Cafe Nouveau in Mendip

The owner is a great host. I've regularly enjoyed a great customer experience here. I'm usually with one of a number of close friends, sometimes we cycle, sometimes dog walking but whatever the activity it usually ends up here for, the relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere, great food, the lovely space, which includes to the 'patio' area. Simple bacon and egg butties, breakfast to a generous selection of (100% home made) cakes and wide selection of teas. I'm welcome as a, cyclist and dog walker. It's a bit of a meeting point and family spot too. This has always been one of my favourite nearby cycling stops near by Frome. Much of the food is 'home made' and I've never regreted trying anything at Cafe Nouveau. You'll most likely be served by the owner yet whoever takes the order you'll have a reliable friendly service. What a hidden beauty! Fan bloomin tastic food & cakes, all made in-house, lovely locally roasted coffee, fab vegan hot chocolate, chai latte, etc. Staff are brilliant, friendly & welcoming, venue is petite & gorgeous, with views across the lake & safe country walks. French doors to patio for outside eating too. Such a great find! We found our new favourite place to stop for breakfast or lunch, and just 5 mins from Sainsbury's!

So refreshing to find a hidden gem where the owner fully understands intolerances, such as did and gf and better yet to have the variety of choices of food, both savoury and sweet which are beautiful and so tasty. Well done Cafe Nouveau!!!! Xxx

Absolutely stunning location . Next to park and lake , with great terrace . Best flapjacks and rocky road I have ever eaten . Lovely lady who owns it , makes all the cakes herself , and serves with a smile . Had to buy extras to take away . 😊

Pork burger was absolutely tiny - took up about a quarter of the bun. Atmosphere was a bit creepy.

Meeting a friend after a too long break, cafe Nouveau was the obvious location. All three of us thoroughly enjoyed to chat, banter, lovely staff, outstanding food and even got to meet the chef. Superb, top marks, Gold star, excellentay. Thank you for helping make our visit a memorable one. 👍💞✌️

Lovely breakfasts and gorgeous cakes! Good sized portions and well priced

Hallumi and vegetable panini was excellent as was the hot chocolate. My wife had a sugar-free "snickers" cake slice, which was amazing! Only down side is a very much more restricted menu than advertised on their website.

A welcome retreat from the cold March winds. A lovely setting and a handsome building with great decor. The cakes are to die for and there are vegan options. Great selection of teas and coffees. I had ginger and lemon my daughter had lemongrass. Highchairs for babies and dog friendly Free internet and very pleasant service .

Nice cakes and a good selection. Service was a bit slow but that's the time factor of the modern coffee machines as a limit to throughout. We sat outside in the autumnal sunshine which was great. Writing this a few rainy weeks later that seems an age ago.

Myself and my wife visited the cafe today late afternoon,the owner was very friendly ,food and drinks all great tasty and well worth the money.we sat outside and enjoyed the views of the lakes and green.I must say as I read the last review that it’s very sad in our current world that people feel that it’s important weather you have a proper cup or takeaway cup I think in the current world this would not be as important. And I would have thought that with all that has happened in the world in the last couple of years and is happening we would be past the small things but maybe that’s our family. Totally peoples choice but thoughts .I like too think people understand that customer based businesses are hard too run with short staff new staff etc etc . And if this isn’t understood then maybe they have never run a customer facing business . Please visit this little gem of a cafe as its too nice . And please keep up all your hard work and thanks for a great visit.

Great food and coffee, friendly staff.

The place offers some fantastic food and cakes. The coffee is very good, and they have s great deal of dairy alternatives. The ladies working there are always nice, and it's a great place to visit when sunny, as the lakeside offers a very relaxing atmosphere.

Lovely place to stop for a cupper a bite to eat and take in the views of Wiltshire and the mendips. There are lovey walks around the lakes bring your wellies in the rain. There is also a Children's play area, my children aged 4 and 8 loved it target age group. Please take the time to visit this wonderful part of the UK.

Lovely little cafe serving a myriad of gluten and dairy free delicacies! All day English breakfast is served as well, which is great for late risers like us. Beautiful setting outside with a lake and playground. When I visited only the small fore-room was used, hoping to see the while place next time I visit.

