting cordial. We decided not to give then our business for lunch. Certainly off the list as a local. Our advice, go to one of the many other pubs in Sandgate as allare better than this one.

Well it hasn't changed at all, which is a good thing, this little secret squirrel pub on Brewers Hill used to be our local many years ago, and was hosted by a French Lady, who, when she could be asked often produced delicious meals. So last night met some friends back to the area for a couple of drink so we thought we'd see if they'd do an early meal and rang ahead. What a joy we did, the most excellent sea bass, I used to catch sea bass just down the hill when I was young, so in my mind this tasted as good as back then lightly grilled with sweet potatoe fries, and a mix of green veg, asparagus, sugar snap peas, green beans and brocolli, what a pleasant surpirse, so much so we stayed late, got tipsy and forgot to pay the bill... (came back next day and settled with apologies).

We visited this pub earlier today & never again! The 'welcome' from the scruffy landlord was very half hearted to say the least & then when my wife asked for a taste of one of the beers on tap she was told 'we don't do tasters' & had to listen to a long winded reason for that & how he could lose a thousand pounds a year if he did provide tasters! All I can say is the reasoning for not providing tasters is that customers would realise how poorly kept his beer is! As Camra members we appreciate being able to taste before we buy & know how well a beer is kept! I wonder why we were the only customers!!!

Our server was amazed that we could eat 3 courses as people apparently rarely did due to the portion sizes - she had obviously never come across a slim Yorkshirewoman before who was starving!!!!!This isn't pub grub, it is restaurant quality and we will be definitely visiting again soon.

The Earl of Clarendon – SandgateDate of visit – 81 August 2015The Friends of the Mole Hash House Harriers chose this pub as a venue for one of their runs. About 15 people turned up and assembled outside the pub on the public area. Not many people ordered food but those that did had to pay at the time of the order. The publicans – a miserable couple – were somewhat abrupt which was surprising when Monday night is often a quite night in a public house and here we were bringing in good business. When we got back from the run (about 9pm) and went in to the pub for our food the tables had been laid up and we were told in no uncertain terms where we were sitting – one of our group wanted to sit at our table and was told ‘no, that is where people who have ordered fish and chips are sitting’ – very odd as what does it really matter where one sits to eat ones food. Maybe it was just the end of a long day! The cost for 3 people - £26.85The food was ok.No car park but there is parking available on the sea front. There is a very steep climb to reach the pub.Would we visit there again – not likely unless there is a change of management!

We gravitated to this pub as our son in law, having given up his ticket for the Spurs/Man City football match, he could watch the same on tele here. We really only wanted light lunches (well most of us) and the menu was full and varied which always bodes well. There were some errors in delivering everything ordered but that may have been a communication error. The premises are best described, without being nasty, as a little tired BUT the grub made up for that - Delivered piping hot (albeit in two deliveries) we left the pub replete. warning to the les able bodied among us, access is by foot up a fairly steep hill - I say this as one who has breathing issues. The draught cider (Somersby's) recommended.

Was welcomed by a rather sullen lady behind the bar that when asked if they were ok with dogs just snapped back 'as long as they're on leads'. Not a great start. Then snapped at for letting a small child near the bar. I accept that was my bad but this didn't exactly add to the less than welcoming atmosphere. To be fair there was two locals sitting in and they were more than friendly, but this wasn't enough to offset the grump serving us.We drank our drinks and left, never to return.Oh and this place is not easy to find, tucked away up an alley way.

It is well worth walking up the traffic free hill from the seafront to the pub which has tables outside on the hill from which there are views of the English Channel. Our dogs were especially welcome. A must for any visitor to Sandgate.

Absolutely amazing food! One of my favorite places to eat out with my family. Big portions for little money, great value and a cosy atmosphere.

Unbelievable foodYou need to book as only 1 sitting People came in without booking and we're rude to the landlord when he could not fit them in

The four pumps are aways different and change for a new beer after each keg: fantastic rotation. (I'm a little surprised the décor isn't exclusively pumps labels already, kinda like The Alehouse in Reading). The locals are part of the experience- very welcoming. By your third visit, you'll probably be a regular too and on first-name terms. They also show football and rugby without having become THAT kind of place.A pub Orwell would be comfortable in.

