Chef De Mumbai in Dover

This is as authentic as it gets. Tucking into that lamb biryani was like being transported back home to Mumbai in India…..packed with flavour and cooked to perfection. We also had the Vada Pau and the Pani Puri both served so beautifully and once again 100% authentic Indian street food. Having lived in England for 20 years and tried gazillions of “Indian” restaurants all over the country I can genuinely say Chef de Mumbai is the only restaurant that truly delivers for taste as well as for Indian hospitality (the owners were so welcoming). Thank you so much for an amazing evening!

Went here for dinner with 6 of us 4 days ago. 5 of us have been sick as a dog since we went. Shame really as the food used to be good. My mother has been laid up bed with sickness and diarrhoea for days. My gut has been in agony ever since. I will never go near this place again. Their hygiene standards are a disgrace. I am considering reporting them for this. Give it a wide berth. Also the food was pretty bland and tasteless. Absolute let down.

Our party of three have all lived in India. We avoided the Indian restaurants in Deal because I have always found their food a bit bland. We weren't disappointed.. Jenny was excellent at gauging our tastes, and the food was very good. Service fab and efficient. Food spicy and flavoursome. Breads delicious. Makhani dhal yum. We'll be back.

From the moment we walked in, we felt so welcomed. The owners, the waiter, and the cooks were all incredibly kind and full of warmth. They were smiling the whole time, playing with our 1-year-old daughter as she ran around the restaurant, and even gave her a toy—it was such a sweet and thoughtful gesture. The food was just as wonderful. Everything we had was full of flavor, and you could tell it was made with care. The naan was probably the best we've ever had, and all the vegan dishes were delicious—rich, fresh, and perfectly spiced. To top it all off, they let us stay overnight in our van on their parking lot, which was a huge help.

My husband and I visited this evening and are so pleased to find a really good authentic Indian restaurant on our doorstep. If anyone has been to India as we have you will appreciate the menu which includes many street food items as well as Dosa and Thalia on a Sunday . The food was amazing and exquisitely presented . You can watch the chefs preparing your delicious food which is served by lovely friendly staff. We can't wait to come back.

Wonderful restaurant! We came here with the kids as a last minute dinner plan on a Saturday night and the staff were amazing, as was the food! All the dishes we had were so flavorful - especially the tikka paneer, railway lamb and naans.

A great place to eat. The owner is very helpful if you’re not sure what you’re getting & he can tailor the food to your liking. The prices are good as well. I have been back several times myself.

We had a really great experience here a few nights ago. The food was fantastic - super flavourful and a bit different compared to the usual fayre. The staff were more than happy to suggest dishes we might prefer and cook them to our preference too! They even made a special - off the menu - rice dish for a member of our party, which was very kind. I'd thoroughly recommend giving them a try and we won't hesitate to visit again. Ps the Railway Lamb is to die for.

Went here for a meal yesterday and it was one of the best indian meals we have had. Everything was presented really nicely and the staff were really helpful and friendly. We had the tandoori broccoli n gobi and the crispy potato and onion bhajiya to start and a paneer tikka masala and goan prawn curry for our mains. It all tasted really fresh and delicious. Would also highly recommend the chilli cheese naan. We will definitely be back!

Our first time here and we are sure it won't be our last. The food was amazing, I was suggested to try something different instead of my usual Korma and I was very glad I did, the staff looked after us very well and were extremely welcoming. We both agree that this is the best Indian we have ever had and would recommend to others to give them a try, they aren't far from us either which is a bonus. The food is very good and tasty. There is no fancy fanfare about the resturant but you can feel the authenticity of Indian food. The owners are very friendly and hospitable. We visited the restaurant early in the evening, but the time we left it was already half full! It is a popular indian restaurant in that area.

Had a very good meal here. The railway lamb was delicious. Service was good and polite. Child's dish was abit hot. I get its a curry but when the child's dish was hotter than my chilli squid starter it's a tad much. My child shared off our plate however and also enjoyed our food.

The food is incredible, the service is amazing and the fact you can stay over in your motorhome is an added bonus....... we're already planning our next visit in the spring 😊

1 star is 1 star to many. Probably the worst curry I've ever had. The korma was more like sewage water and was tennis ball green in colour. Binned it and got a kebab Horrid

