I usually got to Coughlans all round really and often go to their various locations around Croydon and Catterham. Surprisingly the other day I bought a drink and a sausage roll for my mid morning snack, when I bit in to the sausage roll, I can only describe it as some sort of string. I then returned it. I decided to send the following pics to there head office, I was not after anything, however was insulted by the owner who sent me a measly £5 voucher, not only did it ruin my snack that day, but was insulted so I sent it back. Coughlans in Purley. No prices on items in store, unable to take cash (£20 note) so paid on card. The item was only just warm. The till showed £3.35 and I just tapped my card on the reader that was held out to me. I didn't ask for the machine (which was being held by the server to check or a receipt, my mistake. I thought that was for 2 large sausage rolls but apparently not. My bank confirmation came in at £6.70 Way too expensive for me, Greggs for me next time !!!

Having previously tried their mushroom pastry roll here which I did enjoy, I thought I would try some of their sweet bakes. The jam filled doughnut was okay at £1.10 but their new apple and toffee muffin at £1.90 was stodgy and just badly executed in flavour in my opinion. It was touted as being a new-in ‘Halloween’ product but just failed the mark - though it did look great. This is sadly a typical London bakery…….I can’t wait to go back to Paris where they really know what they’re doing.

I have lived in caterham for nearly 50urs and used Coughlans as my lunchtime snack back in the days of going to De Stafford School. We always loved their Tomato soup and a sausage roll but not any more. Sausage roll cold and couldn’t even cut when trying with a sharp knife! Tomato soup cold! Pasties cold and barely no meat in it - what’s happened Coughlans?!?!

Had the shortbread £2.95, tasted strange, looked at the ingredients and full of e numbers, artificial preservatives, colouring, palm oil and made with margarine. The same with the chocolate cake, why such a long list of artificial ingredients? Never again, over priced for food containing poor ingredients.

I have to say that it was nostalgia that brought me back to the Caterham-on-the-Hill branch. I could hardly believe it was still there on the corner after 30 years. I was apprehensive and didn't want to spoil the memeories I had of the place but I was pleasntly surprised. The display was just as inviting! The sausage roll and jam doughnut I bought were both very tasty. It's just a shame I live so far away otherwise I would go back more often.

I ordered a birthday cake ( rainbow drip), for my daughter’s birthday. This was at the new branch in Selsdon. The cake was stale, absolutely terrible. At the time of ordering, I was told personal details could not be inscribed on to the cake, but this could be done separately. This wasn’t done. I went back to complain about the cake not being fresh, and at all levels up to Mr. Coughlan himself, I was made to feel as if I was lying. They insisted I returned the cake. I explained it was a kids birthday party the cake had been cut to little pieces for the kids most of it has gone. Some taken home by the kids as it was cut as they were leaving, some actually wasted. A few of the adults complained about it being stale. Anyway I was told to bring back what I had left which I did. Mr coughlan accused me of being factually incorrect, and told me I brought back only a bit of the cake and so he hopes the kids enjoyed the cake. Honestly, I didn’t know what to say!!! Let’s just say our conversation went downhill after that. He offered me 30% off my next cake. Am I really going to be ordering another cake from them? Or even go in there for anything at all. After insisting I had to bring what was left of the cake back, so it could be investigated, I was told the amount of cake I brought back wasn’t tangible. I returned at least a quarter of the cake. The rest had been cut obviously to serve the guests. I was not expecting the need to provide evidence, by asking everyone who had cake to return it. I was told at some point that my husband, who picked up the cake, and signed for it, had accepted the cake was to our satisfaction. We obviously don’t get to taste the cake until it’s cut. Just appalling all round. I’ve never written a negative review my whole life, for anything.

Have been in various Coughlans over the years and always consistently of the same standard...which isn’t always a good thing. Certain things like doughnuts, etc are fine, hard to go wrong with things like that. Their pasties, which my husband does enjoy, I do not. I find the inside to be a bit of a brown indistinguishable gloopy mess. Some of their other hot pastries with bacon, etc are more edible in my opinion. Now onto their biscuits, in particular their kids biscuits I would say are not good at all. While they always look very nice in terms of decoration, the flavour is terrible, somewhat artificial tasting. The only thing I can think of is maybe they use shortening in their biscuits instead of butter? Now Incase someone is thinking it’s me just being fussy, it’s not true. I have four children with the youngest being 2 and none of mine like their biscuits! My kids have a sweet tooth like I do but on the few occasions I have bought the biscuits thinking maybe they will be better this time, I’m always met with disappointing looks on my children’s faces admitting that they don’t like them after having tried a couple of bites. I then try it and agree...again with a weird artificial flavour. In future I know to avoid the biscuits! At Christmas though they usually have some yummy chocolate rum truffles in the shape of Christmas puddings and the bread is fine. The staff by the way are usually fairly friendly so no complaints there! Over all, I’d say it’s an average bakery which I feel is a bit over priced for the quality of the product.

Have tried them off and on for a year or so now in the hope that a 'traditional bakers' in Caterham would improve...it hasn't. Paid nearly £17 for a crusty roll (sandwich filling which was probably the worst I've had), filled baguette, couple of bags of crisps, drinks and a pasty. I honestly don't mind paying a little extra for good food, but this was just awful. The bread rolls tasted like something that had been frozen!A real shame that such a large bakers in a prime location is that bad and expensive! If you want a really good sarnie, travel the extra mile to the Village Bakers in Whyteleafe, or even head around the corner to the co-op as at least their pre-packed sandwiches have some flavour!!They save themselves the lowest rating as at least the pastries are half decent and the coffee is reasonable.Bring back Addisons! ;-)

This review is actually for the Coughlans Bakery in Coulsdon , there is no place for this on trip advisor but as I really need to express my opinion I will have to write it here. About a week ago my mum bought me back a cheese and onion pasty from your bakery , as I went to bite into it .. It was absolutley boiling hot and burnt my mouth it did not cool down for ages even after 20 minutes it was still piping hot! I'm not saying I want my food cold but I also don't want it to be scoldering hot to the point I can't even consume it! Inside the pastry (which was also burnt) was a strange mushy substance which I certainly wouldn't relate to CHEESE AND ONION. It was so hot in the end I couldn't even eat it as this mushy substance was seeping out everywhere. If my mum hadn't told me it was cheese and onion I wouldn't of even known what it was ! It was also ridiculously priced at 2.50 ! I will not be returning to Coughlans as it was DISGUSTING.

Ok so this isn't a restaurant, a fast food place or a greasy cafe, its a bakery but what a great bakery it is and that is why this place needs a mention. Coughlans has the usual bakery offerings i.e bread, cakes and sandwiches, but it has a nice seating area inside and out, so I wandered in and decided to eat in. The hot pastry food looked really tempting, but I decided to have a sandwich (the choice of fillings were really good) and a cup of tea. While I was deciding what filling to have I noticed a fantastic choice of cakes too. The service was great and the sandwich was well presented and full you defiantly got your monies worth. While I was eating I noticed how busy it was at the counter and how efficient the staff were dealing with everyone quickly and politely. Once I finished up my lovely cup of tea I decided I wouldn't be able to leave without purchasing one of those cakes (it would of been rude not to!!) so I did and I wasn't disappointed. It was so refreshing to visit a place like this and avoid the main stream coffee houses which are over priced and sometimes lacking in a friendly atmosphere, the only problem is I don't live local enough to enjoy Coughlans more often.
