Bengal Brasserie in York

Went here yesterday for an anniversary, absolutely fantastic service and amazing food. Our waiter was one of the kindest people we've ever met and the portion sizes were perfect (even for a midnight snack afterwards 😉). Will definitely come back next time we're in York. Highly recommend for an amazing Indian!

5 Plus Experience. Just had a meal for my family party of 4 adults and 2 little girls and can Rate as best ever. My family are here in York for a Long Weekend and made a Visiting and Eating out plan well in advance and recommend pre-booking everything. We arrived for our 18.30 hours pre-booked table and met at the door Imediately by friendly staff and shown to our seating. We ordered quite quickly but where uncertain of amounts to order and but we where advised that some of our order was maybe un-necessary and if required could be ordered during the meal. Also, we were told that taste and curry hotness is made to order using fresh vegetables and ingredients to suit our individual tastes. Never seen this attitude in any Indian Restarsunt before and gave us confidence that these guys really know what they are doing and that we where NOT just another Joe off the street. The meal servings were huge in comparison ( using term portions would do a great disservice) to our Local outfits back in Chester and that the quality was that good that we mostly cleared our plates although a struggle. Although the restaraunt was relatively small, it had a buzzing atmosphere whilst we where there and even being early eveningish, countless people looking for a walk In where turned away so a good sign. Not being a food business connisuer, I would say that this outfit certainly knows how to please by showing quality service and exemperally staff members. Our small kids loved the experience of there first Indian Restaraunt Meal (korma which they know of from home) so they had an idea of what they were about to have so taking children was not a problem. Value for money IMHO was 100% and the supply of after meal ice cream FOC to the kids plus organising taxis (came quickly) was a great gesture. A superb experience overall was had by my family party and is a shame that outfits back home havnt got this quite right to be able to supply with what we had this evening. I can only say that the Chefs, Staff and Management keep up this good work and I say Well Done, and that our family Very Highly Recomend you. If you are planning a trip to York and fancy an Indian Meal, look no further but ensure that you book in advance. It is a must visit. Stan Gardner and Family.

Came into the restaurant without booking on a Wednesday night and they were able to fit us in. Great choices on the menu and when the food arrived it was extremely tasty! Service and staff were excellent. Extremely polite and helpful and efficient. Would definitely come here again!

Good starters, really below average lamb, hard and fatty. Good attentive service, but temperature needs to be turned down. Ok prices. Entirely average, not memorable for anything bad but could not recommend either.

Good food and very attentive service, especially by Saf. We really appreciated the complimentary Bailey's and chocolate at the end of the meal.

From the warm welcome to the delicious food we had a great experience in the restaurant.We were asked to move tables before we had ordered food which was no problem at all but we were given complimentary popadoms & chutneys for doing so . Our lovely waiter was able to give us recommendations & tailor our choices to individual tastes. Prices are really good value & portions perfect . Only downside was the very rowdy stag do but that is not the fault of the staff & we could see how they were trying to deal with them .

Love this restaurant. Always fantastic food and friendly service! Visited several times now, as a couple and also in a large group. Each time, the food and service has been excellent. Im a vegetarian and love curry but can't handle anything too hot. So a special thanks to Saff for his superb advice on what to order. Every meal has been delicious. I highly recommend this restaurant to everyone.

We dined at Bengal Brasserie in York for my husbands birthday. We were served by Saf Jitu. The food was outstanding. I chose a meal off the menu which included a dish of vegetables. I could not stop eating it, I've never had anything like it before and it was so delicious! The service was outstanding, really friendly and knowledgeable about all the dishes. We had a great time and will definitely be visiting again the next time we are in York.

Booked a table for our valentines meal out as we had previously experienced a lovely meal out here. Arrived to be told we couldn’t have our table as we were 5 minutes late, baring in mind we had drove 1 hour to dine here, in terrible weather conditions. Told to leave and come back an hour later. No apology nothing. Poor service and will definitely not return. A waste of travel time, fuel and parking fee.