After a hugely disappointing curry from Deal last week, I had all but given up hope of finding somewhere to satisfy my craving for my favourite food genre. Luckily, my daughter had talked me into picking her boyfriend up from work in Dover at around 10pm so we had a couple of hours to kill and decided to look for a restaurant between Deal and Dover: Tripadvisor to the rescue. This place came out highly rated and was actually on the road we needed to take, so double bonus…. As long as it lived up to the reviews. Plenty of free parking, although in the dark I managed to drive past the car park entrance and had to spin round at the roundabout. Pleasantly greeted and seated immediately. Drink orders were taken and I got the chance to try a pint of their draught IPA, which was very refreshing. If only it were summer! The menu at first caught me by surprise. I’m use to seeing a list of the standard British Indian Restaurant menu items listed with a choice of protein plus a few ‘specials’ to choose from. For the first time in a while I was forced to actually read the descriptions, as the dish names were largely unfamiliar to me. My interest was piqued! My daughter just moaned as she has to put a bit of effort in. After the obligatory popadoms we munched and waited to see what delights our chosen dishes would bring. I chose the chicken dalcha as I loves my lentils, and my daughter went for the paneer tikka masala. We added some pilau rice, saag aloo and a peshwari naan. My mouth was watering as the dishes turned up. Presented in small pans, the aromas led me to dig in before my daughter could do what all 20 somethings have to do, photograph what they are about to eat, perhaps as evidence if they don’t make it through the meal service. My first impression was that there was none of the unnecessarily sweet first taste that most curry houses feel they need to provide. I’m certain that many places also add msg, which again, I didn’t detect. What I did find was the delicate spices that came through the gravy. The chicken, unlike my previous experience from Deal, was high quality and not overcooked or rubbery. I could have taken a little heat and I’m sure they would have obliged if I’d asked. My daughter’s tikka masala, which of course I had to try, wasn’t artificially sweet or bright red - two of the reasons I won’t eat it anywhere we usually visit. Just great flavours and I detected a hint of lime. I may have been wrong. The potatoes were well cooked and flavoured and the naan was buttery enough to satisfy anyone. Service was friendly, something free that many places seem to have given up on, and I had a very interesting conversation with whom I took to be the owner regarding how nice it was not to have my tastebuds overwhelmed by added sugar. There was ample food and we were both pleasantly full, with enough left to take with us so my daughter’s boyfriend got supper too. Great value for money. We have 12 days of our trip to Kent left before returning to Spain and I found myself looking through the menu to see what I’m going to try when my wife and I eat there next week. She doesn’t know it yet, but she’ll be driving so I can enjoy more than one pint of the excellent IPA.

We were on the pitch in mid-November. This is attached. Very tasty food and super nice owners. If you eat in the restaurant, the overnight stay is free. Great place if you want to get to the ferry in the morning. We say thank you to the nice and friendly hosts. We'll definitely be back

Nipped in on the way back from a football match to pick up a takeaway, food was very quick, price very reasonable and tasted very nice, with plenty of it. Will definitely be going back.

Used this restaurant for our 50th wedding anniversary , very good service and food, unfortunately one thing spoilt our evening, we was given a voucher by our daughters for £100 to celebrate, upon receiving the bill which was for £84.00 we was offered no change because they said it was due to it being paid by card, instead we was given a tiny bottle of wine and a bottle of beer, I suppose this was a form of compensation, I think this is a bad practice for such a nice restaurant, I think that the sixteen pounds they gained was nice for nothing, I would advise to not buy vouchers for this venue unless you have money to give away, apart from that we did enjoy the food, shame about the problem with the payment.

We had a lovely meal here but one thing spoilt our evening, our daughters had given us a £100 voucher for a meal here, upon finishing our meal we were given a bill of £84.00, we showed the voucher but was offered no change, we was told that because it was paid by card they couldn't give us any change, we were given a small bottle of wine and a bottle of beer, I suppose this was supposed to be compensation but I do not think this is good practice for such a good restaurant, also we do usually give £16.00 tips, shame this was the only thing that spoilt an otherwise lovely meal.

I have visited the Chef de Mumbai twice now while staying overnite in Dover ready for the early morning ferry..you can park up your campervan or motorhome for free if you eat in the restaurant. Jani gives you a very warm welcome and is extremely pleasant and helpful. the food is fantastic and the taste and flavours are a delight. I had the chilli squid to start and it was superb, just the right amount of heat and super tasty and cooked to perfection. my main was lamb rogan josh with pilau rice and a chilli garlic naan and this was so good with the lamb just melting in you mouth. an Indian IPA was my choice of drink. The staff here are so friendly and polite and I find it very interesting as you can watch the chefs cooking your food…overall first class and this will be my no 1 destination whenever I stay overnite in Dover…

Real indian tasty dishes in a very nice ambiance. Succulent pieces of lamb and chicken, really mouthwatering food. Not really cheap but 100% worth the money.