Has numerous others have mentioned it is a very picturesque and a relaxing place for a picnic and no traffic noise from the bypass. No signage from the bypass as there is no need to advertise as good news travels fast and it’s highly recommended by word of mouth. Good choice of homemade cakes and breakfast is all day , the lasagna was delicious, and the lady was welcoming and friendly. I never knew this lake existed until recently , and would definitely recommend the cafe , plentiful space outside to sit .

Friendly staff, great selection of food, particularly the cakes. Granddaughter enjoyed the play park although she found it difficult getting up to the slides as there were no ladders only saggy rope nets or climbing walls. Enjoyed a walk around the lakes after our tea and cakes

Delivered something for the Lighthouse and stopped for a coffee and a sweet cake. Brilliant lady behind the counter and good food and coffee. That and the great view makes this a place I would visit again.

Gorgeous food and coffee to go today with incredible views to enjoy after our walk. I had the sausage roll and an incredible mint chocolate bar all homemade on the premises with delicious coffee to wash it down while looking out towards Marston House. Beautiful.

Looking for cafes open for takeaway during lockdown 2 I stumbled across Cafe Nouveau. As a cyclist it’s perfect, lovely coffee, great cake selection and lovely friendly staff. Such a beautiful setting looking out to the lakes. We will be back!

Nice relaxed atmosphere on the terrace and in the garden. Okay coffee and cake. Pirate ship for the youngsters and a pleasant walk around the lake where Mrs Swan expects humans and especially dogs to take social distancing seriously.

Hooray! It's open again. Take away drinks and a limited menu of food . Scrumptious cakes. Loos available. Pool in the same complex not open but plenty of lovely scenery and walks. Dog friendly. Limited disabled access.

Situated next to a lake, complete with fishermen. Lovely place for children to run and play, seemed popular with families. The cafe is well set up for the present virus problem, plenty of tables spaced apart. We had sausages rolls, cake tea and coffee all very nice and quite cheap. We will definitely go again.

We only had drinks but were made to feel very welcome by the lady. Wonderful friendly service.

I have visited on various occasions and at different times. Initially for coffee and cake but subsequently for breakfast or lunch. The coffee is excellent and the cakes changing all the time but of very high yummy factor. There is a selection of full or lite bite breakfasts, both full carnivore and "healthy", and they are delicious and well priced. Both menu and specials lunches tick the box. It is a very warm and friendly cafe and now Spring is sprunging the terrace outside will be a suntrap which, combined with the views across the fields and lakes gives a lovely locale. Easy, free parking and less than 10 minutes from town centre.

Cafe Nouveau is a real hidden gem, and a place you’ve just got to visit. I had a fabulous cooked breakfast and the staff were lovely. The cafe is set in wonderful surroundings looking out to a man made lake and a place I asked myself why I hadn’t discovered before. The cafe is dog friendly too, which is a bonus. Will be back on a regular basis for sure.

If you like a nice cup of black decaffeinated coffee do not come to this cafe, it is the worst in the Frome area, try Sainsburys 10x better.

Curiously, a month ago I was searching the internet for "gluten free bakeries/ gluten free- dairy free café" so that i could arrange a relaxed wider family tea-and-cake get together and this NEVER came up on searches, despite being only 11 miles away. Luckily, a friend of a friend provided the tip off and I was not disappointed at my first visit today. For a wet sunday,it had a good number of customers, great atmosphere and choices of table or sofa seating. I had to indulge in 2 cakes (DF, GF and refined sugar free) for the sheer novelty of it and there were at least 4 tasty looking options to suit me. The salads looked very 'superfood', I didn't have a cuppa but the herbal tea or no-sugar hot chocolate stir ins will be on my list for a repeat visit. Will definitely be back. Hopefully on a better day the children can try out the play area.

Was hoping for a bit more but maybe it was an off day, it felt under staffed with a lack of support from managemrnt. Tables not cleaned, took a while to get the food and then not quite what was expected and then some of the order forgotten. Coffee was good.

Very nice upmarket place. The weather was foul when we went but there's lovely outdoor seating for a nicer day. The food was a tiny bit disappointing, not quite as flavoursome as hoped but it was still a cut above other places. They do snacks - soup, pizza etc, burgers, salads and lots of cakes, coffees etc

The food was fantastic, the pigmen were a nuisance, I gave one a chip but they began to swarm and break the windows

Popped in for breakfast, very welcoming, good choice on the menu. Took no time at all to be served. Sat outside to eat, the grounds are very well kept. Enjoyed scrambled egg and salmon. No doubt I'll pop back in when next passing by.