We had a delicious meal this evening. Best chicken tikka balti I have ever had. So tasty, perfect blend of spices. The staff were amazing. Saf and Jitu were very attentive. We were made to feel very welcome. Highly recommend the Bengal brasserie. Our compliments to the excellent chef and staff.

Have never written a review like this before.Came here after reading the reviews and also a recommendation. We were the first in on a fri night at 6pm. My wife went to the ladies and she came back and said it was dirty so we should have left then. Wait staff were lovely and we had poppadoms and chutney tray. The poppadoms did not seem fresh but was OK. For starters we had a very average prawn puri with lots of water in the prawns and little flavour. The Onion bhaji was the highlight of the meal. My wife wanted to leave however I said let's give the mains a go which was a big mistake. Had a tandoori butter chicken and I asked if it could be a bit spicy and they said they would make it "medium". It was like a chicken in creamy sauce with no spice . I honestly thought it was a children's curry they would give to a 3 year old. She ordered a chicken shashlik. It wasn't even sizzling when it came out and was grey. Am used to it being brown or red with black tinges as if it have been barbecued. She didn't eat a thing. I tried both and was so disappointed. I should have sent them back but she just wanted to leave which we did.

One of the best curry houses I’ve visited. Fair price, good service and amazing food. Was absolutely beautiful. Our lass loved it and she is a fussy bugger. If in York again I’ll 100% be visiting would rate 10/10 if I could

Absolutely disgusting the attitude of the staff was appalling the staff were arguing between each other and one member of staff emptied the till and all hell let loose

Had special biryana lamb very tough sauce good rice good starters again lamb tough chapatis were very rubbery and the service charge is not justified nor optional.

Our waiter, Saf, was excellent. He was so knowledgeable and polite and really made the occasion special. The food was very good and we were offered a complimentary drink at the end. Highly recommended.

Once again out of this world food and service at bengals. Service is 10/10 staff are so kind and helpful when suggesting dishes. Food 10/10 I don’t know how they do it every time but they do. Every time I come here I can’t complain about anything. Highly recommended for couples and families

Shocking that you illegally refuse entry to guide dogs and their owners.

The food is not good. The waiters don’t know the food. The food served is completely different to the description. I ordered a vegetarian dish that was supposed to have aubergine, okra and cauliflower. It came as a potato and sweetcorn dish with none of the vegetables mentioned on the menu. They tried to tell me that a potato was cauliflower. The murgh korma was a bland soup with a few small pieces of dry, hard chicken. It had no discernible coconut in it. The pilau rice was sticky, very yellow and awful. The weirdest thing was that when I pointed this out, they just said different chefs had different takes on things, so I said, •What, like calling a potato a cauliflower and insisting sweetcorn is aubergine? Horrible place. Avoid.

Nicest sheek kebab meat have ever had. Both friend and I thought the mains were top notch as well. Staff were friendly and efficient. Maybe decor could be more asian orientated or muaic in background but was pleasant.

Never been treated so poorly in all my life!! Point blank refused access into the restaurant because we had a guide dog apparently it’s for health and hygiene reasons but it’s completely acceptable to have a bloke doing maintenance with all his tools out, fixing a light causing considerable mess, while other people were eating. I explained that refusing a guide dog and assistance dogs is illegal and is breaking the law {Equality act 2010} luckily we found another Indian restaurant near by who was accommodating and welcoming so didn’t go hungry…. I have reported the restaurant to guide dogs themselves and the council in York already and i will be reporting it to trading standards

This restaurant illegally refuses access to Guide Dog Owners. By law guide dog owners must be granted access to any public restaurants.

Never disappoints. Went in last minute and got squeezed in. Amazing meal, great service. I like a bit of spice so had the Naga chilli chicken. Loved it. Gave me a good sweat on.

Loved it . Other members of the party complained it was too hot . Mentioned fully licensed & air conditioned . We had beer 🍺 but humidity and heat were more higher than comfortable for some of our guests and I’ve had to mark it down for this . Couldn’t fault the food . Not the best I’ve had but certainly not the worst. Probably the Ford Mondeo of curry houses .

