Brigantes Bar & Brasserie in York

One of my favourite pubs in York. Excellent choice of beers. Am yet to sample the food but it sounds great.

Pedimos el Sharing Board como entrante, que era enorme y habría sido suficiente por sí solo, sin embargo, pedimos las comidas principales, que también eran de un tamaño razonable y realmente sabrosas. Vino de gran valor - un Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc por poco más de 20 - ¡ganga!

Tasty well cooked scran. We both had the chicken on crushed potatoes. Delicious, and the veg were cooked to perfection. Loved it. Nice staff, not too overbearing, and the South African wine was spot on. Highly recommend.

Five of us enjoyed our Sunday lunch here. Staff friendly and food was delicious. Two of us veggies had the nachos and three enjoyed the Sunday roast. Lovely pub, nice and warm on a chilly day.

Popped in for a couple of drinks and decided to stay for food. Had the vegetable nachos which was delicious! Was seriously one of the tastiest vegetable chillis we’ve had, we want the recipe! Friendly, relaxed atmosphere, would highly recommend!

En esta ocasión decidimos cenar aquí y ¡no nos decepcionó!El ambiente era animado pero no demasiado fuerte como para que no pudieras tener tu propia conversación. Con una buena selección en el menú, el servicio de mesa era eficiente y la comida tenía un sabor encantador y se presentó perfectamente. Mi esposo y yo tomamos 2 bebidas como entrante y principal, todo por menos de 50. . ¡rodaballo!El personal fue muy amable y atento también. Estamos ansiosos por nuestra próxima visita en junio.

Had a lovely Sunday roast here, it was very busy but the staff were still attentive and made sure we enjoyed our visit.

We really enjoyed the food, it was reasonably priced and the staff were very friendly, would definitely go back.

Visiting York for the weekend with my wife, was recommended this pub by a local and it was worth it - we ordered the small portion of nachos (which was more than enough for 2 of us) and also ordered the chicken strips. Good quality food, and the lady who served us was absolutely lovely (did not check her name but she wore glasses and had auburn hair). Will recommend this place

Visited brigantes for lunch and a pint and wasn’t disappointed. Great fish butty with chips. Really nice beer on tap. Well worth a visit

The food was outstanding, so much flavour and well put together. Brilliant menu with great options. Service also excellent and the ambiance of the restaurant and pub was fab! All dishes that we ordered both main and dessert were faultless. Amazing evening - Thankyou

Decent pub/restaurant. Food was excellent. We had nachos, chicken strips with sweet potato fries and chicken burger with chunky home made chips. Nice bottle of chilled Sauv Blanc too. Food is freshly prepared and served piping hot - service excellent too. The rest of the menu looks good too. Recommended.

I genuinely dont think iv been to a more friendlier staffed bar in my life!!! They came straight over and gave my mums dog a biscuit and a bowl of water. Our festive sandwich was lovely, I had roast meat and gravy sandwich.both came with chips and salad, was stuffed afterwards! Good quality ingredients used. Were coming back in june and will be definitely returning

First visit and loved it. Friendly staff who made us feel very welcome. Fabulous food, service and setting.

Nothing outlandishly fancy, but good quality food, well presented. Our party selected a variety of plates from the menu and everyone was very happy with their choice.

My sister and I visited in October. Luckily we booked a table. We shared a platter which although had some non vegetarian food in it was adapted and was totally vegetarian. It was so filling. We were attended to by 2 wonderful members of staff.

This is a great place for food - we enjoyed a scrumptious Sunday roast dinner.... beef and pork with enormous Yorkshire puddings and all the trimmings.... staff were incredibly friendly and helpful and not too intrusive. It gets busy so it is worth booking but having said that you will get a seat after the lunch rush. Dessert was great too. Well worth a visit.

Pre booked the set the Christmas menu and was highly delighted

We popped in for a few beers with friends and decided to eat, great selection of real ales. I chose the Xmas turkey and pigs in blanket pie which came with green beans, samphire, chips n gravy.The pie was very tasty but only a 2" slice and as you can see from the pic, a bit dry.

Called in after finding this spot was dog friendly. Lovely atmosphere and service. The sharing platter of Haggis Bon bons, sausages, homemade Thai fishcakes (delicious) and Brie fondue was excellent. Best meal we have had in York so far.