This is a nice little place offering some reasonable food options including vegetarian and vegan. There is a pool next door for which you can become a member and the water is really warm.

Absolute gem, the food is delicious and the host (owner of the cafe) is sweet, always available to have a conversation and really cares about what she does. The atmosphere is majestic and there's a pool just next door.

Fantastic for catering to cyclists. The bikes are very safe out the back, hidden from view and you can keep an eye on them while you enjoy a wonderful breakfast. Very friendly staff. A must do resting place if you are cycling through the area.

It was so nice to visit a place on our wedding anniversary to have such a great selection of homemade food suitable for us (we are vegetarians). An added bonus was that there was no tacky Halloween decorations, something which puts us off going out for our anniversary. Friendly staff as well.Great place to ride a bike to for a visit as you can see you bike from the restaurant. Also lovely outside area nice for warmer days.

Very clean and efficiently run by Susan. Really worth a visit, the adjoining grounds are perfect for children and adults in beautiful countryside.

Called in on the off chance on a Sunday afternoon as I had noticed the cafe whilst taking my granddaughter to the adjacent swimming pool. We really enjoyed our coffee and cake on the gorgeous terrace with a fantastic view over the adjoining lakes. This place is a real find and we’ll definately return soon - the lunch menu looks gorgeous!

Spent time in this lovely cafe while daughter and toddler used the pool. Not visited before as under the impression it was vegan only. Although there are plenty of vegan, vegetarian, dairy free, gluten free etc there are traditional options too. Staff are friendly, surroundings immaculate and lovely food. The free wi fi was much appreciated as we have rubbish signal at home. The children's menu had lots to choose from and offered party hire when the cafe closes at 4.30pm at the weekends. We will be returning to enjoy the lovely sitting out area and a walk around the lake.

I've been here a number of times and the food has always been amazing. For people with allergies/intolerances theres no need to fret when it comes to having a light snack or a decent meal. I must admit to being a great fan of their nut balls. The lamb curry is also very tasty. They have a large selection of lovely loose herbal teas.

We had just finished swimming at the pool opposite this Cafe and was rather hungry so couldn't be bothered to go somewhere else. There was a sign outside saying there may be slight delays due to a party, we figured that could be around 20 minutes wait so carried on and ordered sandwiches. The party came in whilst we were waiting and was given their food at the counter so our table was surrounded in bodies waiting (we sat on the table closest to the counter) and even had to deal with people leaning on our table which seemed very rude. Our 4 year old started complaining as he was bored and hungry so checked the reciept and realised we had been waiting 40 minutes! It was a further 10 minutes before we got our order (even then things were missing), 50 minutes. For 2 sandwiches and 2 wraps? Rediculous! No apology or good will gift, they didn't even acknowledge that it had been almost an hour. The food wasn't even that good. My sons fish finger sandwich was supposed to come with tomato ketchup which was missing, the side salads were drenched in oil and my husbands 'roasted' vegetables was again, covered in oil. Whilst we were finishing up we over heard another family who had been waiting over an hour and a half for half their order (the other half had been delivered earlier) We have been once before which admittedly hadn't been this disasterous but we had had things missing/not right. The cakes they had were beautiful though! We wanted to give it another try because of the convenience but not again. Tea and cake =✔Sit down meal =❌

I was in luck after a dental appointment... meeting up with family I had the comfort of carrot and ginger soup with sourdough bread. ..which was delicious. They all enjoyed delicious salads and other temptations. The views over Somerset, the ancient buildings not to mention the extra special comfort makes this an excellent place for a variety of meetings.Ideal for young families with fun outdoor activity area.

Very slow service on a queuing up to order, queuing up to pay basis. Waited 35 minutes for food to arrive and then had to queue again for cake. Was now behind people paying for a week's food (part of a conference centre). Stressful, probably wouldn't go again. However, good vegan food but spoiled by very poor service.

This little cafe is quite out of the way but once you have discovered it you will return, there is also an added bonus in the way of a short walk across a field and around a small fishing lake.