Chance led us here. We were looking for a place to stay overnight for our campervan. We were allowed to stay here, and it goes without saying that you can stop here for dinner. The ambience is rather functional, but clean. The service friendly and attentive. The food, we had the Murgh Makhani at £10.95 and the Chicken Pepper Marsala also at £10.95. As a side dish, rice £3.95 and Garlic Cheese Naan £4.25. The prices for the food are okay. However, a pint of Peroni here costs £7.40. I found that very expensive. Nevertheless, my rating is top! The food is incredibly good. You have the open kitchen in view the whole time. The work here is professional and clean. An absolute recommendation for us. We will be back. Thanks for the place to stay overnight 👍

Don’t be put off by the ex-pub feel. The food, devine, don’t think of this place as just another Indian restaurant, see the extra touches to give the food flavour, pomegranate, star aniseed, to name but a few. Me and my boyfriend came here on 18th September whilst staying in Dover and the food was amazing we had the chicken chettinedand chicken murgh makhani they were delicious, service was really good, highly recommended 👌 we will definitely be coming back when we visit again.

What a little find this was. We had a warm welcome and shown to a table. Lovely staff both very friendly. Ordered our food the poppadoms were lovely and hot made in front of us as were the naan breads. Our starters and mains were outstanding full of flavours the tastes were delightful. We will return on our next visit

Tonight we had a perfect meal. Starter.... somosa and papedam, main ....two fishcurrys with rice and garlic nan. Kind service and coosy atmospheer with a lot of people on this saterday night. We have our campervan on the parking and leave tommorow with the ferry.

So we went there in the evening after a long day of traveling. It was the best Indian food I ate after such a long time. The staff was so kind and the food arrived very fast. You can actually see how the chefs prepare your food in an open kitchen. It was a very nice and highly recommended experience in the city of Dover. And if you eat there, you can also stay one night at their parking place for free, wich is a real nice insider tip for all the campers.

Welcoming atmosphere, really lovely owners. Great service and most importantly very tasty food! We will be back :) Also For a Wednesday evening they had a few tables in which was nice as it’s a very large restaurant. Hopefully they will continue to do well/keep busy and with a freshen up of decor in the future, it has a lot of potential!

We were visiting Dover from the US and found this restaurant. We can't say enough. The food was tremendous and the service was exemplary. We give it the highest recommendation.

We stopped in for lunch last Sunday. It was very quiet which is a shame because the food is excellent and the service is good natured and professional. The lamb biryani and sag paneer were especially good and nicely presented too which isn’t always the case with Indian food. A truly enjoyable lunch experience.

The food was great. It could be that Indian food in Britain is spectacular in general due to geopolitical decisions in the prior 200 years, or it could be that the food is actually that good compared to the competition. I don't have enough experience in Britain to ascertain that. But, it was certainly better than any Indian food I've tasted in either America or Germany (again, my experience is relatively limited). It could be other countries, such as India itself, have better food, but I have yet to find it. The place could be a bit cleaner though, hence the star removal from "Atmosphere". But, do beware: If you have a dog, and the pet crematorium is active, they may be able to smell it. We couldn't stay overnight camping in the parking lot because my dog acted as if the devil himself were in the air (inside the restaurant, she was fine).

We came here on a Sunday night just after having arrived in Dover and it wasn't quite easy to find a place that stayed open until later in the evening. We were very happy with our authentic dishes and the kind and fast service at Chef de Mumbai and the food was good value for the money. Would definitely recommend (:

This is a fantastic gem of a restaurant. We went there for a family sunday lunch. The owner and staff were brilliant. The food is authentic indian, mumbai cuisine. You will not be disappointed by the food. Will be back next time and play some carrom too.

This was our second visit in our motorhome prior to crossing the channel. The lovely owners were very welcoming and the food was as amazing as last time. This is an amazing Indian restaurant. We went there after our Ferry journey back from Europe. They took care of us really well, very attentive staff and authentic Indian food from chef from India. They use fresh ingredients and can cater to your taste. Highly recommend this place.

Stayed here overnight in their carpark, just up the hill from ferry port, food was good staff pleasant nights sleep was good.

Food made from scratch with fresh ingredients. No artificial food colouring used. Extremely flavoursome. Although located in an old Inn and therefore constrained in layout, do not be put off as the food and service is excellent. Offers overnight Motorhome and Camper Van parking too for free. Highly recommended for food, proximity to Dover ports and an overnight stopover

I definitely don't recommend it. The food was very tasteless, either the cook had a bad day or it was standard for them. Worst Indian food restaurant in GB.

We stayed overnight in our motorhome in the car park which felt quite safe. Restaurant staff all very friendly and welcoming including to our dog in their dog-friendly area of the restaurant. Food was excellent and tasted fresh and a notch above the average Indian restaurant. Overall, no complaints and we will be back the next time we are passing through.