Wide range of dishes from pub classics to more adventurous fare. Had two dishes from the specials list, a chicken with chorizo and spinach and a chicken and haggis pie. Main pub is dog friendly and they also have a slightly more 'formal' restaurant area. Good food though slightly slow service on a late Sunday afternoon

Found this restaurant by chance and had an excellent evening. My favourite beer, Timothy Taylor's Landlord got us off to a great start. Main course special with cod cooked to perfection and sticky toffee pudding to finish. Very friendly efficient service and good value for money.

Very welcoming on a very rainy evening even though myself, partner & 2 dogs were soaked through, staff very dog friendly & made a big fuss of them, we also had a meal which was excellent, highly recommend this place.

i took my friend for sunday lunch for her birthday, lovely lunch, I had the roast beef she had the pork loin , mine was a little too rare for me but the pork was beautiful, the veg was lovely and fresh , very pleasant afternoon

We were warmly welcome in this place and we showed a nice table in the restaurant. We both choose Canard Confit which was very tasty

There was 3 if us. Two adults and an 8 year old. Food was amazing. We had the pork and seabass specials, my daughter had food from the kids menu. Highly recommend the brownie dessert, it is to die for. Staff were lovely and attentive.

Great value for money and good vegetarian, vegan and gluten free choice. We had a very nice family dinner and we are difficult to please as the first part of this review might indicate, Also good gin selection, worth a visit

One of my must go pubs on any trip I take to York is Brigantes ,a pub that always offers a great selection of real ale's, always served in excellent condition.

A section of this busy popular place was cordoned off for our group. It provided a place to drink from a wide range and also to eat if you wished.

A lively place, friendly service, good food. We had a very pleasant evening. Would come back here again on a return visit to York.

We came to an event in York so I booked meal here in advance. Good job I did cus people were being turned away.

Not bad food, good pint of beer. Had cheese Burger, homemade and tasty wife had Fish and chips, said they were good, thick cut skin on fries (really nice). Only slight gripe is why do places put burgers on a slate, what’s wrong with a plate. Probably just me stuck in my ways.

Even in September as autumn draws in York is heaving. Why not, it has the most wonderful sites to visit and history in loads.

Having not made any dinner reservations we struggled to find somewhere to eat in the very busy centre of York on this Saturday evening. On the way back to the car we saw Brigantes just outside the centre but within the walls at Micklegate. Although we could not sit in the restaurant, there was plenty of room in the main part of the pub and we were happy to order our meals from the bar and eat there. I had Pie of the Day, which was a delicious chicken, leek and mustard seeds pie served with nice cabbage, chips and yummy gravy. I also had most of a bottle of Spanish Red wine. Lol. My son doubled up on a Cheese & Bacon Burger whilst his Mum being a veggie had the Chickpea Burger. We all enjoyed our meals. Clean plates except for her only because she found it very filling. Staff very friendly and prices although not cheap were worth paying as the food and whole experience was a relaxing contrast to the very busy city centre.

Popped in here for quick drink after day wandering York. Friendly welcome, decent pint and red wine at usual York prices. The kind of place where you could settle down on one of the many comfy chairs and sofas for couple of hours.

We had a really good meal before a whisky blending experience (held in a room above the bar by the Whisky Lounge). The wait staff were all friendly and helpful, and attentive without being pushy. The food looked fantastic (we were watching other dishes being served whilst waiting for our own), and tasted even better. Thanks to all there for helping make the evening a great one.

Looking for somewhere for a quick beer and a snack for lunch and we stumbled across Brigantes. Unusual exterior, but inside is smart and well-maintained with friendly, welcoming staff. Good selection of beer, which went down very well, and food was good too. Would definitely return for a longer stay if we were in the area again.

Our favourite pub in York, fantastic beer, great selection to choose from and excellent, very knowledgable and friendly bar staff. Children and dogs welcome and always a good mix of people in the ensure a very friendly atmosphere. The food can be great - burgers and pies are good but sometimes it’s a little slow and greasy.