What a fantastic little pub. The Landlord and Landlady are very friendly. The Beer is well kept and reasonably priced, could even have a third of a pint. As for the food - well just Brilliant- we could not fault it. Will definately be returning.

Located up a small side road on a hill so not easy to find, but we had researched the area and other reviews so knew about it. Small but pleasant and obviously used by locals but not made to feel out of place. Extensive food menu - I had grilled fish of the day which was was amazing - huge plateful! Wide range of drinks and bar snacks and friendly staff.

Me and a friend popped into this very empty pub and I asked for as taster of a beer that i had not tried before only to be screamed at by the landlady. At first we just stood there aghast but she carried on screaming and we made a hasty retreat. This person was the worst Land Lady i have ever spoken to who certainly does not put her customers first.

It's been a while since we last ate here but nothing has changed still excellent food and beer!Five of us went here last Sunday and when we arrived at 12.45 it was packed, do not just try and turn up for Sunday lunch you won't get in!!We had booked the week before and we took the last table. The roasts are always beef, pork & lamb and between us we had ordered all of them they were all fantastic with veg and roast potatoes to die for.We were all really full but the puddings were just too good to miss so chocolate sponge pudding, apple tart, lemon meringue pie & a basic cheese board were all fabulous !The lady behind the bar was serving drinks, waitressing & sorting bills out almost on her own but without making anybody wait very long at all "really well done!"We all said we will be back sooner rather than later oh and I nearly forgot the landlord not only cooks but keeps some of the best ales in the area!Well done the Clarendon keep it up!Kind regardsPhil & friends.

Ignore any bad comments about this unique pub. It offers great value for money, a choice of very reasonably priced, immaculately kept cask ales which change on a regular basis and generous portions of home cooked food. My partner and I went there for an evening meal, the Barnsley chops had run out but were replaced by no less than 5 loin cutlets which were cooked to perfection. I can recommend the Earl of Clarendon without hesitation.

Popped in for a nice pint and was spoken to like dirt, I was completely taken aback by the landlady's attitude.

Had a fantastic lunch today in this hidden gem of a pub. One of our party had a beautiful piece of haddock with good quality veg and potatoes dressed in samphire. Another had gammon steak and two had scampi. Would have liked to have sampled the puddings but we had no room !!! Found the pub by chance but would advise others to deliberately seek it out. You will not be disappointed.

We called in on a Sunday lunchtime and what a gem! A very warm welcome from the staff and locals. A very good selection of real ales that changes regularly and I believe the pub is in the good beer guide. What's more was that there was a good selection of free nibbles on the bar! It's only a small pub but still has a Bar billiard table inside, have'nt seen one for years. It does get busy but as it's off the road there's plenty of room outside, with some cover. If you are going for Sunday lunch you will need to book.We went back to eat later in the week and were served good pub grub at reasonable prices. There is no vehicular access so you will have to park and walk up the hill but it's well worth it, one of my favourite pubs!

Visited weekday lunch, we both ordered rib eye steak(11.95)Steak was huge and came with chips, mushrooms, onion rings grilled toms and peppers, lettuce and peas(I would have omitted the peas) I ordered my steak rare and the meat was good enough to eat rare, Very impressed with the quality. presentation great, Chilian merlot only average but coffee excellent. We loved it and the last time I visited the Sandgate Hotel I had to send the steak back , go to the Clarrie.

Caffe La Delizia in Folkestone is a must-visit! The café is perfectly situated in the town center, offering a cozy and inviting atmosphere. I enjoyed a delicious milkshake there and was impressed by the friendly and helpful staff. The café is a great spot to grab a snack or meal, and they even have charging points for your phone. Highly recommend!

Place was dirty, last persons food all over the floor. Food arrived at different times for each of us, was cold in some cases and the staff didn't wish to engage with any complaints even when food was missing. Went elsewhere in town and will not return again.

There's a good choice of drinks (we called in for a coffee and a speciality tea). our drinks were freshly made and served by very friendly staff. We did not have any food but there were plenty of choices and what we saw being served to the other customers looked very good. There's seating both inside and outside (very dog friendly outside) with nearby pay and display parking and clean toilets.