We booked a meal here for our wedding anniversary as we were in York for a few days. Wow. The food was incredible. They’ll cook any dish to the heat you like, which is fantastic. The meat is cooked to perfection and I have honestly never had a better naan bread. We were served by Saf and he deserves a special mention. He was fantastic. And that’s not just because he gave us a free dessert and liqueur because it was our anniversary. He was courteous and helpful throughout our meal, making us feel very welcome. I honestly can’t recommend this restaurant enough, if you are in or near York, eat here. In fact if you’re not, it’s enough of a reason alone to visit York.

Lovely little Indian in York! Food was all freshly cooked to order, even made one up to our liking! The service was exceptional from the moment you walked in the door to when you walked out the door, SAF who waited on us was a great character and made our visit for us! Would definitely revisit!

Service great. Food generally good and what you would expect from an old school Bengali restaurant. Meat dish was good. Sabji dish needed more vegetables to live up to its name. The pakoras would benefit from using a gram flour batter rather than wheat flour. The dhall was nice but may have been reheated.

Food was very authentic but the chicken Batashi needs a warning for spice. It was hot. Service was very friendly. Prices were very reasonable. 8.5/10

The worst curry I've ever had and worst place to boot . My curry was bland and tasteless. My wife's byriani was full of oil and bland , my mums curry was dry and no taste what's so ever . My dad had chicken pakories and they coverd in batter . The nan bread was white in colour and under cooked . My mum went to the toilet , she had to wait untill the girl came out , when she finally come out she was staggering all over the show and had weed all over the floor . The place its self is small and it was just full of people drunken . Nightmare place , crap food and rude staff . Avoid at all costs.

Amazing! This was our first visit to Bengal Brasserie, the food is outstanding & the staff provide a professional, friendly & helpful service. For starters my husband had the Tandoori Mixed Kebab & I had the Chicken Chat Puree. For mains my husband had the Special Tandoori Mixed Cocktail it was served with Pilau Rice, Salad and a bhuna sauce & I had the Tandoori Mixed Grill with Garlic Pilau & a Pathia sauce. We also ordered a Garlic Naan. Our food was absolutely outstanding, the meat was so tender & beautifully spiced. Garlic Pilau was amazing, the best I've had. Portion sizes & meat content are really generous. Does get really busy, might be worth booking during weekends & busy periods!

We came in at 9 on Saturday night as the guys told us they were very busy earlier- which I think is a great way to manage business- a lot of places get you there and make you wait. Service was excellent, really good naan and curry dishes very good, found the sides a little disappointing as they were and not that tasty but overall would recommend.

Awful meal, Shaslik bland, mixed starter was horrible, ordered Chicken Bhuna was given lamb bhuna. Garlic Naan was poor. Went here a few years ago was lovely. Would not recommend at all worst Indian ever. Spend your hard earned money elsewhere

I ordered biriyani and it was horrible. Can’t even call it a biriyani. It was just rice and boiled chicken without any spices.The portion of biriyani was so little for the money.

We eat a lot of curry & it’s always a risk when we’re away to try somewhere else. This place was great, food was spicy as described, tasty, naan was good, chips were overdone for my liking but we usually get masala chips which weren’t available, some people like a crunchy fry so that’s to taste. Came in late on a Monday (9:30) & still served us. Would return next time we’re in York. Marked down on atmosphere but it was a Monday night.

Been here every year for about the last 5 years and havent been dissapointed. Tonight waa very diffrent, although the food was nice the service and the bad manners of staff needs to be addressed.

Me and my husband had the best curry we’ve ever had! We are foodies and my husband’s a chef we have been to lots of Indian restaurants and this was by far the best!, it was sooo so nice I was very excited that it was an enjoyable experience, popadomsand pickle tray was lovely the pishwari Nan was hot fresh fluffy and tasted amazing the mushroom rice was very flavourful and really nice, and the garlic chilli chicken balti was beautiful so tasty, and the best bit is you don’t only get 4 or 5 pieces of chicken like at most Indian restaurants was honestly surprised and very happy, the staff Wer great the 2 pints of cobra washed it down nicely , pleasure to dine with you, will definitely be coming back lots, and will be recommending you to everyone! X

Amazing restaurant. We come from Birmingham originally where we have numerous Indian restaurants but the meal at Bengal was the best we've ever had! Fabulous food, staff very friendly and attentive and we would definitely return. Saj provided excellent service, thank you for a memorable evening. Next time we visit York we will definitely head to Bengal Brasserie without hesitation.