Had a meal here on evening. Pleasant restaurant, good food and friendly people. Very enjoyable until a large group of cyclists descended on the place and virtually took over. The noise level from them was horrendous and we ended up leaving. But otherwise food was good and reasonably priced.

We called in Brigantes on a York race day, everywhere was very busy. Might not look the most inviting place from the outside but the food was excellent and good value for money.

Me, my Mum & Sister stayed in York Monday night and were looking for somewhere to dine that evening. Due to recent reviews on here for Brigantes we took a leap of faith and booked a table for the 3 of us for 19:30.

This was a great pub with friendly staff eager to help. The barman offered my husband some help with his beer selection. They have a good selection of food on the menu well priced. We stayed five minutes away at the The Lawerence apartments so a good choice for us. The miso salmon was very tasty and well cooked. The burgers for the kids were also great.

had a meal and a drink here on Saturday 10th Aug. Very clean, lots of guest ales to choose from. Lovely atmosphere and food was lovely (chips were superb). would go back without doubt

We had lunch at this restaurant (recommended by our concierge) and had a great experience. The staff was super friendly and helpful. They had a good tap selection and the bartender offered some really good suggestions and tastings. I settled on a strawberry (light) cream ale.

Called in for an evening meal with my wife while we were having a few days in York. Excellent selection of beers and a helpful barman who offered tasters and recommendations. Had to wait a little while for our meals which showed they were properly cooked. We both had the excellent salmon. Very enjoyable.

Pleasant lunch time meal with friends. We wanted to chat and the restaurant is big enough to have quiet places. The food was uncomplicated and good value and the service efficient.

Popped in at last orders on a Sunday - 22.00 oddly and not 22.30 - and they had a very good range of beers on. Nice place all round.

Great meal in brigantes, good choice of ales and friendly service, was pretty busy got our mains quickly and wanted to order desserts but was 40 min wait and had a prior engagement, would definitely come again

Un lugar que me encanta, siempre que voy a York desde hace 4 años una o dos veces lo visito para tomar sus multiples y diferentes cervezas que puedes ir degustando Tambien comer en él está muy bien. Un lugar esyupendo para pasar un rato con amigos incluso solo.

Brigantes es muy acogedor y todo el personal fue amable, con una gran variedad de cervezas y sidras. La mayoría de la comida era buena, pero desafortunadamente fue un poco impredecible. Los nachos jackfruit eran excelentes. Tuve la hamburguesa de jackfruit y aunque todo lo demás en el plato era realmente bueno, la empanada en sí era muy sosa. El tempura vegetal era graso y poco picado. Creo que tal vez las opciones de carne son mejores que las opciones vegetarianas.

Pleasant environment with friendly and efficient staff. Good choice of beers. Only had a small snack but it was very tasty and good value for money.

Had evening meals here last night and were glad we had booked. Both had the fish and chips which were as good as any either of us had ever had. The batter was paper thin and the fish was fresh, thick and juicy. Just perfect with home made tartare sauce. The desserts (sticky toffee pudding) recommended by our outstanding waiter were sensational. Seriously, the bad reviews on here must be a mistake and have been written about somewhere else? The bar has a large selection of real ales and ciders and the restaurant has an excellent wine list which doesn't break the bank. It's worth noting that all the staff are young but don't let this put you off. They are genuinely friendly, knowledgeable and extremely professional. They, and the food, are an absolute credit to this lovely place.

Fabulous fish and chips with an excellent tartare sauce and mushy peas like my mum used to make. The fish was lightly battered, flakey and beautiful. Skin on chips I love and a very tasty tartare sauce to compliment the meal. Best of all though? Mushy peas! I’m not a huge fan of tinned, fish shop or any of the other attempts at Yorkshire caviar, but these were delicious. Give it a try, you won’t be disappointed

My wife and I went to Brigantes because it had reasonable reviews and we were after a Yorkshire Pudding meal at a pub in York. We arrived at 6:30pm on a Sunday only to be told that the Sunday roasts were sold out and there was no Yorkshire Pie left. We thought this a bit odd given it was a long weekend and only early in the evening. We ordered a chicken and bacon pie and the prawn risotto. The pie was tasty, however the risotto was very disappointing, not made well. They offered more Parmesan however it was clear that the stock of the risotto was too bland and way off the mark.

This place just has everything needed good selection of beers and gins, great food with a mix of pub classics and more adventurous specials and staff are spot on with service and beer/drinks knowledge

An excellent pub in a good location. There is always a good range of beers that are well kept, and the food is fantastic. Fish and chips a highlight. Very friendly staff, too.

Brigantes has a good selection of well kept beers, both cask and keg. The food is very nice also - particularity recommend the Sunday lunch. Be warned - the Sunday lunches are very popular so get there early as these start to sell out by the evening!

I visited this restaurant on my last evening of a short break in York. I stayed nearby and wanted somewhere local and quiet and with a reasonable choice of food. The service was efficient and friendly and the food was ok. My husband had a burger in a brioche type bun. He felt it was a little pricey when it arrived with a part of a lettuce leaf and a thin slice of tomatoe that tasted like water. Potato wedge chips and a mayo completed the dish. I fared better with a king prawn risotto. It was pleasant and had a good amount of prawns in it. A pleasant restaurant.

Great little boozer with good selection of cask beers. The food and staff were very scrummy. Modern menu + chalk board.

Busy, friendly bar/restaurant with a nice atmosphere. Loads of drafts to pick from with a helpful board and a great menu. Food was superb, chicken/chorizo pie super tasty and the prawn risotto equally delightful. And dog friendly too with a bowl of water and treats brought over plus fusses. Wish this was our local!

A group of 7 of us from the states met up in York prior to a walking trip, we had a great dinner at Brigantes pub, the food was excellent and to top it off, they had our favorite cask ale, Timothy Taylor Landlord. Pub food in England has come a long way...excellent options even for vegetarians.

Stopped in by chance on the way to the town centre after a walk around the wall. Great choice of craft beers and food, I went for the pie of the day (chicken & leek) it was just what was required and I wish I had the recipe for that gravy it was served with.

We had lunch here after a walk on the City Walls and shopping in York. I have a cheese burger and fries and my wife had roast beef and Yorkshire pudding Sunday lunch. The food was not as great as on our last visit. My burger was a average and my wife’s beef was a bit tough and grisly in parts. The pub was cold too which was a bit uncomfortable as it was a cold day and we went in to get cosy. We still enjoyed our lunch here as the pub has a good atmosphere and the staff are friendly and welcoming.

Visiting York to meet for family lunch we had very good food and the staff were friendly and efficient.

Visiting York and was in Micklegate I asked a newsagent to recommend a place for lunch, he suggested Brigantes. To summarise, the staff were lovely, the lunch was great and the ambience was very relaxed with a mixed clientele (I could not understand why this place was not packed!). I will return.

Think we were unlucky because those around us seemed to have good service. Got our drinks and main course in good time and the food was DELICIOUS. Sadly was impossible to taste the much anticipated pudding even though we ordered them. Such a shame.

Really surprised at how good the food was. Thoroughly enjoyed our evening meal last night, and always great when we can take the dog along with us. Staff were super friendly and helpful, really attentive, and also brought the dog treats and a bowl of water straight away. Will be making this a regular visit.

Went in for pre dinner drinks, great range of beers, very comfortable seats, did not eat but food looked good, would return, great friendly atmosphere.

Stopped here on the off chance and am very glad we did. Great traditional home cooked food (I had steak and ale pie which I rarely eat - it came as a slice and was full from top to bottom with beef which melted in the mouth), chips and vegetables, and gravy boat for you to add as much or as little as you want. £11.50 in March 19. Dessert was sticky toffee pudding which was soft, moist and really tasty. It was a generous portion too, which was a pleasant surprise. The wine was a reasonable price and very nice. The atmosphere was lovely. Staff were really friendly and helpful, and the service was quick. Good facilities - toilets on the same level as the bar and ground floor restaurant. This was a popular restaurant - by the time we left around 7 it was packed. This is indicative of how good it is. There are many places to choose from along there and it is a testament to the food and the ambience that it is such a popular venue. If you are around and fancy a bite to eat, pop in - you won’t be disappointed!

Visited here on a Friday night and there was a great atmosphere and the staff were really attentive and helpful. I had a steak and ale pie... which was fantastic...and then a brownie with cherry compote which was amazing! Would thoroughly recommend!!!