Great service and superb food at this friendly and vibrant Indian. Our waiter Ekon was attentive and polite and explained dishes that would suit our tastes. All in all we had great food, wine and all under £75.00 for two. Book in advance 👍

Great food, reasonable price, free popadoms

First time of visiting this restaurant. Menu was great, very varied. When the food arrived it was spot on. Will definitely return! We had poppadoms, a starter, main and sides.

The food was delicious. We tried two different dishes: lamb, rice, and Naan with coriander. It is the best Indian food I have ever had outside of India. Sag was nice.

We were unsure if we should come in or not and were standing outside staring at the menu, but a couple who opened the door to come inside told us that this restaurant was the best in town. We took this recommendation seriously and entered Bengal. We met Jay and Saf. I hope I am not confusing, but it was Jay, who started a warm talk and made us feel like the most important guests. But in a while, we saw that every guest was the most important. What an excellent attitude! Beyond small talk, we saw a lot of attention to detail: if we had to wait, we got some extra snacks and it made the waiting time shorter. The lassi was fresh and delicious. Listening to Jay talking to other guests created a relaxing atmosphere. I think it isn't easy to find a waiter who gives his customers 100% of his attention and at the same time represents his culture and food with such pride and joy. This restaurant is not just a place to relax and to have time for a lively conversation with Jay, this is also the place where you learn a lot about the Indian culture of serving with dedication, better to say, about the art of serving (because it was art indeed!). There is also a lot to learn about the dishes and a lot to puzzle about the menu names. Don’t worry, you will get not only the explanations but also a story about a dish you are interested in. Thank you for many extras, your generosity, and an unforgettable evening.

Went with my partner for a curry, was met with a lovely warm welcome and quickly shown to a table, service was excellent, cutlery and table and restaurant were immaculately clean and tidy, food and portion sizes were amazing, great value for money. Food was absolutely divine, service also very good! My partner made a comment about how lovely one of the sauces was in the pickle tray and asked a member off staff what it was. Upon leaving the same member of staff brought us two pots of it to take home! How very kind. Highly recommend this place, great service, great food and excellent value for money!

Best curry I've had for a while

After reading all the reviews we decided to give it a try on Friday night, first of all the restaurant is so small and they crammed as many tables in as possible.. the atmosphere wasnt nice as me and my partner couldn't even talk due to the noise! The music was loud and horrible and because of that everyone was shouting it was like a cattle market! The chairs were that old and worn when we sat on them our chin was practically resting on the table! Then the food came and i actually didn't end up paying for my korma as it was horrible, the chicken was so dry, my fiance had a lamb madras, he said it was not nice either, they include service charge on the bil, service wasnt exactly good, not one waiter smiled and they all seemed to be in a bad mood.. Will definitely not be going here again!

Exceptional food! The Mixed Kebab was probably the nicest I have had! Saf & Ekon provided 1st class service throughout our visit! If you fancy an Indian meal in York then I highly recommend the Bengal Brasserie!

Came for the wife’s birthday and had a perfect night, Saf, Saj, Ekon and Mabub couldn’t have given better service, the food came out quick and hot and was gorgeous! Would deffo recommend this to anyone visiting York!

We arrived late in the evening after the theatre but were warmly welcomed and looked after by the friendly staff. The food was beautiful, probably some of the best curries we have ever tasted, particularly the Naga chilli chicken and the chicken desi. Highly recommended.

We visited York a couple of years ago and tried to get into this restaurant but it was fully booked. We had a takeaway and it was fantastic. Tonight we dined in the restaurant and the food was amazing. It is the best Indian meal I have had. The service was excellent and the price was unbelievable. Next time we are in York we will definitely be coming back. Can't recommend this place enough!