Staff were friendly, great atmosphere - locals and tourists in centre of the town. Lovely choice of food. Every dish we chose was so tasty - nothing left on our plates which is always a good sign! Wish we had had room to try some of the desserts. Will definitely come back next time we are in York and would highly recommend. Tip - book in advance as it gets very busy and people were being turned away while we were there.

We decided to try this restaurant because it had big windows with nice views of the street. My son and I both had the chicken pie, which was very delicious. It was good tasting comfort food. Service was friendly and attentive. I strongly recommend this place.

Popped in again for Sunday roast. Food really good. Our toddler loves the attention the staff give and they were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Makes the Sunday very enjoyable. Good cask and keg range available too.

Called in here for a drink whilst staying in York for the weekend. Great cosy place great beer very friendly bar staff who were happy to chat even recommended other bars to visit. Will definitely be back.

The family and I came here by chance for some food and were pleased that we did. Food was great and the beer was just as good. Plenty of choice on both.

My wife booked a table for late afternoon as part of a Birthday celebration.

Think the tavern in Les Mis where they plot revolution. It’s more full chairs at full tables but the conversations I was party to were varied and interesting. Friendly bar staff and great drinks Mark this out as a place to return. Enjoy!

Great bar loads of choice, v helpful staff, loads of beers/gins. Gin choice was extensive. Not sure if it was cool or a bit old school but dont care. Will return.

Our first visit. Lots of choice behind the bar, nice decor, lots of seating with a separate area for food. The menu looked good so would consider here for food next time.

Booked a table and some of our party were arriving late. This was not a problem to the lrestaurant and took our order when once all arrived.We all enjoyed are main courses which was cooked exceptionally well. Thought the desserts were not as good.

Through the broad high-street style shopfront windows, people can be seen eating, drinking and having a good time. In plain sight! Brigantes has dingy looking older-style pubs around. A peek through their windows reveals they are almost empty. The choice is easy.

Brigantes is a large, open plan pub on Micklegate. I popped in with a friend for a drink one evening and we sat to the rear of the main room on a pair of comfy, leather wingback chairs which was very pleasant.

Llamado para una cena en el camino de regreso a nuestro hotel. La comida era excelente, especialmente el pastel de pavo y tocino. Se apagó la sed con una pinta de cerveza local de Yorkshire recomendada por la encantadora joven que nos servía. Lo recomendaría y volvería a llamar cuando en York.

We stopped for Irish Coffees here as it was so cold that day. Staff very friendly with treats for the hounds. Quick service, clean and friendly.

York has many Pubs and Restaurants but this shines up there amongst the best of them, do try it you will Love it!

A good selection on the menI, we all ordered roasts, very beef and onew veggie. All served with cauliflower cheese, 2 roast potatoes, one large carrot, fine beans, mash and a yorkshire pudding, all nice enough but not very hot more luke warm

My husband and and I were in York for the weekend and we were walking past Brigantes I suggested we call in for our early evening meal. The bar staff/waiting staff were very friendly and efficient. After a couple of drinks we preceeded to order our meals, I ordered the chicken burger with fries and my husband ordered the fish and chips.plus we had starters which were fine. When the main meals arrived my husbands fish looked Very Well done, but the fish inside was soggy and he described it as a mush!!! ( the worst fish he'd ever had) as I was eating my chicken burger on a brioche bun with a slice of tomato and guacamole I was thinking this piece of chicken must be exceptionally small as I hadn't taken a bite of it, it was then that I opened the bun and No Chicken!!!!!! I was surprised to say the least!!! I then informed the 2 staff that there was a chicken burger without the chicken?? They were as surprised as I was?? So my plate was taken away ( the chips were left for me to carry on eating ) a short time later the burger bun was brought back to me now with the chicken on. Plus an apology from the chef !!!( if he deserves that title) apparently he'd left it in the Oven? My husband spoke to the staff when the bill arrived and asked if there could be a reductionon on the the bill due to the fiasco of the chicken burger meal..... they were happy to oblige. What a shame that Brigantes failed to deliver good quality food? We would Not recommend this place for a meal!!!! Which is a shame as it looks so Inviting as you stroll past.....
